By utilizing an irreducible inclusion of type III$_{q^{2}} $ factors coming from a free-product type action of the quantum group $ SU_{q}(2) $, we show that the free group factor $ L(\mathbb {F}_{\infty}) $ possesses irreducible subfactors of arbitrary index $ >4 $. Combined with earlier results of Radulescu, this shows that $ L(\mathbb {F}_{\infty}) $ has irreducible subfactors with any index value in $ \{4\cos ^{2}(π/n):n\geq 3\}\cup [4,+\infty) $.
For an inclusion of the form $\Bbb C\subseteq M_n(\Bbb C)$, where $M_n(\Bbb C)$ is endowed with a state with diagonal weights $λ=(λ_1, ..., λ_n)$, we use Popa's construction, for non-tracial states, to obtain an irreducible inclusion of $II_1$ factors, $N^λ(Q)\subseteq M^λ(Q) $ of index $\sum \frac{1}{λ_i}$. $M^λ(Q)$ is identified with a subfactor inside the centralizer algebra of the canonical free product state on $Q\star M_N(\Bbb C)$. Its structure is described by ``infinite'' semicircular elements as in \cite{Ra3}. The irreducible subfactor inclusions obtained by this method are similar to…
We consider normalizers of an irreducible inclusion $N\subseteq M$ of $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors. In the infinite index setting an inclusion $uNu^*\subseteq N$ can be strict, forcing us to also investigate the semigroup of one-sided normalizers. We relate these normalizers of $N$ in $M$ to projections in the basic construction and show that every trace one projection in the relative commutant $N'\cap < M,e_N>$ is of the form $u^*e_Nu$ for some unitary $u\in M$ with $uNu^*\subseteq N$. This enables us to identify the normalizers and the algebras they generate in several situations. In particular e…
We construct irreducible hyperfinite subfactors of index 6 with a prescribed fundamental group from a large family containing all countable and many uncountable subgroups of R_+. We also prove that there are unclassifiably many irreducible hyperfinite group-type subfactors of index 6 that all have the same standard invariant. More precisely, we associate such a subfactor to every ergodic measure preserving automorphism of the interval [0,1] and prove that the resulting subfactors are isomorphic if and only if the automorphisms are conjugate.
We construct numerous continuous families of irreducible subfactors of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor, which are non-isomorphic, but have all the same standard invariant. In particular, we obtain 1-parameter families of irreducible, non-isomorphic subfactors of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor, which have Jones index 6 and have all the same standard invariant with property (T). We exploit the fact that property (T) groups have uncountably many non-cocycle conjugate cocycle actions on the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor.
We provide a family of group measure space II_1 factors for which all finite index subfactors can be explicitly listed. In particular, the set of all indices of irreducible subfactors can be computed. Concrete examples show that this index set can be any set of natural numbers that is closed under taking divisors.
We introduce a new notion of angle between intermediate subfactors and prove various interesting properties of the angle and relate it with the Jones' index. We prove a uniform 60 to 90 degree bound for the angle between minimal intermediate subfactors of a finite index irreducible subfactor. From this rigidity we can bound the number of minimal (or maximal) intermediate subfactors by the kissing number in geometry. As a consequence, the number intermediate subfactors of an irreducible subfactor has at most exponential growth with respect to the Jones index. This answers a question of Longo pu…
A Krishnan-Sunder subfactor $R_U ßR$ of index $k^2$ is constructed from a permutation biunitary matrix $U\in M_p(\mathbb{C})\otimes M_k(\mathbb{C})$, i.e. the entries of $U$ are either 0 or 1 and both $U$ and its block transpose are unitary. The author previously showed that every irreducible Krishnan-Sunder subfactor has an intermediate subfactor by exhibiting the associated Bisch projection. The author has also shown in a separate paper that the principal and dual graphs of the intermediate subfactor are the same as those of the subfactor $R^{\grp} ßR^{H}$, where $Hß\grp$ is an inclusion of …
Given a subfactor planar algebra P, Guionnet, Jones and Shlyakhtenko give a diagrammatic construction of a II_{1} subfactor whose planar algebra is P. They showed if P is finite-depth, then the factors are interpolated free group factors, and they identified the parameters. We prove if P is infinite-depth, then the factors are isomorphic to L(F\infty}$.
