Triple linking numbers were defined for 3-component oriented surface-links in 4-space using signed triple points on projections in 3-space. In this paper we give an algebraic formulation using intersections of homology classes (or cup products on cohomology groups). We prove that spherical links have trivial triple linking numbers and that triple linking numbers are link homology invariants.
In the 1950's Milnor defined a family of higher order invariants generalizing the linking number. Even the first of these new invariants, the triple linking number, has received and fruitful study since its inception. In the case that $L$ has vanishing pairwise linking numbers, this triple linking number gives an integer valued invariant. When the linking numbers fail to vanish, this invariant is only well-defined modulo their greatest common divisor. In recent work Davis-Nagel-Orson-Powell produce a single invariant called the total triple linking number refining the triple linking number and…
The triple linking number of an oriented surface link was defined as an analogical notion of the linking number of a classical link. We consider a certain $m$-component $T^2$-link ($m \geq 3$) determined from two commutative pure $m$-braids $a$ and $b$. We present the triple linking number of such a $T^2$-link, by using the linking numbers of the closures of $a$ and $b$. This gives a lower bound of the triple point number. In some cases, we can determine the triple point numbers, each of which is a multiple of four.
Milnor's triple linking numbers of a link in the 3-sphere are interpreted geometrically in terms of the pattern of intersections of the Seifert surfaces of the components of the link. This generalizes the well known formula as an algebraic count of triple points when the pairwise linking numbers vanish.
In this paper, we introduce two functions such that the subtraction corresponds to the Milnor's triple linking number; the addition obtains a new integer-valued link homotopy invariant of $3$-component links. We also have found a series of integer-valued invariants derived from four terms whose sum equals the Milnor's triple linking number. We apply this structure to give invariants of $3$-bouquet graphs.
Topological polymers have various topological types, and they are expressed by graphs. However, the Jones polynomial, we have a difficulty to compute it; computational time is growing exponentially with respect to the crossing number. The simplest Vassiliev invariant is the linking number and thus we will seek a next simple one is as the Milnor's triple linking number. In this paper, we introduce simple Gauss diagram formulas of Vassiliev invariants of Milnor type. These are non-torsion valued, whereas the base-point-free Milnor's triple linking number is usually torsion-valued.
We establish some new relationships between Milnor invariants and Heegaard Floer homology. This includes a formula for the Milnor triple linking number from the link Floer complex, detection results for the Whitehead link and Borromean rings, and a structural property of the $d$-invariants of surgeries on certain algebraically split links.
We give a refined value group for the collection of triple linking numbers of links in the 3-sphere. Given two links with the same pairwise linking numbers we show that they have the same refined triple linking number collection if and only if the links admit homeomorphic surface systems. Moreover these two conditions hold if and only if the link exteriors are bordant over $B \mathbb{Z}^n$, and if and only if the third lower central series quotients $π/π_3$ of the link groups are isomorphic preserving meridians and longitudes. We also show that these conditions imply that the link groups have …
A derivative of an algebraically slice knot $K$ is an oriented link disjointly embedded in a Seifert surface of $K$ such that its homology class forms a basis for a metabolizer $H$ of $K$. We show that for a genus three algebraically slice knot $K$, the set $\{ \barμ_{\{γ_1,γ_2,γ_3\}}(123) - \barμ_{\{γ'_1,γ'_2,γ'_3\}}(123)| \{γ_1,γ_2,γ_3\}$ and $\{γ'_1,γ'_2,γ'_3\}$ are derivatives of $K$ associated with a metabolizer $H\}$ contains $n\cdot \mathbb{Z}$ where $n$ is determined by a Seifert form of $K$ and a metabolizer $H$. As a corollary, we show that it is possible to realize any integer as a …
We give a simple axiomatic definition of a rational-valued invariant s(W,V,e) of triples (W,V,e), where W is a (smooth, oriented, closed) 6-manifold and V is a 3-submanifold of W, and where e is a second rational cohomology class of the complement of V satisfying a certain condition. The definition is stated in terms of cobordisms of such triples and the signature of 4-manifolds. When W = S^6 and V is a smoothly embedded 3-sphere, and when e/2 is the Poincare dual of a Seifert surface of V, the invariant coincides with -8 times Haefliger's embedding invariant of (S^6,V). Our definition recover…
