Given a family of complex affine planes, we show that it is trivial over a Zariski open subset of the base. The proof relies upon a relative version of the contraction theorem.
We construct families of smooth affine surfaces with pairwise non isomorphic A 1-cylinders but whose A 2-cylinders are all isomorphic. These arise as complements of cuspidal hyperplane sections of smooth projective cubic surfaces.
A classical result of Miyanishi-Sugie and Keel-McKernan asserts that for smooth affine surfaces, affine-uniruledness is equivalent to affine-ruledness, both properties being in fact equivalent to the negativity of the logarithmic Kodaira dimension. Here we show in contrast that starting from dimension three, there exists smooth affine varieties which are affine-uniruled but not affine-ruled.
For an affine variety $S$ we consider the ring $AK(S),$ which is the intersection of the rings of constants of all locally-nilpotent derivations of the ring $\Cal {O}(S).$ We show that $AK(S\times\Bbb {C}^n)=AK(S)$ for a smooth affine surface $S$ with $H^2(S,\Bbb {Z})=\{0\}.$
We show that the generic fiber of a family of smooth $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-ruled affine surfaces always carries an $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-fibration, possibly after a finite extension of the base. In the particular case where the general fibers of the family are irrational surfaces, we establish that up to shrinking the base, such a family actually factors through an $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-fibration over a certain scheme, induced by the MRC-fibration of a relative smooth projective model of the family. For affine threefolds fibered by irrational $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-ruled surfaces, this induced $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-fib…
We give a general structure theorem for affine A 1-fibrations on smooth quasi-projective surfaces. As an application, we show that every smooth A 1-fibered affine surface non-isomorphic to the total space of a line bundle over a smooth affine curve fails the Zariski Cancellation Problem. The present note is an expanded version of a talk given at the Kinosaki Algebraic Geometry Symposium in October 2019.
A well-known cancellation problem asks when, for two algebraic varieties $V_1, V_2 \subseteq {\bf C}^n$, the isomorphism of the cylinders $V_1 \times {\bf C}$ and $V_2 \times {\bf C}$ implies the isomorphism of $V_1$ and $V_2$. In this paper, we address a related problem: when the equivalence (under an automorphism of ${\bf C}^{n+1}$) of two cylinders $V_1 \times {\bf C}$ and $V_2 \times {\bf C}$ implies the equivalence of their bases $V_1$ and $V_2$ under an automorphism of ${\bf C}^n$? We concentrate here on hypersurfaces and show that this problem establishes a strong connection between the…
A special Danielewski surface is an affine surface which is the total space of a principal $(\mathbb{C},+)$-bundle over an affine line with a multiple origin. Using a fiber product trick introduced by Danielewski, it is known that cylinders over two such surfaces are always isomorphic provided that both bases have the same number of origins. The goal of this note is to give an explicit method to find isomorphisms between cylinders over special Danielewski surfaces. The method is based on the construction of appropriate locally nilpotent derivations.
We describe a method to construct hypersurfaces of the complex affine $n$-space with isomorphic $\mathbb{C}^*$-cylinders. Among these hypersurfaces, we find new explicit counterexamples to the Laurent Cancellation Problem, i.e. hypersurfaces that are non isomorphic, although their $\mathbb{C}^*$-cylinders are isomorphic as abstract algebraic varieties. We also provide examples of non isomorphic varieties $X$ and $Y$ with isomorphic cartesian squares $X\times X$ and $Y\times Y$.
We construct algebraic families of exotic affine 3-spheres, that is, smooth affine threefolds diffeomorphic to a non-degenerate smooth complex affine quadric of dimension 3 but non algebraically isomorphic to it. We show in particular that for every smooth topologically contractible affine surface S with trivial automorphism group, there exists a canonical smooth family of pairwise non isomorphic exotic affine 3-spheres parametrized by the closed points of S.
We show that the Makar-Limanov invariant of the cylinder over the Koras-Russell cubic affine threefold is trivial. This means that regular functions which are invariant under all algebraic actions of the additive group on this variety are constants.
We address the following question: When an affine cone over a smooth Fano threefold admits an effective action of the additive group? In this paper we deal with Fano threefolds of index 1 and Picard number 1. Our approach is based on a geometric criterion from our previous paper, which relates the existence of an additive group action on the cone over a smooth projective variety X with the existence of an open polar cylinder in X. Non-trivial families of Fano threefolds carrying a cylinder were found in loc. cit. Here we provide new such examples.
In this paper we show that an affine space is determined by the abstract group structure of its group of regular automorphisms in the category of connected affine varieties. To prove this we study commutative subgroups of the group of automorphisms of affine varieties.