We give a characterization of extremal irreducible discrete subfactors $(N\subseteq M, E)$ where $N$ is type ${\rm II}_1$ in terms of connected W*-algebra objects in rigid C*-tensor categories. We prove an equivalence of categories where the morphisms for discrete inclusions are normal $N-N$ bilinear ucp maps which preserve the state $τ\circ E$, and the morphisms for W*-algebra objects are categorical ucp morphisms. As an application, we get a well-behaved notion of the standard invariant of an extremal irreducible discrete subfactor, together with a subfactor reconstruction theorem. Thus our …
We consider noncommuting pairs P,Q of intermediate subfactors of an irreducible, finite-index inclusion N in M of II_1 factors such that P and Q are supertransitive with Jones index less than 4 over N. We show that up to isomorphism of the standard invariant, there is a unique such pair corresponding to each even value [P:N]=4cos^2(pi/2n) but none for the odd values [P:N]=4cos^2 (pi/(2n+1)). We also classify the angle values which occur between pairs of intermediate subfactors with small index over their intersection: if [P:N] < 4, then the unique nontrivial angle value is always cos^-1 (1/([P…
We extend the Euler's totient function (from arithmetic) to any irreducible subfactor planar algebra, using the Mobius function of its biprojection lattice, as Hall did for the finite groups. We prove that if it is nonzero then there is a minimal 2-box projection generating the identity biprojection. We explain a relation with a problem of K.S. Brown. As an application, we define the dual Euler totient of a finite group and we show that if it is nonzero then the group admits a faithful irreducible complex representation. We also get an analogous result at depth 2, involving the central biproje…
Let H and K be two finite groups with a properly outer action on the II_1 factor M. We prove that the group type inclusions $M^H \subset M \rtimes K$, studied earlier by Bisch and Haagerup, have property T in the sense of Popa if and only if the group generated by H and K in the outer automorphism group of M has Kazhdan's property T. This construction yields irreducible, infinite depth subfactors with small Jones indices and property T standard invariant.
Let $\mathcal M$ be a factor von Neumann algebra with separable predual and let $T\in \mathcal M$. We call $T$ an irreducible operator (relative to $\mathcal M$) if $W^*(T)$ is an irreducible subfactor of $\mathcal M$, i.e., $W^*(T)'\cap \mathcal M={\mathbb C} I$. In this note, we show that the set of irreducible operators in $\mathcal M$ is a dense $G_δ$ subset of $\mathcal M$ in the operator norm. This is a natural generalization of a theorem of Halmos.
We classify irreducible II_1 subfactors A \subset B such that B \ominus A is reducible as an A-A bimodule, with index at most 6+1/5, leaving aside the composite subfactors at index exactly 6. Previous work has already achieved this up to index 3+\sqrt{5} \approx 5.23. We find there are exactly three such subfactors with index in (3+\sqrt{5}, 6+1/5], all with index 3+2\sqrt{2}. One of these comes from SO(3)_q at a root of unity, while the other two appear to be closely related, and are `braided up to a sign'.
Let $N \subset M$ be an irreducible inclusion of type type II$_1$ factors with finite Jones index. We shall introduce the notion of normality for intermediate subfactors of the inclusion $N \subset M$. If the depth of $N \subset M$ is 2, then an intermediate subfactor $K$ for $N \subset M$ is normal in $ N \subset M$ if and only if the depths of $N \subset K$ and $K \subset M$ are both 2. In particular, if $M$ is the crossed product $N \rtimes G$ of a finite group $G$, then $K = N \rtimes H$ is normal in $N \subset M$ if and only if $H$ is a normal subgroup of $G$.
In this series of papers we show that there are exactly ten subfactors, other than $A_\infty$ subfactors, of index between 4 and 5. Previously this classification was known up to index $3+\sqrt{3}$. In the first paper we give an analogue of Haagerup's initial classification of subfactors of index less than $3+\sqrt{3}$, showing that any subfactor of index less than 5 must appear in one of a large list of families. These families will be considered separately in the three subsequent papers in this series.
