We consider the analytic continuation of the transfer function for a 2x2 matrix Hamiltonian into the unphysical sheets of the energy Riemann surface. We construct non-selfadjoint operators representing operator roots of the transfer function which reproduce certain parts of its spectrum including resonances situated in the unphysical sheets neighboring the physical sheet. On this basis, completeness and basis properties for the root vectors of the transfer function (including those for the resonances) are proved.
We describe a method for constructing vector coherent states for quantum supersymmetric partner Hamiltonians. The method is then applied to such partner Hamiltonians arising from a generalization of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Explicit examples are worked out.
The general aim of this paper is to extend the Modal-Hamiltonian interpretation of quantum mechanics to the case of relativistic quantum mechanics with gauge U(1) elds. In this case we propose that the actual- valued observables are the Casimir operators of the Poincaré group and of the group U(1) of the internal symmetry of the theory. Moreover, we also show that the magnitudes that acquire actual values in the relativistic and in the non-relativistic cases are correctly related through the adequate limit.
For an arbitrary possibly non-Hermitian matrix Hamiltonian H, that might involve exceptional points, we construct an appropriate parameter space M and the lines bundle L^n over M such that the adiabatic geometric phases associated with the eigenstates of the initial Hamiltonian coincide with the holonomies of L^n. We examine the case of 2 x 2 matrix Hamiltonians in detail and show that, contrary to claims made in some recent publications, geometric phases arising from encircling exceptional points are generally geometrical and not topological in nature.
A higher order Painleve system of type D^{(1)}_{2n+2} was introduced by Y. Sasano. It is an extension of the sixth Painleve equation for the affine Weyl group symmetry. It is also expressed as a Hamiltonian system of order 2n with a coupled Painleve VI Hamiltonian. In this paper, we discuss a derivation of this system from a Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy.
Inspired by problems arising in the geometrical treatment of Yang-Mills theories and Palatini's gravity, the covariant formulation of Hamiltonian dynamical systems as a Hamiltonian field theory of dimension $1+0$ on a manifold with boundary is discussed. After a precise statement of Hamilton's variational principle in this context, the geometrical properties of the space of solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations of the theory are analyzed. A sufficient condition is obtained that guarantees that the set of solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations at the boundary of the manifold, fill a Lagr…
We analyze a set of three PT-symmetric complex potentials, namely harmonic oscillator, generalized Poschl-Teller and Scarf II, all of which reveal a double series of energy levels along with the corresponding superpotential. Inspired by the fact that two superpotentials reside naturally in order-two parasupersymmetry (PSUSY) and second-derivative supersymmetry (SSUSY) schemes, we complexify their frameworks to successfully account for the three potentials.
Perturbation theory is used systematically to investigate the symmetries of the Dirac Hamiltonian and their breaking in atomic nuclei. Using the perturbation corrections to the single-particle energies and wave functions, the link between the single-particle states in realistic nuclei and their counterparts in the symmetry limits is discussed. It is shown that the limit of S-V=const and relativistic harmonic oscillator (RHO) potentials can be connected to the actual Dirac Hamiltonian by the perturbation method, while the limit of S+V=const cannot, where S and V are the scalar and vector potent…
This article includes a short survey of selected averaging and dimension reduction techniques for deterministic fast-slow systems. This survey includes, among others, classical techniques, such as the WKB approximation or the averaging method, as well as modern techniques, such as the GENERIC formalism. The main part of this article combines ideas of some of these techniques and addresses the problem of deriving a reduced system for the slow degrees of freedom (DOF) of a fast-slow Hamiltonian system. In the first part, we derive an asymptotic expansion of the averaged evolution of the fast-slo…
In this paper we construct and analyze a two-well Hamiltonian on a 2D atomic lattice. The two wells of the Hamiltonian are prescribed by two rank-one connected martensitic twins, respectively. By constraining the deformed configurations to special 1D atomic chains with position-dependent elongation vectors for the vertical direction, we show that the structure of ground states under appropriate boundary conditions is close to the macroscopically expected twinned configurations with additional boundary layers localized near the twinning interfaces. In addition, we proceed to a continuum limit, …
We relate free vector dynamics to the eigenvalue motion of a time-dependent real-symmetric NxN matrix, and give a geodesic interpretation to Ruijsenaars Schneider models.
This paper treats 6j symbols or their orthonormal forms as a function of two variables spanning a square manifold which we call the "screen". We show that this approach gives important and interesting insight. This two dimensional perspective provides the most natural extension to exhibit the role of these discrete functions as matrix elements that appear at the very foundation of the modern theory of classical discrete orthogonal polynomials. Here we present 2D and 1D recursion relations that are useful for the direct computation of the orthonormal 6j, which we name U. We present a convention…
A class of fast-slow Hamiltonian systems with potential $U_\varepsilon$ describing the interaction of non-ergodic fast and slow degrees of freedom is studied. The parameter $\varepsilon$ indicates the typical timescale ratio of the fast and slow degrees of freedom. It is known that the Hamiltonian system converges for $\varepsilon\to0$ to a homogenised Hamiltonian system. We study the situation where $\varepsilon$ is small but positive. First, we rigorously derive the second-order corrections to the homogenised (slow) degrees of freedom. They can be decomposed into explicitly given terms that …
We construct Lie algebras arising from commutators of the harmonic Hamiltonian and the perturbed anharmonic Hamiltonian. From there we form a very specific element of the associated Lie group and transform the unperturbed Hamiltonian into the perturbed Hamiltonian minus perturbation energies. An explicit formula is given for the first order perturbation energy of all Hamiltonians of the form H = a^{\dagger}a + 1/2 + λx^n.
