A finitely presented, torsion free, abelian-by-cyclic group can always be written as an ascending HNN extension Gamma_M of Z^n, determined by an n x n integer matrix M with det(M) \ne 0. The group Gamma_M is polycyclic if and only if |det(M)|=1. We give a complete classification of the nonpolycyclic groups Gamma_M up to quasi-isometry: given n x n integer matrices M,N with |det(M)|, |det(N)| > 1, the groups Gamma_M, Gamma_N are quasi-isometric if and only if there exist positive integers r,s such that M^r, N^s have the same absolute Jordan form. We also prove quasi-isometric rigidity: if Gamma_M is an abelian-by-cyclic group determined by an n x n integer matrix M with |det(M)| > 1, and if G is any finitely generated group quasi-isometric to Gamma_M, then there is a finite normal subgroup K of G such that G/K is abstractly commensurable to Gamma_N, for some n x n integer matrix N with |det(N)| > 1.
In this note, we give a new formula for the number of cyclic subgroups of a finite abelian group. This is based on applying the Burnside's lemma to a certain group action. Also, it generalizes the well-known Menon's identity.
We obtain a classification of the finite two-generated cyclic-by-abelian groups of prime-power order. For that we associate to each such group $G$ a list $\inv(G)$ of numerical group invariants which determines the isomorphism type of $G$. Then we describe the set formed by all the possible values of $\inv(G)$. This allows computer implementations for constructing all the finite-two generated cyclic-by-abelian groups of a given prime-power order, computing the invariants of such a group, and to decide whether two such groups are isomorphic.
We use groups with triality to construct a series of nonassociative Moufang loops. Certain members of this series contain an abelian normal subloop with the corresponding quotient being a cyclic group. In particular, we give a new series of examples of finite abelian-by-cyclic Moufang loops. The previously known [A. Rajah, J. Alg., 235 (2001), 66-93] loops of this type of odd order 3q^3, with prime q congruent to 1 mod 3, are particular cases of our series. Some of the examples are shown to be embeddable into a Cayley algebra.
We study abelian-by-cyclic Moufang loops. We construct all split $3$-divisible abelian-by-cyclic Moufang loops from so-called Moufang permutations on abelian groups $(X,+)$, which are permutations that deviate from an automorphism of $(X,+)$ by an alternating biadditive mapping (satisfying certain properties). More generally, we obtain additional abelian-by-cyclic Moufang loops from so-called construction pairs. As an aside, we show that in the Moufang loops $Q$ obtained from a construction pair on $(X,+)$ the abelian normal subgroup $(X,+)$ induces an abelian congruence of $Q$ if and only if …
Let $G$ be a finite group and $α(G)=\frac{|C(G)|}{|G|}$\,, where $C(G)$ denotes the set of cyclic subgroups of $G$. In this short note, we prove that $α(G)\leqα(Z(G))$ and we describe the groups $G$ for which the equality occurs. This gives some sufficient conditions for a finite group to be $4$-abelian or abelian.
We prove by using simple number-theoretic arguments formulae concerning the number of elements of a fixed order and the number of cyclic subgroups of a direct product of several finite cyclic groups. We point out that certain multiplicative properties of related counting functions for finite Abelian groups are immediate consequences of these formulae.
We study blocks with an abelian defect group and a cyclic inertial quotient acting freely but not transitively. We prove that when p=2, such blocks are inertial, i.e. basic Morita equivalent to their Brauer correspondent. Together with a result of the second author on Singer cycle actions on homocyclic defect groups, this completes the classification of 2-blocks with a cyclic inertial quotient acting freely on an abelian defect group.
In this paper we introduce a polynomial time algorithm that solves both the conjugacy decision and search problems in free abelian-by-infinite cyclic groups where the input is elements in normal form. We do this by adapting the work of Bogopolski, Martino, Maslakova, and Ventura in \cite{bogopolski2006conjugacy} and Bogopolski, Martino, and Ventura in \cite{bogopolski2010orbit}, to free abelian-by-infinite cyclic groups, and in certain cases apply a polynomial time algorithm for the orbit problem over $\Z^n$ by Kannan and Lipton.
