Recent results on the linearity of braid groups are extended in two ways. We generalize the Lawrence Krammer representation as well as Krammer's faithfulness proof for this linear representation to Artin groups of finite type.
We introduce tangles of type $E_n$ and construct a representation of the Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebra (BMW algebra) of type $E_6$. As a representation of the Artin group of type $E_6$, this representation is equivalent to the faithful Cohen-Wales representation of type $E_6$ that was used to show the linearity of the Artin group of type $E_6$. We find a reducibility criterion for this representation and complex values of the parameters for which the algebra is not semisimple.
Recently, Cohen and Wales built a faithful linear representation of the Artin group of type $D_n$, hence showing the linearity of this group. It was later discovered that this representation is reducible for some complex values of its two parameters. It was also shown that when the representation is reducible, the action on a proper invariant subspace is a Hecke algebra action of type $D_n$. The goal of this paper is to classify these proper invariant subspaces in terms of Specht modules indexed by double partitions of the integer $n$. This work is the continuation of arXiv:1103.5673
By analyzing known presentations of the pure mapping groups of orientable surfaces of genus $g$ with $b$ boundary components and $n$ punctures, we show that these groups are isomorphic to some groups related to the braid groups and the Artin group of type $D_4$ in the cases when $g=0$ with $b$ and $n$ arbitrary, and when $g=1$ and $b+n$ is at most $3$. As a corollary, we conclude that the pure mapping class groups are linear in these cases.
Yu. I. Merzljakov developed a method of splittable coordinates which helps to verify the linearity of some groups, he established some fundamental results using this method. In this paper we use the method of splittable coordinates and find some sufficient condition under which the semi--direct product of two linear groups is linear. As consequence we get linearity of some HNN-extensions of a free group, linearity of the holomorph of the braid group B_n, n >1, and linearity of some Artin groups. In all cases we construct faithful linear representations in the explicit form.
We study the local homology of Artin groups using weighted discrete Morse theory. In all finite and affine cases, we are able to construct Morse matchings of a special type (we call them "precise matchings"). The existence of precise matchings implies that the homology has a square-free torsion. This property was known for Artin groups of finite type, but not in general for Artin groups of affine type. We also use the constructed matchings to compute the local homology in all exceptional cases, correcting some results in the literature.
The Artin exponent induced from cyclic subgroups of finite groups was studied extensively by T.Y. Lam. A Burnside ring theoretic version of Lam's results for $p$-groups was given by the author in an earlier paper. Here we look at the Artin exponent induced from the elementary abelian subgroups of finite $p$-groups using some results of A. Dress.
Let $A_L$ be the right-angled Artin group associated to a finite flag complex $L$. We show that the amenable category of $A_L$ equals the virtual cohomological dimension of the right-angled Coxeter group $W_L$. In particular, right-angled Artin groups satisfy a question of Capovilla--Löh--Moraschini proposing an inequality between the amenable category and Farber's topological complexity.
Lawrence-Krammer representations (LK-representations for short) are linear representations of Artin-Tits groups of small type, which are of importance since they are known to be faithful when the type is spherical, or more generally when restricted to the monoid. If the construction is essentially unique for a given small and spherical type, the structure of the set of LK-representations for a given small type is not understood in general. Another important question is to ask if there exists an analogue of this construction in the non-small cases ; a first answer is given in [Digne, On the lin…
Let G be a right-angled Artin group. We use geometric methods to compute a presentation of the subgroup H of Aut(G) consisting of the automorphisms that send each generator to a conjugate of itself. This generalizes a result of McCool on basis-conjugating automorphisms of free groups.
This thesis takes Brady's construction of $K(π,1)$s for the braid groups as a starting point. It is widely known that this construction can - with the right ingredients - be generalized to Artin groups of finite type. Results of Bessis as well as Brady and Watt are used to establish the general construction for Artin groups of finite type. The non-crossing partition lattice in finite Coxeter groups is identified and used to generate the so called poset group. With the help of this poset group, which turns out to be isomorphic to the Artin group, a simplicial complex is constructed on which the…
In this article, we study the property of being equationally Artinian in groups. We prove that a finite extension of an equationally Artinian group is again equationally Artinian. We also show that a quotient of an equationally Artinian group of the form $G[t]$ by a normal subgroup which is a finite union of radicals, is again equationally Artnian. This provides a large class of examples of equationally Artinian groups.
