The Camassa-Holm shallow water equation is known to be Hamiltonian with respect to two compatible Poisson brackets. A set of conjugate variables is constructed for both brackets using spectral theory.
We establish the uniqueness of solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation on a finite interval with non-homogeneous boundary conditions in the case of bounded momentum. A similar result for the higher-order Camassa-Holm system is also given. Our proofs rely on energy-type methods, with some multipliers given as solutions of some auxiliary elliptic systems.
In this paper, we solve the Camassa-Holm equation for a relatively large class of initial data by using a factorization problem on the Hilbert-Schmidt group.
We present some new persistence results for the non-periodic two-component Camassa-Holm (2CH) system in weighted $L_p$ spaces. Working with moderate weight functions that are commonly used in time-frequency analysis, the paper generalizes some recent persistence results for the Camassa-Holm equation [L. Brandolese, Int. Math. Res. Notices 22 (2012) 5161-81] to its supersymmetric extension. As an application we discuss the spatial asymptotic profile of solutions to 2CH.
It is shown that a strong solution of the Camassa-Holm equation, initially decaying exponentially together with its spacial derivative, must be identically equal to zero if it also decays exponentially at a later time. In particular, a strong solution of the Cauchy problem with compact initial profile can not be compactly supported at any later time unless it is the zero solution.
We study here the existence of solitary wave solutions of a generalized two-component Camassa-Holm system. In addition to those smooth solitary-wave solutions, we show that there are solitary waves with singularities: peaked and cusped solitary waves. We also demonstrate that all smooth solitary waves are orbitally stable in the energy space. We finally give a sufficient condition for global strong solutions to the equation without certain parameters.
A non-local evolution equation of the Camassa-Holm type with dissipation is considered. The local well-posedness of the solutions of the Cauchy problem involving the equation is established via Kato's approach and the wave breaking scenario is also described. To prove such result, we firstly construct conserved currents for the equation and from them, conserved quantities.
It is well known that the Camassa-Holm equation possesses numerous remarkable properties characteristic for KdV type equations. In this paper we show that it shares one more property with the KdV equation. Namely, Ibragimov has shown that the KdV and the modified KdV equations are self-adjoint. Starting from the generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation, we prove that the Camassa-Holm equation is self-adjoint. This property is important, e.g. for constructing conservation laws associated with symmetries of the equation in question. Accordingly, we construct conservation laws for the generali…
The paper aims at developing the Riemann-Hilbert (RH) approach for the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation on the line with non-zero boundary conditions, in the case when the solution is assumed to approach two different constants at different sides of the line. We present detailed properties of spectral functions associated with the initial data for the Cauchy problem for the mCH equation and obtain a representation for the solution of this problem in terms of the solution of an associated RH problem.
Considered herein are the generalized Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations in the spatially periodic setting. The precise blow-up scenarios of strong solutions are derived for both of equations. Several conditions on the initial data guaranteeing the development of singularities in finite time for strong solutions of these two equations are established. The exact blow-up rates are also determined. Finally, geometric descriptions of these two integrable equations from non-stretching invariant curve flows in centro-equiaffine geometries, pseudo-spherical surfaces and affine surfaces are…
We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of the Camassa-Holm equation for decaying initial data, completing previous results by A. Boutet de Monvel and D. Shepelsky.
A reciprocal transformation for a 3-component Camassa-Holm type system is constructed to connect it with the first negative flow of a generalized MKdV hierarchy, and a bi-Hamiltonian structure for the transformed system is also considered.
The Cauchy problem for the Camassa -- Holm equation with step-like initial conditions is reformulated as a Riemann -- Hilbert problem. The the initial value problem solution is obtained then in a parametric form from the Riemann -- Hilbert problem solution.
By a variational approach in the Lagrangian formalism, we derive the nonlinear integrable two-component Camassa-Holm system (1). We show that the two-component Camassa-Holm system (1) with the plus sign arises as an approximation to the Euler equations of hydrodynamics for propagation of irrotational shallow water waves over a flat bed. The Lagrangian used in the variational derivation is not a metric.
