In this paper we give a description of hypersurfaces with trivial ring $AK(S)$, introduced by the second author as following. Let $X$ be an affine variety and let $G(X)$ be the group generated by all $\Bbb {C}^+$-actions on $X$. Then $AK(X)$ is the subring of all regular $G(X)-$ invariant functions on $X.$ We show that a smooth affine surface $S$ with $AK(S)=\Bbb C$ is quasihomogeneous and so may be obtained from a smooth rational projective surface by deleting a divisor of special form, which is called a ``zigzag''. We denote by $A$ the set of all such surfaces, and by $H$ those which have only three components in the zigzag. We prove that for a surface $S \in A$ the following statements are equivalent:
1. $S$ is isomorphic to a hypersurface;
2. $S$ is isomorphic to a hypersurface, defined by equation $xy=p(z)$ in $\Bbb {C}^3 ,$ where $p$ is a polynomial with simple roots only;
3. $S$ admits a fixed-point free $\Bbb {C}^+$- action;
4. $S\in H.$ Moreover, if $S_1 $ belongs to $H,$ and $S_2$ does not, then $S_1\times \Bbb {C}^k\not\cong S_2\times \Bbb {C}^k$ for any $k\in\Bbb N$.
For an affine variety $S$ we consider the ring $AK(S),$ which is the intersection of the rings of constants of all locally-nilpotent derivations of the ring $\Cal {O}(S).$ We show that $AK(S\times\Bbb {C}^n)=AK(S)$ for a smooth affine surface $S$ with $H^2(S,\Bbb {Z})=\{0\}.$
Let $X\subset\Bbb C^n$ be an affine variety and $f:X\to\Bbb C^m$ be the restriction to $X$ of a polynomial map $\Bbb C^n\to\Bbb C^m$. In this paper, we construct an affine Whitney stratification of $X$. The set $K(f)$ of stratified generalized critical values of $f$ can be also computed. We show that $K(f)$ is a nowhere dense subset of $\Bbb C^m$, which contains the set $B(f)$ of bifurcation values of $f$ by proving a version of the isotopy lemma for non-proper polynomial maps on singular varieties.
We give an example of geometric construction (via Hecke correspondences) of certain representations of the affine Lie algebra $\hat{gl}_n$. The construction is similar to the one of [FK] for the Lie algebra $sl_n$. Given a surface with a smooth embedded curve $C$ we consider the moduli spaces $K_α$ of rank $n$ parabolic sheaves satisfying certain conditions. The top dimensional irreducible components of $K_α$ are numbered by the isomorphism classes of $α$-dimensional nilpotent representations of the cyclic quiver $\tilde{A}_{n-1}$. Summing up over all $α\in{\Bbb N}[{\Bbb Z}/n{\Bbb Z}]$ we obta…
To every Gorenstein algebra $A$ of finite dimension greater than 1 over a field ${\Bbb F}$ of characteristic zero, and a projection $π$ on its maximal ideal ${\mathfrak m}$ with range equal to the annihilator $\hbox{Ann}({\mathfrak m})$ of ${\mathfrak m}$, one can associate a certain algebraic hypersurface $S_π\subset{\mathfrak m}$. Such hypersurfaces possess remarkable properties. They can be used, for instance, to help decide whether two given Gorenstein algebras are isomorphic, which for ${\Bbb F}={\Bbb C}$ leads to interesting consequences in singularity theory. Also, for ${\Bbb F}={\Bbb R…
A quadric in $\R P^3$ cuts a curve of degree 6 on a cubic surface in $\R P^3$. The papers classifies the nonsingular curves cut in this way on non-singular cubic surfaces up to homeomorphism. Two issues new in the study related to the first part of the 16th Hilbert problem appear in this classification. One is the distribution of the components of the curve between the components of the non-connected cubic surface which turns out to depend on the patterns of arrangements (see Theorem 1). The other is presence of positive genus among the components of the complement and genus-related restrictio…
The nonsingular Hermitian surface of degree $\sqrt{q} +1$ is characterized by its number of $\Bbb{F}_q$-points among the irreducible surfaces over $\Bbb{F}_q$ of degree $\sqrt{q} +1$ in the projective 3-space.
