We explore elementary matrix reduction over certain rings characterized by their localizations. Let $R$ be a locally stable ring, we prove that $R$ is an elementary divisor ring if and only if $R$ is a Bezout ring. Elementary matrix reduction over some related localizations are also studied. Many known results on domains are thereby extended to general commutative rings which may contain many zero divisors.
What are all rings $R$ for which $R^*$ (the group of invertible elements of $R$ under multiplication) is an elementary abelian $p$-group? We answer this question for finite-dimensional commutative $k$-algebras, finite commutative rings, modular group algebras, and path algebras. Two interesting byproducts of this work are a characterization of Mersenne primes and a connection to Dedekind's problem.
A cover of an associative (not necessarily commutative nor unital) ring $R$ is a collection of proper subrings of $R$ whose set-theoretic union equals $R$. If such a cover exists, then the covering number $σ(R)$ of $R$ is the cardinality of a minimal cover, and a ring $R$ is called $σ$-elementary if $σ(R) < σ(R/I)$ for every nonzero two-sided ideal $I$ of $R$. In this paper, we provide the first examples of $σ$-elementary rings $R$ that have nontrivial Jacobson radical $J$ with $R/J$ noncommutative, and we determine the covering numbers of these rings.
Let $R$ be an exchange ring. We prove that the relative elementary subgroups $E_n(R,I)$ are normal in the general linear group $GL_n(R)$ if $n\geq 1$ and that the standard commutator formula $E_n(R,I)=[E_n(R),E_n(R,I)]=[E_n(R),C_n(R,I)]$ holds if $n\geq 3$. Moreover, we classify the subgroups of $GL_n(R)$ that are normalised by the elementary subgroup $E_n(R)$ in the case $n\geq 3$.

If $R$ is a ring with unity, then we define the unital covering number $σ_u(R)$ to be the size of a minimal cover of $R$ by subrings that contain $1_R$ (if such a cover exists), and $R$ is $σ_u$-elementary if $σ_u(R) < σ_u(R/I)$ for ever…
We constuct the theory of diagonalizability for matrices over Bezout rings of stable range 1 with the Kazimirsky condition. It is shown that a ring of stable range 1 with the right (left) Kazimirsky condition is an elementary divisor ring if and only if it is a duo ring.
Let $R$ be an associative ring with 1, $G=GL(n, R)$ be the general linear group of degree $n\ge 3$ over $R$. In this paper we calculate the relative centralisers of the relative elementary subgroups or the principal congruence subgroups, corresponding to an ideal $A\unlhd R$ modulo the relative elementary subgroups or the principal congruence subgroups, corresponding to another ideal $B\unlhd R$. Modulo congruence subgroups the results are essentially easy exercises in linear algebra. But modulo the elementary subgroups they turned out to be quite tricky, and we could get definitive answers on…
Let $R$ be any associative ring with $1$, $n\ge 3$, and let $A,B$ be two-sided ideals of $R$. In the present paper we show that the mixed commutator subgroup $[E(n,R,A),E(n,R,B)]$ is generated as a group by the elements of the two following forms: 1) $z_{ij}(ab,c)$ and $z_{ij}(ba,c)$, 2) $[t_{ij}(a),t_{ji}(b)]$, where $1\le i\neq j\le n$, $a\in A$, $b\in B$, $c\in R$. Moreover, for the second type of generators, it suffices to fix one pair of indices $(i,j)$. This result is both stronger and more general than the previous results by Roozbeh Hazrat and the authors. In particular, it implies tha…
A square matrix is $k$-Toeplitz if its diagonals are periodic sequences of period $k$. We find universal formulas for the determinant, the characteristic polynomial, some eigenvectors, and the entries of the inverse of any tridiagonal $k$-Toeplitz matrix (in particular, of any tridiagonal matrix) over any commutative unital ring, expressed in terms of the elementary operations of the ring. The results are proven using combinatorial identities and elementary linear algebra. We conduct a complexity analysis of algorithms based on our formulas, showing that they are efficient, and we compare our …
