An explicit product representation is proved for the correlation function of the multiplicities of closed geodesics on the modular surface. This makes rigorous part of the investigation of Bogomolny, Leyvraz and Schmit on the correlation of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on the modular surface. The result can also be seen as a (rigorously proved) analogue of the Hardy-Littlewood twin prime conjecture.
This paper shows that for a given irreducible representation $ρ$ of $Γ/Γ_1$, the two functions dim($M_k(Γ_1,ρ)$) and dim($S_k(Γ_1,ρ)$) of $k$ are almost linear functions.
Bogomolny-Leyvraz-Schmit (1996) and Peter (2002) proposed an asymptotic formula for the correlation of the multiplicities in length spectrum on the modular surface, and Lukianov (2007) extended its asymptotic formula to the Riemann surfaces derived from the congruence subgroup $\Gam_0(n)$ and the quaternion type co-compact arithmetic groups. The coefficients of the leading terms in these asymptotic formulas are described in terms of Euler products over prime numbers, and they appear in eigenvalue statistic formulas found by Rudnick (2005) and Lukianov (2007) for the Laplace-Beltrami operators …
We study the irreducible constituents of the reduction modulo p of irreducible algebraic representations V of Res_{K/Q_p} GL_2 for K a finite extension of Q_p. We show that asymptotically, the multiplicity of each constituent depends only on the dimension of V and the central character of its reduction modulo p. As an application, we compute the asymptotic value of multiplicities that are the object of the Breuil-Mézard conjecture.
We define a weighted multiplicity function for closed geodesics of given length on a finite area Riemann surface. These weighted multiplicities appear naturally in the Selberg trace formula, and in particular their mean square plays an important role in the study of statistics of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on the surface. In the case of the modular domain, E. Bogomolny, F. Leyvraz and C. Schmit gave a formula for the mean square, which was rigorously proved by M. Peter. In this paper we calculate the mean square of weighted multiplicities for some surfaces associated to congruence subgro…
Given a family $\mathcal{F}=\{A_1,\dots,A_s\}$ of subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_n$, define $Δ\mathcal{F}$ to be the multiset of all (cyclic) distances dist$(x,y)$, where $\{x,y\} \subset A_i$, $x \neq y$, for some $i=1,\dots,s$. Taking inspiration from a Euclidean distance problem of Erdős, we say that $\mathcal{F}$ is Erdős-deep if the multiplicities of distances that occur in $Δ\mathcal{F}$ are precisely $1,2,\dots,k-1$ for some integer $k$. In the case $s=1$, it is known that a modular arithmetic progression in $\mathbb{Z}_n$ achieves this property (under mild conditions); conversely, APs are the …
Under the generalized Lindelöf hypothesis, the exponent in the error term of the prime geodesic theorem for the modular surface is reduced to $\frac{5}{8}+\varepsilon $ outside a set of finite logarithmic measure.

We prove a geometric formula for the cycle integrals of Parson's weight 2k modular integrals in terms of the intersection angles of geodesics on modular curves. Our result is an analog for modular integrals of a classical formula for the cycle integrals of certain hyperbolic Poincaré series, due to Katok. On the other hand, it extends a recent geometric formula of Matsusaka and Duke, Imamoglu, and Tóth for the cycle integrals of weight 2 modular integrals.
In this article we consider mod p modular Galois representations which are unramified at p such that the Frobenius element at p acts through a scalar matrix. The principal result states that the multiplicity of any such representation is bigger than 1.
Soundararajan and Young (2013) proposed a new approach to improve the error term of the prime geodesic theorem for the modular group and actually obtained the exponent 25/36 of the error term. In the present paper, we sharpen it to 9/13.
In this paper we study the values of modular functions at the Markov quadratics which are defined in terms of their cycle integrals along the associated closed geodesics. These numbers are shown to satisfy two properties that were conjectured by Kaneko. More precisely we show that the values of a modular function f, along any branch B of the Markov tree, converge to the value of f at the Markov number which is the predecessor of the tip of B. We also prove an interlacing property for these values.
We determine the variance for the fluctuations of the arithmetic measures obtained by collecting all closed geodesics on the modular surface with the same discriminant and ordering them by the latter. This arithmetic variance differs by subtle factors from the variance that one gets when considering individual closed geodesics when ordered by their length. The arithmetic variance is the same one that appears in the fluctuations of measures associated with quantum states on the modular surface.
We asymptotically estimate the variance for the distribution of closed geodesics in small random balls or annuli on the modular surface $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$. A probabilistic model in which closed geodesics are modeled using random geodesic segments is proposed, and we rigorously analyze this model using mixing of the geodesic flow in $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$. This leads to a conjecture for the asymptotic behavior of the variance, which unlike in previously explored cases is not equal to the expected value. We prove this conjecture for small balls and annuli, resolving a question left open by…
The existence of the limiting pair correlation for angles between reciprocal geodesics on the modular surface is established. An explicit formula is provided, which captures geometric information about the length of reciprocal geodesics, as well as arithmetic information about the associated reciprocal classes of binary quadratic forms. One striking feature is the absence of a gap beyond zero in the limiting distribution, contrasting with the analog Euclidean situation.
