The purpose of this paper is to compute asymptotically Hankel determinants for weights that are supported in a semi-infinite interval. The main idea is to reduce the problem to determinants of other operators whose determinant asymptotics are well known.
We establish asymptotic formulas for the determinants of finite Toeplitz + Hankel matrices of size N, as N goes to infinity for singular generating functions defined on the unit circle in the special case where the generating function is even, i.e., where the Toeplitz + Hankel matrices are symmetric.
The purpose of this paper is to describe asymptotic formulas for determinants of a sum of finite Toeplitz and Hankel matrices with singular generating functions. The formulas are similar to those of the analogous problem for finite Toeplitz matrices for a certain class of symbols. However, the appearance of the Hankel matrices changes the nature of the asymptotics in some instances depending on the location of the singularities. Several concrete examples are also described in the paper.
We study the asymptotics in n for n-dimensional Toeplitz determinants whose symbols possess Fisher-Hartwig singularities on a smooth background. We prove the general non-degenerate asymptotic behavior as conjectured by Basor and Tracy. We also obtain asymptotics of Hankel determinants on a finite interval as well as determinants of Toeplitz+Hankel type. Our analysis is based on a study of the related system of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle using the Riemann-Hilbert approach.
We study the Hankel determinant of the generalized Jacobi weight $(x-t)^γx^α(1-x)^β$ for $x\in[0,1]$ with $α, β>0$, $t < 0 $ and $γ\in\mathbb{R}$. Based on the ladder operators for the corresponding monic orthogonal polynomials $P_n(x)$, it is shown that the logarithmic derivative of Hankel determinant is characterized by a $τ$-function for the Painlevé VI system.
We give an overview of known results about Hilbert matrices from the point of view of orthogonal polynomials and compute Hankel determinants of harmonic numbers and related topics.
This (partly expository) paper originated from the study of Hankel determinants of convolution powers of Catalan numbers and of Narayana polynomials. This led to some Hankel determinants of signed Catalan numbers whose values are multiples of Fibonacci numbers and to some Hankel determinants of signed central binomial coefficients whose values are multiples of Lucas numbers. Most proofs are computational but we also include a combinatorial one due to Christian Krattenthaler. Finally we formulate some conjectures.
We study the asymptotics of Hankel determinants constructed using the values $ζ(an+b)$ of the Riemann zeta function at positive integers in an arithmetic progression. Our principal result is a Diophantine application of the asymptotics.
We derive a closed formula for the determinant of the Hankel matrix whose entries are given by sums of negative powers of the zeros of the regular Coulomb wave function. This new identity applied together with results of Grommer and Chebotarev allows us to prove a Hurwitz-type theorem about the zeros of the regular Coulomb wave function. As a particular case, we obtain a new proof of the classical Hurwitz's theorem from the theory of Bessel functions that is based on algebraic arguments. In addition, several Hankel determinants with entries given by the Rayleigh function and Bernoulli numbers …
We continue with the study of the Hankel determinant, $$ D_{n}(t,α,β):=\det\left(\int_{0}^{1}x^{j+k}w(x;t,α,β)dx\right)_{j,k=0}^{n-1}, $$ generated by a Pollaczek-Jacobi type weight, $$ w(x;t,α,β):=x^α(1-x)^β{\rm e}^{-t/x}, \quad x\in [0,1], \quad α>0, \quad β>0, \quad t\geq 0. $$ This reduces to the "pure" Jacobi weight at $t=0.$ We may take $α\in \mathbb{R}$, in the situation while $t$ is strictly greater than $0.$ It was shown in Chen and Dai (2010), that the logarithmic derivative of this Hankel determinant satisfies a Jimbo-Miwa-Okamoto $σ$-form of Painlevé \uppercase\expandafter{\romannu…
Using continued fraction expansions of certain polygamma functions as a main tool, we find orthogonal polynomials with respect to the odd-index Bernoulli polynomials $B_{2k+1}(x)$ and the Euler polynomials $E_{2k+ν}(x)$, for $ν=0, 1, 2$. In the process we also determine the corresponding Jacobi continued fractions (or J-fractions) and Hankel determinants. In all these cases the Hankel determinants are polynomials in $x$ which factor completely over the rationals.
