Problems of (i) precise (exact) bound for families of hyperelliptic curves over prime finite fields and (ii) equidistribution of angles of Kloosterman sums are discussed.
We prove distribution estimates for primes in arithmetic progressions to large smooth squarefree moduli, with respect to congruence classes obeying Chinese Remainder Theorem conditions, obtaining an exponent of distribution $\frac{1}{2} + \frac{7}{300}$.
We study the distribution, in the space of Satake parameters, of local components of Siegel cusp forms of genus 2 and growing weight, subject to a specific weighting which allows us to apply results concerning Bessel models and a variant of Petersson's formula. We obtain for this family a quantitative local equidistribution result, and derive a number of consequences. In particular, we show that the computation of the density of low-lying zeros of the spinor L-functions (for restricted test functions) gives global evidence for a well-known conjecture of Böcherer concerning the arithmetic natur…
In this book, we study equidistribution and counting problems concerning locally geodesic arcs in negatively curved spaces endowed with potentials, and we deduce, from the special case of tree quotients, various arithmetic applications to equidistribution and counting problems in non-Archimedean local fields.
We consider families of exponential sums indexed by a subgroup of invertible classes modulo some prime power $q$. For fixed $d$, we restrict to moduli $q$ so that there is a unique subgroup of invertible classes modulo $q$ of order $d$. We study distribution properties of these families of sums as $q$ grows and we establish equidistribution results in some regions of the complex plane which are described as the image of a multi-dimensional torus via an explicit Laurent polynomial. In some cases, the region of equidistribution can be interpreted as the one delimited by a hypocycloid, or as a Mi…
We prove that the Kloosterman sum $S(1,1;c)$ can change sign infinitely often as $c$ runs over squarefree moduli with at most 10 prime factors, which improves the previous results of E. Fouvry and Ph. Michel, J. Sivak-Fischler and K. Matomäki, replacing 10 by 23, 18 and 15, respectively. The method combines the Selberg sieve, equidistribution of Kloosterman sums and spectral theory of automorphic forms.
A result of Habegger shows that there are only finitely many singular moduli such that $j$ or $j-α$ is an algebraic unit. The result uses Duke's Equidistribution Theorem and is thus not effective. For a fixed $j$-invariant $α\in \bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ of an elliptic curve without complex multiplication, we prove that there are only finitely many singular moduli $j$ such that $j-α$ is an algebraic unit. The difference to the work of Habegger is that we give explicit bounds.
We establish a joint distribution result concerning the fractional part of $αp^θ$ for $θ\in (0,1), \ α>0$, where $p$ is a prime satisfying a Chebotarev condition in a fixed finite Galois extension over $\mathbb{Q}$. As an application, for a fixed non-CM elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, an asymptotic formula is given for the number of primes at the extremes of the Sato-Tate measure modulo a large prime $\ell$. These are precisely the primes $p$ for which the Frobenius trace $a_p(E)$ satisfies the congruence $a_p(E)\equiv [2\sqrt{p}] \bmod \ell$. We assume a zero-free region hypothesis for Dedekin…
This paper surveys some applications of moduli theory to issues concerning the distribution of rational points on algebraic varieties. It will appear on the proceedings of the Fano Conference.
We show that there are infinitely many primes $p$ such that $p-1$ is divisible by a square $d^2 \geq p^θ$ for $θ=1/2+1/2000.$ This improves the work of Matomäki (2009) who obtained the result for $θ=1/2-\varepsilon$ (with the added constraint that $d$ is also a prime), which improved the result of Baier and Zhao (2006) with $θ=4/9-\varepsilon.$ Similarly as in the work of Matomäki, we apply Harman's sieve method to detect primes $p \equiv 1 \, (d^2)$. To break the $θ=1/2$ barrier we prove a new bilinear equidistribution estimate modulo smooth square moduli $d^2$ by using a similar argument as …
We discuss Manin's conjecture concerning the distribution of rational points of bounded height on Del Pezzo surfaces, and its refinement by Peyre, and explain applications of universal torsors to counting problems. To illustrate the method, we provide a proof of Manin's conjecture for the unique split singular quartic Del Pezzo surface with a singularity of type D4. Corentin Perret-Gentil proved, under some very general conditions, that short sums of $\ell$-adic trace functions over finite fields of varying center converges in law to a Gaussian random variable or vector. The main inputs are P.~Deligne's equidistribution theorem, N.~Katz' works and the results surveyed in \cite{MR3338119}. In particular, this applies to $2$-dimensional Kloosterman sums $\mathsf{Kl}_{2,\mathbb{F}_q}$ studied by N.~Katz in \cite{MR955052} and in \cite{MR1081536} when the field $\mathbb{F}_q$ gets large. \par This article considers the case of short sums of normalized classic…
We resolve a function field version of two conjectures concerning the variance of the number of primes in short intervals (Goldston and Montgomery) and in arithmetic progressions (Hooley). A crucial ingredient in our work are recent equidistribution results of N. Katz.
