Almkvist proved that for a commutative ring A the characteristic polynomial of an endomorphism α:P \to P of a finitely generated projective A-module determines (P,α) up to extensions. For a non-commutative ring A the generalized characteristic polynomial of an endomophism α: P \to P of a finitely generated projective A-module is defined to be the Whitehead torsion [1-xα] \in K_1(A[[x]]), which is an equivalence class of formal power series with constant coefficient 1.
In this paper an example is given of a non-commutative ring A and an endomorphism α:P \to P for which the generalized characteristic polynomial does not determine (P,α) up to extensions. The phenomenon is traced back to the non-injectivity of the natural map Σ^{-1}A[x] \to A[[x]], where Σ^{-1}A[x] is the Cohn localization of A[x] inverting the set Σof matrices in A[x] sent to an invertible matrix by A[x] \to A; x \mapsto 0.
In this paper we establish a Gröbner-Shirshov bases theory for Lie algebras over commutative rings. As applications we give some new examples of special Lie algebras (those embeddable in associative algebras over the same ring) and non-special Lie algebras (following a suggestion of P.M. Cohn (1963) \cite{Conh}). In particular, Cohn's Lie algebras over the characteristic $p$ are non-special when $p=2,\ 3,\ 5$. We present an algorithm that one can check for any $p$, whether Cohn's Lie algebras is non-special. Also we prove that any finitely or countably generated Lie algebra is embeddable in a …
By representing elements in free fields (over a commutative field and a finite alphabet) using Cohn and Reutenauer's linear representations, we provide an algorithmic construction for the (partial) non-commutative (or Hausdorff-) derivative and show how it can be applied to the non-commutative version of the Newton iteration to find roots of matrix-valued rational equations.
This paper will briefly survey some recent methods of localization in group rings, which work in more general contexts than the classical Ore localization. In particular the Cohn localization using matrices will be described, but other methods will also be considered.
Given a noncommutative (Cohn) localization $A \to σ^{-1}A$ which is injective and stably flat we obtain a lifting theorem for induced f.g. projective $σ^{-1}A$-module chain complexes and localization exact sequences in algebraic $L$-theory, matching the algebraic $K$-theory localization exact sequence of Neeman and Ranicki.
We describe a solution of the word problem in free fields (coming from non-commutative polynomials over a commutative field) using elementary linear algebra, provided that the elements are given by minimal linear representations. It relies on the normal form of Cohn and Reutenauer and can be used more generally to (positively) test rational identities. Moreover we provide a construction of minimal linear representations for the inverse of non-zero elements.
A survey of the applications of the noncommutative Cohn localization of rings to the topology of manifolds with infinite fundamental group, with particular emphasis on the algebraic K- and L-theory of generalized free products.
The aim of these notes is to collect and motivate the basic localization toolbox for the geometric study of ``spaces'', locally described by noncommutative rings and their categories of one-sided modules. We present the basics of Ore localization of rings and modules in much detail. Common practical techniques are studied as well. We also describe a counterexample for a folklore test principle. Localization in negatively filtered rings arising in deformation theory is presented. A new notion of the differential Ore condition is introduced in the study of localization of differential calculi. T…
In this paper we generalize classical results regarding minimal realizations of non-commutative (nc) rational functions using nc Fornasini-Marchesini realizations which are centred at an arbitrary matrix point. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a minimal realization for every nc rational function, centred at an arbitrary matrix point in its domain of regularity. Moreover, we show that using this realization we can evaluate the function on all of its domain (of matrices of all sizes) and also with respect to any stably finite algebra. As a corollary we obtain a new proof of the theorem b…
This paper continues a research program on constructive investigations of non-commutative Ore localizations, initiated in our previous papers, and particularly touches the constructiveness of arithmetics within such localizations. Earlier we have introduced monoidal, geometric and rational types of localizations of domains as objects of our studies. Here we extend this classification to rings with zero divisors and consider Ore sets of the mentioned types which are commutative enough: such a set either belongs to a commutative algebra or it is central or its elements commute pairwise. By using…