We observe that, for each positive integer n > 2, each of the Artin groups of finite type A_n, B_n=C_n, and affine type \tilde A_{n-1} and \tilde C_{n-1} is a central extension of a finite index subgroup of the mapping class group of the (n+2)-punctured sphere. (The centre is trivial in the affine case and infinite cyclic in the finite type cases). Using results of Ivanov and Korkmaz on abstract commensurators of surface mapping class groups we are able to determine the automorphism groups of each member of these four infinite families of Artin groups.
We generalize the peak-reduction algorithm (Whitehead's theorem) for free groups to a theorem about a general right-angled Artin group A_Gamma. As an application, we find a finite presentation for the automorphism group Aut A_Gamma that generalizes McCool's presentation for the automorphism group of a finite rank free group. We also give consider a stronger generalization of peak-reduction, giving a counterexample and proving a special case.
We show that every finitely generated Artin-Tits group admits a finite Garside family, by introducing the notion of a low element in a Coxeter group and proving that the family of all low elements in a Coxeter system (W, S) with S finite includes S and is finite and closed under suffix and join with respect to the right weak order.
We show that many $2$-dimensional Artin groups are residually finite. This includes $3$-generator Artin groups with labels $\geq 4$ except for $(2m+1, 4,4)$ for any $m\geq 2$. As a first step towards residual finiteness we show that these Artin groups, and many more, split as free products with amalgamation or HNN extensions of finite rank free groups. Among others, this holds for all large type Artin groups with defining graph admitting an orientation, where each simple cycle is directed.
We show that a triangle Artin group $\text{Art}_{MNP}$ where $M\leq N\leq P$ splits as an amalgamated product or an HNN extension of finite rank free groups, provided that either $M>2$, or $N>3$. We also prove that all even three generator Artin groups are residually finite.
We study various aspects of the structure and representation theory of singular Artin monoids. This includes a number of generalizations of the desingularization map and explicit presentations for certain finite quotient monoids of diagrammatic nature. The main result is a categorification of the classical desingularization map for singular Artin monoids associated to finite Weyl groups using BGG category $\mathcal{O}$.
Let $A$ be an Artin group. A partition $\mathcal{P}$ of the set of standard generators of $A$ is called admissible if, for all $X,Y \in \mathcal{P}$, $X \neq Y$, there is at most one pair $(s,t) \in X \times Y$ which has a relation. An admissible partition $\mathcal{P}$ determines a quotient Coxeter graph $Γ/\mathcal{P}$. We prove that, if $Γ/\mathcal{P}$ is either a forest or an even triangle free Coxeter graph and $A_X$ is residually finite for all $X \in \mathcal{P}$, then $A$ is residually finite.
We introduce the class of perturbed right-angled Artin groups. These are constructed by gluing Bieri double groups into standard right-angled Artin groups. As a first application of this construction we obtain families of CAT(0) groups containing finitely presented subgroups which are not of type $\mathrm{FP}_3$, and have exponential, or polynomial Dehn functions of prescribed degree.
We determine the image of the Artin groups of types B and D inside the Iwahori-Hecke algebras, when defined over finite fields, in the semisimple case. This generalizes earlier work on type A by Brunat, Magaard and Marin. In this multi-parameter case, this image depends heavily on the parameters.
In this article, we find a lower bound for the order of the coset x+b in the Artin-Schreier extension $\mathbb F_q[x]/(x^p-x-a)$, where $b\in\mathbb F_q$ that satisfies a generic special condition.
Artin groups of finite type are not as well understood as braid groups. This is due to the additional geometric properties of braid groups coming from their close connection to mapping class groups. For each Artin group of finite type, we construct a space (simplicial complex) analogous to Teichmueller space that satisfies a weak nonpositive curvature condition and also a space "at infinity" analogous to the space of projective measured laminations. Using these constructs, we deduce several group-theoretic properties of Artin groups of finite type that are well-known in the case of braid group…
Parabolic subgroups are the building blocks of Artin groups. This paper extends previous results, known only for parabolic subgroups of finite type Artin groups, to parabolic subgroups of FC type Artin groups. We show that the class of finite type parabolic subgroups is closed under intersection. We also study an analog of the curve complex for mapping class group constructed using parabolic subgroups. We extend the construction of the complex of parabolic subgroups to FC type Artin groups. We show that this simplicial complex is, in most cases, infinite diameter and conjecture that it is $δ-$…
We prove that if $R$ is a commutative Noetherian local pro-$p$domain of characteristic 0 then every finitely generated$R$-standard group is $R$-linear.
We prove that every finitely-generated right-angled Artin group can be embedded into some Brin-Thompson group $nV$. It follows that many other groups can be embedded into some $nV$ (e.g., any finite extension of any of Haglund and Wise's special groups), and that various decision problems involving subgroups of $nV$ are unsolvable.
