Consider a one dimensional quantum mechanical particle described by the Schroedinger equation on a closed curve of length $2π$. Assume that the potential is given by the square of the curve's curvature. We show that in this case the energy of the particle can not be lower than 0.6085. We also prove that it is not lower than 1 (the conjectured optimal lower bound) for a certain class of closed curves that have an additional geometrical property
We present some simple relations between the absolute minimizers of the functional $||Du+Xu||$, where $X$ is a vector field on $R^n$, and ground state solutions to the (non-relativistic) Schroedinger equation. This article is a byproduct of the study of the more general functional $||ADu+F'(u)X||$.
We consider 2- and 3-dimensional Schrödinger or generalized Schrödinger-Pauli operators with the non-degenerating magnetic field in the open domain under certain non-degeneracy assumptions we derive pointwise spectral asymptotics. We also consider asymptotics of some related expressions (see below). For all asymptotics loops rather than periodic trajectories play important role.
In this paper we investigate the operator $H_β=-Δ-βδ(\cdot-Γ)$ in $L^{2}({\Bbb R}^{2})$, where $β>0$ and $Γ$ is a closed $C^{4}$ Jordan curve in ${\Bbb R}^{2}$. We obtain the asymptotic form of each eigenvalue of $H_β$ as $β$ tends to infinity. We also get the asymptotic form of the number of negative eigenvalues of $H_β$ in the strong coupling asymptotic regime.
We investigate nodal sets of magnetic Schroedinger operators with zero magnetic field, acting on a non simply connected domain in $\r^2$. For the case of circulation 1/2 of the magnetic vector potential around each hole in the region, we obtain a charactisation of the nodal set, and use this to obtain bounds on the multiplicity of the groundstate. For the case of one hole and a fixed electric potential, we show that the first eigenvalue takes its highest value for circulation 1/2.
We consider a class of nonlinear Schroedinger equation in three space dimensions with an attractive potential. The nonlinearity is local but rather general encompassing for the first time both subcritical and supercritical (in $L^2$) nonlinearities. We study the asymptotic stability of the nonlinear bound states, i.e. periodic in time localized in space solutions. Our result shows that all solutions with small initial data, converge to a nonlinear bound state. Therefore, the nonlinear bound states are asymptotically stable. The proof hinges on dispersive estimates that we obtain for the time d…
It is shown that the ground-state eigenvalue of a semirelativistic Hamiltonian of the form H = sqrt(m^2+p^2) + V is bounded below by the Schroedinger operator m + beta p^2 + V, for suitable beta > 0. An example is discussed.
We show that whole-line Schrödinger operators with finitely many bound states have no embedded singular spectrum. In contradistinction, we show that embedded singular spectrum is possible even when the bound states approach the essential spectrum exponentially fast. We also prove the following result for one- and two-dimensional Schrödinger operators, $H$, with bounded positive ground states: Given a potential $V$, if both $H\pm V$ are bounded from below by the ground-state energy of $H$, then $V\equiv 0$.
We prove for a class of nonlinear Schrödinger systems (NLS) having two nonlinear bound states that the (generic) large time behavior is characterized by decay of the excited state, asymptotic approach to the nonlinear ground state and dispersive radiation. Our analysis elucidates the mechanism through which initial conditions which are very near the excited state branch evolve into a (nonlinear) ground state, a phenomenon known as {\it ground state selection}. Key steps in the analysis are the introduction of a particular linearization and the derivation of a normal form which reflects the dyn…
Under certain simplifying conditions we detect monotonicity properties of the ground-state energy and the canonical-equilibrium density matrix of a spinless charged particle in the Euclidean plane subject to a perpendicular, possibly inhomogeneous magnetic field and an additional scalar potential. Firstly, we point out a simple condition warranting that the ground-state energy does not decrease when the magnetic field and/or the potential is increased pointwise. Secondly, we consider the case in which both the magnetic field and the potential are constant along one direction in the plane and g…
Based on the Caputo fractional derivative the classical, non relativistic Hamiltonian is quantized leading to a fractional Schroedinger type wave equation. The free particle solutions are localized in space. Solutions for the infinite well potential and the radial symmetric ground state solution are presented. It is shown, that the behaviour of these functions may be reproduced with a ordinary Schroeodinger equation with an additional potential, which is of the form V ~ x for $α<1$, corresponding to the confinement potential, introduced phenomenologically to the standard models for non relativ…
We introduce an antisymplectic Dirac operator and antisymplectic gamma matrices. We explore similarities between, on one hand, the Schroedinger-Lichnerowicz formula for spinor bundles in Riemannian spin geometry, which contains a zeroth-order term proportional to the Levi-Civita scalar curvature, and, on the other hand, the nilpotent, Grassmann-odd, second-order Δoperator in antisymplectic geometry, which in general has a zeroth-order term proportional to the odd scalar curvature of an arbitrary antisymplectic and torsionfree connection that is compatible with the measure density. Finally, we …
We consider the Schrödinger--Poisson--Newton equations for crystals with a cubic lattice and one ion per cell. We linearize this dynamics at the ground state and introduce a novel class of the ion charge densities which provide the stability of the linearized dynamics. This is the first result on linear stability for crystals. Our key result is the {\it energy positivity} for the Bloch generators of the linearized dynamics under a Wiener-type condition on the ion charge density. We also assume an additional condition which cancels the negative contribution caused by electrostatic instability. …
We propose a technical reformulation of the measurement problem of quantum mechanics, which is based on the postulate that the final state of a measurement is classical. Unlike the usual formulation (in which the post-measurement state is a unit vector in Hilbert space), our version actually opens the possibility of admitting a purely technical solution within the confines of conventional quantum theory (as opposed to solutions that either modify this theory, or introduce unusual and controversial interpretative rules and/or ontologies). To that effect, we recall a remarkable phenomenon in the…
This article is a review of results on the nonlinear Schroedinger / Gross-Pitaevskii equation (NLS / GP). Nonlinear bound states and aspects of their stability theory are discussed from variational and bifurcation perspectives. Nonlinear bound states, in the particular cases where the potential is a single-well, double-well potential and periodic potential, are discussed in detail. We then discuss particle-like dynamics of solitary wave solutions interacting with a potential over a large, but finite, time interval. Finally we turn to the very long time behavior of solutions. We focus on the im…
In this paper, we show the that the ground state energy of the one dimensional Discrete Random Schroedinger Operator with Bernoulli Potential is controlled asymptotically as the system size N goes to infinity by the random variable \ell_N, the length the longest consecutive sequence of sites on the lattice with potential equal to zero. Specifically, we will show that for almost every realization of the potential the ground state energy behaves asymptotically as $\frac{π^2}{\ell_N+1)^2}$ in the sense that the ratio of the quantities goes to one.
