We compute averages of products and ratios of characteristic polynomials associated with Orthogonal, Unitary, and Symplectic Ensembles of Random Matrix Theory. The pfaffian/determinantal formulas for these averages are obtained, and the bulk scaling asymptotic limits are found for ensembles with Gaussian weights. Classical results for the correlation functions of the random matrix ensembles and their bulk scaling limits are deduced from these formulas by a simple computation.
We employ a discrete approximation method: the problem is solved for discrete analogues of random matrix ensembles originating from representation theory, and then a limit transition is performed. Exact pfaffian/determinantal formulas for the discrete averages are proved using standard tools of linear algebra; no application of orthogonal or skew-orthogonal polynomials is needed.
We show that the averaged characteristic polynomial and the averaged inverse characteristic polynomial, associated with Hermitian matrices whose elements perform a random walk in the space of complex numbers, satisfy certain partial differential, diffusion-like, equations. These equations are valid for matrices of arbitrary size. Their solutions can be given an integral representation that allows for a simple study of their asymptotic behaviors for a broad range of initial conditions.
We consider asymptotics of ratios of random characteristic polynomials associated with orthogonal polynomial ensembles. Under some natural conditions on the measure in the definition of the orthogonal polynomial ensemble we establish a universality limit for these ratios.
We study correlation functions of the characteristic polynomials in coupled matrix models based on the Schur polynomial expansion, which manifests their determinantal structure.
Formulae of Plancherel-Rotach type are established for the average characteristic polynomials of certain Hermitian products of rectangular Ginibre random matrices on the region of zeros. These polynomials form a general class of multiple orthogonal hypergeometric polynomials generalizing the classical Laguerre polynomials. The proofs are based on a multivariate version of the complex method of saddle points. After suitable rescaling the asymptotic zero distributions for the polynomials are studied and shown to coincide with the Fuss-Catalan distributions. Moreover, introducing appropriate coor…
Polynomial ensembles are a sub-class of probability measures within determinantal point processes. Examples include products of independent random matrices, with applications to Lyapunov exponents, and random matrices with an external field, that may serve as schematic models of quantum field theories with temperature. We first analyse expectation values of ratios of an equal number of characteristic polynomials in general polynomial ensembles. Using Schur polynomials we show that polynomial ensembles constitute Giambelli compatible point processes, leading to a determinant formula for such ra…
We evaluate averages involving characteristic polynomials, inverse characteristic polynomials and ratios of characteristic polynomials for a $N\times N$ random matrix taken from a $L$-deformed Chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble with an external source $Ω$. Relation to a recently studied statistics of bi-orthogonal eigenvectors in the complex Ginibre ensemble, see Y.V. Fyodorov arXiv:1710.04699, is briefly discussed as a motivation to study asymptotics of these objects in the case of external source proportional to the identity matrix. In particular, for an associated 'complex bulk/chiral edge' s…
The paper continues previous works which study the behavior of second correlation function of characteristic polynomials of the special case of $n\times n$ one-dimensional Gaussian Hermitian random band matrices, when the covariance of the elements is determined by the matrix $J=(-W^2\triangle+1)^{-1}$. Applying the transfer matrix approach, we study the case when the bandwidth $W$ is proportional to the threshold $\sqrt{n}$
We prove that the asymptotic behavior of the second mixed moment of the characteristic polynomials of the 1D Gaussian real symmetric band matrices coincides with those for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE). Here we adapt the approach of T. Shcherbina'14, where the case of 1D Hermitian random band matrices was considered.
We study the special case of $n\times n$ 1D Gaussian Hermitian random band matrices, when the covariance of the elements is determined by $J=(-W^2\triangle+1)^{-1}$. Assuming that the band width $W\ll \sqrt{n}$, we prove that the limit of the normalized second mixed moment of characteristic polynomials (as $W, n\to \infty$) is equal to one, and so it does not coincides with those for GUE. This complements the previous result of T. Shcherbina and proves the expected crossover for 1D Hermitian random band matrices at $W\sim \sqrt{n}$ on the level of characteristic polynomials.
We compute the average characteristic polynomial of the hermitised product of $M$ real or complex Wigner matrices of size $N\times N$ and the average of the characteristic polynomial of a product of $M$ such Wigner matrices times the characteristic polynomial of the conjugate matrix. Surprisingly, the results agree with that of the product of $M$ real or complex Ginibre matrices at finite-$N$, which have i.i.d. Gaussian entries. For the latter the average characteristic polynomial yields the orthogonal polynomial for the singular values of the product matrix, whereas the product of the two cha…
We study the averaged products of characteristic polynomials for the Gaussian and Laguerre $β$-ensembles with external source, and prove Pearcey-type phase transitions for particular full rank perturbations of source. The phases are characterised by determining the explicit functional forms of the scaled limits of the averaged products of characteristic polynomials, which are given as certain multidimensional integrals, with dimension equal to the number of products.
We calculate the autocorrelation function for the characteristic polynomial of a random matrix in the microscopic scaling regime. While results fitting this description have be proved before, we will cover all values of inverse temperature $β\in (0,\infty)$. The method also differs from prior work, relying on matrix models introduced by Killip and Nenciu.
Following the work of Conrey, Rubinstein and Snaith and Forrester and Witte we examine a mixed moment of the characteristic polynomial and its derivative for matrices from the unitary group U(N) (also known as the CUE) and relate the moment to the solution of a Painleve differential equation. We also calculate a simple form for the asymptotic behaviour of moments of logarithmic derivatives of these characteristic polynomials evaluated near the unit circle.
In this note we prove that suitable positive powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of a Haar distributed random unitary matrix converge in law, as the size of the matrix tends to infinity, to a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure once correctly normalized. We prove this in the whole $L^1$- or subcritical phase of the chaos measure.
This work computes the asymptotics of the non-integer moments of the logarithmic derivative of characteristic polynomials of matrices from the $SO(2N+1)$ ensemble. It follows from work of Alvarez and Snaith who computed the asymptotics of the integer moments of the same statistic over both $SO(N)$ ensembles as well as the $USp(2N)$ ensemble.
We study the characteristic polynomial of Haar distributed random unitary matrices. We show that after a suitable normalization, as one increases the size of the matrix, powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial as well as powers of the exponential of its argument converge in law to a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure for small enough real powers. This establishes a connection between random matrix theory and the theory of Gaussian multiplicative chaos.