We describe the physical hypothesis in which an approximate model of water waves is obtained. For an irrotational unidirectional shallow water flow, we derive the Camassa-Holm equation by a variational approach in the Lagrangian formalism.
In this paper, we show that the peakon (peaked soliton) solutions can be recovered from the smooth soliton solutions, in the sense that there exists a sequence of smooth N-soliton solutions of the dispersion Camassa-Holm equation converging to the N-peakon of the dispersionless Camassa-Holm equation uniformly with respect to the spatial variable x when the dispersion parameter tends to zero. The main tools are asymptotic analysis and determinant identities.
In this paper we provide a formal derivation of both the Camassa-Holm equation and the fractional Camassa-Holm equation for the propagation of small-but-finite amplitude long waves in a nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium. We first show that the equation of motion for the nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium reduces to the improved Boussinesq equation for a particular choice of the kernel function appearing in the integral-type constitutive relation. We then derive the Camassa-Holm equation from the improved Boussinesq equation using an asymptotic expansion valid as nonlinearity and…
A coupled Camassa-Holm type equation is linked to the first negative flow of a modified Drinfeld-Sokolov III hierarchy by a transformation of reciprocal type. Meanwhile the Lax pair and bi-Hamiltonian structure behaviors of this coupled Camassa-Holm type equation under change of variables are analyzed.
We establish the inverse spectral transform for the conservative Camassa-Holm flow with decaying initial data. In particular, it is employed to prove existence of weak solutions for the corresponding Cauchy problem.
We study the long-time asymptotics of solution of the Cauchy problem for the Camassa-Holm equation with a step-like initial datum. By using the nonlinear steepest descent method and the so-called $g$-function approach, we show that the Camassa-Holm equation exhibits a rich structure of sharply separated regions in the $x,t$-half-plane with qualitatively different asymptotics, which can be described in terms of a sum of modulated finite-gap hyperelliptic or elliptic functions and a finite number of solitons.
We discuss a reciprocal transformation for a three-component Camassa-Holm type equation and find that the transformed system is a reduction of the first negative flow for an extended MKdV hierarchy.
This paper is concerned with a multi-component Camassa-Holm system, which has been proven to be integrable and has peakon solutions. This system includes many one-component and two-component Camassa-Holm type systems as special cases. In this paper, we first establish the local well-posedness and a continuation criterion for the system, then we present several global existence or blow-up results for two important integrable two-component subsystems. Our obtained results cover and improve recent results in \cite{Gui,yan}.
We describe the physical hypotheses underlying the derivation of an approximate model of water waves. For unidirectional surface shallow water waves moving over an irrotational flow as well as over a non-zero vorticity flow, we derive the Camassa-Holm equation by an interplay of variational methods and small-parameter expansions.
In this paper, we study an initial boundary value problem for a generalized Camassa-Holm equation. We establish local well-posedness of this closed-loop system by using Kato theorem for abstract quasilinear evolution equation of hyperbolic type. Then, by using multiplier technique, we obtain a conservation law which enable us to present a blow-up result.
In this paper, we study a generalized Camassa-Holm (gCH) model with both dissipation and dispersion, which has (N + 1)-order nonlinearities and includes the following three integrable equations: the Camassa-Holm, the Degasperis-Procesi, and the Novikov equations, as its reductions. We first present the local well-posedness and a precise blow-up scenario of the Cauchy problem for the gCH equation. Then we provide several sufficient conditions that guarantee the global existence of the strong solutions to the gCH equation. Finally, we investigate the propagation speed for the gCH equation when t…
In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of a generalized Rotation-Camassa-Holm equation, which is the $θ$-equation augmented with the Coriolis effect, induced by the earth rotation. The generalized Rotation-Camassa-Holm equation (named as Rotation-$θ$ equation) is a generalization of a family of models (including the Rotation-Camassa-Holm equation for $θ=\frac{1}{3}$, asymptotic Rotation-Camassa-Holm equation for $θ=1$ and the Rotation-Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation for $θ=\frac{1}{4}$). Our study is conducted via the bifurcation method and qualitative theory of dynamical systems. The existen…
In this paper, we investigate the long time behaviour for a class of low-regularity solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation given by the superposition of infinitely many interacting traveling waves with corners at their peaks.
