Let $I$ be an ideal of the polynomial ring $A[x]=A[x_1,...,x_n]$ over the commutative, noetherian ring $A$. Geometrically $I$ defines a family of affine schemes over $\Spec(A)$: For $\p\in\Spec(A)$, the fibre over $\p$ is the closed subscheme of affine space over the residue field $k(\p)$, which is determined by the extension of $I$ under the canonical map $σ_\p:A[x]\to k(\p)[x]$. If $I$ is homogeneous there is an analogous projective setting, but again the ideal defining the fibre is $\sigI$. For a chosen term order this ideal has a unique reduced Gröbner basis which is known to contain considerable geometric information about the fibre. We study the behavior of this basis for varying $\p$ and prove the existence of a canonical decomposition of the base space $\Spec(A)$ into finitely many locally closed subsets over which the reduced Gröbner bases of the fibres can be parametrized in a suitable way.
In this article we produce Groebner bases for the defining ideal of a monomial curve that corresponds to an almost arithmetic sequence of positive integers, correcting previous work of Sengupta,(2003).
Hilbert schemes of zero-dimensional ideals in a polynomial ring can be covered with suitable affine open subschemes whose construction is achieved using border bases. Moreover, border bases have proved to be an excellent tool for describing zero-dimensional ideals when the coefficients are inexact. And in this situation they show a clear advantage with respect to Groebner bases which, nevertheless, can also be used in the study of Hilbert schemes, since they provide tools for constructing suitable stratifications. In this paper we compare Groebner basis schemes with border basis schemes. It is…
Mustafin varieties are well-studied degenerations of projective spaces induced by a choice of integral points in a Bruhat--Tits building. In recent work, Annette Werner and the author initiated the study of degenerations of plane curves obtained by Mustafin varieties by means of arithmetic geometry. Moreover, we applied these techniques to construct models of vector bundles on plane curves with strongly semistable reduction. In this work, we take a Groebner basis approach to the more general problem of studying degenerations of projective varieties. Our methods include determining the behaviou…
For a given monomial ideal $J \subset k[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ and a given monomial order $\prec$, the moduli functor of all reduced Gröbner bases with respect to $\prec$ whose initial ideal is $J$ is determined. In some cases, such a functor is representable by an affine scheme of finite type over $k$, and a locally closed subfunctor of a Hilbert scheme. The moduli space is called the Gröbner basis scheme, the Gröbner strata and so on if it exists. This paper introduces an alternative procedure for explicitly constructing a defining ideal of the Gröbner basis scheme and its Zariski tangent spaces…
We parametrize the affine space of Artinian affine ideals of K[x,y] which have a given initial ideal with respect to the degree reverse lexicographic term order. The fact that the term order is degree compatible allows us to extend the parametrization to the projective case, namely zero-dimensional subschemes of the projective plane, with some extra assumption and to determine the Betti strata of these Groebner cells. This allows us to prove a formula due to A. Iarrobino for the codimension of the Betti strata of codimension two punctual schemes in the projective plane.
The main purpose of this paper is to lay the foundations of a general theory which encompasses the features of the classical Hough transform and extend them to general algebraic objects such as affine schemes. The main motivation comes from problems of detection of special shapes in medical and astronomical images. The classical Hough transform has been used mainly to detect simple curves such as lines and circles. We generalize this notion using reduced Groebner bases of flat families of affine schemes. To this end we introduce and develop the theory of Hough regularity. The theory is highly …
Let $k$ be an arbitrary field, and C be a curve in A^n defined parametrically by x_1=f_1(t),...,x_n=f_n(t), where f_1,...,f_n\in k[t]. A necessary and sufficient condition for the two function fields k(t) and k(f_1,...,f_n) to be same is developed in terms of zero-dimensionality of a derived ideal in the bivariate polynomial ring k[s,t]. Since zero-dimensionality of such an ideal can be readily determined by a Groebner basis computation, this gives an algorithm that determines if the parametrization ψ=(f_1,...,f_n): A --> C is a birational equivalence. We also develop an algorithm that determi…
We study the projective closures of three important families of affine monomial curves in dimension $4$, namely the Backelin curve, the Bresinsky curve and the Arslan curve, in order to explore possible connections between syzygies and the arithmetic Cohen-Macaulay property.
In this paper our aim is twofold. First, we introduce the notion of star gluing of numerical semigroups and show that arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties of the projective closure are preserved under this gluing operation. We then give a condition on Gröbner basis of the defining ideal of an affine monomial curve which ensures that the Betti sequence of the affine curve is the same as the Betti sequence of its projective closure. We also study the effect of simple gluing on Betti sequences of the projective closure. Finally, we construct some numerical semigroups, using a g…
Let $X \subset Y$ be closed (possibly singular) subschemes of a smooth projective toric variety $T$. We show how to compute the Segre class $s(X,Y)$ as a class in the Chow group of $T$. Building on this, we give effective methods to compute intersection products in projective varieties, to determine algebraic multiplicity without working in local rings, and to test pairwise containment of subvarieties of $T$. Our methods may be implemented without using Groebner bases; in particular any algorithm to compute the number of solutions of a zero-dimensional polynomial system may be used.
