We present an introduction to the mathematical theory of the Lagrangian formalism for multiform fields on Minkowski spacetime based on the multiform and extensor calculus. Our formulation gives a unified mathematical description for the main relativistic field theories including the gravitational field (which however will be discussed in a separate paper). We worked out several examples (including tricks of the trade), from simple to very sophisticated ones (like, e.g., the Dirac-Hestenes field on the more general gravitational background) which show the power and beauty of the formalism.
By considering the closure property of a Lagrangian multiform as a conservation law, we use Noether's theorem to show that every variational symmetry of a Lagrangian leads to a Lagrangian multiform. In doing so, we provide a systematic method for constructing Lagrangian multiforms for which the closure property and the multiform Euler-Lagrange (EL) equations both hold. We present three examples, including the first known example of a Lagrangian 3-form: a multiform for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. We also present a new proof of the multiform EL equations for a Lagrangian k-form for arbi…
We construct a Lagrangian multiform for the class of cyclotomic (rational) Gaudin models by formulating its hierarchy within the Lie dialgebra framework of Semenov-Tian-Shansky and by using the framework of Lagrangian multiforms on coadjoint orbits. This provides the first example of a Lagrangian multiform for an integrable hierarchy whose classical $r$-matrix is non-skew-symmetric and spectral parameter-dependent. As an important by-product of the construction, we obtain a Lagrangian multiform for the periodic Toda chain by choosing an appropriate realisation of the cyclotomic Gaudin Lax matr…
It is shown that the Zakharov-Mihailov (ZM) Lagrangian structure for integrable nonlinear equations derived from a general class of Lax pairs possesses a Lagrangian multiform structure. We show that, as a consequence of this multiform structure, we can formulate a variational principle for the Lax pair itself, a problem that to our knowledge was never previously considered. As an example, we present an integrable $N\times N$ matrix system that contains the AKNS hierarchy, and we exhibit the Lagrangian multiform structure of the scalar AKNS hierarchy by presenting the components corresponding t…
Motivated by the notion of Lagrangian multiforms, which provide a Lagrangian formulation of integrability, and by results of the authors on the role of covariant Hamiltonian formalism for integrable field theories, we propose the notion of Hamiltonian multiforms for integrable $1+1$-dimensional field theories. They provide the Hamiltonian counterpart of Lagrangian multiforms and encapsulate in a single object an arbitrary number of flows within an integrable hierarchy. For a given hierarchy, taking a Lagrangian multiform as starting point, we provide a systematic construction of a Hamiltonian …
A modern notion of integrability is that of multidimensional consistency (MDC), which classically implies the coexistence of (commuting) dynamical flows in several independent variables for one and the same dependent variable. This property holds for both continuous dynamical systems as well as for discrete ones defined in discrete space-time. Possibly the simplest example in the discrete case is that of a linear quadrilateral lattice equation, which can be viewed as a linearised version of the well-known lattice potential Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. In spite of the linearity, the MDC pr…
We present a variational theory of integrable differential-difference equations (semi-discrete integrable systems). This is a natural extension of the ideas known by the names "Lagrangian multiforms" and "Pluri-Lagrangian systems", which have previously been established in both the fully discrete and fully continuous cases. The main feature of these ideas is to capture a hierarchy of commuting equations in a single variational principle. Our main example to illustrate the new semi-discrete theory of Lagrangian multiforms is the Toda lattice. This ODE describes the evolution in continuous time …
In recent years, new properties of space-time duality in the Hamiltonian formalism of certain integrable classical field theories have been discovered and have led to their reformulation using ideas from covariant Hamiltonian field theory: in this sense, the covariant nature of their classical $r$-matrix structure was unraveled. Here, we solve the open question of extending these results to a whole hierarchy. We choose the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy. To do so, we introduce for the first time a Lagrangian multiform for the entire AKNS hierarchy. We use it to construct explicitl…
It is proven that the kernel of the fermionic projector of regularized Dirac sea vacua in Minkowski Space is $L^4$-integrable. The proof is carried out in the specific setting of a continuous exponentially-decaying cutoff in momentum space. As a direct consequence, the corresponding causal Lagrangian is shown to be $L^1$-integrable. Some topological features of the integrated causal Lagrangian are analyzed. In particular, local Hölder-like estimates are proved for continuous regular variations of spacetime, of which a few examples are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on first-order per…
In this paper we present a theory of the gravitational field where this field (a kind of square root of g) is represented by a (1,1)-extensor field h describing a plastic distortion of the Lorentz vacuum (a real substance that lives in a Minkowski spacetime) due to the presence of matter. The field h distorts the Minkowski metric extensor in an appropriate way (see below) generating what may be interpreted as an effective Lorentzian metric extensor g and also it permits the introduction of different kinds of parallelism rules on the world manifold, which may be interpreted as distortions of th…
The details of unconstrained Lagrangian formulations (being continuation of earlier developed research for Bose particles in NPB 862 (2012) 270, [arXiv:1110.5044[hep-th]], Phys. of Part. and Nucl. 43 (2012) 689, [arXiv:1202.4710 [hep-th]]) are reviewed for Fermi particles propagated on an arbitrary dimensional Minkowski space-time and described by the unitary irreducible half-integer higher-spin representations of the Poincare group subject to Young tableaux $Y(s_1,...,s_k)$ with $k$ rows. The procedure is based on the construction of the Verma modules and finding auxiliary oscillator realizat…
