We review the relationship between positive operator-valued measures (POVMs) in quantum measurement theory and asymptotic morphisms in the C*-algebra E-theory of Connes and Higson. The theory of asymptotic spectral measures, as introduced by Martinez and Trout (CMP 226), is integrally related to positive asymptotic morphisms on locally compact spaces via an asymptotic Riesz Representation Theorem. Examples and applications to quantum physics, including quantum noise models, semiclassical limits, pure spin one-half systems and quantum information processing will also be discussed.
In this paper we provide new asymptotic estimates of the Floquet exponents of Schrödinger operators on the circle. By the same techniques, known asymptotic estimates of various others spectral quantities are improved.
We prove a Tauberian theorem for singular values of noncommuting operators which allows us to prove exact asymptotic formulas in noncommutative geometry at a high degree of generality. We explain how, via the Birman--Schwinger principle, these asymptotics imply that a semiclassical Weyl law holds for many interesting noncommutative examples. In Connes' notation for quantized calculus, we prove that for a wide class of $p$-summable spectral triples $(\mathcal{A},H,D)$ and self-adjoint $V \in \mathcal{A}$, there holds \[\lim_{h\downarrow 0} h^p\mathrm{Tr}(χ_{(-\infty,0)}(h^2D^2+V)) = \int V_-^{\…
We consider 2- and 3-dimensional Schrödinger or generalized Schrödinger-Pauli operators with the non-degenerating magnetic field in the open domain under certain non-degeneracy assumptions we derive pointwise spectral asymptotics. We also consider asymptotics of some related expressions (see below). For all asymptotics loops rather than periodic trajectories play important role.
We consider two dimensional system governed by the Hamiltonian with delta interaction supported by two concentric circles separated by distance $d$. We analyze the asymptotics of the discrete eigenvalues for $d \to 0$ as well as for $d\to \infty$.
We study the relationship between POV-measures in quantum theory and asymptotic morphisms in the operator algebra E-theory of Connes-Higson. This is done by introducing the theory of "asymptotic" PV-measures and their integral correspondence with positive asymptotic morphisms on locally compact spaces. Examples and applications involving various aspects of quantum physics, including quantum noise models, semiclassical limits, strong deformation quantizations, and pure half-spin particles, are also discussed.
Let $P$ be an operator of Dirac type and let $D=P^2$ be the associated operator of Laplace type. We impose spectral boundary conditions and study the leading heat content coefficients for $D$.
We study the short time heat content asymptotics for spectral boundary conditions. The heat content coefficients are shown to be non-local and some preliminary results concerning the structure of the first few terms are given.
Let $P$ be an operator of Dirac type on a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary. We impose spectral boundary conditions and study the asymptotics of the heat trace of the associated operator of Laplace type.
We consider a magnetic laplacian P(A) on the Poincaré half-plane, when the magnetic field dA is infinite at infinity such that P(A) has pure discret spectrum. We give the asymptotic behavior of the counting function of the eigenvalues.
For a two-parameter family of Jacobi matrices exhibiting first-order spectral phase transitions, we prove discreteness of the spectrum in the positive real axis when the parameters are in one of the transition boundaries. To this end we develop a method for obtaining uniform asymptotics, with respect to the spectral parameter, of the generalized eigenvectors. Our technique can be applied to a wide range of Jacobi matrices.
Let $P$ be an operator of Dirac type on a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary. We impose spectral boundary conditions and study the asymptotics of the heat trace of the associated operator of Laplace type.
We prove a two-term Weyl-type asymptotic formula for sums of eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian in a bounded open set with Lipschitz boundary. Moreover, in the case of a convex domain we obtain a universal bound which correctly reproduces the first two terms in the asymptotics.
We consider metric perturbations of the Landau Hamiltonian. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the discrete spectrum of the perturbed operator near the Landau levels, for perturbations with power-like decay, exponential decay or compact support.
Precise asymptotics known for the Green's function of the Laplace operator have found their analogs for periodic elliptic operators of the second order at and below the bottom of the spectrum. Due to the band-gap structure of the spectra of such operators, the question arises whether similar results can be obtained near or at the edges of spectral gaps. As the result of this work shows, this is possible at a spectral edge in dimensions d>2.
