The existence of the scaling limit and its universality, for correlations between zeros of {\it Gaussian} random polynomials, or more generally, {\it Gaussian} random sections of powers of a line bundle over a compact manifold has been proved in a great generality in the works [BBL2], [Ha], [BD], [BSZ1]-[BSZ4], and others. In the present work we prove the existence of the scaling limit for a class of {\it non-Gaussian} random polynomials. Our main result is that away from the origin the scaling limit exists and is universal, so that it does not depend on the distribution of the coefficients. At the origin the scaling limit is not universal, and we find a crossover from the nonuniversal asymptotics of the density of the probability distribution of zeros at the origin to the universal one away from the origin.
We obtain large n asymptotics for products of powers of the absolute values of the characteristic polynomials in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of n\times n matrices. Our results can also be interpreted as asymptotics of the determinant of a Hankel matrix whose symbol is supported on the real line and possesses power-like (Fisher-Hartwig) singularities.
Karabulut and Sibert (\textit{J. Math. Phys}. \textbf{38} (9), 4815 (1997)) have constructed an orthogonal set of functions from linear combinations of equally spaced Gaussians. In this paper we show that they are actually eigenfunctions of a q-oscillator in coordinate representation. We also reinterpret the coordinate representation example of q-oscillator given by Macfarlane as the functions orthogonal with respect to an unusual inner product definition. It is shown that the eigenfunctions in both q-oscillator examples are infinitely degenerate.
We obtain asymptotics in n for the n-dimensional Hankel determinant whose symbol is the Gaussian multiplied by a step-like function. We use Riemann-Hilbert analysis of the related system of orthogonal polynomials to obtain our results.
We study the averaged product of characteristic polynomials of large random matrices in the Gaussian beta-ensemble perturbed by an external source of finite rank. We prove that at the edge of the spectrum, the limiting correlations involve two families of multivariate functions of Airy and Gaussian types. The precise form of the limiting correlations depends on the strength of the nonzero eigenvalues of the external source. A critical value for the latter is obtained and a phase transition phenomenon similar to that of arXiv:math/0403022 is established. The derivation of our results relies mai…
In classical random matrix theory the Gaussian and chiral Gaussian random matrix models with a source are realized as shifted mean Gaussian, and chiral Gaussian, random matrices with real $(β= 1)$, complex ($β= 2)$ and real quaternion $(β= 4$) elements. We use the Dyson Brownian motion model to give a meaning for general $β> 0$. In the Gaussian case a further construction valid for $β> 0$ is given, as the eigenvalue PDF of a recursively defined random matrix ensemble. In the case of real or complex elements, a combinatorial argument is used to compute the averaged characteristic polynomial. Th…
We study the characteristic polynomial of Haar distributed random unitary matrices. We show that after a suitable normalization, as one increases the size of the matrix, powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial as well as powers of the exponential of its argument converge in law to a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure for small enough real powers. This establishes a connection between random matrix theory and the theory of Gaussian multiplicative chaos.
We compute asymptotics for Hankel determinants and orthogonal polynomials with respect to a discontinuous Gaussian weight, in a critical regime where the discontinuity is close to the edge of the associated equilibrium measure support. Their behavior is described in terms of the Ablowitz-Segur family of solutions to the Painlevé II equation. Our results complement the ones in [Xu,Zhao,2011]. As consequences of our results, we conjecture asymptotics for an Airy kernel Fredholm determinant and total integral identities for Painlevé II transcendents, and we also prove a new result on the poles of…
We consider the asymptotic behavior of the second mixed moment of the characteristic polynomials of the 1D Gaussian band matrices, i.e. of the hermitian matrices $H_n$ with independent Gaussian entries such that $< H_{ij}H_{lk}>=δ_{ik}δ_{jl}J_{ij}$, where $J=(-W^2\triangle+1)^{-1}$. Assuming that $W^2=n^{1+θ}$, $0<θ<1$, we show that this asymptotic behavior (as $n\to\infty$) in the bulk of the spectrum coincides with those for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble.
We obtain generalized Christoffel-Darboux (GCD) formula for skew-orthogonal polynomials (SOP). Using this, we present an alternative derivation of the level density and two-point function for Gaussian orthogonal ensembles (GOE) and Gaussian symplectic ensembles (GSE) of random matrices.