In a previous paper we investigate a Lagrangian field theory for the gravitational field (which is there represented by a section g^a of the orthonormal coframe bundle over Minkowski spacetime. Such theory, under appropriate conditions, has been proved to be equivalent to a Lorentzian spacetime structure, where the metric tensor satisfies Einstein field equations. Here, we first recall that according to quantum field theory ideas gravitation is described by a Lagrangian theory of a possible massive graviton field (generated by matter fields and coupling also to itself) living in Minkowski spac…
We review the details of unconstrained Lagrangian formulations for Bose particles propagated on an arbitrary dimensional flat space-time and described by the unitary irreducible integer higher-spin representations of the Poincare group subject to Young tableaux $Y(s_1,...,s_k)$ with $k$ rows. The procedure is based on the construction of Verma modules and finding auxiliary oscillator realizations for the symplectic $sp(2k)$ algebra which encodes the second-class operator constraints subsystem in the HS symmetry algebra. Application of an universal BRST approach reproduces gauge-invariant Lagra…
The Lagrangian of the causal action principle is computed in Minkowski space for Dirac wave functions interacting with classical electromagnetism and linearized gravity in the limiting case when the ultraviolet cutoff is removed. Various surface layer integrals are computed in this limiting case.
Several interacting models of chiral bosons and gauge fields are investigated on the noncommutative extended Minkowski spacetime which was recently proposed from a new point of view of disposing noncommutativity. The models include the bosonized chiral Schwinger model, the generalized chiral Schwinger model (GCSM) and its gauge invariant formulation. We establish the Lagrangian theories of the models, and then derive the Hamilton's equations in accordance with the Dirac's method and solve the equations of motion, and further analyze the self-duality of the Lagrangian theories in terms of the p…
We propose a noncommutative extension of the Minkowski spacetime by introducing a well-defined proper time from the kappa-deformed Minkowski spacetime related to the standard basis. The extended Minkowski spacetime is commutative, i.e. it is based on the standard Heisenberg commutation relations, but some information of noncommutativity is encoded through the proper time to it. Within this framework, by simply considering the Lorentz invariance we can construct field theory models that comprise noncommutative effects naturally. In particular, we find a kind of temporal fuzziness related to non…
We construct a non-commutative kappa-Minkowski deformation of U(1) gauge theory, following a general approach, recently proposed in JHEP 2008 (2020) 041. We obtain an exact (all orders in the non-commutativity parameter) expression for both the deformed gauge transformations and the deformed field strength, which is covariant under these transformations. The corresponding Yang-Mills Lagrangian is gauge covariant and reproduces the Maxwell Lagrangian in the commutative limit. Gauge invariance of the action functional requires a non-trivial integration measure which, in the commutative limit, do…
In this paper using the Clifford bundle formalism a Lagrangian theory of the Yang-Mills type (with a gauge fixing term and an auto interacting term) for the gravitational field in Minkowski spacetime is presented. It is shown how two simple hypothesis permit the interpretation of the formalism in terms of effective Lorentzian or teleparallel geometries. In the case of a Lorentzian geometry interpretation of the theory the field equations are shown to be equivalent to Einstein's equations.
BRST-BFV method for constrained Lagrangian formulations (LFs) for (ir)reducible half-integer HS Poincare group representations in Minkowski space is suggested. The procedure is derived by 2 ways: from the unconstrained BRST-BFV method for mixed-symmetry HS fermionic fields subject to an arbitrary Young tableaux with k rows (suggested in arXiv:1211.1273[hep-th]) by extracting the second-class constraints, $\widehat{O}_α=(\widehat{O}_a, \widehat{O}^+_a)$, from a total superalgebra of constraints, second, in self-consistent way by means of finding BRST-extended initial off-shell algebraic constra…
We characterize symmetry transformations of Lagrangian extremals generating `on shell' conservation laws. We relate symmetry transformations of extremals to Jacobi fields and study symmetries of higher variations by proving that a pair given by a symmetry of the $l$-th variation of a Lagrangian and by a Jacobi field of the $s$-th variation of the same Lagrangian (with $s<l$) is associated with an `off shell' conserved current. The conserved current associated with two symmetry transformations is constructed and, as a case of study, its expression for invariant Yang--Mills connections on Minkow…

Invariance under finite conformal transformations in Minkowski space and the Wightman axioms imply strong locality (Huygens principle) and rationality of correlation functions, thus providing an extension of the concept of vertex algebra to higher dimensions. Gibbs (finite temperature) expectation values appear as elliptic functions in the conformal time. We survey and further pursue our program of constructing a globally conformal invariant model of a hermitean scalar field L of scale dimension four in Minkowski space-time which can be interpreted as the Lagrangian density of a gauge field th…
In this paper we show how a gravitational field generated by a given energy-momentum distribution (for all realistic cases) can be represented by distinct geometrical structures (Lorentzian, teleparallel and non null nonmetricity spacetimes) or that we even can dispense all those geometrical structures and simply represent the gravitational field as a field in the Faraday's sense living in Minkowski spacetime. The explicit Lagrangian density for this theory is given and the field equations (which are Maxwell's like equations) are shown to be equivalent to Einstein's equations. Some examples ar…
A Poincaré covariant Lagrange anchor is found for the non-Lagrangian relativistic wave equations of Bargmann and Wigner describing free massless fields of spin $s>1/2$ in four-dimensional Minkowski space. By making use of this Lagrange anchor, we assign a symmetry to each conservation law and perform the path-integral quantization of the theory.