For a finite-index $\mathrm{II}_1$ subfactor $N \subset M$, we prove the existence of a universal Hopf $\ast$-algebra (or, a discrete quantum group in the analytic language) acting on $M$ in a trace-preserving fashion and fixing $N$ pointwise. We call this Hopf $\ast$-algebra the quantum Galois group for the subfactor and compute it in some examples of interest, notably for arbitrary irreducible finite-index depth-two subfactors. Along the way, we prove the existence of universal acting Hopf algebras for more general structures (tensors in enriched categories), in the spirit of recent work by …
Discrete subfactors include a particular class of infinite index subfactors and all finite index ones. A discrete subfactor is called local when it is braided and it fulfills a commutativity condition motivated by the study of inclusion of Quantum Field Theories in the algebraic Haag-Kastler setting. In [BDG21], we proved that every irreducible local discrete subfactor arises as the fixed point subfactor under the action of a canonical compact hypergroup. In this work, we prove a Galois correspondence between intermediate von Neumann algebras and closed subhypergroups, and we study the subfact…
We study actions of locally compact groups on von Neumann factors and the associated crossed-product von Neumann algebras. In the setting of totally disconnected groups we provide sufficient conditions on an action $G\curvearrowright Q$ ensuring that the inclusion $Q \subset Q \rtimes G$ is irreducible and that every intermediate subfactor is of the form $Q \rtimes H$ for a closed subgroup $H<G$. This partially generalizes a result of Izumi-Longo-Popa [ILP98] and Choda [Ch78]. We moreover show that one can not hope to use their strategy for non-discrete groups.
We consider a type III subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite index with a finite system of braided $N$-$N$ morphisms which includes the irreducible constituents of the dual canonical endomorphism. We apply $α$-induction and, developing further some ideas of Ocneanu, we define chiral generators for the double triangle algebra. Using a new concept of intertwining braiding fusion relations, we show that the chiral generators can be naturally identified with the $α$-induced sectors. A matrix $Z$ is defined and shown to commute with the S- and T-matrices arising from the braiding. If the braiding is non…
A quadrilateral of factors is an irreducible inclusion of factors $N \subset M$ with intermediate subfactors $P$ and $Q$ such that $P$ and $Q$ generate $M$ and the intersection of $P$ and $Q$ is $N$. We investigate the structure of a non-commuting quadrilateral of factors with all the elementary inclusions $P\subset M$, $Q\subset M$, $N\subset P$, and $N\subset Q$ 2-supertransitive. In particular we classify such quadrilaterals with the indices of the elementary subfactors less than or equal to 4. We also compute the angles between $P$ and $Q$ for quadrilaterals coming from $α$-induction and a…
This paper introduces the cyclic subfactors, generalizing the cyclic groups as the subfactors generalize the groups, and generalizing the natural numbers as the maximal subfactors generalize the prime numbers. On one hand, a theorem of O. Ore states that a finite group is cyclic if and only if its subgroups lattice is distributive, and on the other hand, every subgroup of a cyclic group is normal. Then, a subfactor planar algebra is called cyclic if all the biprojections are normal and form a distributive lattice. The main result shows in what sense a cyclic subfactor is singly generated, by g…
We describe the structure of the inclusions of factors A(E) contained in A(E')' associated with multi-intervals E of R for a local irreducible net A of von Neumann algebras on the real line satisfying the split property and Haag duality. In particular, if the net is conformal and the subfactor has finite index, the inclusion associated with two separated intervals is isomorphic to the Longo-Rehren inclusion, which provides a quantum double construction of the tensor category of superselection sectors of A. As a consequence, the index of A(E) in A(E')' coincides with the global index associated…
Given an irreducible local conformal net A of von Neumann algebras on the circle and a finite-index conformal subnet B of A, we show that A is completely rational iff B is completely rational. In particular this extends a result of F. Xu for the orbifold construction. By applying previous results of Xu, many coset models turn out to be completely rational and the structure results in [KLM] hold. Our proofs are based on an analysis of the net inclusion B in A; among other things we show that, for a fixed interval I, every von Neumann algebra R intermediate between B(I) and A(I) comes from an in…
We characterize finite index depth 2 inclusions of type II_1 factors in terms of actions of weak Kac algebras and weak C*-Hopf algebras. If N\subset M \subset M_1 \subset M_2 \subset ... is the Jones tower constructed from such an inclusion N\subset M, then B=M^\prime \cap M_2 has a natural structure of a weak C*-Hopf algebra and there is a minimal action of B on M_1 such that M is the fixed point subalgebra of M_1, and M_2 is isomorphic to the crossed product of M_1 and B. This extends the well-known results for irreducible depth 2 inclusions.