These lectures provide an informal introduction into the notions and tools used to analyze statistical properties of eigenvalues of large random Hermitian matrices. After developing the general machinery of orthogonal polynomial method, we study in most detail Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) as a paradigmatic example. In particular, we discuss Plancherel-Rotach asymptotics of Hermite polynomials in various regimes and employ it in spectral analysis of the GUE. In the last part of the course we discuss general relations between orthogonal polynomials and characteristic polynomials of random mat…
We study the characteristic polynomials of both the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles. We show that for both ensembles, powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomials converge in law to Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures after normalization for sufficiently small real powers. The main tool is a new asymptotic relation between the fractional moments of the absolute characteristic polynomials of Gaussian Orthogonal, Unitary, and Symplectic Ensembles.
We study the distribution of the largest eigenvalue in the "Pfaffian" classical ensembles of random matrix theory, namely in the Gaussian orthogonal (GOE) and Gaussian symplectic (GSE) ensembles, using semi-classical skew-orthogonal polynomials, in analogue to the approach of Nadal and Majumdar (NM) for the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE). Generalizing the techniques of Adler, Forrester, Nagao and van Moerbeke, and using "overlapping Pfaffian" identities due to Knuth, we explicitly construct these semi-classical skew-orthogonal polynomials in terms of the semi-classical orthogonal polynomials …
We consider asymptotics of ratios of random characteristic polynomials associated with orthogonal polynomial ensembles. Under some natural conditions on the measure in the definition of the orthogonal polynomial ensemble we establish a universality limit for these ratios.
We consider the orthogonal polynomials, $\{P_n(z)\}_{n=0,1,\cdots}$, with respect to the measure $$|z-a|^{2c} e^{-N|z|^2}dA(z)$$ supported over the whole complex plane, where $a>0$, $N>0$ and $c>-1$. We look at the scaling limit where $n$ and $N$ tend to infinity while keeping their ratio, $n/N$, fixed. The support of the limiting zero distribution is given in terms of certain "limiting potential-theoretic skeleton" of the unit disk. We show that, as we vary $c$, both the skeleton and the asymptotic distribution of the zeros behave discontinuously at $c=0$. The smooth interpolation of the disc…
For random matrix ensembles with non-gaussian matrix elements that may exhibit some correlations, it is shown that centered traces of polynomials in the matrix converge in distribution to a Gaussian process whose covariance matrix is diagonal in the basis of Chebyshev polynomials. The proof is combinatorial and adapts Wigner's argument showing the convergence of the density of states to the semicircle law.
We show that for Gaussian random SU(2)polynomials of a large degree $N$ the probability that there are no zeros in the disk of radius $r$ is less than $e^{-c_{1,r} N^2}$, and is also greater than $e^{-c_{2,r} N^2}$. Enroute to this result, we also derive a more general result: probability estimates for the event that the number of complex zeros of a random polynomial of high degree deviates significantly from its mean.
We prove that the asymptotic behavior of the second mixed moment of the characteristic polynomials of the 1D Gaussian real symmetric band matrices coincides with those for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE). Here we adapt the approach of T. Shcherbina'14, where the case of 1D Hermitian random band matrices was considered.
An expression for the joint probability distribution of the principal curvatures at an arbitrary point in the ensemble of isosurfaces defined on isotropic Gaussian random fields on Rn is derived. The result is obtained by deriving symmetry properties of the ensemble of second derivative matrices of isotropic Gaussian random fields akin to those of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble.
In this paper we study the problem of ergodicity for the complex Ginzburg--Landau equation perturbed by an unbounded random kick-force. Randomness is introduced both through the kicks and through the times between the kicks. We show that the Markov process associated with the equation in question possesses a unique stationary distribution and satisfies a property of polynomial mixing.