We provide families of affine threefolds which are contractible in the unstable $\mathbb A^1$-homotopy category of Morel-Voevodsky and pairwise non-isomorphic, thus answering a question of A. Asok and B. Doran. As a particular case, we show that the Koras-Russell threefolds of the first kind are contractible, extending results of M. Hoyois, A. Krishna and P. A. Ostvaer.
We give families of examples of principal open subsets of the affine space \mathbb{A}^{3} which do not have the cancellation property. We show as a by-product that the cylinders over Koras-Russell threefolds of the first kind have a trivial Makar-Limanov invariant.
The main result of this article is to construct infinite families of non-equivalent equivariant real forms of linear C*-actions on affine four-space. We consider the real form of C* whose fixed point is a circle. In [F-MJ] one example of a non-linearizable circle action was constructed. Here, this result is generalized by developing a new approach which allows us to compare different real forms. The constructions of these forms are based on the structure of equivariant O2(C)-vector bundles.
We construct a smooth rational affine surface S with finite automorphism group but with the property that the group of automorphisms of the cylinder SxA^2 acts infinitely transitively on the complement of a closed subset of codimension at least two. Such a surface S is in particular rigid but not stably rigid with respect to the Makar-Limanov invariant.
In this article, we give the classification of normal del Pezzo surfaces of rank one with at most log canonical singularities containing the affine plane defined over an algebraically non-closed field of characteristic zero. As an application, we have a criterion for del Pezzo fibrations with canonical singularities whose generic fibers are not smooth to contain vertical $\mathbb{A}^2$-cylinders.
Let $X$ and $X'$ be affine algebraic varieties over a field $\mathbb{k}$. The celebrated Zariski Cancellation Problem asks as to when the existence of an isomorphism $X\times\mathbb{A}^n\cong X'\times\mathbb{A}^n$ implies $X\cong X'$. In Part I of this paper (arXiv:1610.01805) we provided a criterion for cancellation in the case where $X$ is a normal affine surface admitting an $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibration $X\to B$ over a smooth affine curve $B$. If $X$ does not admit such an $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibration then the cancellation by the affine line is known to hold for $X$ by a result of Bandman and Makar…
Let X be an irreducible affine T-variety. We consider families of affine stable toric T-varieties over X and give a description of the corresponding moduli space as the quotient stack of an open subscheme in a certain toric Hilbert scheme under the action of a torus.
We provide explicit families of tame automorphisms of the complex affine three-space which degenerate to wild automorphisms. This shows that the tame subgroup of the group of polynomial automorphisms of $\C^3$ is not closed, when the latter is seen as an infinite dimensional algebraic group.tomorphism group of affine three-space
Let $G$ be a reductive group. We prove that a family of polynomial actions of $G$ on $\mathbb{C}^2$, holomorphically parametrized by an open Riemann surface, is linearizable. As an application, we show that a particular class of reductive group actions on $\mathbb{C}^3$ is linearizable. The main step of our proof is to establish a certain restrictive Oka property for groups of equivariant algebraic automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^2$.
Every $\mathbb{A}^{1}-$bundle over the complex affine plane punctured at the origin, is trivial in the differentiable category but there are infinitely many distinct isomorphy classes of algebraic bundles. Isomorphy types of total spaces of such algebraic bundles are considered; in particular, the complex affine 3-sphere admitts such a structure with an additional homogeneity property. Total spaces of nontrivial homogeneous $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-bundles over the punctured plane are classified up to $\mathbb{G}_{m}$-equivariant algebraic isomorphism and a criterion for nonisomorphy is given. In fact…
We introduce two families of symmetric functions with an extra parameter t that specialize to Schubert representatives for cohomology and homology of the affine Grassmannian when t = 1. The families are defined by a statistic on combinatorial objects associated to the type-A affine Weyl group and their transition matrix with Hall-Littlewood polynomials is t-positive. We conjecture that one family is the set of k-atoms.
Let $I$ be an ideal of the polynomial ring $A[x]=A[x_1,...,x_n]$ over the commutative, noetherian ring $A$. Geometrically $I$ defines a family of affine schemes over $\Spec(A)$: For $\p\in\Spec(A)$, the fibre over $\p$ is the closed subscheme of affine space over the residue field $k(\p)$, which is determined by the extension of $I$ under the canonical map $σ_\p:A[x]\to k(\p)[x]$. If $I$ is homogeneous there is an analogous projective setting, but again the ideal defining the fibre is $\sigI$. For a chosen term order this ideal has a unique reduced Gröbner basis which is known to contain consi…
We prove that the closure (for the Zariski topology) of the set of polynomial automorphisms of the complex affine plane whose polydegree is (cd-1,b,a) contains all triangular automorphisms of degree cd+a, where a,b >1 and c>0 are integers and d=ab-1. When b=2, this result gives a family of counterexamples to a conjecture of Furter.
