In section 1, we show that if $X$ is a Stein normal complex space of dimension n and $D\subset \subset X$ an open subset which is the union of an increasing sequence $D_{1}\subset D_{2}\subset ...\subset D_{n}\subset >...$ of domains of holomorphy in $X$. Then $D$ is a domain of holomorphy.
In section 2, we prove that a domain of holomorphy $D$ which is relatively compact in a 2-dimensional normal Stein space $X$ itself is Stein.
In section 3, we show that if $X$ is a Stein space of dimension n and $D\subset X$ an open subspace which is the union of an increasing sequence $D_{1}\subset D_{2}\subset ...\subset D_{n}\subset ...$ of open Stein subsets of $X$. then $D$ itself is Stein, if $X$ has isolated singularities.
We study holomorphic foliations tangent to singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in compact complex manifolds of complex dimension two. We give some hypotheses to guarantee the existence of dicritical singularities of these objects. As consequence, we give some applications to holomorphic foliations tangent to real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces with singularities in $\mathbb{P}^2$.
We establish an effective criterion for a dicritical singularity of a real analytic Levi-flat hypersurface. The criterion is stated in terms of the Segre varieties. As an application, we obtain a structure theorem for some class of currents in the nondicritical case.
We study Levi-flat real analytic hypersurfaces with singularities. We prove that the Levi foliation on the regular part of the hypersurface can be holomorphically extended, in a suitable sense, to neighbourhoods of singular points.
We solve the Levi-flat Plateau problem in the following case. Let $M \subset {\mathbb C}^{n+1}$, $n \geq 2$, be a connected compact real-analytic codimension-two submanifold with only nondegenerate CR singularities. Suppose $M$ is a diffeomorphic image via a real-analytic CR map of a real-analytic hypersurface in ${\mathbb C}^n \times {\mathbb R}$ with only nondegenerate CR singularities. Then there exists a unique compact real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurface, nonsingular except possibly for self-intersections, with boundary $M$. We also study boundary regularity of CR automorphisms of domains…
Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of dimension at least 3. Given a compact codimension 2 real analytic submanifold $M$ of $X$, that is the boundary of a compact Levi-flat hypersurface $H$, we study the regularity of $H$. Suppose that the CR singularities of $M$ are an $\mathcal{O}(X)$-convex set. For example, suppose $M$ has only finitely many CR singularities, which is a generic condition. Then $H$ must in fact be a real analytic submanifold. If $M$ is real algebraic, it follows that $H$ is real algebraic and in fact extends past $M$, even near CR singularities. To prove these results we provide tw…
We study singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex projective space. We define the rank of an algebraic Levi-flat hypersurface and study the connections between rank, degree, and the type and size of the singularity. In particular, we study degenerate singularities of algebraic Levi-flat hypersurfaces. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Levi-flat hypersurface to be a pullback of a real-analytic curve in $\mathbb{C}$ via a meromorphic function. Among other examples, we construct a nonalgebraic semianalytic Levi-flat hypersurface with compact leaves that is a …
Consider the Bergman kernel $K^B(z)$ of the domain $\ellip = \{z \in \Comp^n ; \sum_{j=1}^n |z_j|^{2m_j}<1 \}$, where $m=(m_1,\ldots,m_n) \in \Natl^n$ and $m_n \neq 1$. Let $z^0 \in \partial \ellip$ be any weakly pseudoconvex point, $k \in \Natl$ the degenerate rank of the Levi form at $z^0$. An explicit formula for $K^B(z)$ modulo analytic functions is given in terms of the polar coordinates $(t_1, \ldots, t_k, r)$ around $z^0$. This formula provides detailed information about the singularities of $K^B(z)$, which improves the result of A. Bonami and N. Lohoué \cite{bol}. A similar result is e…
We discuss domains of holomorphy and several notions of pseudoconvexity (drawing parallels with the corresponding notions from geometric convexity), and present a mostly self-contained solution to the Levi problem. We restrict our attention to domains of $\mathbb C^n$.
In this paper we consider germs of smooth Levi flat hypersurfaces, under the following notion of local equivalence: S_1 ~ S_2 if their one-sided neighborhoods admit a biholomorphism smooth up to the boundary. We introduce a simple invariant for this relation, which allows to prove some characterizations of triviality (i.e. equivalence to the hyperplane). Then, we employ the same invariant to construct infinitely many non-trivial classes, including an infinite family of not equivalent hypersurfaces which are almost everywhere analytic.