Let $G \simeq M \rtimes C$ be an $n$-generator group with $M$ Abelian and $C$ cyclic. We study the Nielsen equivalence classes and T-systems of generating $n$-tuples of $G$. The subgroup $M$ can be turned into a finitely generated faithful module over a suitable quotient $R$ of the integral group ring of $C$. When $C$ is infinite, we show that the Nielsen equivalence classes of the generating $n$-tuples of $G$ correspond bijectively to the orbits of unimodular rows in $M^{n -1}$ under the action of a subgroup of $GL_{n - 1}(R)$. Making no assumption on the cardinality of $C$, we exhibit a comp…
We extend the concepts of antimorphism and antiautomorphism of the additive group of integers modulo $n$, given by Gaitanas Konstantinos, to abelian groups. We give a lower bound for the number of antiautomorphisms of cyclic groups of odd order and give an exact formula for the number of linear antiautomorphisms of cyclic groups of odd order. Finally, we give a partial classification of the finite abelian groups which admit antiautomorphisms and state some open questions.
Zassenhaus Conjecture for torsion units states that every augmentation one torsion unit of the integral group ring of a finite group G is conjugate to an element of G in the units of rational group algebra QG. This conjecture has been proved for nilpotent groups, metacyclic groups and some other families of groups. We prove the conjecture for cyclic-by-abelian groups.
For groups of diffeomorphisms of $\T^2$ containing an Anosov diffeomorphism, we give a complete classification for polycyclic Abelian-by-Cyclic group actions on $\T^2$ up to both topological conjugacy and smooth conjugacy under mild assumptions. Along the way, we also prove a Tits alternative type theorem for some groups of diffeomorphisms of $\T^2$.
We determine a condition on the minimum Hamming weight of some special abelian group codes and, as a consequence of this result, we establish that any such code is, up to permutational equivalence, a subspace of the direct sum of $s$ copies of the repetition code of length $t$, for some suitable positive integers $s$ and $t$. Moreover, we provide a complete characterisation of permutation automorphisms of the linear code $C=\bigoplus_{i=1}^{s}Rep_{t}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ and we establish that such a code is an abelian group code, for every pair of integers $s,t\geq1$. Finally, in a similar fashion…
Hans Zassenhaus conjectured that every torsion unit of the integral group ring of a finite group $G$ is conjugate within the rational group algebra to an element of the form $\pm g$ with $g\in G$. This conjecture has been disproved recently for metabelian groups, by Eisele and Margolis. However it is known to be true for many classes of solvable groups, as for example nilpotent groups, cyclic-by-abelian groups and groups having a cyclic Sylow subgroup with abelian complement. On the other hand, it is not known whether the conjecture holds for supersolvable groups. This paper is a contribution …
Let G be a group. The intersection graph G(G) of G is an undirected graph without loops and multiple edges defined as follows: the vertex set is the set of all proper nontrivial subgroups of G; and there is an edge between two distinct vertices X and Y if and only if X \ Y 6= 1 where 1 denotes the trivial subgroup of G: It was conjectured in [2] that two (non cyclic) finite abelian groups with isomorphic intersection graphs are isomorphic. In this paper we study this conjecture and show that it is almost true. For any inite abelian group D let Dnc be the product of all noncyclic Sylow subgroup…
We describe the autotopism group Atp(G) of any abelian group G as being a semidirect product of its automorphism group Aut(G) and G^2. We then provide the subgroup structure of Atp(G) when G is a finite cyclic group.