Let $ω$ be a relative differential on aithmetic surface $X$. We construct a family of rational functions $G_x$ on $X\otimes\Bbb{C}$, which can approximate local antiderivatives of $ω$ over an open set on $X\otimes\Bbb{C}$. From this family of functions, we construct a rational function $G_2$ on $X$. The function $G_2$ can generate an element in the ring of integers of a number field, which can approximate an inner product produced by $ω$ and the conjugate of $ω$ over an open set on $X\otimes\Bbb{C}$. This will give a relation between the height of a rational curve $E_P$ on $X$ and the canonica…
We present a generalized version of classical geometric invariant theory à la Mumford where we consider an affine algebraic group $G$ acting on a specific affine algebraic variety $X$. We define the notions of linearly reductive and of unipotent action in terms of the $G$ fixed point functor in the category of $(G,\Bbbk [X])$--modules. In the case that $X=\{\star\}$ we recuperate the concept of lineraly reductive and of unipotent group. We prove in our "relative" context some of the classical results of GIT such as: existence of quotients, finite generation of invariants, Kostant--Rosenlicht's…
In the previous paper, we established an elementary bound for numbers of points of surfaces in the projective $3$-space over ${\Bbb F}_q$. In this paper, we give the complete list of surfaces that attain the elementary bound. Precisely those surfaces are the hyperbolic surface, the nonsingular Hermitian surface, and the surface of minimum degree containing all ${\Bbb F}_q$-points of the $3$-space.
Let $X$ be a rational elliptic surface with elliptic fibration $π:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of any characteristic. Given a conic bundle $φ:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ we use numerical arguments to classify all possible fibers of $φ$ and study the interplay between singular fibers of $π$ and $φ$.
In this paper we give different compactifications for the domain and the codomain of an affine rational map $f$ which parametrizes a hypersurface. We show that the closure of the image of this map (with possibly some other extra hypersurfaces) can be represented by a matrix of linear syzygies. We compactify $\Bbb {A}^{n-1}$ into an $(n-1)$-dimensional projective arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of some $\Bbb {P}^N$. One particular interesting compactification of $\Bbb {A}^{n-1}$ is the toric variety associated to the Newton polytope of the polynomials defining $f$. We consider two diffe…
Affine rotation surfaces are a generalization of the well-known surfaces of revolution. Affine rotation surfaces arise naturally within the framework of affine differential geometry, a field started by Blaschke in the first decades of the past century. Affine rotations are the affine equivalents of Euclidean rotations, and include certain shears as well as Euclidean rotations. Affine rotation surfaces are surfaces invariant under affine rotations. In this paper, we analyze several properties of algebraic affine rotation surfaces and, by using some notions and results from affine differential g…
We consider algebraic manifolds $Y$ of dimension 3 over $\Bbb{C}$ with $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$ and $i>0$. Let $X$ be a smooth completion of $Y$ with $D=X-Y$, an effective divisor on $X$ with normal crossings. If the $D$-dimension of $X$ is not zero, then $Y$ is a fibre space over a smooth affine curve $C$ (i.e., we have a surjective morphism from $Y$ to $C$ such that general fibre is smooth and irreducible) such that every fibre satisfies the same vanishing condition. If an irreducible smooth fibre is not affine, then the Kodaira dimension of $X$ is $-\infty$ and the $D$-dimension …
We construct families of smooth affine surfaces with pairwise non isomorphic A 1-cylinders but whose A 2-cylinders are all isomorphic. These arise as complements of cuspidal hyperplane sections of smooth projective cubic surfaces.
We consider fibrations by affine lines on smooth affine surfaces obtained as complements of smooth rational curves $B$ in smooth projective surfaces $X$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We observe that except for two exceptions, these surfaces $X \setminus B$ admit infinitely many families of $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibrations over the projective line with irreducible fibers and a unique singular fiber of arbitrarily large multiplicity. For $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibrations over the affine line, we give a new and essentially self-contained proof that the set of equivalence cla…
In this paper we show that not all affine rational complex surfaces can be parametrized birationally and surjectively. For this purpose, we prove that, if S is an affine complex surface whose projective closure is smooth, a necessary condition for S to admit a birational surjective parametrization from an open subset of the affine complex plane is that the infinity curve of S must contain at least one rational component. As a consequence of this result we provide examples of affine rational surfaces that do not admit birational surjective parametrizations.