Let U be a pseudoconvex open set in a complex manifold M. When is U a Stein manifold? There are classical counter examples due to Grauert, even when U has real-analytic boundary or has strictly pseudoconvex points. We give new criteria for the Steinness of U and we analyze the obstructions. The main tool is the notion of Levi-currents. They are positive $\ddbar$-closed currents T of bidimension (1,1) and of mass 1 directed by the directions where all continuous psh functions in $U$ have vanishing Levi-form. The extremal ones, are supported on the sets where all continuous psh functions are con…
Suppose $G$ is a connected complex Lie group and $H$ is a closed complex subgroup. Then there exists a closed complex subgroup $J$ of $G$ containing $H$ such that the fibration $π:G/H \to G/J$ is the holomorphic reduction of $G/H$, i.e., $G/J$ is holomorphically separable and ${\mathcal O}(G/H) \cong π^*{\mathcal O}(G/J)$. In this paper we prove that if $G/H$ is pseudoconvex, i.e., if $G/H$ admits a continuous plurisubharmonic exhaustion function, then $G/J$ is Stein and $J/H$ has no non--constant holomorphic functions.
We study the local equivalence problem for five dimensional real hypersurfaces $M^5$ of $\mathbb{C}^3$ which are $2$-nondegenerate and of constant Levi rank $1$ under biholomorphisms. We find two invariants, $J$ and $W$, which are expressed explicitly in terms of the graphing function $F$ of $M$, the annulation of which give a necessary and sufficient condition for $M$ to be locally biholomorphic to a model hypersurface, the tube over the light cone. If one of the two invariants $J$ or $W$ does not vanish on $M$, we show that the equivalence problem under biholomophisms reduces to an equivalen…
The complex Plateau problem is analogous, in a Hermitian complex manifold, to the classical Plateau problem in 3 dimensional real space: it is a geometrical problem of extension of a closed real manifold into a complex analytic subvariety, or into a Levi-flat subvariety. Minimality of complex analytic subvarieties and analogous properties of Levi-flat subvarieties, in Kähler manifolds, are recalled or given. Known results in n dimensional complex and projective complex spaces are recalled. Extensions to real parametric problems are solved or proposed, leading to the construction of Levi-flat h…
Here we chronologically summarize briefly the developments of the Levi (Hartogs' Inverse) Problem together with the notion of coherence and its solution, shedding light on some records which have not been discussed in the past references. In particular, we will discuss K. Oka's unpublished papers 1943 which solved the Levi (Hartogs' Inverse) Problem for unramified Riemann domains of arbitrary dimension $n \geq 2$, usually referred as it was solved by Oka IX in 1953, H.J. Bremermann and F. Norguet in 1954 for univalent domains, independently. At the end we emphasize an open problem in a ramifie…
A Lipschitz hypersurface is a hypersurface which locally is the graph of a Lipschitz function. A Lipschitz (or C^1) hypersurface is said to be Levi-flat if it is locally foliated by complex manifolds of complex dimension (n-1). We shall prove that there exist no Lipschitz Levi-flat hypersurfaces in CP^n with n >= 3. Our new estimates on the d-bar-Cauchy problems are different from the earlier Siu's integral kernal method.
We give a complete classification of polynomial models for smooth real hypersurfaces of finite Catlin multitype in $\mathbb C^3$, which admit nonlinear infinitesimal CR automorphisms. As a consequence, we obtain a sharp 1-jet determination result for any smooth hypersurface with such model. The results also prove a conjecture of the first author about the origin of such nonlinear automorphisms (AIM list of problems, 2010). As another consequence, we describe all possible dimensions of the Lie algebra of infinitesimal CR automorphisms, which leads to a new "secondary" gap phenomenon.
We construct a family of small analytic discs attached to Levi non-degenerate hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$, which is globally biholomorphically invariant. We then apply this technique to study unique determination problems along Levi non-degenerate hypersurfaces that are merely of class $\mathcal{C}^4$. This method gives 2-jet determination results for germs of biholomorphisms, CR diffeomorphisms, as well as in the almost complex setting.
This article is dedicated to the centenary of the local CR equivalence problem, formulated by Henri Poincaré in 1907. The first part gives an account of Poincaré's heuristic counting arguments, suggesting existence of infinitely many local CR invariants. Then we sketch the beautiful completion of Poincaré's approach to the problem in the work of Chern and Moser on Levi nondegenerate hypersurfaces. The last part is an overview of recent progress in solving the problem on Levi degenerate manifolds.
A complex space $X$ is in class ${\mathcal Q}_G$ if it is a semistable quotient of the complement to an analytic subset of a Stein manifold by a holomorphic action of a reductive complex Lie group $G$. It is shown that every pseudoconvex unramified domain over $X$ is also in ${\mathcal Q}_G$.