Motivated by the earlier results, we study theoretically and numerically the asymptotics and the monodromy of the quasi-exactly solvable part of the spectrum of the quasi-exactly solvable quartic introduced by C.~M.~Bender and S.~Boettcher. In particular, we formulate a conjecture on the coincidence of the asymptotic shape of the configuration of the branching points of the latter quartic with the asymptotic shape of zeros of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomials recently described and present its (conjectural) alternative description. Further we present a numerical study of the spectral monodro…
We consider the self-adjoint third order operator with 1-periodic coefficients on the real line. The spectrum of the operator is absolutely continuous and covers the real line. We determine the high energy asymptotics of the periodic, anti-periodic eigenvalues and of the branch points of the Lyapunov function. Furthermore, in the case of small coefficients we show that either whole spectrum has multiplicity one or the spectrum has multiplicity one except for a small spectral nonempty interval with multiplicity three. In the last case the asymptotics of this small interval is determined.
The first two terms in the large $N$ asymptotic expansion of the $β$ moment of the characteristic polynomial for the Gaussian and Laguerre $β$-ensembles are calculated. This is used to compute the asymptotic expansion of the spectral density in these ensembles, in the exponentially small region outside the leading support, up to terms $o(1)$ . The leading form of the right tail of the distribution of the largest eigenvalue is given by the density in this regime. It is demonstrated that there is a scaling from this, to the right tail asymptotics for the distribution of the largest eigenvalue at…
We consider a 3-dimensional Dirac operator H_0 with non-constant magnetic field of constant direction, perturbed by a sign-definite matrix-valued potential V decaying fast enough at infinity. Then we determine asymptotics, as the energy goes to +m and -m, of the spectral shift function for the pair (H_0,H_0+V). We obtain, as a by-product, a generalised version of Levinson's Theorem relating the eigenvalues asymptotics of H_0+V near +m and -m to the scattering phase shift for the pair (H_0,H_0+V).
We find the high energy asymptotics for the singular Weyl--Titchmarsh m-functions and the associated spectral measures of perturbed spherical Schrödinger operators (also known as Bessel operators). We apply this result to establish an improved local Borg-Marchenko theorem for Bessel operators as well as uniqueness theorems for the radial quantum scattering problem with nontrivial angular momentum.
Sharp spectral asymptotics for multidimensional Schroedinger operators with the strong magnetic field are derived under rather weak smoothness conditions. I assume that magnetic intensity matrix has constant defect r>0 at each point. In comparison with version 1 of 5.5 year ago this version contains more results (we also study some degenerations), improvements and some minor corrections.
We prove the complete asymptotic expansion of the spectral function (the integral kernel of the spectral projection) of a Schrodinger operator $H=-Δ+b$ acting in $R^d$ when the potential $b$ is real and either smooth periodic, or generic quasi-periodic (finite linear combination of exponentials), or belongs to a wide class of almost-periodic functions.
This paper is concerned with the spectral analysis of a Hamiltonian with a $δ$-interaction supported along a broken line with angle $θ$. The bound states with energy slightly below the threshold of the essential spectrum are estimated in the semiclassical regime $θ\to 0$.
We prove that smooth Wigner-Weyl spectral sums at an energy level $E$ exhibit Airy scaling asymptotics across the classical energy surface $Σ_E$. This was proved earlier by the authors for the isotropic harmonic oscillator and the proof is extended in this article to all quantum Hamiltonians $-\hbar^2 Δ+ V$ where $V$ is a confining potential with at most quadratic growth at infinity. The main tools are the Herman-Kluk initial value parametrix for the propagator and the Chester-Friedman-Ursell normal form for complex phases with a one-dimensional cubic degeneracy. This gives a rigorous account …
The goal of this paper is manyfold. Firstly, we want to give a short introduction to the Bochner Laplacian and explain why it acts locally as a magnetic Laplacian. Secondly, given a confining magnetic field, we use Agmon-like estimates to reduce its spectral study to magnetic Laplacians, in the semiclassical limit. Finally, we use this to translate already-known spectral asymptotics for the magnetic Laplacian to the Bochner Laplacian.