Two triples of triangles having pairwise disjoint outlines in 3-space are called combinatorially isotopic if one triple can be obtained from the other by a continuous motion during which the outlines of the triangles remain pairwise disjoint. We conjecture that it can be algorithmically checked if an (ordered or unordered) triple of triangles is combinatorially isotopic to a triple of triangles having pairwise disjoint convex hulls. We also conjecture that any unordered triple of pairwise disjoint triangles in 3-space belongs to one of the 5 types of such triples listed in the paper. We presen…
To each three-component link in the 3-sphere, we associate a geometrically natural characteristic map from the 3-torus to the 2-sphere, and show that the pairwise linking numbers and Milnor triple linking number that classify the link up to link homotopy correspond to the Pontryagin invariants that classify its characteristic map up to homotopy. This can be viewed as a natural extension of the familiar fact that the linking number of a two-component link in 3-space is the degree of its associated Gauss map from the 2-torus to the 2-sphere. When the pairwise linking numbers are all zero, we giv…
Bott and Taubes constructed knot invariants by integrating differential forms along the fiber of a bundle over the space of knots, generalizing the Gauss linking integral. Their techniques were later used to construct real cohomology classes in spaces of knots and links in higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces. In previous work, we constructed cohomology classes in knot spaces with arbitrary coefficients by integrating via a Pontrjagin--Thom construction. We carry out a similar construction over the space of string links, but with a refinement in which configuration spaces are glued together acc…
Three-component links in the 3-dimensional sphere were classified up to link homotopy by John Milnor in his senior thesis, published in 1954. A complete set of invariants is given by the pairwise linking numbers p, q and r of the components, and by the residue class of one further integer mu, the "triple linking number" of the title, which is well-defined modulo the greatest common divisor of p, q and r. To each such link L we associate a geometrically natural characteristic map g_L from the 3-torus to the 2-sphere in such a way that link homotopies of L become homotopies of g_L. Maps of the 3…
An explicit polynomial in the linking numbers $l_{ij}$ and Milnor's triple linking numbers $μ(rst)$ on six component links is shown to be a well-defined finite type link-homotopy invariant. This solves a problem raised by B. Mellor and D. Thurston. An extension of our construction also produces a finite type link invariant which detects the invertibility for some links.
Any two knots admit orientation preserving homeomorphic Seifert surfaces, as can be seen by stabilizing. There is a generalization of a Seifert surface to the setting of links called a C-complex. In this paper, we ask when two links will admit orientation preserving homeomorphic C-complexes. In the case of 2-component links, we find that the pairwise linking number provides a complete obstruction. In the case of links with 3 or more components and zero pairwise linking number, Milnor's triple linking number provides a complete obstruction.
It is known that every oriented integral homology 3-sphere can be obtained from S^3 by a finite sequence of Borromean surgeries. We give an explicit formula for the variation of the Casson invariant under such a surgery move. The formula involves simple classical invariants, namely the framing, linking number and Milnor's triple linking number. A more general statement, for n independent Borromean surgeries, is also provided, which involves an additional cubic expression in some linking numbers of the surgery link.
In 1986, Matveev defined the notion of Borromean surgery for closed oriented 3-manifolds and showed that the equivalence relation generated by this move is characterized by the pair (first betti number, linking form up to isomorphism). We explain how this extends for 3-manifolds with spin structure if we replace the linking form by the quadratic form defined by the spin structure. We then show that the equivalence relation among closed spin 3-manifolds generated by spin Borromean surgeries is characterized by the triple (first betti number, linking form up to isomorphism, Rochlin invariant mod…
Laundry surfaces for closed braid diagrams are presented. It is shown that braid diagrams are characterized by linking matrices obtained by lifting cycles from these surfaces. Oriented link types are then characterized by equivalence classes of linking matrices. Similar equivalence classes can be composed of Gordon and Litherland forms or Seifert matrices.