We study numerically solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries and Camassa-Holm equation close to the breakup of the corresponding solution to the dispersionless equation. The solutions are compared with the properly rescaled numerical solution to a fourth order ordinary differential equation, the second member of the Painlevé I hierarchy. It is shown that this solution gives a valid asymptotic description of the solutions close to breakup. We present a detailed analysis of the situation and compare the Korteweg-de Vries solution quantitatively with asymptotic solutions obtained via the solution of t…
This paper is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of global weak solutions to a generalized Camassa-Holm equation on real line. By introducing some new variables, the equation is transformed into two different semi-linear systems. Then the existence and uniqueness of global weak solutions to the original equation are obtained from that of the two semi-linear systems, respectively.
A nonlinearly generalized Camassa-Holm equation, depending an arbitrary nonlinearity power $p \neq 0$, is considered. This equation reduces to the Camassa-Holm equation when $p=1$ and shares one of the Hamiltonian structures of the Camassa-Holm equation. Two main results are obtained. A classification of point symmetries is presented and a peakon solution is derived, for all powers $p \neq 0$.
In this note we classify some integrable invariant Sobolev metrics on the Abelian extension of the diffeomorphism group of the circle. We also derive a new two-component generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation. The system obtained appears to be unique bi-Hamiltonian flow on the coadiont obrit of $\Diff_+(S^1)\ltimes C^\infty(S^1)$ generalizes the Camassa-Holm flow on $\Vect(S^1)^*$.
We construct a new series of multicomponent integrable PDE systems that contain as particular example (with appropriately chosen parameters) many famous integrable systems including KdV, coupled KdV, Harry Dym, coupled Harry Dym, Camassa-Holm, multicomponent Camassa-Holm, Kaup-Boussinesq systems. The series contains also integrable systems with no low-component analogues.
The non-isospectral problem (Lax pair) associated with a hierarchy in 2+1 dimensions that generalizes the well known Camassa-Holm hierarchy is presented. Here, we have investigated the non-classical Lie symmetries of this Lax pair when the spectral parameter is considered as a field. These symmetries can be written in terms of five arbitrary constants and three arbitrary functions. Different similarity reductions associated with these symmetries have been derived. Of particular interest are the reduced hierarchies whose $1+1$ Lax pair is also non-isospectral.
We introduce a generalized isospectral problem for global conservative multi-peakon solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. Utilizing the solution of the indefinite moment problem given by M. G. Krein and H. Langer, we show that the conservative Camassa-Holm equation is integrable by the inverse spectral transform in the multi-peakon case.
We show that the continuous limit of a wide natural class of the right-invariant discrete Lagrangian systems on the Virasoro group gives the family of integrable PDE's containing Camassa-Holm, Hunter-Saxton and Korteweg-de Vries equations. This family has been recently derived by Khesin and Misiolek as Euler equations on the Virasoro algebra for $H^1_{α,β}$-metrics. Our result demonstrates a universal nature of these equations.
Motivated by the paper (Beals, Sattinger and Szmigielski, Adv. Math. 154 (2000) 229--257), we propose an extension of the Camassa-Holm equation, which also admits the multipeakon solutions. The novel aspect is that our approach is mainly based on classic determinant technique. Furthermore, the proposed equation is shown to possess a nonisospectral Lax pair.