We consider differential operators defined as Friedrichs extensions of quadratic forms with non-smooth coefficients. We prove a two term optimal asymptotic for the Riesz means of these operators and thereby also reprove an optimal Weyl law under certain regularity conditions. The methods used are then extended to consider more general admissible operators perturbed by a rough differential operator and obtaining optimal spectral asymptotics again under certain regularity conditions. For the Weyl law we assume the coefficients are differentiable with Hölder continuous derivatives and for the Rie…
In the field of orthogonal polynomials theory, the classical Markov theorem shows that for determinate moment problems the spectral measure is under control of the polynomials asymptotics. The situation is completely different for indeterminate moment problems, in which case the interesting spectral measures are to be constructed using Nevanlinna theory. Nevertheless it is interesting to observe that some spectral measures can still be obtained from weaker forms of Markov theorem. The exposition will be illustrated by orthogonal polynomials related to elliptic functions: in the determinate cas…
We derive asymptotic expansion for the spectrum of Hamiltonians with a strong attractive $δ'$ interaction supported by a smooth surface in $\R^3$, either infinite and asymptotically planar, or compact and closed. Its second term is found to be determined by a Schrödinger type operator with an effective potential expressed in terms of the interaction support curvatures.
In this paper we study spectral properties of adjacency and Laplace operators on percolation subgraphs of Cayley graphs of amenable, finitely generated groups. In particular we describe the asymptotic behaviour of the integrated density of states (spectral distribution function) of these random Hamiltonians near the spectral minimum. The first part of the note discusses various aspects of the quantum percolation model, subsequently we formulate a series of new results, and finally we outline the strategy used to prove our main theorem.
This paper summarizes the contents of a plenary talk at the Pan African Congress of Mathematics held in Rabat in July 2017. We provide a survey of recent results on spectral properties of Schrödinger operators with singular interactions supported by manifolds of codimension one and of Robin billiards with the focus on the geometrically induced discrete spectrum and its asymptotic expansions in term of the model parameters.
We investigate Laplacians on supercritical bond-percolation graphs with different boundary conditions at cluster borders. The integrated density of states of the Dirichlet Laplacian is found to exhibit a Lifshits tail at the lower spectral edge, while that of the Neumann Laplacian shows a van Hove asymptotics, which results from the percolating cluster. At the upper spectral edge, the behaviour is reversed.
We prove equivariant spectral asymptotics for $ h$-pseudodifferential operators for compact orthogonal group actions generalizing results of El-Houakmi and Helffer (1991) and Cassanas (2006). Using recent results for certain oscillatory integrals with singular critical sets (Ramacher 2010) we can deduce a weak equivariant Weyl law. Furthermore, we can prove a complete asymptotic expansion for the Gutzwiller trace formula without any additional condition on the group action by a suitable generalization of the dynamical assumptions on the Hamilton flow.
In this paper, we obtain the long-time asymptotics of complex mKdV equation via Defit-Zhou method (Non-linear steepest descent method). The Cauchy problem of complex mKdV equation is transformed into the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem on the basis of the Lax pair and the scattering matrix. After that Riemann-Hilbert problems are converted through a decomposition of the matrix-valued spectral function and factorizations of the jump matrix for Riemann-Hilbert problem. Finally, by solving the last model problem, the long-time asymptotics of complex mKdV equation are derived.

We study the renormalization group flow for the Higgs self coupling in the presence of gravitational correction terms. We show that the resulting equation is equivalent to a singular linear ODE, which has explicit solutions in terms of hypergeometric functions. We discuss the implications of this model with gravitational corrections on the Higgs mass estimates in particle physics models based on the spectral action functional.
We consider Laplace operators on metric graphs, networks of one-dimensional line segments (bonds), with matching conditions at the vertices that make the operator self-adjoint. Such quantum graphs provide a simple model of quantum mechanics in a classically chaotic system with multiple scales corresponding to the lengths of the bonds. For graph Laplacians we briefly report results for the spectral determinant, vacuum energy and heat kernel asymptotics of general graphs in terms of the vertex matching conditions.
Based on continuity properties of the de Branges correspondence, we develop a new approach to study the high-energy behavior of Weyl-Titchmarsh and spectral functions of $2\times2$ first order canonical systems. Our results improve several classical results and solve open problems posed by previous authors. Furthermore, they are applied to radial Dirac and radial Schrödinger operators as well as to Krein strings and generalized indefinite strings.
