The application of the Legendre transformation to a hyperregular Lagrangian system results in a Hamiltonian vector field generated by a Hamiltonian defined on the phase space of the mechanical system. The Legendre transformation in its usual interpretation can not be applied to homogeneous Lagrangians found in relativistic mechanics. The dynamics of relativistic systems must be formulated in terms of implicit differential equations in the phase space and not in terms of Hamiltonian vector fields. The constrained Hamiltonian systems introduced by Dirac [1] are not general enough to cover some important cases. We formulate a geometric framework which permits Lagrangian and Hamiltonian descriptions of the dynamics of a wide class of mechanical systems. Lagrangians and Hamiltonians are presented as families of functions. The Legendre transformation and the inverse Legendre transformation are described as transitions between these families. Two examples, the dynamics of a relativistic particle and a space-time formulation of geometric optics (relativistic massless particle), are given.
We are proposing Tulczyjew's triple for contact dynamics. The most important ingredients of the triple, namely symplectic diffeomorphisms, special symplectic manifolds, and Morse families, are generalized to the contact framework. These geometries permit us to determine so-called generating family (obtained by merging a special contact manifold and a Morse family) for a Legendrian submanifold. Contact Hamiltonian and Lagrangian Dynamics are recast as Legendrian submanifolds of the tangent contact manifold. In this picture, the Legendre transformation is determined to be a passage between two d…
We study the connection between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian descriptions of closed/open dynamics, for a collection of particles with quadratic interaction (closed system) and a sub-collection of particles with linear damping (open system). We consider both continuous and discrete versions of mechanics. We define the Damping Reduction as the mapping from the equations of motion of the closed system to those of the open one. As variational instruments for the obtention of these equations we use the Hamilton's principle (closed dynamics) and Lagrange-d'Alembert principle (open dynamics). We establ…
In this paper, we introduce a geometric description of contact Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems on Lie algebroids in the framework of contact geometry, using the theory of prolongations. We discuss the relation between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian settings through a convenient notion of Legendre transformation. We also discuss the Hamilton-Jacobi problem in this framework and introduce the notion of a Legendrian Lie subalgebroid of a contact Lie algebroid.
Generalized span categories provide a framework for formalizing mathematical models of open systems in classical mechanics. We introduce categories $\mathsf{LagSy}$ and $\mathsf{HamSy}$ that respectively provide a categorical framework for the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian descriptions of open classical mechanical systems. The morphisms of $\mathsf{LagSy}$ and $\mathsf{HamSy}$ correspond to such open systems, and composition of morphisms models the construction of systems from subsystems. The Legendre transformation gives rise to a functor from $\mathsf{LagSy}$ to $\mathsf{HamSy}$ that translates…
We discuss Lagrangian and Hamiltonian field theories that are invariant under a symmetry group. We apply the polysymplectic reduction theorem for both types of field equations and we investigate aspects of the corresponding reconstruction process. We identify the polysymplectic structures that lie at the basis of cotangent bundle reduction and Routh reduction in this setting and we relate them by means of the Routhian function and its associated Legendre transformation. We end the paper with examples that illustrate the applicability of our results.
In previous papers, a geometric framework has been developed to describe non-conservative field theories as a kind of modified Lagrangian and Hamiltonian field theories. This approach is that of $k$-contact Hamiltonian systems, which is based on the $k$-symplectic formulation of field theories as well as on contact geometry. In this work we present the Skinner--Rusk unified setting for these kinds of theories, which encompasses both the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms into a single picture. This unified framework is specially useful when dealing with singular systems, since: (i) it incor…
We review the covariant canonical formalism initiated by D'Adda, Nelson and Regge in 1985, and extend it to include a definition of form-Poisson brackets (FPB) for geometric theories coupled to $p$-forms, gauging free differential algebras. The form-Legendre transformation and the form-Hamilton equations are derived from a $d$-form Lagrangian with $p$-form dynamical fields $ϕ$. Momenta are defined as derivatives of the Lagrangian with respect to the "velocities" $dϕ$ and no preferred time direction is used. Action invariance under infinitesimal form-canonical transformations can be studied in …
We present a complete theory of higher-order autonomous contact mechanics, which allows us to describe higher-order dynamical systems with dissipation. The essential tools for the theory are the extended higher-order tangent bundles, ${\rm T}^kQ\times{\mathbb R}$, whose geometric structures are previously introduced in order to state the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms for these kinds of systems, including their variational formulation. The variational principle, the contact forms, and the geometric dynamical equations are obtained by using those structures and generalizing the standard …
In this paper, we propose a discrete Hamilton--Jacobi theory for (discrete) Hamiltonian dynamics defined on a (discrete) contact manifold. To this end, we first provide a novel geometric Hamilton--Jacobi theory for continuous contact Hamiltonian dynamics. Then, rooting on the discrete contact Lagrangian formulation, we obtain the discrete equations for Hamiltonian dynamics by the discrete Legendre transformation. Based on the discrete contact Hamilton equation, we construct a discrete Hamilton--Jacobi equation for contact Hamiltonian dynamics. We show how the discrete Hamilton--Jacobi equation…