In this paper, we consider the Hankel determinants associated with the singularly perturbed Laguerre weight $w(x)=x^αe^{-x-t/x}$, $x\in (0, \infty)$, $t>0$ and $α>0$. When the matrix size $n\to\infty$, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the Hankel determinants, valid uniformly for $t\in (0, d]$, $d>0$ fixed. A particular Painlevé III transcendent is involved in the approximation, as well as in the large-$n$ asymptotics of the leading coefficients and recurrence coefficients for the corresponding perturbed Laguerre polynomials. The derivation is based on the asymptotic results in an earlier pa…
To each nonzero sequence $s:= \{s_{n}\}_{n \geq 0}$ of real numbers we associate the Hankel determinants $D_{n} = \det \mathcal{H}_{n}$ of the Hankel matrices $\mathcal{H}_{n}:= (s_{i + j})_{i, j = 0}^{n}$, $n \geq 0$, and the nonempty set $N_{s}:= \{n \geq 1 \, | \, D_{n-1} \neq 0 \}$. We also define the Hankel determinant polynomials $P_0:=1$, and $P_n$, $n\geq 1$ as the determinant of the Hankel matrix $\mathcal H_n$ modified by replacing the last row by the monomials $1, x, \ldots, x^n$. Clearly $P_n$ is a polynomial of degree at most $n$ and of degree $n$ if and only if $n\in N_s $. Krone…
In this paper we investigate algebraic, differential and asymptotic properties of polynomials $p_n(x)$ that are orthogonal with respect to the complex oscillatory weight $w(x)=e^{iωx}$ on the interval $[-1,1]$, where $ω>0$. We also investigate related quantities such as Hankel determinants and recurrence coefficients. We prove existence of the polynomials $p_{2n}(x)$ for all values of $ω>0$, as well as degeneracy of $p_{2n+1}(x)$ at certain values of $ω$ (called kissing points). We obtain detailed asymptotic information as $ω\to\infty$, using recent theory of multivariate highly oscillatory in…
In this paper, we consider polynomials orthogonal with respect to a varying perturbed Laguerre weight $e^{-n(z-\log z+t/z)}$ for $t<0$ and $z$ on certain contours in the complex plane. When the parameters $n$, $t$ and the degree $k$ are fixed, the Hankel determinant for the singular complex weight is shown to be the isomonodromy $τ$-function of the Painlevé III equation. When the degree $k=n$, $n$ is large and $t$ is close to a critical value, inspired by the study of the Wigner time delay in quantum transport, we show that the double scaling asymptotic behaviors of the recurrence coefficients…
We study $n\times n$ Hankel determinants constructed with moments of a Hermite weight with a Fisher-Hartwig singularity on the real line. We consider the case when the singularity is in the bulk and is both of root-type and jump-type. We obtain large $n$ asymptotics for these Hankel determinants, and we observe a critical transition when the size of the jumps varies with $n$. These determinants arise in the thinning of the generalised Gaussian unitary ensembles and in the construction of special function solutions of the Painlevé IV equation.
Generalized Vorob'ev-Yablonski polynomials have been introduced by Clarkson and Mansfield in their study of rational solutions of the second Painlevé hierarchy. We present new Hankel determinant identities for the squares of these special polynomials in terms of Schur polynomials. As an application of the identities, we analyze the roots of generalized Vorob'ev-Yablonski polynomials and provide formulæ\, for the boundary curves of the highly regular patterns observed numerically in \cite{CM}.