We study properties of spectral minimal partitions of metric graphs within the framework recently introduced in [Kennedy et al, Calc. Var. 60 (2021), 61]. We provide sharp lower and upper estimates for minimal partition energies in different classes of partitions; while the lower bounds are reminiscent of the classic isoperimetric inequalities for metric graphs, the upper bounds are more involved and mirror the combinatorial structure of the metric graph as well. Combining them, we deduce that these spectral minimal energies also satisfy a Weyl-type asymptotic law similar to the well-known one…
We consider self-adjoint realizations of a second-order elliptic differential expression on ${\mathbb R}^n$ with singular interactions of $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-type supported on a compact closed smooth hypersurface in ${\mathbb R}^n$. In our main results we prove spectral asymptotics formulae with refined remainder estimates for the singular values of the resolvent difference between the standard self-adjoint realizations and the operators with a $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-interaction, respectively. Our technique makes use of general pseudodifferential methods, classical results on spectral asymptotics o…
We consider a $\mathbb{R}$-extension of one dimensional uniformly expanding open dynamical systems and prove a new explicit estimate for the asymptotic spectral gap. To get these results, we use a new application of a "global normal form" for the dynamical system, a "semiclassical expression beyond the Ehrenfest time" that expresses the transfer operator at large time as a sum over rank one operators (each is associated to one orbit). In this paper we establish the validity of the so-called "diagonal approximation" up to twice the local Ehrenfest time.
We perform quantitative spectral analysis of the self-adjoint Dirichlet Laplacian $\mathsf{H}$ on an unbounded, radially symmetric (generalized) parabolic layer $\mathcal{P}\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. It was known before that $\mathsf{H}$ has an infinite number of eigenvalues below the threshold of its essential spectrum. In the present paper, we find the discrete spectrum asymptotics for $\mathsf{H}$ by means of a consecutive reduction to the analogous asymptotic problem for an effective one-dimensional Schrödinger operator on the half-line with the potential the behaviour of which far away from th…
We study Schrödinger operators with Floquet boundary conditions on flat tori obtaining a spectral result giving an asymptotic expansion of all the eigenvalues. The expansion is in $λ^{-δ}$ with $δ\in(0,1)$ for most of the eigenvalues $λ$ (stable eigenvalues), while it is a "directional expansion" for the remaining eigenvalues (unstable eigenvalues). The proof is based on a structure theorem which is a variant of the one proved in \cite{PS10,PS12} and on a new iterative quasimode argument.
Precise asymptotics known for the Green function of the Laplacian have found their analogs for bounded below periodic elliptic operators of the second-order below and at the bottom of the spectrum. Due to the band-gap structure of the spectra of such operators, the question arises whether similar results can be obtained near or at the edges of spectral gaps. In a previous work, two of the authors considered the case of a spectral edge. The main result of this article is finding such asymptotics near a gap edge, for "generic" periodic elliptic operators of second-order with real coefficients in…
For non-critical almost Mathieu operators with Diophantine frequency, we establish exponential asymptotics on the size of spectral gaps, and show that the spectrum is homogeneous. We also prove the homogeneity of the spectrum for Schödinger operators with (measure-theoretically) typical quasi-periodic analytic potentials and fixed strong Diophantine frequency. As applications, we show the discrete version of Deift's conjecture \cite{Deift, Deift17} for subcritical analytic quasi-periodic initial data and solve a series of open problems of Damanik-Goldstein et al \cite{BDGL, DGL1, dgsv, Go} and…
We consider the Schroedinger operator with a complex delta interaction supported by two parallel hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space of any dimension. We analyse spectral properties of the system in the limit when the distance between the hypersurfaces tends to zero. We establish the norm-resolvent convergence to a limiting operator and derive first-order corrections for the corresponding eigenvalues.
This article concerns new off-diagonal estimates on the remainder and its derivatives in the pointwise Weyl law on a compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifold. As an application, we prove that near any non self-focal point, the scaling limit of the spectral projector of the Laplacian onto frequency windows of constant size is a normalized Bessel function depending only on n.