We analyze two-dimensional Schrödinger operators with the potential $|xy|^p - λ(x^2+y^2)^{p/(p+2)}$ where $p\ge 1$ and $λ\ge 0$, which exhibit an abrupt change of its spectral properties at a critical value of the coupling constant $λ$. We show that in the supercritical case the spectrum covers the whole real axis. In contrast, for $λ$ below the critical value the spectrum is purely discrete and we establish a Lieb-Thirring-type bound on its moments. In the critical case the essential spectrum covers the positive halfline while the negative spectrum can be only discrete, we demonstrate numeric…
We define a Schrödinger operator on the half-space with a discontinuous magnetic field having a piecewise-constant strength and a uniform direction. Motivated by applications in the theory of superconductivity, we study the infimum of the spectrum of the operator. We give sufficient conditions on the strength and the direction of the magnetic field such that the aforementioned infimum is an eigenvalue of a reduced model operator on the half-plane. We use the Schrödinger operator on the half-space to study a new semiclassical problem in bounded domains of the space, considering a magnetic Neuma…
We consider the ground state of an atom in the framework of non-relativistic qed. We show that the ground state as well as the ground state energy are analytic functions of the coupling constant which couples to the vector potential, under the assumption that the atomic Hamiltonian has a non-degenerate ground state. Moreover, we show that the corresponding expansion coefficients are precisely the coefficients of the associated Raleigh-Schroedinger series. As a corollary we obtain that in a scaling limit where the ultraviolet cutoff is of the order of the Rydberg energy the ground state and the…
We consider the integrable dilute Temperley-Lieb (dTL) O($n=1$) loop model on a semi-infinite strip of finite width $L$. In the analogy with the Temperley-Lieb (TL) O($n=1$) loop model the ground state eigenvector of the transfer matrix is studied by means of a set of $q$-difference equations, sometimes called the $q$KZ equations. We compute some ground state components of the transfer matrix of the dTL model, and show that all ground state components can be recovered for arbitrary $L$ using the $q$KZ equation and certain recurrence relation. The computations are done for generic open boundary…
We consider the qKZ equations based on the two boundaries Temperley Lieb algebra. We construct their solution in the case $s=q^{-3/2}$ using a recursion relation. At the combinatorial point $q^{1/2}= e^{-2πi/3}$ the solution reduces to the ground state of the dense O(1) loop model on a strip with open boundary conditions. We present an alternative construction of such ground state based on the knowledge of the ground state of the same model with mixed boundary conditions and prove that the sum rule as of its components is given by the product of four symplectic characters.
This paper proposes a very simple perturbative technique to calculate the low-lying eigenvalues and eigenstates of a parity-symmetric quantum-mechanical potential. The technique is to solve the time-independent Schroedinger eigenvalue problem as a perturbation series in which the perturbation parameter is the energy itself. Unlike nearly all perturbation series for physical problems, for the ground state this perturbation expansion is convergent and, even though the ground-state energy is in general not small compared with 1, the perturbative results are numerically accurate. The perturbation …
Conjectures for analytical expressions for correlations in the dense O$(1)$ loop model on semi infinite square lattices are given. We have obtained these results for four types of boundary conditions. Periodic and reflecting boundary conditions have been considered before. We give many new conjectures for these two cases and review some of the existing results. We also consider boundaries on which loops can end. We call such boundaries ''open''. We have obtained expressions for correlations when both boundaries are open, and one is open and the other one is reflecting. Also, we formulate a con…
We address a number of conjectures about the ground state O(1) loop model, computing in particular two infinite series of partial sums of its entries and relating them to the enumeration of plane partitions. Our main tool is the use of integral formulae for a polynomial solution of the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation.
The sums of components of the ground states of the O(1) loop model on a cylinder or of the XXZ quantum spin chain at Delta=-1/2 (of size L) are expressed in terms of combinatorial numbers. The methods include the introduction of spectral parameters and the use of integrability, a mapping from size L to L+1, and knot-theoretic skein relations.
Hanging about a hypothetical connections between the ground state vector for some special spin systems and the alternating-sign matrices, we have found a numerical evidence for the fact that the numbers of the states of the fully packed loop model with fixed link-patterns coincide with the components of the ground state vector of the dense O$(1)$ loop model considered by Batchelor, de Gier and Nienhuis. Our conjecture generalizes in a sense the conjecture of Bosley and Fidkowski, refined by Cohn and Propp, and proved by Wieland.
Integrable loop models associated with higher representations (spin k/2) of U_q(sl(2)) are investigated at the point q=-e^{iπ/(k+2)}. The ground state eigenvalue and eigenvectors are described. Introducing inhomogeneities into the models allows to derive a sum rule for the ground state entries.