We show that the Casson knot invariant, linking number and Milnor's triple linking number, together with a certain 2-string link invariant $V_2$, are necessary and sufficient to express any string link Vassiliev invariant of order two. Explicit combinatorial formulas are given for these invariants. This result is applied to the theory of claspers for string links.
We construct a Seifert surface for a given null-homologous transverse link in a contact manifold that is compatible with a planar open book decomposition, then obtain a formula of the self-linking number. It extends Bennequin's self-linking number formula for braids in the standard contact 3-sphere.
The group of bordism classes of unoriented surfaces in 4-space is determined. The bordism classes are characterized by normal Euler numbers, double linking numbers, and triple linking numbers.
Yoshikawa made a table of knotted surfaces in R^4 with ch-index 10 or less. This remarkable table is the first to enumerate knotted surfaces analogous to the classical prime knot table. A broken sheet diagram of a surface-link is a generic projection of the surface in R^3 with crossing information along its singular set. The minimal number of triple points among all broken sheet diagrams representing a given surface-knot is its triple point number. This paper compiles the known triple point numbers of the surface-links represented in Yoshikawa's table and calculates or provides bounds on the t…
We define a notion of finite type invariants for links with a fixed linking matrix. We show that Milnor's triple link homotopy invariant is a finite type invariant, of type 1, in this sense. We also generalize the approach to Milnor's higher order homotopy invariants and show that they are also, in a sense, of finite type. Finally, we compare our approach to another approach for defining finite type invariants within linking classes.
Analogous to a classical knot diagram, a surface-link can be generically projected to 3-space and given crossing information to create a broken sheet diagram. The triple point number of a surface-link is the minimal number of triple points among all broken sheet diagrams that lift to that surface-link. This paper generalizes a family of Oshiro to show that there are non-split surface-links of arbitrarily many trivial components whose triple point number can be made arbitrarily large.
In his Ph.D. thesis, Cadegan-Schlieper constructs an invariant of the embedded topology of a line arrangement which generalizes the $\mathcal{I}$-invariant introduced by Artal, Florens and the author. This new invariant is called the loop linking number in the present paper. We refine the result of Cadegan-Schlieper by proving that the loop linking number is an invariant of the homeomorphism type of the arrangement complement. We give two effective methods to compute this invariant, both are based on the braid monodromy. As an application, we detect an arithmetic Zariski pair of arrangements w…
The singularity set of a generic standard projection to the three space of a closed surface linked in four space, consists of at most three types: double points, triple points or branch points. We say that this generic projection image is p-diagram if it does not contain any triple point. Two p-diagrams of equivalent surface links are called p-equivalent if there exists a finite sequence of local moves, such that each of them is one of the four moves taken from the seven on the well known Roseman list, that connects only p-diagrams. It is natural to ask: are any of two p-diagrams of equivalent…
A flat plumbing basket is a surface consisting a disk and finitely many bands which are contained in distinct pages of the trivial open book decomposition of $\mathbf{S}^{3}$. In this paper, we construct a Legendrian link from a flat plumbing basket, and we describe a relation among the self-linking number, the Thurston-Bennequin number and the flat plumbing basket number of the link. As a corollary, we determine the flat plumbing basket numbers of torus links.