The Mathieu operator {equation*} L(y)=-y"+2a \cos{(2x)}y, \quad a\in \mathbb{C},\;a\neq 0, {equation*} considered with periodic or anti-periodic boundary conditions has, close to $n^2$ for large enough $n$, two periodic (if $n$ is even) or anti-periodic (if $n$ is odd) eigenvalues $λ_n^-$, $λ_n^+$. For fixed $a$, we show that {equation*} λ_n^+ - λ_n^-= \pm \frac{8(a/4)^n}{[(n-1)!]^2} [1 - \frac{a^2}{4n^3}+ O (\frac{1}{n^4})], \quad n\rightarrow\infty. {equation*} This result extends the asymptotic formula of Harrell-Avron-Simon, by providing more asymptotic terms.

We investigate the spectrum of three-dimensional Schrödinger operators with $δ$-interactions of constant strength supported on circular cones. As shown in earlier works, such operators have infinitely many eigenvalues below the threshold of the essential spectrum. We focus on spectral properties for sharp cones, that is when the cone aperture goes to zero, and we describe the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues and of the eigenvalue counting function. A part of the results are given in terms of numerical constants appearing as solutions of transcendental equations involving modified Bessel …
In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of the spectral function corresponding to the lower part of the spectrum of the Kodaira Laplacian on high tensor powers of a holomorphic line bundle. This implies a full asymptotic expansion of this function on the set where the curvature of the line bundle is non-degenerate. As application we obtain the Bergman kernel asymptotics for adjoint semi-positive line bundles over complete Kaehler manifolds, on the set where the curvature is positive. We also prove the asymptotics for big line bundles endowed with singular Hermitian metrics with strictl…
Let -Δdenote the Dirichlet Laplace operator on a bounded open set in \mathbb{R}^d. We study the sum of the negative eigenvalues of the operator -h^2 Δ- 1 in the semiclassical limit h \to 0+. We give a new proof that yields not only the first term of the asymptotic formula but also the second term involving the surface area of the boundary of the set. The proof is valid under weak smoothness assumptions on the boundary.
We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator $H^h$, depending on a semiclassical parameter $h>0$, on a compact Riemannian manifold. We assume that there is no electric field. We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the intensity of the magnetic field $b$ is strictly positive. We give a survey of the results on asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of the operator $H^h$ in the semiclassical limit.
In this article we consider asymptotics for the spectral function of Schrödinger operators on the real line. Let $P:L^2(\mathbb{R})\to L^2(\mathbb{R})$ have the form $$ P:=-\tfrac{d^2}{dx^2}+W, $$ where $W$ is a self-adjoint first order differential operator with certain modified almost periodic structure. We show that the kernel of the spectral projector, $\mathbb{1}_{(-\infty,λ^2]}(P)$ has a full asymptotic expansion in powers of $λ$. In particular, our class of potentials $W$ is stable under perturbation by formally self-adjoint first order differential operators with smooth, compactly supp…
We rigorously derive explicit formulae for the pair correlation function of the ground state of the free Fermi gas in the thermodynamic limit for general geometries of the macroscopic regions occupied by the particles and arbitrary dimension. As a consequence we also establish the asymptotic validity of the local density approximation for the corresponding exchange energy. At constant density these formulae are universal and do not depend on the geometry of the underlying macroscopic domain. In order to identify the correlation effects in the thermodynamic limit, we prove a local Weyl law for …
A new approach to the proof of the Arrhenius formula of kinetic theory is proposed. We prove this formula starting from the equation of diffusion in a potential. We put this diffusion equation in the form of evolutionary equation generated by some Schroedinger operator. We show that the Arrhenius formula for the rate of over the barrier transitions follows from the formula for the rate of quantum tunnel transitions for the considered Schroedinger operator. Relation of the proposed approach and the Witten method of the proof of the Morse inequalities is discussed. In our approach the Witten spe…
We investigate the high-energy eigenvalue asymptotics quantum graphs consisting of the vertices and edges of the five Platonic solids considering two different types of the vertex coupling. One is the standard $δ$-condition, the other is the preferred-orientation one introduced in [ET18]. The aim is to provide another illustration of the fact that the asymptotic properties of the latter coupling are determined by the vertex parity by showing that the octahedron graph differs in this respect from the other four for which the edges at high energies effectively disconnect and the spectrum approac…