In an earlier paper the authors provided general conditions on a real codimension 2 submanifold $S\subset C^{n}$, $n\ge 3$, such that there exists a possibly singular Levi-flat hypersurface $M$ bounded by $S$. In this paper we consider the case when $S$ is a graph of a smooth function over the boundary of a bounded strongly convex domain $Ω\subset C^{n-1}\times R$ and show that in this case $M$ is necessarily a graph of a smooth function over $Ω$. In particular, $M$ is non-singular.
Let $G$ be a unimodular Lie group, $X$ a compact manifold with boundary, and $M$ the total space of a principal bundle $G\to M\to X$ so that $M$ is also a strongly pseudoconvex complex manifold. In this work, we show that if $G$ acts by holomorphic transformations satisfying a local property, then the space of square-integrable holomorphic functions on $M$ is infinite $G$-dimensional.
This thesis starts from a review on current research on the local hypoellipticity of the $\bar\partial$-Neumann problem. It presents the classical method of regularity from estimates of the energy: subelliptic as well as superlogarithmic. More recent material is included in which the regularity of the solution is obtained from the geometry of the singularities of the Levi form. The new contribution to this discussion consists in a general weighted Kohn-Hörmander-Morrey formula twisted by a pseudodifferential operator. As an application, a new class of domains for which the $\bar\partial$-Neuma…
Let M be a CR manifold of hypersurface type, which is Levi degenerate but also satisfying a k-nondegeneracy condition at all points. This might be only if dim M is greater than or equal to 5 and if dim M = 5, then k= 2 at all points. We prove that for any 5-dimensional, uniformly 2-nondegenerate CR manifold M there exists a canonical Cartan connection, modelled on a suitable projective completion of the tube over the future light cone {z\in C^3: (x^1)^2+(x^2)^2-(x^3)^2 = 0, x^3>0}. This determines a complete solution to the equivalence problem for this class of CR manifolds.
Let $Ω$ be a pseudoconvex domain with $C^2$-smooth boundary in $\mathbb CP^n$. We prove that the $\bar\partial-Neumann operator $N$ exists for $(p,q)$-forms on $Ω$. Furthermore, there exists a $t_0>0$ such that the operators $N$, $\bar\partial^*N$, $\bar\partial N$ and the Bergman projection are regular in the Sobolev space $W^t (\barΩ) $ for $t<t_0$. The boundary estimates above have applications in complex geometry. We use the estimates to prove the nonexistence of $C^{2, α}$ real Levi-flat hypersurfaces in $\mathbb CP^n$. We also show that there exist no non-zero $L^2$-holomorphic $(p, 0)$-…
In this paper we prove the following theorem. Main Theorem. Let n >= 3 and m >= 3n/2 +7. Then there exists no C^m Levi-flat real hypersurface M in P_n. The condition that M is Levi-flat means that when M is locally defined by the vanishing of a C^m real-valued function f, at every point of M the restriction of d d-bar f to the complex tangent space of M is identically zero. The case of the nonexistence of C^\infty Levi-flat real hypersurface in P_2 is motivated by problems in dynamical systems in P_2.
For certain real hypersurfaces in the projective space, of signature (1,n), we study the filling problem for small deformations of the CR structure (the other signatures being well understood). We characterize the deformations which are fillable, and prove that they have infinite codimension in the set of all CR structures. This result generalizes the cases of the 3-sphere and of signature (1,1) to higher dimension.
We address the problem of existence and uniqueness of a Levi-flat hypersurface $M$ in $C^n$ with prescribed compact boundary $S$ for $n\ge3$. The situation for $n\ge3$ differs sharply from the well studied case $n=2$. We first establish necessary conditions on $S$ at both complex and CR points, needed for the existence of $M$. All CR points have to be nonminimal and all complex points have to be "flat". Then, adding a positivity condition at complex points, which is similar to the ellipticity for $n=2$ and excluding the possibility of $S$ to contain complex $(n-2)$-dimensional submanifolds, we…
We introduce a new geometrical invariant of CR manifolds of hypersurface type, which we dub the "Levi core" of the manifold. When the manifold is the boundary of a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain, we show how the Levi core is related to two other important global invariants in several complex variables: the Diederich--Fornæss index and the D'Angelo class (namely the set of D'Angelo forms of the boundary). We also show that the Levi core is trivial whenever the domain is of finite-type in the sense of D'Angelo, or the set of weakly pseudoconvex points is contained in a totally real submanifo…
We prove integral formulas for closed hypersurfaces in C^{n+1}, which furnish a relation between elementary symmetric functions in the eigenvalues of the complex Hessian matrix of the defining function and the Levi curvatures of the hypersurface. Then we follow the Reilly approach to prove an isoperimetric inequality. As an application, we obtain the ``Soap Bubble Theorem'' for star-shaped domains with positive and constant Levi curvatures bounding the classical mean curvature from above.