We suggest a Hamiltonian formulation for the spin Ruijsenaars-Schneider system in the trigonometric case. Within this interpretation, the phase space is obtained by a quasi-Hamiltonian reduction performed on (the cotangent bundle to) a representation space of a framed Jordan quiver. For arbitrary quivers, analogous varieties were introduced by Crawley-Boevey and Shaw, and their interpretation as quasi-Hamiltonian quotients was given by Van den Bergh. Using Van den Bergh's formalism, we construct commuting Hamiltonian functions on the phase space and identify one of the flows with the spin Ruij…
We discuss the alternative algebraic structures on the manifold of quantum states arising from alternative Hermitian structures associated with quantum bi-Hamiltonian systems. We also consider the consequences at the level of the Heisenberg picture in terms of deformations of the associative product on the space of observables.
First-order Hamiltonian operators of hydrodynamic type were introduced by Drubrovin and Novikov in 1983. In 2D, they are generated by a pair of contravariant metrics $g$, $\tilde{g}$ and a pair of differential-geometric objects $b$, $\tilde{b}$. If the determinant of the pencil $g+λ\tilde{g}$ vanishes for all $λ$, the operator is called degenerate. In this paper we provide a complete classification of degenerate two- and three-component Hamiltonian operators. Moreover, we study the integrability, by the method of hydrodynamic reductions, of 2+1 Hamiltonian systems arising from the structures w…
A geometric interpretation of the duality between two real forms of the complex trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider system is presented. The phase spaces of the systems in duality are viewed as two different models of the same reduced phase space arising from a suitable symplectic reduction of the standard Heisenberg double of U(n). The collections of commuting Hamiltonians of the systems in duality are shown to descend from two families of `free' Hamiltonians on the double which are dual to each other in a Poisson-Lie sense. Our results give rise to a major simplification of Ruijsenaars' proo…
In these notes we address the canonical quantization of the cosmological models which appear as solutions of the low energy effective action of closed bosonic string theory (dilaton models). The analysis is restricted to the quantization of the minisuperspace models given by homogeneous and isotropic cosmological solutions. We study the different conceptual and technical problems arising in the Hamiltonian formulation of these models as a consequence of the presence of the so called Hamiltonian constraint. In particular we address the problem of time in quantum cosmology, the characterization …
We prove the existence of infinitely many time-periodic solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations using pseudo-holomorphic curve methods from Hamiltonian Floer theory. For the generalization of the Gromov-Floer compactness theorem to infinite dimensions, we show how to solve the arising small divisor problem by combining elliptic methods with results from the theory of diophantine approximations.
This paper deals with the mathematical spectral analysis and physical interpretation of a fermionic system described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian possessing real eigenvalues. A statistical thermodynamical description of such a system is considered. Approximate expressions for the energy expectation value and the number operator expectation value, in terms of the absolute temperature $T$ and of the chemical potential $μ$, are obtained, based on the Euler-Maclaurin formula.
The partition functions of three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on different manifolds can be expressed as q-hypergeometric integrals. By comparing the partition functions of three-dimensional mirror dual theories, one finds complicated integral identities. In some cases, these identities can be written in the form of pentagon relations. Such identities often have an interpretation as the Pachner's 3-2 move for triangulated manifolds via the so-called 3d-3d correspondence. From the physics perspective, another important application of pentagon identities is that they may be used…
The main goal of these lectures -- introduction to Quantum Mechanics for mathematically-minded readers. The second goal is to discuss the mathematical interpretation of the main quantum postulates: transitions between quantum stationary orbits, wave-particle duality and probabilistic interpretation. We suggest a dynamical interpretation of these phenomena based on the new conjectures on attractors of nonlinear Hamiltonian partial differential equations. This conjecture is confirmed for a list of {\it model Hamiltonian nonlinear} PDEs by the results obtained since 1990 (we survey sketchy these …
In 1980 Englert examined the classic problem of the electromagnetic self-force on an oscillating charged particle. His approach, which was based on an earlier idea of Bateman, was to introduce a charge-conjugate particle and to show that the two-particle system is Hamiltonian. Unfortunately, Englert's model did not solve the problem of runaway modes, and the corresponding quantum theory had ghost states. It is shown here that Englert's Hamiltonian is PT symmetric, and that the problems with his model arise because the PT symmetry is broken at both the classical and quantum level. However, by a…
Our goal is the discussion of the problem of mathematical interpretation of basic postulates (or `principles') of Quantum Mechanics: transitions to quantum stationary orbits, the wave-particle duality, and the probabilistic interpretation, in the context of semiclassical self-consistent Maxwell--Schrödinger equations. We discuss possible relations of these postulates to the theory of attractors of Hamiltonian nonlinear PDEs and to a new general mathematical conjecture on global attractors of G-invariant nonlinear Hamiltonian partial differential equations with a Lie symmetry group G. This conj…
In this paper, Stieltjes electrostatic model and quantum Hamilton Jacobi formalism is analogous to each other is shown. This analogy allows, the bound state problem to mimics as $n$ unit moving imaginary charges $i\hbar$, which are placed in between the two fixed imaginary charges arising due to the classical turning points of the potential. The interaction potential between $n$ unit moving imaginary charges $i\hbar$ is given by logarithm of the wave function. For an exactly solvable potential, this system attains stable equilibrium position at the zeros of the orthogonal polynomials depending…
The representation of the Bethe wave functions of certain integrable models via the Schur functions allows to apply the well-developed theory of the symmetric functions to the calculation of the thermal correlation functions. The algebraic relations arising in the calculation of the scalar products and the correlation functions are based on the Binet-Cauchy formula for the Schur functions. We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the formula for the scalar products of the Bethe state-vectors in terms of nests of the self-avoiding lattice paths constituting the so-called watermelon configur…