In this paper we prove Garvan's conjectured formula for the square of the modular discriminant $Δ$ as a 3 by 3 Hankel determinant of classical Eisenstein series $E_{2n}$. We then obtain similar formulas involving minors of Hankel determinants for $E_{2r}Δ^m$, for $m=1,2,3$ and $r=2,3,4,5,7$, and $E_{14}Δ^4$. We next use Mathematica to discover, and then the standard structure theory of the ring of modular forms, to derive the general form of our infinite family of formulas extending the classical formula for $Δ$ and Garvan's formula for $Δ^2$. This general formula expresses the $n\times n$ Han…
We review the asymptotic behavior of a class of Toeplitz (as well as related Hankel and Toeplitz + Hankel) determinants which arise in integrable models and other contexts. We discuss Szego, Fisher-Hartwig asymptotics, and how a transition between them is related to the Painleve V equation. Certain Toeplitz and Hankel determinants reduce, in certain double-scaling limits, to Fredholm determinants which appear in the theory of group representations, in random matrices, random permutations and partitions. The connection to Toeplitz determinants helps to evaluate the asymptotics of related Fredho…
In the present paper we derive a new Hankel determinant representation for the square of the Vorob'ev-Yablonski polynomial $\mathcal{Q}_n(x),x\in\mathbb{C}$. These polynomials are the major ingredients in the construction of rational solutions to the second Painlevé equation $u_{xx}=xu+2u^3+α$. As an application of the new identity, we study the zero distribution of $\mathcal{Q}_n(x)$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$ by asymptotically analyzing a certain collection of (pseudo) orthogonal polynomials connected to the aforementioned Hankel determinant. Our approach reproduces recently obtained results in…
We study orthogonal polynomials and Hankel determinants generated by a symmetric semi-classical Jacobi weight. By using the ladder operator technique, we derive the second-order nonlinear difference equations satisfied by the recurrence coefficient $β_n(t)$ and the sub-leading coefficient $\mathrm{p}(n,t)$ of the monic orthogonal polynomials. This enables us to obtain the large $n$ asymptotics of $β_n(t)$ and $\mathrm{p}(n,t)$ based on the result of Kuijlaars et al. [Adv. Math. \textbf{188} (2004) 337-398]. In addition, we show the second-order differential equation satisfied by the orthogonal…
Magnitude is an invariant of metric spaces with origins in category theory. Using potential theoretic methods, Barceló and Carbery gave an algorithm for calculating the magnitude of any odd dimensional ball in Euclidean space, and they proved that it was a rational function of the radius of the ball. In this paper an explicit formula is given for the magnitude of each odd dimensional ball in terms of a ratio of Hankel determinants of reverse Bessel polynomials. This is done by finding a distribution on the ball which solves the weight equations. Using Schröder paths and a continued fraction ex…
To a sequence (s_n)_{n\ge 0} of real numbers we associate the sequence of Hankel matrices \mathcal H_n=(s_{i+j}),0\le i,j \le n. We prove that if the corresponding sequence of Hankel determinants D_n=\det\mathcal H_n satisfy D_n>0 for n<n_0 while D_n=0 for n\ge n_0, then all Hankel matrices are positive semi-definite, and in particular (s_n) is the sequence of moments of a discrete measure concentrated in n_0 points on the real line. We stress that the conditions D_n\ge 0 for all n do not imply the positive semi-definiteness of the Hankel matrices.
A complete characterization is provided of Hankel matrices commuting with Jacobi matrices which correspond to hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials from the Askey scheme. It follows, as the main result of the paper, that the generalized Hilbert matrix is the only prominent infinite-rank Hankel matrix which, if regarded as an operator on $\ell^{2}(\mathbb{N}_{0})$, is diagonalizable by application of the commutator method with Jacobi matrices from the mentioned families.
Four new examples of explicitly diagonalizable Hankel matrices depending on a parameter $k\in(0,1)$ are presented. The Hankel matrices are regarded as matrix operators on the Hilbert space $\ell^{2}(\mathbb{N}_{0})$ and the solution of the spectral problem is based on an application of the commutator method. Each of the Hankel matrices commutes with a Jacobi matrix which is related to a particular family of the Stieltjes-Carlitz polynomials. More examples of explicitly diagonalizable structured matrix operators are obtained when taking into account also weighted Hankel matrices.
