In his paper "Hodge integrals and degenerate contributions", Pandharipande studied the relationship between the enumerative geometry of certain 3-folds and the Gromov-Witten invariants. In some good cases, enumerative invariants (which are manifestly integers) can be expressed as a rational combination of Gromov-Witten invariants. Pandharipande speculated that the same combination of invariants should yield integers even when they do not have any enumerative significance on the 3-fold. In the case when the 3-fold is the product of a complex surface and an elliptic curve, Pandharipande has computed this combination of invariants on the 3-fold in terms of the Gromov-Witten invariants of the surface. This computation yields surprising conjectural predictions about the genus 0 and genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants of complex surfaces. The conjecture states that certain rational combinations of the genus 0 and genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants are always integers. Since the Gromov-Witten invariants for surfaces are often enumerative (as oppose to 3-folds), this conjecture can often also be interpreted as giving certain congruence relations among the various enumerative invariants of a surface.
In this note, we state Pandharipande's conjecture and we prove it for an infinite series of classes in the case of the projective plane blown-up at 9 points. In this case, we find generating functions for the numbers appearing in the conjecture in terms of quasi-modular forms. We then prove the integrality of the numbers by proving a certain a congruence property of modular forms that is reminiscent of Ramanujan's mod 5 congruences of the partition function.
We introduce a higher rank analog of the Pandharipande-Thomas theory of stable pairs on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$. More precisely, we develop a moduli theory for frozen triples given by the data $O^r(-n)\rightarrow F$ where $F$ is a sheaf of pure dimension 1. The moduli space of such objects does not naturally determine an enumerative theory: that is, it does not naturally possess a perfect symmetric obstruction theory. Instead, we build a zero-dimensional virtual fundamental class by hand, by truncating a deformation-obstruction theory coming from the moduli of objects in the derived categor…
In this note, we prove that the free energies F_g constructed from the Eynard-Orantin topological recursion applied to the curve mirror to C^3 reproduce the Faber-Pandharipande formula for genus g Gromov-Witten invariants of C^3. This completes the proof of the remodeling conjecture for C^3.
For an Abelian surface $A$ with a symplectic action by a finite group $G$, one can define the partition function for $G$-invariant Hilbert schemes \[Z_{A, G}(q) = \sum_{d=0}^{\infty} e(\text{Hilb}^{d}(A)^{G})q^{d}.\] We prove the reciprocal $Z_{A,G}^{-1}$ is a modular form of weight $\frac{1}{2}e(A/G)$ for the congruence subgroup $Γ_{0}(|G|)$, and give explicit expressions in terms of eta products. Refined formulas for the $χ_{y}$-genera of $\text{Hilb}(A)^{G}$ are also given. For the group generated by the standard involution $τ: A \to A$, our formulas arise from the enumerative geometry of t…
We establish the equality of classical and tropical curve counts for elliptic curves on toric surfaces with fixed $j$-invariant, refining results of Mikhalkin and Nishinou--Siebert. As an application, we determine a formula for such counts on $\mathbb P^2$ and all Hirzebruch surfaces. This formula relates the count of elliptic curves with the number of rational curves on the surface satisfying a small number of tangency conditions with the toric boundary. Furthermore, the combinatorial tropical multiplicities of Kerber and Markwig for counts in $\mathbb P^2$ are derived and explained algebro-g…
We prove that the inverse of a mirror map for a toric Calabi-Yau manifold of the form $K_Y$, where $Y$ is a compact toric Fano manifold, can be expressed in terms of generating functions of genus 0 open Gromov-Witten invariants defined by Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono \cite{FOOO10}. Such a relation between mirror maps and disk counting invariants was first conjectured by Gross and Siebert \cite[Conjecture 0.2 and Remark 5.1]{GS11} as part of their program, and was later formulated in terms of Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono's invariants in the toric Calabi-Yau case in \cite[Conjecture 1.1]{CLL12}.

Gromov-Witten theory is used to define an enumerative geometry of curves in Calabi-Yau 5-folds. We find recursions for meeting numbers of genus 0 curves, and we determine the contributions of moving multiple covers of genus 0 curves to the genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants. The resulting invariants, conjectured to be integral, are analogous to the previously defined BPS counts for Calabi-Yau 3 and 4-folds. We comment on the situation in higher dimensions where new issues arise. Two main examples are considered: the local Calabi-Yau P^2 with balanced normal bundle 3O(-1) and the compact Calabi-Y…
We transform the positive-genus real Gromov-Witten invariants of many real-orientable symplectic threefolds into signed counts of curves. These integer invariants provide lower bounds for counts of real curves of a given genus that pass through conjugate pairs of constraints. We conclude with some implications and related conjectures for one- and two-partition Hodge integrals.