We give an ergodic theoretic proof of a theorem of Duke about equidistribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface. The proof is closely related to the work of Yu. Linnik and B. Skubenko, who in particular proved this equidistribution under an additional congruence assumption on the discriminant. We give a more conceptual treatment using entropy theory, and show how to use positivity of the discriminant as a substitute for Linnik's congruence condition.
Let $f$ be a Petersson normalized Hecke-Maass cusp form with spectral parameter $t\geq 2$ and let $\mathcal{C}_{D}$ be the union of closed geodesics in $\text{Sl}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})\setminus \mathbb{H}$ associated to a fundamental discriminant $D>0$. Following a suggestion by Sarnak in his letter to Reznikov, we express the restriction norm $||f|_{\mathcal{C}_{D}}||_{2}^{2}$ as a weighted sum of central values of L-functions using Waldspurger's formula. This allows us to get an unconditional improvement over the current bounds.
Periodic geodesics on the modular surface correspond to periodic orbits of the geodesic flow in its unit tangent bundle $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z})\backslash\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$. The complement of any finite number of orbits is a hyperbolic $3$-manifold, which thus has a well-defined volume. We present strong numerical evidence that, in the case of the set of geodesics corresponding to the ideal class group of a real quadratic field, the volume has linear asymptotics in terms of the total length of the geodesics. This is not the case for general sets of geodesics
We show that generating functions associated to the sequence of convergents of a quadratic irrational are related in a natural way to the dynam- ical zeta function of a hyperbolic automorphism of the 2-torus. As a corollary, this shows that the Lévy constant of a quadratic irrational appears naturally as the topological entropy of such maps.
In a recent work of Duke, Imamoglu, and Tóth, the linking number of certain links on the space $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})\backslash\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ is investigated. This linking number has an alternative interpretation as the intersection number of closed geodesics on the modular curve, which is the focus of this paper. By relating the intersection number to a combinatorial computation involving rivers of Conway topographs, an efficient algorithm for computing intersection numbers is produced. A formula for the total intersection of a pair of positive coprime fundamental discriminants is…
The connection between geodesics on the modular surface $\operatorname{PSL}(2,{\mathbb Z})\backslash {\mathbb H}$ and regular continued fractions, established by Series, is extended to a connection between geodesics on $Γ\backslash {\mathbb H}$ and odd and grotesque continued fractions, where $Γ\cong {\Bbb Z}_3 \ast {\Bbb Z}_3$ is the index two subgroup of $\operatorname{PSL}(2,{\mathbb Z})$ generated by the order three elements $\left( \begin{smallmatrix} 0 & -1 \\ 1 & 1 \end{smallmatrix} \right)$ and $\left( \begin{smallmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ -1 & 1 \end{smallmatrix} \right)$, having an ideal quad…
Zagier's well-known work on traces of singular moduli relates the coefficients of certain weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight $1/2$ to traces of values of the modular $j$-function at imaginary quadratic points. A real quadratic analogue was recently studied by Duke, Imamoglu, and Tóth. They showed that the coefficients of certain weight $1/2$ mock modular forms \[ f_D = \sum_{d>0} a(d,D) q^d, \qquad D>0 \] are given in terms of traces of cycle integrals of the $j$-function. Their result applies to those coefficients $a(d,D)$ for which $dD$ is not a square. Recently Bruinier, Funke, and …
We give asymptotic upper and lower bounds for the real and imaginary parts of cycle integrals of the classical modular j-function along geodesics that correspond to Markov irrationalities.
This paper describes the cutting sequences of geodesic flow on the modular surface H/PSL(2,Z) with respect to the standard fundamental domain F = {z=x+iy: -1/2 <= x <= 1/2 and |z|>=1} of PSL(2,Z). The cutting sequence for a vertical geodesic {θ+it: t > 0} is related to a one-dimensional continued fraction expansion for θ, called the one-dimensional Minkowski geodesic continued fraction (MGCF) expansion, which is associated to a parametrized family of reduced bases of a family of 2-dimensional lattices. The set of cutting sequences for all geodesics forms a two-sided shift in a symbol space {L,…
A closed geodesic on the modular surface gives rise to a knot on the 3-sphere with a trefoil knot removed, and one can compute the linking number of such a knot with the trefoil knot. We show that, when ordered by their length, the set of closed geodesics having a prescribed linking number become equidistributed on average with respect to the Liouville measure. We show this by using the thermodynamic formalism to prove an equidistribution result for a corresponding set of quadratic irrationals on the unit interval.
We study the behavior of zeros and mass of holomorphic Hecke cusp forms on $SL_2(\mathbb Z) \backslash \mathbb H$ at small scales. In particular, we examine the distribution of the zeros within hyperbolic balls whose radii shrink sufficiently slowly as $k \rightarrow \infty$. We show that the zeros equidistribute within such balls as $k \rightarrow \infty$ as long as the radii shrink at a rate at most a small power of $1/\log k$. This relies on a new, effective, proof of Rudnick's theorem on equidistribution of the zeros and on an effective version of Quantum Unique Ergodicity for holomorphic …
We study the distribution of closed geodesics for the modular surface. We improve the error term in the prime geodesic theorem, and obtain results on prime geodesics in very short intervals conditionally on the generalized Riemann Hypothesis for Dirichlet L-functions. We emphasize a connection between the closed geodesics and certain Dirichlet L-functions.