We establish the equidistribution with respect to the bifurcation measure of post-critically finite maps in any one-dimensional algebraic family of unicritical polynomials. Using this equidistribution result, together with a combinatorial analysis of certain algebraic correspondences on the complement of the Mandelbrot set $M_2$ (or generalized Mandelbrot set $M_d$ for degree $d>2$), we classify all complex plane curves $C$ with Zariski-dense subsets of points $(a,b)\in C$, such that both $z^d+a$ and $z^d+b$ are simultaneously post-critically finite for a fixed degree $d\geq 2$. Our result is …
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of primes of the shape $a^2 +p^4$, thereby refining the well known work of Friedlander and Iwaniec. Along the way, we prove a result on equidistribution of primes up to $x$, in which the moduli may be almost as large as $x^2$.
If phi(z) is a rational function on P^1 of degree at least 2 with coefficients in a number field k, we compute the homogeneous transfinite diameter of the v-adic filled Julia sets of phi for all places v of k by introducing a new quantity called the homogeneous sectional capacity. In particular, we show that the product over all places of these homogeneous transfinite diameters is 1. We apply this product formula and some new potential-theoretic results concerning Green's functions on Riemann surfaces and Berkovich spaces to prove an adelic equidistribution theorem for dynamical systems on the…
In the present paper, we study a new kind of anabelian phenomenon concerning the smooth pointed stable curves in positive characteristic. It shows that the topological structures of moduli spaces of curves can be understood from the viewpoint of anabelian geometry. We formulate some new anabelian-geometric conjectures relating the tame fundamental groups of curves over algebraically closed fields of characteristic $p>0$ to the moduli spaces of curves. These conjectures are generalized versions of the weak Isom-version of the Grothendieck conjecture for curves over algebraically closed fields o…
A dormant indigenous bundle is an integrable projective line bundle on a proper hyperbolic curve of positive characteristic satisfying certain conditions. Dormant indigenous bundles were introduced and studied in the $p$-adic Teichmuller theory developed by S. Mochizuki. Kirti Joshi proposed a conjecture concerning an explicit formula for the degree over the moduli stack of curves of the moduli stack classifying dormant indigenous bundles. In this paper, we give a proof for this conjecture of Joshi.
We show how to speed up the computation of isomorphisms of hyperelliptic curves by using covariants. We also obtain new theoretical and practical results concerning models of these curves over their field of moduli.
We compute the statistics of $SL_{d}(\mathbb{Z})$ matrices lying on level sets of an integral polynomial defined on $SL_{d}(\mathbb{R})$, a result that is a variant of the well known theorem proved by Linnik about the equidistribution of radially projected integral vectors from a large sphere into the unit sphere. Using the above result we generalize the work of Aka, Einsiedler and Shapira in various directions. For example, we compute the joint distribution of the residue classes modulo $q$ and the properly normalized orthogonal lattices of primitive integral vectors lying on the level set $-…
A new proof of an old theorem of Drinfeld concerning the representability of the moduli problem of special formal $\mathcal{O}_{D}$-modules by Deligne's $p$-adic formal model of Drinfeld's upper half-plane is given for $d=2.$ The display associated to the universal object is constructed explicitly.
We study the postcritically-finite (PCF) maps in the moduli space of complex polynomials $\mathrm{MP}_d$. For a certain class of rational curves $C$ in $\mathrm{MP}_d$, we characterize the condition that $C$ contains infinitely many PCF maps. In particular, we show that if $C$ is parameterized by polynomials, then there are infinitely many PCF maps in $C$ if and only if there is exactly one active critical point along $C$, up to symmetries; we provide the critical orbit relation satisfied by any pair of active critical points. For the curves $\mathrm{Per}_1(λ)$ in the space of cubic polynomial…
In this article, we combine complex-analytic and arithmetic tools to study the preperiodic points of one-dimensional complex dynamical systems. We show that for any fixed complex numbers a and b, and any integer d at least 2, the set of complex numbers c for which both a and b are preperiodic for z^d+c is infinite if and only if a^d = b^d. This provides an affirmative answer to a question of Zannier, which itself arose from questions of Masser concerning simultaneous torsion sections on families of elliptic curves. Using similar techniques, we prove that if two complex rational functions f and…