A generalised Thurston-Bennequin invariant for a Q-singularity of a real algebraic variety is defined as a linking form on the homologies of the real link of the singularity. The main goal of this paper is to present a method to calculate the linking form in terms of the very good resolution graph of a real normal unibranch surface singularity. For such singularities, the value of the linking form is the Thurston-Bennequin number of the real link of the singularity. As a special case of unibranch surface singularities, the behaviour of the linking form is investigated on the Brieskorn double p…
We describe a new approach to triple linking invariants and integrals, aiming for a simpler, wider and more natural applicability to the search for higher order helicities of fluid flows and magnetic fields. To each three-component link in Euclidean 3-space, we associate a geometrically natural generalized Gauss map from the 3-torus to the 2-sphere, and show that the pairwise linking numbers and Milnor triple linking number that classify the link up to link homotopy correspond to the Pontryagin invariants that classify its generalized Gauss map up to homotopy. This can be viewed as a natural e…
Roseman moves are seven types of local modification for surface-link diagrams in $3$-space which generate ambient isotopies of surface-links in $4$-space. In this paper, we focus on Roseman moves involving triple points, one of which is the famous tetrahedral move, and discuss their independence. For each diagram of any surface-link, we construct a new diagram of the same surface-link such that any sequence of Roseman moves between them must contain moves involving triple points (and the numbers of triple points of the two diagrams are the same). Moreover, we can find a pair of two diagrams of…
It is known that any surface knot can be transformed to an unknotted surface knot or a surface knot which has a diagram with no triple points by a finite number of 1-handle additions. The minimum number of such 1-handles is called the unknotting number or the triple point cancelling number, respectively. In this paper, we give upper bounds and lower bounds of unknotting numbers and triple point cancelling numbers of torus-covering knots, which are surface knots in the form of coverings over the standard torus $T$. Upper bounds are given by using $m$-charts on $T$ presenting torus-covering knot…
In the 1980's Daryl Cooper introduced the notion of a C-complex (or clasp-complex) bounded by a link and explained how to compute signatures and polynomial invariants using a C-complex. Since then this was extended by works of Cimasoni, Florens, Mellor, Melvin, Conway, Toffoli, Friedl, and others to compute other link invariants. Informally a C-complex is a union of surfaces which are allowed to intersect each other in clasps. The purpose of the current paper is to study the minimal number of clasps amongst all C-complexes bounded by a fixed link $L$. This measure of complexity is related to t…
Relative self-linking and linking "numbers" for pairs of knots in oriented 3-manifolds are defined in terms of intersection invariants of immersed surfaces in 4-manifolds. The resulting concordance invariants generalize the usual homological notion of linking by taking into account the fundamental group of the ambient manifold and often map onto infinitely generated groups. The knot invariants generalize the cyclic (type 1) invariants of Kirk and Livingston and when taken with respect to certain preferred knots, called spherical knots, relative self-linking numbers are characterized geometrica…
A formula that relates triple points, branch points, and their distances from infinity is presented. We recover trivial normal Euler classes for oriented surfaces, and formulas on signed triple points.
It is known that there is no 2-knot with triple point number two. The present work shows that there is no surface-knot of genus one with triple point number two. In order to prove the result, we use Roseman moves and the algebraic intersection number of simple closed curves in the double decker set.
Quandles with involutions that satisfy certain conditions, called good involutions, can be used to color non-orientable surface-knots. We use subgroups of signed permutation matrices to construct non-trivial good involutions on extensions of odd order dihedral quandles. For the smallest example of order 6 that is an extension of the three-element dihedral quandle, various symmetric quandle homology groups are computed, and applications to the minimal triple point number of surface-knots are given.
By using a suitable triple cover we show how to possibly model the construction of a minimal surface with positive genus spanning all six edges of a tetrahedron, working in the space of BV functions and interpreting the film as the boundary of a Caccioppoli set in the covering space. After a question raised by R. Hardt in the late 1980's, it seems common opinion that an area-minimizing surface of this sort does not exist for a regular tetrahedron, although a proof of this fact is still missing. In this paper we show that there exists a surface of positive genus spanning the boundary of an elon…
We explain a correspondence between some invariants in the dynamics of color exchange in a 2d coloring problem, which are polynomials of winding numbers, and linking numbers in 3d. One invariant is visualized as linking of lines on a special surface with Arf-Kervaire invariant one, and is interpreted as resulting from an obstruction to transform the surface into its chiral image with special continuous deformations. We also consider additional constraints on the dynamics and see how the surface is modified.