Suppose that 2d-2 tangent lines to the rational normal curve z\mapsto (1 : z : ... : z^d) in d-dimensional complex projective space are given. It was known that the number of codimension 2 subspaces intersecting all these lines is always finite; for a generic configuration it is equal to the d^{th} Catalan number. We prove that for real tangent lines, all these codimension 2 subspaces are also real, thus confirming a special case of a general conjecture of B. and M. Shapiro. This is equivalent to the following result: If all critical points of a rational function lie on a circle in the Riemann…
In this paper, we introduce new enumerative invariants of curves on Calabi-Yau 3-folds via certain stable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves. We introduce the notion of limit stability on the category of perverse coherent sheaves, a subcategory in the derived category, and construct the moduli spaces of limit stable objects. We then define the counting invariants of limit stable objects using Behrend's constructible functions on that moduli spaces. It will turn out that our invariants are generalizations of counting invariants of stable pairs introduced by Pandharipande and Th…
We study the BPS invariants for local del Pezzo surfaces, which can be obtained as the signed Euler characteristic of the moduli spaces of stable one-dimensional sheaves on the surface $S$. We calculate the Poincare polynomials of the moduli spaces for the curve classes $β$ having arithmetic genus at most 2. We formulate a conjecture that these Poincare polynomials are divisible by the Poincare polynomials of $((-K_S).β-1)$-dimensional projective space. This conjecture motivates upcoming work on log BPS numbers.
We propose a new, conjectural recursion solution for Hurwitz numbers at all genera. This conjecture is based on recent progress in solving type B topological string theory on the mirrors of toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, which we briefly review to provide some background for our conjecture. We show in particular how this B-model solution, combined with mirror symmetry for the one-leg, framed topological vertex, leads to a recursion relation for Hodge integrals with three Hodge class insertions. Our conjecture in Hurwitz theory follows from this recursion for the framed vertex in the limit of infi…
We prove the conjecture of Marian-Oprea-Pandharipande on the Segre series associated to a rank zero class. Hence the rank zero Segre integrals on the Hilbert schemes of points for all surfaces are determined.
The enumerative geometry of r-th roots of line bundles is the subject of Witten's conjecture and occurs in the calculation of Gromov-Witten invariants of orbifolds. It requires the definition of the suitable compact moduli stack and the generalization of the standard techniques from the theory of moduli of stable curves. In math.AG/0603687, we construct a compact stack by describing the notion of stability in the context of twisted curves. In this paper, by working with stable twisted curves, we extend Mumford's formula for the Chern character of the Hodge bundle to the direct image of the uni…
Using a homotopy approach, we prove in this paper a conjecture of Maulik, Nekrasov, Okounkov and Pandharipande on the dimension zero Donaldson-Thomas invariants of all smooth complex threefolds.
Gromov-Witten theory is used to define an enumerative geometry of curves in Calabi-Yau 4-folds. The main technique is to find exact solutions to moving multiple cover integrals. The resulting invariants are analogous to the BPS counts of Gopakumar and Vafa for Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We conjecture the 4-fold invariants to be integers and expect a sheaf theoretic explanation. Several local Calabi-Yau 4-folds are solved exactly. Compact cases, including the sextic Calabi-Yau in CP5, are also studied. A complete solution of the Gromov-Witten theory of the sextic is conjecturally obtained by the holom…
An enumerative invariant theory in Algebraic Geometry, Differential Geometry, or Representation Theory, is the study of invariants which 'count' $τ$-(semi)stable objects $E$ with fixed topological invariants $[E]=α$ in some geometric problem, using a virtual class $[{\cal M}_α^{\rm ss}(τ)]_{\rm virt}$ in some homology theory for the moduli spaces ${\cal M}_α^{\rm st}(τ)\subseteq{\cal M}_α^{\rm ss}(τ)$ of $τ$-(semi)stable objects. Examples include Mochizuki's invariants counting coherent sheaves on surfaces, Donaldson-Thomas type invariants counting coherent sheaves on Calabi-Yau 3- and 4-folds…
We introduce a conjecture on Virasoro constraints for the moduli space of stable sheaves on a smooth projective surface. These generalise the Virasoro constraints on the Hilbert scheme of a surface found by Moreira (arXiv:2008.13746) and Moreira, Oblomkov, Okounkov and Pandharipande (arXiv:2008.12514). We verify the conjecture in many nontrivial cases by using a combinatorial description of equivariant sheaves found by Klyachko.