We analyze the stability properties shown by KMS states for interacting massive scalar fields propagating over Minkowski spacetime, recently constructed in the framework of perturbative algebraic quantum field theories by Fredenhagen and Lindner \cite{FredenhagenLindner}. In particular, we prove the validity of the return to equilibrium property when the interaction Lagrangian has compact spatial support. Surprisingly, this does not hold anymore, if the adiabatic limit is considered, namely when the interaction Lagrangian is invariant under spatial translations. Consequently, an equilibrium st…
The details of Lagrangian description of irreducible integer higher-spin representations of the Poincare group with an Young tableaux $Y[\hat{s}_1,\hat{s}_2]$ having $2$ columns are considered for Bose particles propagated on an arbitrary dimensional Minkowski space-time. The procedure is based, first, on using of an auxiliary Fock space generated by Fermi oscillators (antisymmetric basis), second, on construction of the Verma module and finding auxiliary oscillator realization for $sl(2)\oplus sl(2)$ algebra which encodes the second-class operator constraints subsystem in the HS symmetry supe…
We investigate the causal structure of general nonlinear electrodynamics and determine which Lagrangians generate an effective metric conformal to Minkowski. We also proof that there is only one analytic nonlinear electrodynamics presenting no birefringence.
The paper introduces the approach to construction of the Lagrangian of the field (fields). This approach is based solely on the metric function of the Finsler space: the Lagrangian is constructed as the unit divided by the volume swept by the unit vector running through all the points of the indicatrix in the tangent space under the assumption of the tangent space being Euclidean. For the space, which is conformally connected to the Minkowski space, under the assumption of the exponential time dependence and spherically symmetrical coordinates dependence the cosmological equation is written, w…
In this article, we study the coupling of the Einstein field equations of general relativity to a family of models of nonlinear electromagnetic fields. The family comprises all covariant electromagnetic models that satisfy the following criteria: they are derivable from a sufficiently regular Lagrangian, they reduce to the linear Maxwell model in the weak-field limit, and their corresponding energy-momentum tensors satisfy the dominant energy condition. Our main result is a proof of the global nonlinear stability of the 1 + 3-dimensional Minkowski spacetime solution to the coupled system for a…
The structure of a cubic Lagrangian vertex is clarified for irreducible fields of helicities $s_1, s_2, s_3$ in a $d$-dimensional Minkowski space. An explicit form of the operator $\mathcal{Z}_j$ entering the vertex in a non-multiplicative way (examined in arXiv:2105.12030[hep-th] for $j=1$) is obtained. The solution is found within the BRST approach with complete BRST operators, which contain all constraints corresponding to the conditions that extract the irreducible fields, including trace operators.
The semiclassical limit of full non-commutative gauge theory is known as Poisson gauge theory. In this work we revise the construction of Poisson gauge theory paying attention to the geometric meaning of the structures involved and advance in the direction of a further development of the proposed formalism, including the derivation of Noether identities and conservation of currents. For any linear non-commutativity, $Θ^{ab}(x)=f^{ab}_c\,x^c$, with $f^{ab}_c$ being structure constants of a Lie algebra, an explicit form of the gauge Lagrangian is proposed. In particular a universal solution for …
For classical relativistic field theory in Minkowski space-time, the addition of a superpotential term to a conserved current density is trivial in the sense that it does not modify the local conservation law nor change the conserved charge, though it may allow us to obtain a current density with some improved properties. The addition of a total derivative term to a Lagrangian density is also trivial in the sense that it does not modify the equations of motion of the theory. These facts suggest that both operations are related and possibly equivalent to each other for any global symmetry of an…
Gauge-invariant descriptions for a free bosonic scalar field of continuous spin in a $d$-dimensional Minkowski space-time using a metric-like formulation are constructed on the basis of a constrained BRST-BFV approach we propose. The resulting BRST-BFV equations of motion for a scalar field augmented by ghost operators contains different sets of auxiliary fields, depending on the manner of a partial gauge-fixing and a resolution of some of the equations of motion for a BRST-unfolded first-stage reducible gauge theory. To achieve an equivalence of the resulting BRST-unfolded constrained equatio…