Asymptotic expansions of Gaussian integrals may often be interpreted as generating functions for certain combinatorial objects (graphs with additional data). In this article we discuss a general approach to all such cases using colored graphs. We prove that the generating power series for such graphs satisfy the same system of partial differential equations as the Gaussian integral and the formal power series solution of this system is unique. The solution is obtained as the genus expansion of the generating power series. The initial term of this expansion is the corresponding generating funct…
We calculate a general spectral correlation function of products and ratios of characteristic polynomials for a $N\times N$ random matrix taken from the chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (chGUE). Our derivation is based upon finding an Itzykson-Zuber type integral for matrices from the non-compact manifold ${\sf{Gl(n,{\mathcal{C}})/U(1)\times ...\times U(1)}}$ (matrix Macdonald function). The correlation function is shown to be always represented in a determinant form generalising the known expressions for only positive moments. Finally, we present the asymptotic formula for the correlation fun…
Observables in random tensor theory are polynomials in the entries of a tensor of rank $d$ which are invariant under $U(N)^d$. It is notoriously difficult to evaluate the expectations of such polynomials, even in the Gaussian distribution. In this article, we introduce singular value decompositions to evaluate the expectations of polynomial observables of Gaussian random tensors. Performing the matrix integrals over the unitary group leads to a notion of effective observables which expand onto regular, matrix trace invariants. Examples are given to illustrate that both asymptotic and exact new…
We study the two-point correlation functions for the zeroes of systems of $SO(n+1)$-invariant Gaussian random polynomials on $\mathbb{RP}^n$ and systems of ${\rm isom}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-invariant Gaussian analytic functions. Our result reflects the same "repelling," "neutral," and "attracting" short-distance asymptotic behavior, depending on the dimension, as was discovered in the complex case by Bleher, Shiffman, and Zelditch. For systems of the ${\rm isom}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-invariant Gaussian analytic functions we also obtain a fast decay of correlations at long distances. We then prove that the c…
A difficult problem in the theory of random tensors is to calculate the expectation values of polynomials in the tensor entries, even in the large N limit and in a Gaussian distribution. Here we address this issue, focusing on a family of polynomials labeled by permutations, which naturally generalize the single-trace invariants of random matrix models. Through Wick's theorem, we show that the Feynman graph expansion of the expectation values of those polynomials enumerates meandric systems whose lower arch configuration is obtained from the upper arch configuration by a permutation on half of…
We show that the Circular Orthogonal Ensemble of random matrices arises naturally from a family of random polynomials. This sheds light on the appearance of random matrix statistics in the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function.
We study the density of complex critical points of a real random SO(m+1) polynomial in m variables. In a previous paper [Mac09], the author used the Poincare- Lelong formula to show that the density of complex zeros of a system of these real random polynomials rapidly approaches the density of complex zeros of a system of the corresponding complex random polynomials, the SU(m+1) polynomials. In this paper, we use the Kac- Rice formula to prove an analogous result: the density of complex critical points of one of these real random polynomials rapidly approaches the density of complex critical p…
We study the distribution of the maximal height of the outermost path in the model of $N$ nonintersecting Brownian motions on the half-line as $N\to \infty$, showing that it converges in the proper scaling to the Tracy-Widom distribution for the largest eigenvalue of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. This is as expected from the viewpoint that the maximal height of the outermost path converges to the maximum of the $\textrm{Airy}_2$ process minus a parabola. Our proof is based on Riemann-Hilbert analysis of a system of discrete orthogonal polynomials with a Gaussian weight in the double scalin…
We point out a simple criterion for convergence of polynomials to a concrete entire function in the Laguerre-Pólya ($\mathcal{LP}$) class (of all functions arising as uniform limits of polynomials with only real roots). We then use this to show that any random $\mathcal{LP}$ function can be obtained as the uniform limit of rescaled characteristic polynomials of principal submatrices of an infinite unitarily invariant random Hermitian matrix. Conversely, the rescaled characteristic polynomials of principal submatrices of any infinite random unitarily invariant Hermitian matrix converge uniforml…
The integrated density of states of a Schroedinger operator with random potential given by a homogeneous Gaussian field whose covariance function is continuous, compactly supported and has positive mean, is locally uniformly Lipschitz-continuous. This is proven using a Wegner estimate.
Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) is a near-term quantum computation framework that is believed to be classically intractable, but yet rich of potential applications. In this paper we study the intimate relation between distributions defined over classes of samples from a GBS device with graph matching polynomials. For this purpose, we introduce a new graph polynomial called the displaced GBS polynomial, whose coefficients are the coarse-grained photon-number probabilities of an arbitrary undirected graph $G$ encoded in a GBS device. We report a discovery of a duality between the displaced GBS pol…
This work concerns superharmonic perturbations of a Gaussian measure given by a special class of positive weights in the complex plane of the form $w(z) = \exp(-|z|^2 + U^μ(z))$, where $U^μ(z)$ is the logarithmic potential of a compactly supported positive measure $μ$. The equilibrium measure of the corresponding weighted energy problem is shown to be supported on subharmonic generalized quadrature domains for a large class of perturbing potentials $U^μ(z)$. It is also shown that the $2\times 2$ matrix d-bar problem for orthogonal polynomials with respect to such weights is well-defined and ha…
We report the similarity between the Nakagami-m fading distribution and the three Gaussian ensembles of random matrix theory. We provide a brief review of random matrix theory and wireless fading. We show that the Nakagami-m distribution serves as mapping between the three ensembles. The statistics of the wireless fading amplitude, as modeled by Nakagami-m distribution, provide a rare example of a classically chaotic system that exhibits a transition between the Gaussian orthogonal, Gaussian unitary, and Gaussian symplectic ensembles of random matrix theory.
We present new and streamlined proofs of various formulae for products and ratios of characteristic polynomials of random Hermitian matrices that have appeared recently in the literature.