These are notes from my lectures on quantum K-theory of Nakajima quiver varieties and K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas theory of threefolds given at Columbia and Park City Mathematics Institute. They contain an introduction to the subject and a number of new results. In particular, we prove the main conjecture of arXiv:hep-th/0412021 and the conjecture of arXiv:1404.2323 in the simplest case of reduced smooth curves. We also prove the the absence of quantum corrections to the capped vertex with descendents for sufficiently large framing (and polarization), which is a property we call large framing…
For a nonsingular projective variety $X$, the virtual Tevelev degree in Gromov-Witten theory is defined as the virtual degree of the morphism from $M_{g,n}(X,d)$ to the product $M_{g,n} \times X^n$. After proving a simple formula for the virtual Tevelev degree in the (small) quantum cohomology ring of $X$ using the quantum Euler class, we provide several exact calculations for flag varieties and complete intersections. In the cominuscule case (including Grassmannians, Lagrangian Grassmannians, and maximal orthogonal Grassmannians), the virtual Tevelev degrees are calculated in terms of the eig…
We prove the conjectures of Yau-Zaslow and Gottsche concerning the number curves on K3 surfaces. Specifically, let X be a K3 surface and C be a holomorphic curve in X representing a primitive homology class. We count the number of curves of geometric genus g with n nodes passing through g generic points in X in the linear system |C| for any g and n satisfying C^2=2g+2n-2. When g=0, this coincides with the enumerative problem studied by Yau and Zaslow who obtained a conjectural generating function for the numbers. Recently, Gottsche has generalized their conjecture to arbitrary g in terms of qu…
We conjecture a formula for the generating function of genus one Gromov-Witten invariants of the local Calabi-Yau manifolds which are the total spaces of splitting bundles over projective spaces. We prove this conjecture in several special cases, and assuming the validity of our conjecture we check the integrality of genus one BPS numbers of local Calabi-Yau 5-folds defined by A. Klemm and R. Pandharipande.
The generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting one dimensional semistable sheaves on Calabi-Yau 3-folds are conjectured to satisfy a certain multiple cover formula. This conjecture is equivalent to Pandharipande-Thomas's strong rationality conjecture on the generating series of stable pair invariants, and its local version is enough to prove. In this paper, using Jacobian localizations and parabolic stable pair invariants introduced in the previous paper, we reduce the conjectural multiple cover formula for local curves with at worst nodal singularities to the case of local trees of smoo…
In this ``experimental'' research, we use known topological recursion relations in genera-zero, -one, and -two to compute the n-point descendant Gromov-Witten invariants of P^1 for arbitrary degrees and low values of n. The results are consistent with the Virasoro conjecture and also lead to explicit computations of all Hodge integrals in these genera. We also derive new recursion relations for simple Hurwitz numbers similar to those of Graber and Pandharipande.
We prove a conjecture of Maulik, Pandharipande, and Thomas expressing the Gromov--Witten invariants of K3 surfaces for divisibility two curve classes in all genus in terms of weakly holomorphic quasimodular forms of level two. Then, we establish the holomorphic anomaly equation in divisibility two in all genus. Our approach involves a refined boundary induction, relying on the top tautological group of the moduli space of smooth curves, together with a degeneration formula for reduced virtual fundamental class with imprimitive curve classes. We use the double ramification relations with target…
The notion of limit stability on Calabi-Yau 3-folds is introduced by the author to construct an approximation of Bridgeland-Douglas stability conditions at the large volume limit. It has also turned out that the wall-crossing phenomena of limit stable objects seem relevant to the rationality conjecture of the generating functions of Pandharipande-Thomas invariants. In this article, we shall make it clear how wall-crossing formula of the counting invariants of limit stable objects solves the above conjecture.
In math.AG/0207233, Okounkov and Pandharipande gave an operator formalism for computing the equivariant Gromov-Witten theory of the projective line. This thesis extends their result to orbifold lines. In the effective case the theory is again governed by the 2-Toda hierarchy. In the ineffective case the decomposition conjecture of hep-th/0606034 is verified.
Boris Shapiro and Michael Shapiro have a conjecture concerning the Schubert calculus and real enumerative geometry and which would give infinitely many families of zero-dimensional systems of real polynomials (including families of overdetermined systems)--all of whose solutions are real. It has connections to the pole placement problem in linear systems theory and to totally positive matrices. We give compelling computational evidence for its validity, prove it for infinitely many families of enumerative problems, show how a simple version implies more general versions, and present a countere…
Fix a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ satisfying the Bogomolov-Gieseker conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda, such as the quintic 3-fold. By two different wall-crossing arguments we prove two different explicit formulae relating rank 0 Donaldson-Thomas invariants (counting torsion sheaves on $X$ supported on ample divisors) in terms of rank 1 Donaldson-Thomas invariants (counting ideal sheaves of curves) and Pandharipande-Thomas invariants. In particular, we prove a slight modification of Toda's formulation of OSV conjecture for $X$. When $X$ is of Picard rank one, we also give an explicit formula for rank tw…
We study a conjectural relationship among Donaldson-Thomas type invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds counting torsion sheaves supported on ample divisors, ideal sheaves of curves and Pandharipande-Thomas's stable pairs. The conjecture is a mathematical formulation of Denef-Moore's formula derived in the study of Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa's conjecture relating black hole entropy and topological string. The main result of this paper is to prove our conjecture assuming a conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality proposed by Bayer, Macri and the author.