We prove that every subnormal subgroup of p-power index in a right-angled Artin group is conjugacy p-separable. As an application, we prove that every right-angled Artin group is conjugacy separable in the class of torsion-free nilpotent groups. As another application, we prove that the outer automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group is virtually residually p-finite. We also prove that the Torelli group of a right-angled group is residually torsion-free nilpotent, hence residually p-finite and bi-orderable.
We prove that finite index subgroups of right angled Artin groups are conjugacy separable. We then apply this result to establish various properties of other classes of groups. In particular, we show that any word hyperbolic Coxeter group contains a conjugacy separable subgroup of finite index and has a residually finite outer automorphism group. Another consequence of the main result is that Bestvina-Brady groups are conjugacy separable and have solvable conjugacy problem.
We show that for a sufficiently simple surface $S$, a right-angled Artin group $A(Γ)$ embeds into $\Mod(S)$ if and only if $Γ$ embeds into the curve graph $\mC(S)$ as an induced subgraph. When $S$ is sufficiently complicated, there exists an embedding $A(Γ)\to\Mod(S)$ for some $Γ$ not contained in $\mC(S)$.
There exist right angled Artin groups $A$ such that the isomorphism problem for finitely presented subgroups of $A$ is unsolvable, and for certain finitely presented subgroups the conjugacy and membership problems are unsolvable. It follows that if $S$ is a surface of finite type and the genus of $S$ is sufficiently large, then the corresponding decision problems for the mapping class group $Mod(S)$ are unsolvable. Every virtually special group embeds in the mapping class group of infinitely many closed surfaces. Examples are given of finitely presented subgroups of mapping class groups that h…
Let $G$ and $G'$ be two right-angled Artin groups (RAAG). We show they are quasi-isometric iff they are isomorphic, under the assumption that $Out(G)$ and $Out(G')$ are finite. If only $Out(G)$ is finite, then $G'$ is quasi-isometric $G$ iff $G'$ is isomorphic to a finite index subgroup of $G$. In this case, we give an algorithm to determine whether $G$ and $G'$ are quasi-isometric by looking at their defining graphs.
A classical result of Schreier states that nontrivial finitely generated normal subgroups of free groups are of finite index, that is, free groups can only quotient to finite groups with finitely generated kernel. In this note we extend this result to the class of right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs). More precisely, we prove that the quotient of a RAAG by a finitely generated (full) normal subgroup is abelian-by-finite and finite-by-abelian. As Schreier's result extends to nontrivial free products of groups, we further show that our result extends to graph products of groups. As a corollary, we …
We show that every right-angled Artin group AG defined by a graph G of finite chromatic number is poly-free with poly-free length bounded between the clique number and the chromatic number of G. Further, a characterization of all right-angled Artin groups of poly-free length 2 is given, namely the group AG has poly-free length 2 if and only if there exists an independent set of vertices D in G such that every cycle in G meets D at least twice. Finally, it is shown that AG is a semidirect product of 2 free groups of finite rank if and only if G is a finite tree or a finite complete bipartite gr…
We introduce the notion of metrically systolic simplicial complexes. We study geometric and large-scale properties of such complexes and of groups acting on them geometrically. We show that all two-dimensional Artin groups act geometrically on metrically systolic complexes. As direct corollaries we obtain new results on two-dimensional Artin groups and all their finitely presented subgroups: we prove that the Conjugacy Problem is solvable, and that the Dehn function is quadratic. We also show several large-scale features of finitely presented subgroups of two-dimensional Artin groups, lying ba…
For a finite graph $Γ$, let $G(Γ)$ be the right-angled Artin group defined by the complement graph of $Γ$. We show that, for any linear forest $Λ$ and any finite graph $Γ$, $G(Λ)$ can be embedded into $G(Γ)$ if and only if $Λ$ can be realised as a full subgraph of $Γ$. We also prove that if we drop the assumption that $Λ$ is a linear forest, then the above assertion does not hold, namely, for any finite graph $Λ$, which is not a linear forest, there exists a finite graph $Γ$ such that $G(Λ)$ can be embedded into $G(Γ)$, though $Λ$ cannot be embedded into $Γ$ as a full subgraph.
An Artin HNN-extension is an HNN-extension of an Artin group in which the stable letter conjugates a pair of suitably chosen subsets of the standard generating set. We show that some finite index subgroup of an Artin HNN-extension embeds in an Artin group. We also obtain an analogous result for Coxeter groups.