We study generating functions for Lusztig's $t$-analog of weight multiplicities associated to integrable highest weight representations of the simplest affine Lie algebra $A_1^{(1)}$. At $t=1$, these reduce to the {\em string functions} of $A_1^{(1)}$, which were shown by Kac and Peterson to be related to certain Hecke indefinite modular forms. Using their methods, we obtain a description of the general $t$-string function; we show that its values can be realized as radial averages of a certain extension of the Hecke indefinite modular form.
We study rationality properties of geodesic cycle integrals of meromorphic modular forms associated to positive definite binary quadratic forms. In particular, we obtain finite rational formulas for the cycle integrals of suitable linear combinations of these meromorphic modular forms.
We show that geodesics in the upper half-plane attached to a maximal split torus or a real quadratic torus in $GL_{2, \mathbf{Q}}$ are the only irreducible algebraic curves whose image via the $j$-invariant is contained in an algebraic curve.
In 2008, M. Kaneko made several interesting observations about the values of the modular j invariant at real quadratic irrationalities. The values of modular functions at real quadratics are defined in terms of their cycle integrals along the associated geodesics. In this paper we prove some of the conjectures of M. Kaneko for a general modular function.
This is the third of a series of papers relating intersections of special cycles on the integral model of a Shimura surface to Fourier coefficients of Hilbert modular forms. More precisely, we embed the Shimura curve over Q associated to a rational quaternion algebra into the Shimura surface associated to the base change of the quaternion algebra to a real quadratic field. After extending the associated moduli problems over Z we obtain an arithmetic threefold with a embedded arithmetic surface, which we view as a cycle of codimension one. We then construct a family, indexed by totally positive…
For the group PSL(2,Z) it is known that there is an isomorphism between polynomial eigenfunctions of the transfer operator for the geodesic flow and the Eichler cohomology in the theory of modular forms. In a recent paper by Chang and Mayer it is indicated that such an isomorphism exists as well for certain subgroups of PSL(2,Z). We prove this and provide some evidence by computer aided algebraic calculations that such an isomorphism exists for all principal congruence subgroups and all congruence subgroups of Hecke type.
We prove the existence of infinitely many low-lying and fundamental closed geodesics on the modular surface which are reciprocal, that is, invariant under time reversal. The method combines ideas from Parts I and II of this series, namely the dispersion method in bilinear forms, as applied to thin semigroups coming from restricted continued fractions.
In this paper, we use regularized theta liftings to construct weak Maass forms weight 1/2 as lifts of weak Maass forms of weight 0. As a special case we give a new proof of some of recent results of Duke, Toth and Imamoglu on cycle integrals of the modular j-invariant and extend these to any congruence subgroup. Moreover, our methods allow us to settle the open question of a geometric interpretation for periods of j along infinite geodesics in the upper half plane. In particular, we give the `central value' of the (non-existing) `L-function' for j. The key to the proofs is the construction of …
The variance of observables of quantum states of the Laplacian on the modular surface is calculated in the semiclassical limit. It is shown that this hermitian form is diagonalized by the irreducible representations of the modular quotient and on each of these it is equal to the classical variance of the geodesic flow after the insertion of a subtle arithmetical special value of the corresponding $L$-function.
Monstrous moonshine relates distinguished modular functions to the representation theory of the monster. The celebrated observations that 196884=1+196883 and 21493760=1+196883+21296876, etc., illustrate the case of the modular function j-744, whose coefficients turn out to be sums of the dimensions of the 194 irreducible representations of the monster. Such formulas are dictated by the structure of the graded monstrous moonshine modules. Recent works in moonshine suggest deep relations between number theory and physics. Number theoretic Kloosterman sums have reappeared in quantum gravity, and …
Sarnak obtained the asymptotic formula of the sum of the class numbers of indefinite binary quadratic forms from the prime geodesic theorem for the modular group. In the present paper, we show several asymptotic formulas of partial sums of the class numbers by using the prime geodesic theorems for the congruence subgroups of the modular group.
In this paper we study a continuity of the "values" of modular functions at the real quadratic numbers which are defined in terms of their cycle integrals along the associated closed geodesics. Our main theorem reveals a more finer structure of the continuity of these values with respect to continued fraction expansions and it turns out that it is different from the continuity with respect to Euclidean topology.
For the study of the Mordell-Weil group of an elliptic curve ${\bf E}$ over a complex function field of a projective curve $B$, the first author introduced the use of differential-geometric methods arising from Kähler metrics on $\mathcal H \times \mathbb C$ invariant under the action of the semi-direct product ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb R) \ltimes \mathbb R^2$. To a properly chosen geometric model $π: \mathcal E \to B$ of ${\bf E}$ as an elliptic surface and a non-torsion holomorphic section $σ: B \to \mathcal E$ there is an associated ``verticality'' $η_σ$ of $σ$ related to the locally defined Bett…