A {\it W$^*$-representation} of a II$_1$ subfactor $N\subset M$ with finite Jones index, $[M:N]<\infty$, is a non-degenerate commuting square embedding of $N\subset M$ into an inclusion of atomic von Neumann algebras $\oplus_{i\in I} \Cal B(\Cal K_i)=\Cal N \subset^{\Cal E} \Cal M=\oplus_{j\in J} \Cal B(\Cal H_j)$. We undertake here a systematic study of this notion, first introduced in [P92], giving examples and considering invariants such as the (bipartite) {\it inclusion graph} $Λ_{\Cal N \subset \Cal M}$, the {\it coupling vector} $(\text{\rm dim}(_M\Cal H_j))_j$ and the {\it RC-algebra} (…
Ore proved that a finite group is cyclic if and only if its subgroup lattice is distributive. Now, since every subgroup of a cyclic group is normal, we call a subfactor planar algebra cyclic if all its biprojections are normal and form a distributive lattice. The main result generalizes one side of Ore's theorem and shows that a cyclic subfactor is singly generated in the sense that there is a minimal 2-box projection generating the identity biprojection. We conjecture that this result holds without assuming the biprojections to be normal, and we show that it is true for small lattices. We fin…
Let $M$ be a II$_1$ factor with a von Neumann subalgebra $Q\subset M$ that has infinite index under any projection in $Q'\cap M$ (e.g., $Q$ abelian; or $Q$ an irreducible subfactor with infinite Jones index). We prove that given any separable subalgebra $B$ of the ultrapower II$_1$ factor $M^ω$, for a non-principal ultrafilter $ω$ on $\Bbb N$, there exists a unitary element $u\in M^ω$ such that $uBu^*$ is orthogonal to $Q^ω$.
We introduce `braidability' as a new symmetry for (infinite) sequences of noncommutative random variables related to representations of the braid group $B_\infty$. It provides an extension of exchangeability which is tied to the symmetric group $S_\infty$. Our key result is that braidability implies spreadability and thus conditional independence, according to the noncommutative extended de Finetti theorem (of C. Köstler). This endows the braid groups $B_n$ with a new intrinsic (quantum) probabilistic interpretation. We underline this interpretation by a braided extension of the Hewitt-Savage …
Vaughan Jones discovered unexpected connections between Richard Thompson's group and subfactor theory while attempting to construct conformal field theories (in short CFT). Among other this founded Jones' technology: a powerful new method for constructing actions of fraction groups which had numerous applications in mathematical physics, operator algebras, group theory and more surprisingly in knot theory and noncommutative probability theory. We propose and outline a program in the vein of Jones' work but where the Thompson group is replaced by a family of groups that we name forest-skein gro…
We provide an operator algebraic proof of a classical theorem of Thoma which characterizes the extremal characters of the infinite symmetric group $\mathbb{S}_\infty$. Our methods are based on noncommutative conditional independence emerging from exchangeability and we reinterpret Thoma's theorem as a noncommutative de Finetti type result. Our approach is, in parts, inspired by Jones' subfactor theory and by Okounkov's spectral proof of Thoma's theorem, and we link them by inferring spectral properties from certain commuting squares.
For certain generating sets of the subfactor pair $M\subset M\rtimes G$ where $G$ is a finite abelian group we prove an approximate inequality between their non-microstates free entropy dimension, resembling the Shreier formula for ranks of finite index subgroups of free groups. As an application, we give bounds on free entropy dimension of generating sets of crossed products of the form $M\rtimes(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{\oplus\infty}$ for a large class of algebras $M$.
In [10], Halmos proved an interesting result that the set of irreducible operators is dense in $\mathcal B(\mathcal H)$ in the sense of Hilbert-Schmidt approximation. In a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$ with separable predual, an operator $a\in \mathcal M$ is said to be {irreducible in} $\mathcal M$ if $W^*(a)$ is an irreducible subfactor of $\mathcal M$, i.e., $W^*(a)'\cap \mathcal M={\mathbb C} \cdot I$. In this paper, let $Φ(\cdot)$ be a $\Vert\cdot\Vert$-dominating, unitarily invariant norm (see Definition 2.1), where by $\Vert\cdot\Vert$ we denote the operator norm. We prove that in eve…
We prove several unique prime factorization results for tensor products of type II_1 factors coming from groups that can be realized either as subgroups of hyperbolic groups or as discrete subgroups of connected Lie groups of real rank 1. In particular, we show that if $R \otimes LF_{r_1} \otimes ... \otimes LF_{r_m}$ is isomorphic to a subfactor in $R \otimes LF_{s_1} \otimes >... \otimes LF_{s_n}$, for some $2\leq r_i, s_j \leq \infty$, then $m\le n$.