We show that any soluble group $G$ of type Bredon-$\FP_{\infty}$ with respect to the family of all virtually cyclic subgroups such that centralizers of infinite order elements are of type $\FP_{\infty}$ must be virtually cyclic. To prove this, we first reduce the problem to the case of polycyclic groups and then we show that a polycyclic-by-finite group with finitely many conjugacy classes of maximal virtually cyclic subgroups is virtually cyclic. Finally we discuss refinements of this result: we only impose the property Bredon-$\FP_n$ for some $n \leq 3$ and restrict to abelian-by-nilpotent, …
Let $G$ be a finite group and $\Z G$ its integral group ring. We show that if $α$ is a non-trivial bicyclic unit of $\Z G$, then there are bicyclic units $β$ and $γ$ of different types, such that $\GEN{α,β}$ and $\GEN{α,γ}$ are non-abelian free groups. In case that $G$ is non-abelian of order coprime with 6, then we prove the existence of a bicyclic unit $u$ and a Bass cyclic unit $v$ in $\Z G$, such that for every positive integer $m$ big enough, $\GEN{u^m,v}$ is a free non-abelian group.
The bracket map was originally considered for locally compact abelian groups. In this work we extend the study of bracket maps to the noncommutative setting, providing characterizations of bases and frames for cyclic subspaces of the Heisenberg group. We also indicate how to generalize these results to a class of non-abelian nilpotent Lie groups whose irreducible representations are square integrable modulo the center.
Presentations for the holomorphs of abelian groups of the form $C_{p^n} \times 1^{m}$ for $p$=2 or an odd prime are given. These presentations extend the results given in Burnside's well-known text on finite groups on the holomorphs for the cyclic groups of orders $p^n$ for $p$ being an odd or even prime.
Recent results of Qu and Tuarnauceanu describe explicitly the finite p-groups which are not elementary abelian and have the property that the number of their subgroups is maximal among p-groups of a given order. We complement these results from the bottom level up by determining completely the non-cyclic finite p-groups whose number of subgroups among p-groups of a given order is minimal.
We show, using Wise's equitable sets criterion, that every tubular free by cyclic group acts freely on a CAT(0) cube complex. We also show that these groups have a finite index subgroup satisfying the strongest Tits alternative, which means that every subgroup either surjects a non abelian free group or is torsion free abelian. In particular the Gersten group is the first known group virtually having this property but which is not virtually special nor virtually residually free.
The notion of active sum provides an analogue for groups of that of direct sum for abelian groups. One natural question then is which groups are the active sum of cyclic subgroups. Many groups have been found to give a positive answer to this question, while the case of finite metacyclic groups remained unknown. In this note we show that every finite metacyclic group can be recovered as the active sum of a discrete family of cyclic subgroups.
We solve a fundamental question posed in Frohardt's 1988 paper [8] on finite $2$-groups with Kantor familes, by showing that finite groups $K$ with a Kantor family $(\mathcal{F},\mathcal{F}^*)$ having distinct members $A, B \in \mathcal{F}$ such that $A^* \cap B^*$ is a central subgroup of $K$ and the quotient $K/(A^* \cap B^*)$ is abelian cannot exist if the center of $K$ has exponent $4$ and the members of $\mathcal{F}$ are elementary abelian. Then we give a short geometrical proof of a recent result of Ott which says that finite skew translation quadrangles of even order $(t,t)$ (where $t$ …
In this paper we study asymptotic density of rational sets in free abelian group $\mathbb{Z}^n$ of rank $n$. We show that any rational set $R$ in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ has asymptotic density. If $R$ is given by its semi-simple decomposition we show how to compute its asymptotic density.
Let $G$ be a group. \textit{The permutability graph of cyclic subgroups of $G$}, denoted by $Γ_c(G)$, is a graph with all the proper cyclic subgroups of $G$ as its vertices and two distinct vertices in $Γ_c(G)$ are adjacent if and only if the corresponding subgroups permute in $G$. In this paper, we classify the finite groups whose permutability graph of cyclic subgroups belongs to one of the following: bipartite, tree, star graph, triangle-free, complete bipartite, $P_n$, $C_n$, $K_4$, $K_{1,3}$-free, unicyclic. We classify abelian groups whose permutability graph of cyclic subgroups are plan…
In this article, we first characterize pseudocomplemented inductive modular lattices by using their two 0-sublattices. Then we use two 0-sublattices of a subgroup lattice to describe all locally cyclic abelian groups. In particular, we show that a locally cyclic abelian group can be characterized by its three subgroups.