An integrable semi-discretization of the Camassa-Holm equation is presented. The keys of its construction are bilinear forms and determinant structure of solutions of the CH equation. Determinant formulas of $N$-soliton solutions of the continuous and semi-discrete Camassa-Holm equations are presented. Based on determinant formulas, we can generate multi-soliton, multi-cuspon and multi-soliton-cuspon solutions. Numerical computations using the integrable semi-discrete Camassa-Holm equation are performed. It is shown that the integrable semi-discrete Camassa-Holm equation gives very accurate nu…
In the present paper, we are concerned with integrable discretization of a modified Camassa-Holm equation with linear dispersion term. The key of the construction is the semi-discrete analogue for a set of bilinear equations of the modified Camassa-Holm equation. Firstly, we show that these bilinear equations and their determinant solutions either in Gram-type or Casorati-type can be reduced from the discrete KP equation through Miwa transformation. Then, by scrutinizing the reduction process, we obtain a set of semi-discrete bilinear equations and their general soliton solution in Gram-type o…
In our paper we show that the Camassa-Holm equation does not represent a long wave asymptotic due to a major inconsistency with the theory of shallow water waves. We state that any solution of the Camassa-Holm equation, which is not asymptotically close to a solution of the Korteweg--de Vries equation is an artefact of the model and irrelevant to the theory of shallow water waves.
Peaked periodic waves in the Camassa-Holm equation are revisited. Linearized evolution equations are derived for perturbations to the peaked periodic waves and linearized instability is proven both in $H^1$ and $W^{1,\infty}$ norms. Dynamics of perturbations in $H^1$ is related to the existence of two conserved quantities and is bounded in the full nonlinear system due to these conserved quantities. On the other hand, perturbations to the peaked periodic wave grow in $W^{1,\infty}$ norm and may blow up in a finite time in the nonlinear evolution of the Camassa-Holm equation.
We derive the 2-component Camassa-Holm equation and corresponding N=1 super generalization as geodesic flows with respect to the $H^1$ metric on the extended Bott-Virasoro and superconformal groups, respectively.
An independent derivation of solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation in terms of multi-dimensional theta functions is presented using an approach based on Fay's identities. Reality and smoothness conditions are studied for these solutions from the point of view of the topology of the underlying real hyperelliptic surface. The solutions are studied numerically for concrete examples, also in the limit where the surface degenerates to the Riemann sphere, and where solitons and cuspons appear.
Using geometrical approach exposed in arXiv:math/0304245 and arXiv:nlin/0511012, we explore the Camassa-Holm equation (both in its initial scalar form, and in the form of 2x2-system). We describe Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, recursion operators and infinite series of symmetries and conservation laws (local and nonlocal).
We discuss direct and inverse spectral theory for the isospectral problem of the dispersionless Camassa--Holm equation, where the weight is allowed to be a finite signed measure. In particular, we prove that this weight is uniquely determined by the spectral data and solve the inverse spectral problem for the class of measures which are sign definite. The results are applied to deduce several facts for the dispersionless Camassa--Holm equation. In particular, we show that initial conditions with integrable momentum asymptotically split into a sum of peakons as conjectured by McKean.
It is well-known that peakons in the Camassa-Holm equation are $H^1$-orbitally stable thanks to the presence of conserved quantities and properties of peakons as constrained energy minimizers. By using the method of characteristics, we prove that piecewise $C^1$ perturbations to peakons grow in time in spite of their stability in the $H^1$-norm. We also show that the linearized stability analysis near peakons contradicts the $H^1$-orbital stability result, hence passage from linear to nonlinear theory is false in $H^1$.
This paper is concerned with a link between central extensions of N=2 superconformal algebra and a supersymmetric two-component generalization of the Camassa--Holm equation. Deformations of superconformal algebra give rise to two compatible bracket structures. One of the bracket structures is derived from the central extension and admits a momentum operator which agrees with the Sobolev norm of a coadjoint orbit element. The momentum operator induces via Lenard relations a chain of conserved hamiltonians of the resulting supersymmetric Camassa-Holm hierarchy.
We show that wave breaking occurs with positive probability for the Stochastic Camassa-Holm (SCH) equation. This means that temporal stochasticity in the diffeomorphic flow map for SCH does not prevent the wave breaking process which leads to the formation of peakon solutions. We conjecture that the time-asymptotic solutions of SCH will consist of emergent wave trains of peakons moving along stochastic space-time paths.