We study different types of localisations of a commutative noetherian ring. More precisely, we provide criteria to decide: (a) if a given flat ring epimorphism is a universal localisation in the sense of Cohn and Schofield; and (b) when such universal localisations are classical rings of fractions. In order to find such criteria, we use the theory of support and we analyse the specialisation closed subset associated to a flat ring epimorphism. In case the underlying ring is locally factorial or of Krull dimension one, we show that all flat ring epimorphisms are universal localisations. Moreove…
A commutative Rota-Baxter algebra can be regarded as a commutative algebra that carries an abstraction of the integral operator. With the motivation of generalizing the study of algebraic geometry to Rota-Baxter algebra, we extend the central concept of localization for commutative algebras to commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. The existence of such a localization is proved and, under mild conditions, its explicit constructions are obtained. The existence of tensor products of commutative Rota-Baxter algebras is also proved and the compatibility of localization and tensor product of Rota-Baxter…
Long before we learn to construct the field of rational numbers (out of the ring of integers) at university, we learn how to calculate with fractions at school. When it comes to "numbers", we are used to a commutative multiplication, for example 2*3=6=3*2. On the other hand --even before we can write-- we learn to talk (in a language) using words, consisting of purely non-commuting "letters" (or symbols), for example "xy" is not equal to "yx" (with the concatenation as multiplication). Now, if we combine numbers (from a field) with words (from the free monoid of an alphabet) we get non-commuta…
The noncommutative (Cohn) localization S^{-1}R of a ring R is defined for any collection S of morphisms of f.g. projective left R-modules. We exhibit S^{-1}R as the endomorphism ring of R in an appropriate triangulated category. We use this expression to prove that if S^{-1}R is "stably flat over R" (meaning that Tor^R_i(S^{-1}R,S^{-1}R)=0 for i>0) then every bounded f.g. projective S^{-1}R-module chain complex D with [D] \in im(K_0(R)-->K_0(S^{-1}R)) is chain equivalent to S^{-1}C for a bounded f.g. projective R-module chain complex C, and that there is a localization exact sequence in higher…
Recently, tilting and cotilting classes over commutative noetherian rings have been classified in arXiv:1203.0907. We proceed and, for each n-cotilting class C, construct an n-cotilting module inducing C by an iteration of injective precovers. A further refinement of the construction yields the unique minimal n-cotilting module inducing C. Finally, we consider localization: a cotilting module is called ample, if all of its localizations are cotilting. We prove that for each 1-cotilting class, there exists an ample cotilting module inducing it, but give an example of a 2-cotilting class which f…
In this paper we prove that if $R$ is a commutative refinement ring and $M$, $N$ are two $R$-modules then, $M\cong N$ if and only if for every maximal ideal $m$ of $R$, $M_m\cong N_m$. We prove if $R$ is a refinement ring, then every regular matrix over $\frac{R}{J(R)}$ admits a diagonal reduction iff every regular matrix over $R$ admits a diagonal reduction.
In the current article we study structure of a Chevalley group $G(R)$ over a commutative ring $R$. We generalize and improve the following results: (1) standard, relative, and multi-relative commutator formulas; (2) nilpotent structure of [relative] $K_1$; (3) bounded word length of commutators. To this end we enlarge the elementary group, construct a generic element for the extended elementary group, and use localization in the universal ring. The key step is a construction of a generic element for a principle congruence subgroup, corresponding to a principle ideal.
We study the interaction between various analytification functors, and a class of morphisms of rings, called homotopy epimorphisms. An analytification functor assigns to a simplicial commutative algebra over a ring $R$, along with a choice of Banach structure on $R$, a commutative monoid in the monoidal model category of simplicial ind-Banach $R$-modules. We show that several analytifications relevant to analytic geometry - such as Tate, overconvergent, Stein analytification, and formal completion - are homotopy epimorphisms. Another class of examples arises from Weierstrass, Laurent and ratio…
In this note, we show that any epimorphism originating at a von Neumann regular ring (not necessary commutative) is a universal localization. As an application, we prove that the Telescope Conjecture holds for the unbounded derived categories of von Neumann regular rings (not necessary commutative).
We explore elementary matrix reduction over certain rings characterized by their localizations. Let $R$ be a locally stable ring, we prove that $R$ is an elementary divisor ring if and only if $R$ is a Bezout ring. Elementary matrix reduction over some related localizations are also studied. Many known results on domains are thereby extended to general commutative rings which may contain many zero divisors.