We prove that any smooth rational projective surface over the field of complex numbers has an open covering consisting of 3 subsets isomorphic to affine planes.
We construct explicit embeddings of generalized Danielewski surfaves in affine spaces. The equations defining these embeddings are obtained from the 2x2 minors of a matrix attached to a labelled rooted tree. Then we describe more precisely those surfaces with a trivial Makar-Limanov invariant.
We give a classification of normal affine surfaces admitting an algebraic group action with an open orbit. In particular an explicit algebraic description of the affine coordinate rings and the defining equations of such varieties is given. By our methods we recover many known results, e.g. the classification of normal affine surfaces with a `big' open orbit of Gizatullin and Popov or some of the classification results of Danilov-Gizatullin, Bertin and others.
We construct a smooth rational affine surface S with finite automorphism group but with the property that the group of automorphisms of the cylinder SxA^2 acts infinitely transitively on the complement of a closed subset of codimension at least two. Such a surface S is in particular rigid but not stably rigid with respect to the Makar-Limanov invariant.
For a smooth subvariety $X\subset\Bbb P^N$, consider (analogously to projective normality) the vanishing condition $H^1(\Bbb P^N,\Cal I^2_X(k))=0$, $k\ge3$. This condition is shown to be satisfied for all sufficiently large embeddings of a given $X$, and for a Veronese embedding of $\Bbb P^n$. For $C\subset\Bbb P^{g-1}$, the canonical embedding of a non-hyperelliptic curve, this condition guarantees the vanishing of some obstruction groups to deformations of the cone. Recall that the tangents to deformations are dual to the cokernel of the Gaussian-Wahl map. \proclaim{Theorem} Suppose the Gaus…
We classify smooth surfaces whose higher cohomologies of i-forms for all i vanish. We show that if such a surface is not affine, then it has essentially two possibilities.
We give a geometric proof of the fact that any affine surface with trivial Makar-Limanov invariant has finitely many singular points. We deduce that a complete intersection surface with trivial Makar-Limanov invariant is normal.
The main goal of this work is to prove that a very generic surface of degree at least 21 in complex projective 3-dimensional space is hyperbolic in the sense of Kobayashi. This means that every entire holomorphic map $f:{\Bbb C} \to X$ to the surface is constant. In 1970, Kobayashi conjectured more generally that a (very) generic hypersurface of sufficiently high degree in projective space is hyperbolic (here, the terminology "very generic" refers to complements of countable unions of proper algebraic subsets). Our technique follows the stream of ideas initiated by Green and Griffiths in 1979,…
Let $\AAutH (X)$ be the subgroup of the group $\AutH (X)$ of holomorphic automorphisms of a normal affine algebraic surface $X$ generated by elements of flows associated with complete algebraic vector fields. Our main result is a classification of all normal affine algebraic surfaces $X$ quasi-homogeneous under $\AAutH (X)$ in terms of the dual graphs of the boundaries $\bX \setminus X$ of their SNC-completions $\bX$.
We introduce a characterization for affine equivalence of two surfaces of translation defined by either rational or meromorphic generators. In turn, this induces a similar characterization for minimal surfaces. In the rational case, our results provide algorithms for detecting affine equivalence of these surfaces, and therefore, in particular, the symmetries of a surface of translation or a minimal surface of the considered types. Additionally, we apply our results to designing surfaces of translation and minimal surfaces with symmetries, and to computing the symmetries of the higher-order Enn…
We construct moduli spaces of complex affine and dilation surfaces. Using ideas of Veech, we show that the the moduli space of affine surfaces with fixed genus and with cone points of fixed complex order is a holomorphic affine bundle over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. Similarly, the moduli space of dilation surfaces is a covering space of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We classify the connected components of the moduli space of dilation surfaces and show that any component is an orbifold K(G,1) where G is the framed mapping class group of Calderon-Salter.