We consider the outer automorphism group Out(A_Gamma) of the right-angled Artin group A_Gamma of a random graph Gamma on n vertices in the Erdos--Renyi model. We show that the functions (log(n)+log(log(n)))/n and 1-(log(n)+log(log(n)))/n bound the range of edge probability functions for which Out(A_Gamma) is finite: if the probability of an edge in Gamma is strictly between these functions as n grows, then asymptotically Out(A_Gamma) is almost surely finite, and if the edge probability is strictly outside of both of these functions, then asymptotically Out(A_Gamma) is almost surely infinite. T…
Based on a thorough theory of the Artin transfer homomorphism \(T_{G,H}:\,G\to H/H^\prime\) from a group \(G\) to the abelianization \(H/H^\prime\) of a subgroup \(H\le G\) of finite index \(n=(G:H)\), and its connection with the permutation representation \(G\to S_n\) and the monomial representation \(G\to H\wr S_n\) of \(G\), the Artin pattern \(G\mapsto(τ(G),\varkappa(G))\), which consists of families \(τ(G)=(H/H^\prime)_{H\le G}\), resp. \(\varkappa(G)=(\ker(T_{G,H}))_{H\le G}\), of transfer targets, resp. transfer kernels, is defined for the vertices \(G\in\mathcal{T}\) of any descendant …
We study C*-algebras generated by left regular representations of right LCM one-relator monoids and Artin-Tits monoids of finite type. We obtain structural results concerning nuclearity, ideal structure and pure infiniteness. Moreover, we compute K-theory. Based on our K-theory results, we develop a new way of computing K-theory for certain group C*-algebras and crossed products.
We study the algebraic structure of the automorphism group of a general right-angled Artin group. We show that this group is virtually torsion-free and has finite virtual cohomological dimension. This generalizes results proved by the authors and John Crisp (arXiv:math/0610980) for two-dimensional right-angled Artin groups.
We show that for each positive integer $k$ there exist right-angled Artin groups containing free-by-cyclic subgroups whose monodromy automorphisms grow as $n^k$. As a consequence we produce examples of right-angled Artin groups containing finitely presented subgroups whose Dehn functions grow as $n^{k+2}$.
We show that Artin groups of extra-large type, and more generally Artin groups of large and hyperbolic type, are hierarchically hyperbolic. This implies in particular that these groups have finite asymptotic dimension and uniform exponential growth. We prove these results by using a combinatorial approach to hierarchical hyperbolicity, via the action of these groups on a new complex that is quasi-isometric both to the coned-off Deligne complex introduced by Martin-Przytycki and to a generalisation due to Morris-Wright of the graph of irreducible parabolic subgroups of finite type introduced by…
We prove the $K(π,1)$ conjecture for affine Artin groups: the complexified complement of an affine reflection arrangement is a classifying space. This is a long-standing problem, due to Arnol'd, Pham, and Thom. Our proof is based on recent advancements in the theory of dual Coxeter and Artin groups, as well as on several new results and constructions. In particular: we show that all affine noncrossing partition posets are EL-shellable; we use these posets to construct finite classifying spaces for dual affine Artin groups; we introduce new CW models for the orbit configuration spaces associate…
Let $Γ$ be a simplicial, finite, connected graph such that $Γ$ does not decompose as a nontrivial join. We prove that two notions of strong quasiconvexity and stability are equivalent in the right-angled Artin group $A_Γ$ (except for the case of finite index subgroups). We also characterize non-trivial strongly quasiconvex subgroups of infinite index in $A_Γ$ (i.e. non-trivial stable subgroups in $A_Γ$) by quadratic lower relative divergence. These results strengthen the work of Koberda-Mangahas-Taylor on characterizing purely loxodromic subgroups of right-angled Artin groups.
Let $K$ be a field, and let $\Aut \,K^2$ be the group of polynomial automorphisms of $K^2$. We investigate which subgroups are linear or not. In characteristic zero, there are small nonlinear subgroups and some big linear subgroups. When $K$ has finite characteristic, the whole group $\Aut\,K^2$ is linear whenever $K$ is finite, and nonlinear otherwise.
Consider the mapping class group $\Mod_{g,p}$ of a surface $Σ_{g,p}$ of genus $g$ with $p$ punctures, and a finite collection $\{f_1,...,f_k\}$ of mapping classes, each of which is either a Dehn twist about a simple closed curve or a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism supported on a connected subsurface. In this paper we prove that for all sufficiently large $N$, the mapping classes $\{f_1^N,...,f_k^N\}$ generate a right-angled Artin group. The right-angled Artin group which they generate can be determined from the combinatorial topology of the mapping classes themselves. When $\{f_1,...,f_k\}$ are a…