We consider fibrations by affine lines on smooth affine surfaces obtained as complements of smooth rational curves $B$ in smooth projective surfaces $X$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We observe that except for two exceptions, these surfaces $X \setminus B$ admit infinitely many families of $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibrations over the projective line with irreducible fibers and a unique singular fiber of arbitrarily large multiplicity. For $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibrations over the affine line, we give a new and essentially self-contained proof that the set of equivalence cla…
Let G be a complex connected reductive group. I. Losev has shown that a smooth affine spherical G-variety X is uniquely determined by its weight monoid, which is the set of irreducible representations of G that occur in the coordinate ring of X. In this paper we use a combinatorial characterization of the weight monoids of smooth affine spherical varieties to classify: (a) all such varieties when G is $\mathrm{SL}(2) \times \mathbb{C}^{\times}$ and (b) all such varieties for G simple which have a G-saturated weight monoid of full rank. We also use the characterization and F. Knop's classificat…
We classify all functions satisfying non-trivial families of PVI equations. It turns out that, up to an Okamoto equivalence, there are exactly four families parameterized by affine planes or lines. Each affine space is generated by points of "geometric origin", associated either to deformations of elliptic surfaces with four singular fibers, or to deformations of three-sheeted covers of the projective line with branching locus consisting of four points.
We prove a "Generic Equivalence Theorem which says that two affine morphisms $p: S \to Y$ and $q: T \to Y$ of varieties with isomorphic (closed) fibers become isomorphic under a dominant etale base change $ϕ: U \to Y$. A special case is the following result. Call a morphism $ϕ: X \to Y$ a "fibration with fiber $F$" if $ϕ$ is flat and all fibers are (reduced and) isomorphic to $F$. Then an affine fibration with fiber $F$ admits an etale dominant morphism $μ: U \to Y$ such that the pull-back is a trivial fiber bundle: $U\times_Y X \simeq U\times F$. As an application we give short proofs of the …
We apply down operators in the affine nilCoxeter algebra to yield explicit combinatorial expansions for certain families of non-commutative k-Schur functions. This yields a combinatorial interpretation for a new family of k-Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
For affine toric varieties, the vector space T1 (containing the infinitesimal deformations) will be interpreted via Minkowski summands of cross cuts of the defining polyhedral cone. This result will be applied to study the deformation theory of (in particular non-isolated) three-dimensional Gorenstein singularities.
We discuss a conjecture saying that derived equivalence of simply connected smooth projective varieties implies that the difference of their classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is annihilated by a power of the affine line class. We support the conjecture with a number of known examples, and one new example. We consider a smooth complete intersection $X$ of three quadrics in ${\mathbf P}^5$ and the corresponding double cover $Y \to {\mathbf P}^2$ branched over a sextic curve. We show that as soon as the natural Brauer class on $Y$ vanishes, so that $X$ and $Y$ are derived equivalent, …
We show that compactly generated t-structures in the derived category of a commutative ring $R$ are in a bijection with certain families of compactly generated t-structures over the local rings $R_\mathfrak{m}$ where $\mathfrak{m}$ runs through the maximal ideals in the Zariski spectrum $\mathrm{Spec}(R)$. The families are precisely those satisfying a gluing condition for the associated sequence of Thomason subsets of $\mathrm{Spec}(R)$. As one application, we show that the compact generation of a homotopically smashing t-structure can be checked locally over localizations at maximal ideals. I…
Let $c_1, c_2, c_3$ be distinct complex numbers, and let $d\ge 3$ be an integer. We show that the set of all pairs $(a,b)\in \mathbb{C}\times \mathbb{C}$ such that each $c_i$ is preperiodic for the action of the polynomial $x^d+ax+b$ is not Zariski dense in the affine plane.
The total curvature of complex hypersurfaces in $\bC^{n+1}$ and its variation in families appear to depend not only on singularities but also on the behaviour in the neighbourhood of infinity. We find the asymptotic loss of total curvature towards infinity and we express the total curvature and the Gauss-Bonnet defect in terms of singularities and tangencies at infinity.
We construct algebraic-geometric families of genus one (i.e. elliptic) current and affine Lie algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. These families deform the classical current, respectively affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. The construction is induced by the geometric process of degenerating the elliptic curve to singular cubics. If the finite-dimensional Lie algebra defining the infinite dimensional current algebra is simple then, even if restricted to local families, the constructed families are non-equivalent to the trivial family. In particular, we show that the current algebra is geometrically…