We formulate a conjecture predicting unexpected relationships among the coefficients of the elliptic expansions of Klein's modular j-function around j = 0 and j = 1728. Our conjecture is inspired by recent developments in mirror symmetry, in particular by work of Tu computing categorical enumerative invariants of matrix factorization categories and by work of Li-Shen-Zhou computing FJRW invariants of elliptic curves.
In analogy with the Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) conjecture on Calabi-Yau (CY) 3-folds, Klemm and Pandharipande defined GV type invariants on Calabi-Yau 4-folds using Gromov-Witten theory and conjectured their integrality. In a joint work with Maulik and Toda, the author conjectured their genus zero invariants are $\mathrm{DT_4}$ invariants of one dimensional stable sheaves. In this paper, we study this conjecture on the total space of canonical bundle of a Fano 3-fold $Y$, which reduces to a relation between twisted GW and $\mathrm{DT_3}$ invariants on $Y$. Examples are computed for both compact and n…
We study the cycle-valued reduced Gromov-Witten theory of a nonsingular projective K3 surface. For primitive curve classes, we prove that the correspondence induced by the reduced virtual fundamental class respects the tautological rings. Our proof uses monodromy over the moduli space of K3 surfaces, degeneration formulae and virtual localization. As a consequence of the monodromy argument, we verify an invariance property for Gromov-Witten invariants of K3 surfaces in primitive curve class conjectured by Oberdieck-Pandharipande.
The purpose of the article is to give a proof of a conjecture of Maulik and Pandharipande for genus 2 and 3. As a result, it gives a way to determine Gromov-Witten invariants of the quintic threefold for genus 2 and 3.
The purpose of this paper is twofold: first we give a survey on the recent developments of curve counting invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds, e.g. Gromov-Witten theory, Donaldson-Thomas theory and Pandharipande-Thomas theory. Next we focus on the proof of the rationality conjecture of the generating series of PT invariants, and discuss its conjectural Gopakumar-Vafa form.
As an analogy to Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture on CY 3-folds, Klemm-Pandharipande defined GV type invariants on CY 4-folds using GW theory and conjectured their integrality. In this paper, we define stable pair type invariants on CY 4-folds and use them to interpret these GV type invariants. Examples are computed for both compact and non-compact CY 4-folds to support our conjectures.
In analogy with the Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture on CY 3-folds, Klemm and Pandharipande defined GV type invariants on Calabi-Yau 4-folds using Gromov-Witten theory and conjectured their integrality. In this paper, we propose a sheaf-theoretic interpretation of their genus zero invariants using Donaldson-Thomas theory on CY 4-folds. More specifically, we conjecture genus zero GV type invariants are $\mathrm{DT_{4}}$ invariants for one-dimensional stable sheaves on CY 4-folds. Some examples are computed for both compact and non-compact CY 4-folds to support our conjectures. We also propose an equiv…
We develop a theory of Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants for a Calabi-Yau threefold (CY3) $X$ which is equipped with an involution $\imath$ preserving the holomorphic volume form. We define integers $n_{g,h}(β) $ which give a virtual count of the number of genus $g$ curves $C$ on $X$, in the class $β\in H_{2}(X)$, which are invariant under $\imath$, and whose quotient $C/\imath$ has genus $h$. We give two definitions of $n_{g,h}(β) $ which we conjecture to be equivalent: one in terms of a version of Pandharipande-Thomas theory and one in terms of a version of Maulik-Toda theory. We compute our in…
Let $S$ be a K3 surface and let $E$ be an elliptic curve. We solve the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of the Calabi-Yau threefold $S \times E$ for all curve classes which are primitive in the K3 factor. In particular, we deduce the Igusa cusp form conjecture. The proof relies on new results in the Gromov-Witten theory of elliptic curves and K3 surfaces. We show the generating series of Gromov-Witten classes of an elliptic curve are cycle-valued quasimodular forms and satisfy a holomorphic anomaly equation. The quasimodularity generalizes a result by Okounkov and Pandharipande, and the holomorphi…
We introduce marked relative Pandharipande-Thomas (PT) invariants for a pair $(X,D)$ of a smooth projective threefold and a smooth divisor. These invariants are defined by integration over the moduli space of $r$-marked stable pairs on $(X,D)$, and appear naturally when degenerating diagonal insertions via the Li-Wu degeneration formula. We propose a Gromov-Witten (GW) / PT correspondence for marked relative invariants. We show compatibility of the conjecture with the degeneration formula and a splitting formula for relative diagonals. The results provide new tools to prove GW/PT correspondenc…