We classify 1-tilting classes over an arbitrary commutative ring. As a consequence, we classify all resolving subcategories of finitely presented modules of projective dimension at most 1. Both these collections are in 1-1 correspondence with faithful Gabriel topologies of finite type, or equivalently, with Thomason subsets of the spectrum avoiding a set of primes associated in a specific way to the ring. We also provide a generalization of the classical Fuchs and Salce tilting modules, and classify the equivalence classes of all 1-tilting modules. Finally we characterize the cases when tiltin…
In this paper we show that each non-zero ideal of a twisted generalized Weyl algebra (TGWA) $A$ intersects the centralizer of the distinguished subalgebra $R$ in $A$ non-trivially. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the centralizer of $R$ in $A$ to be commutative, and give examples of TGWAs associated to symmetric Cartan matrices satisfying this condition. By imposing a certain finiteness condition on $R$ (weaker than Noetherianity) we are able to make an Ore localization which turns out to be useful when investigating simplicity of the TGWA. Under this mild assumption we…
We introduce in this work, the class of commutative rings whose lattice of ideals forms an MTL-algebra which is not necessary a BL-algebra. The so-called class of rings will be named MTL-rings. We prove that a local commutative ring with identity is an MTL-ring if and only if it is an arithmetical ring. It is shown that a noetherian commutative ring R with an identity is an MTL-ring if and only if ideals of the localization RM at a maximal ideal M are totally ordered by the set inclusion. Remarking that noetherian MTL-rings are again BL-rings, we work outside of the noetherian case by consider…
The notion of a glider representation of a chain of normal subgroups of a group is defined by a new structure, i.e. a fragment for a suitable filtration on the group ring. This is a special case of general glider representations defined for a positively filtered ring $R$ with filtration $FR$ and subring $S = F_0R$. Nice examples appear for chains of groups, chains of Lie algebras, rings of differential operators on some variety or $V$-gliders for $W$ for algebraic varieties $V$ and $W$. This paper aims to develop a scheme theory for glider representations via the localizations of filtered modu…
The classical Gelfand-Kirillov dimension for algebras over fields has been extended recently by J. Bell and J.J Zhang to algebras over commutative domains. However, the behavior of this new notion has not been enough investigated for the principal algebraic constructions as polynomial rings, matrix rings, localizations, filtered-graded rings, skew $PBW$ extensions, etc. In this paper, we present complete proofs of the computation of this more general dimension for the mentioned algebraic constructions for algebras over commutative domains. The Gelfand-Kirillov dimension for modules and the Gel…
This paper continues the study of the reduced ring order (rr-order) in reduced rings where $a< b$ if $a^2= ab$. A reduced ring is called rr-good if it is a lower semi-lattice in the order. Examples include weakly Baer rings (wB or PP-rings) but many more. Localizations are examined relating to this order as well as the Pierce sheaf. Liftings of rr-orthogonal sets over surjections of reduced rings are studied. A known result about commutative powers series rings over wB rings is extended, via methods developed here, to very general, not necessarily commutative, power series rings defined by an …
A group homomorphism eta:A-> H is called a localization of A if every homomorphism phi:A-> H can be `extended uniquely' to a homomorphism Phi:H-> H in the sense that Phi eta = phi. This categorical concepts, obviously not depending on the notion of groups, extends classical localizations as known for rings and modules. Moreover this setting has interesting applications in homotopy theory. For localizations eta:A-> H of (almost) commutative structures A often H resembles properties of A, e.g. size or satisfying certain systems of equalities and non-equalities. Perhaps the best known example is …
For a non-commutative domain $R$ and a multiplicatively closed set $S$ the (left) Ore localization of $R$ at $S$ exists if and only if $S$ satisfies the (left) Ore property. Since the concept has been introduced by Ore back in the 1930's, Ore localizations have been widely used in theory and in applications. We investigate the arithmetics of the localized ring $S^{-1}R$ from both theoretical and practical points of view. We show that the key component of the arithmetics is the computation of the intersection of a left ideal with a submonoid $S$ of $R$. It is not known yet, whether there exists…
A definition of quasi-flat left module is proposed and it is shown that any left module which is either quasi-projective or flat is quasi-flat. A characterization of local commutative rings for which each ideal is quasi-flat (resp. quasi-projective) is given. It is also proven that each commutative ring R whose finitely generated ideals are quasi-flat is of $λ$-dimension $\le$ 3, and this dimension $\le$ 2 if R is local. This extends a former result about the class of arithmetical rings. Moreover, if R has a unique minimal prime ideal then its finitely generated ideals are quasi-projective if …
A ring $R$ is said to be clean if each element of $R$ can be written as the sum of a unit and an idempotent. $R$ is said to be weakly clean if each element of $R$ is either a sum or a difference of a unit and an idempotent, and $R$ is said to be feebly clean if every element $r$ can be written as $r=u+e_1-e_2$, where $u$ is a unit and $e_1,e_2$ are orthogonal idempotents. Clearly clean rings are weakly clean rings and both of them are feebly clean. In a recent article (J. Algebra Appl. 17 (2018), 1850111(5 pages)), McGoven characterized when the group ring $\mathbb Z_{(p)}[C_q]$ is weakly clea…
In this paper we present two algorithms for the computation of a diagonal form of a matrix over non-commutative Euclidean domain over a field with the help of Gröbner bases. This can be viewed as the pre-processing for the computation of Jacobson normal form and also used for the computation of Smith normal form in the commutative case. We propose a general framework for handling, among other, operator algebras with rational coefficients. We employ special "polynomial" strategy in Ore localizations of non-commutative $G$-algebras and show its merits. In particular, for a given matrix $M$ we pr…