Let A be an affine algebra over the field of real numbers of dimension d. Let f \in A be an element not belonging to any real maximal ideal of A. Let P be a projective A-module of rank \geq d-1. Let (a,p) \in A_f \oplus P_f be a unimodular element. Then the projective A_f module Q=A_f \oplus P_f/(a,p)A_f is extended from A.
Let $p\neq 2$, and let $R$ be a smooth affine algebra of dimension $3$ over $\overline{F}_p$ and $P, Q$ be projective $R$-modules of rank $2$, each with trivial determinant. We prove: $P$ is isomorphic to $Q$ if and only if there is an ideal $J\subset R$ of height $2$ such that both $P$ and $Q$ map onto $J$.
We survey recent results on open embeddings of the affine space $\mathbb{C}^n$ into a complete algebraic variety $X$ such that the action of the vector group $\mathbb{G}_a^n$ on $\mathbb{C}^n$ by translations extends to an action of $\mathbb{G}_a^n$ on $X$. We begin with Hassett-Tschinkel correspondence describing equivariant embeddings of $\mathbb{C}^n$ into projective spaces and give its generalization for embeddings into projective hypersurfaces. Further sections deal with embeddings into flag varieties and their degenerations, complete toric varieties, and Fano varieties of certain types.
We generalize the notion of symmetric semigroups, pseudo symmetric semigroups, and row factorization matrices for pseudo Frobenius elements of numerical semigroups to the case of semigroups with maximal projective dimension (MPD semigroups).
We construct irreducible complex projective varieties such that the Lyubeznik numbers of their affine cones depend on the choices of projective embeddings. The main ingredient is the recent work of Reichelt-Saito-Walther, where the Lyubeznik numbers are reinterpreted using perverse sheaves and reducible projective varieties with dependent Lyubeznik numbers are constructed.
Let A be a ring of dimension d and let P be a projective A-module of rank d. We prove that if for every finite extension R of A, R^d is cancellative, then P is cancellative. This gives an alternate proof of Bhatwadekar's result: every projective module of rank d over an affine algebra of dimension d over a C_1-field of characteristic 0 is cancellative. Let P be a projective module of rank d-1 over an affine agebra of dimension d over an algebraically closed field. Then, it is not known if P is cancellative. We prove some results in this direction also.
We introduce and study the minimum distance function of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring with coefficients in a field, and show that it generalizes the minimum distance of projective Reed-Muller-type codes over finite fields. This gives an algebraic formulation of the minimum distance of a projective Reed-Muller-type code in terms of the algebraic invariants and structure of the underlying vanishing ideal. Then we give a method, based on Groebner bases and Hilbert functions, to find lower bounds for the minimum distance of certain Reed-Muller-type codes. Finally we show explicit upper bound…
Let $F$ be a field, let $D$ be a subring of $F$, and let ${\mathfrak{X}}$ be the Zariski-Riemann space of valuation rings containing $D$ and having quotient field $F$. We consider the Zariski, inverse and patch topologies on ${\mathfrak{X}}$ when viewed as a projective limit of projective integral schemes having function field contained in $F$, and we characterize the locally ringed subspaces of ${\mathfrak{X}}$ that are affine schemes.
A set of polynomials G in a polynomial ring S over a field is said to be a universal Groebner basis, if G is a Groebner basis with respect to every term order on S. Twenty years ago Bernstein, Sturmfels, and Zelevinsky proved that the set of the maximal minors of a matrix X of variables is a universal Groebner basis. Boocher recently proved that any initial ideal of the ideal of maximal minors of X has a linear resolution. In this paper we give a quick proof of the results mentioned above. Our proof is based on a specialization argument. Then we show that similar statements hold in a more g…
Let $k$ be an arbitrary field, the purpose of this work is to provide families of positive integers $\mathcal{A} = \{d_1,\ldots,d_n\}$ such that either the toric ideal $I_{\mathcal A}$ of the affine monomial curve $\mathcal C = \{(t^{d_1},\ldots,\,t^{d_n}) \ | \ t \in k\} \subset \mathbb{A}_k^n$ or the toric ideal $I_{\mathcal A^{\star}}$ of its projective closure ${\mathcal C^{\star}} \subset \mathbb{P}_k^n$ is a complete intersection. More precisely, we characterize the complete intersection property for $I_{\mathcal A}$ and for $I_{\mathcal A^{\star}}$ when: (a) $\mathcal{A}$ is a generaliz…
Let R be an affine algebra of dimension n \geq 3 over an algebraically closed field k. Suppose char k =0 or char k =p \geq n. Let g,f_1,...,f_r be a R-regular sequence and A=R[f_1/g,...,f_r/g]. Let P be a projective A-module of rank n-1 which is extended from R. Let (a,p) \in (A \op P) be a unimodular element and Q=A\op P/(a,p)A. Then, Q is extended from R. A similar result for affine algebras over reals are also proved.
I classify projective modules over idempotent semirings that are free on a monoid. The analysis extends to the case of the semiring of convex, piecewise-affine functions on a polyhedron, for which projective modules correspond to convex families of weight polyhedra for the general linear group.