A finite group $G$ is called a Schur group, if any Schur ring over $G$ is associated in a natural way with a subgroup of $Sym(G)$ that contains all right translations. Recently, the authors have completely identified the cyclic Schur groups. In this paper it is shown that any abelian Schur group belongs to one of several explicitly given families only. In particular, any non-cyclic abelian Schur group of odd order is isomorphic to $Z_3\times Z_{3^k}$ or $Z_3\times Z_3\times Z_p$ where $k\ge 1$ and $p$ is a prime. In addition, we prove that $Z_2\times Z_2\times Z_p$ is a Schur group for every p…
We verify the inductive blockwise Alperin weight (BAW) and the inductive Alperin-McKay (AM) conditions introduced by the second author for blocks of finite quasisimple groups with cyclic defect groups. Furthermore we establish a criterion that describes conditions under which the inductive AM condition for blocks with abelian defect groups implies the inductive BAW condition for those blocks.
A permutation group $G\le\operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$ is said to be $2$-closed if no group $H$ such that $G<H\le\operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$ has the same orbits on $Ω\timesΩ$ as $G$. A simple and efficient inductive criterion for the $2$-closedness is established for abelian permutation groups with cyclic transitive constituents.
This note uses some recent calculations of Conder and Bujalance (on classifying finite index group extensions of Fuchsian groups with abelian quotient and torsion free kernel) in order to determine the full automorphism groups of some cylic coverings of the line (including curves of Fermat and Lefschetz type). The answer is complete for cyclic covers that branch over three points.
Refining a result of Erdos and Mays, we give asymptotic series expansions for the functions $A(x)-C(x)$, the count of $n\leq x$ for which every group of order $n$ is abelian (but not all cyclic), and $N(x)-A(x)$, the count of $n\leq x$ for which every group of order $n$ is nilpotent (but not all abelian).
We show that the conjugacy problem in a wreath product $A \wr B$ is uniform-$\mathsf{TC}^0$-Turing-reducible to the conjugacy problem in the factors $A$ and $B$ and the power problem in $B$. If $B$ is torsion free, the power problem for $B$ can be replaced by the slightly weaker cyclic submonoid membership problem for $B$. Moreover, if $A$ is abelian, the cyclic subgroup membership problem suffices, which itself is uniform-$\mathsf{AC}^0$-many-one-reducible to the conjugacy problem in $A \wr B$. Furthermore, under certain natural conditions, we give a uniform $\mathsf{TC}^0$ Turing reduction f…
We classify up to coarse equivalence all countable abelian groups of finite torsion free rank. The Q-cohomological dimension and the torsion free rank are the two invariants that give us such classification. We also prove that any countable abelian group of finite torsion free rank is coarsely equivalent to Z^n + H where H is a direct sum (possibly infinite) of cyclic groups. A partial generalization to countable abelian groups of the Gromov rigidity theorem for abelian groups is shown.
We compute the asymptotic dimension of the rationals given with an invariant proper metric. Also, we show that a countable torsion abelian group taken with an invariant proper metric has asymptotic dimension zero.
A group K is said to be a B-group if every permutation group containing K as a regular subgroup is either imprimitive or 2-transitive. In the second edition of his influential textbook on finite groups, Burnside published a proof that cyclic groups of composite prime-power degree are B-groups. Ten years later in 1921 he published a proof that every abelian group of composite degree is a B-group. Both proofs are character-theoretic and both have serious flaws. Indeed, the second result is false. In this note we explain these flaws and prove that every cyclic group of composite order is a B-grou…