Motivated by Popa's seminal work \cite{Po04}, in this paper, we provide a fairly large class of examples of group actions $Γ\curvearrowright X$ satisfying the extended Neshveyev-Størmer rigidity phenomenon \cite{NS03}: whenever $Λ\curvearrowright Y$ is a free ergodic pmp action and there is a $\ast$-isomorphism $Θ:L^\infty(X)\rtimes Γ\rightarrow L^\infty(Y)\rtimes Λ$ such that $Θ(L(Γ))=L(Λ)$ then the actions $Γ\curvearrowright X$ and $Λ\curvearrowright Y$ are conjugate (in a way compatible with $Θ$). We also obtain a complete description of the intermediate subalgebras of all (possibly non-fre…
Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a free (unitary or orthogonal) quantum group. We prove that for any non-amenable subfactor $N\subset L^\infty(\mathbb{G})$, which is an image of a faithful normal conditional expectation, and for any $σ$-finite factor $B$, the tensor product $N \otimes B$ has no Cartan subalgebras. This generalizes our previous work that provides the same result when $B$ is finite. In the proof, we establish Ozawa--Popa and Popa--Vaes's weakly compact action on the continuous core of $N \otimes B$ as the one relative to B, by using an operator valued weight to B and the central weak amenabi…
We show a correspondence between simple continued fraction expansions of irrational numbers and irreducible permutative representations of the Cuntz algebra ${\cal O}_{\infty}$. With respect to the correspondence, it is shown that the equivalence of real numbers with respect to modular transformations is equivalent to the unitary equivalence of representations. Furthermore, we show that quadratic irrationals are related to irreducible permutative representations of ${\cal O}_{\infty}$ with a cycle.
For any finite dimensional C*-algebra A with any trace vector {\vec s} whose components are rational numbers, we give an endomorphism Φ of the hyperfinite II_1 factor R such that: forall k in {\mathbb N} Φ^k (R)' \cap R= \otimes^k A The canonical trace τ on R extends the trace vector {\vec s} on A. As a corollary, we construct a one-parameter family of inclusions of hyperfinite II_1 factors N^λ \subset M^λ with trivial relative commutant (N^λ)' \cap M^λ= {\mathbb C} and with the Jones index [M^λ: N^λ]= λ^{-1} \in (4, \infty) \cap {\mathbb Q} This partially solves the problem of finding all pos…
We prove that the normalizer of any diffuse amenable subalgebra of a free group factor $L(\Bbb F_r)$ generates an amenable von Neumann subalgebra. Moreover, any II$_1$ factor of the form $Q \vt L(\Bbb F_r) $, with $Q$ an arbitrary subfactor of a tensor product of free group factors, has no Cartan subalgebras. We also prove that if a free ergodic measure preserving action of a free group $\Bbb F_r$, $2\leq r \leq \infty$, on a probability space $(X,μ)$ is profinite then the group measure space factor $L^\infty(X)\rtimes \Bbb F_r$ has unique Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy.
We canonically associate to any planar algebra two type II_{\infty} factors M_{+} and M_{-}. The subfactors constructed previously by the authors in a previous paper are isomorphic to compressions of M_{+} and M_{-} to finite projections. We show that each \mathfrak{M}_{\pm} is isomorphic to an amalgamated free product of type I von Neumann algebras with amalgamation over a fixed discrete type I von Neumann subalgebra. In the finite-depth case, existing results in the literature imply that M_{+} \cong M_{-} is the amplification a free group factor on a finite number of generators. As an applic…
We show that a factor $M$ is full if and only if the $C^*$-algebra generated by its left and right regular representations contains the compact operators. We prove that the bicentralizer flow of a type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factor is always ergodic. As a consequence, for any type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factor $M$ and any $λ\in ]0,1]$, there exists an irreducible AFD type $\mathrm{III}_λ$ subfactor with expectation in $M$. Moreover, any type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factor $M$ which satisfies $M \cong M \otimes R_λ$ for some $λ\in ]0,1[$ has trivial bicentralizer. Finally, we give a counter-example to the charact…
Popa introduced the tensor category $\tildeχ(M)$ of approximately inner, centrally trivial bimodules of a $\rm{II}_{1}$ factor $M$, generalizing Connes' $χ(M)$. We extend Popa's notions to define the $\rm W^*$-tensor category $\operatorname{End}_{\rm loc}(\mathcal{C})$ of local endofunctors on a $\rm W^*$-category $\mathcal{C}$. We construct a unitary braiding on $\operatorname{End}_{\rm loc}(\mathcal{C})$, giving a new construction of a braided tensor category associated to an arbitrary $\rm W^*$-category. For the $\rm W^*$-category of finite modules over a $\rm{II}_{1}$ factor, this yields a…
