It is shown that Maxwell's equation cannot be put into a spinor form that is equivalent to Dirac's equation. First of all, the spinor ψin the representation \vec{F} = ψ\vec{u} \barψ of the electromagnetic field bivector depends on only three independent complex components whereas the Dirac spinor depends on four. Second, Dirac's equation implies a complex structure specific to spin 1/2 particles that has no counterpart in Maxwell's equation. This complex structure makes fermions essentially different from bosons and therefore insures that there is no physically meaningful way to transform Maxwell's and Dirac's equations into each other.
A theory where the gravitational, Maxwell and Dirac fields (mathematically represented as particular sections of a convenient Clifford bundle) are supposed fields in Faraday's sense living in Minkowski spacetime is presented. In our theory there exist a genuine energy-momentum tensor for the gravitational field and a genuine energy-momentum conservation law for the system of the interacting gravitational, Maxwell and Dirac fields. Moreover, the energy-mometum tensors of the Maxwell and Dirac fields are symmetric, and it is shown that the equations of motion for the gravitational potentials is …
The Maxwell-Dirac equations are the equations for electronic matter, the "classical" theory underlying QED. In this article we examine the stationary Maxwell-Dirac equations under weak regularity and decay assumptions. We prove that: There are no embedded eigenvalues in the essential spectrum, $-m\leq E\leq m$. If $|E|< m$ then the Dirac field components (and their derivatives) decay exponentially at spatial infinity. If $E|=m$ then the system is "asymptotically" static and decays exponentially if the total charge is non-zero.
We present a new theorem concerning a sufficient condition for a symmetric operator acting in a complex Hilbert space to be essentially self-adjoint. By applying the theorem, we prove that the Dirac Maxwell Hamiltonian, which describes a quantum system of a Dirac particle and a radiation field minimally interacting with each other, is essentially self-adjoint. Our theorem covers the case where the Dirac particle is in the Coulomb type potential.
A simple relation between the Maxwell system and the Dirac equation based on their quaternionic reformulation is discussed. We establish a close connection between solutions of both systems as well as a relation between the wave parameters of the electromagnetic field and the energy of the Dirac particle.
Maxwell's equation, Dirac's equation and the equation of gravito-electromagnetism are shown to be particular instances of the extended Maxwell system. The equations are discussed in the framework of the theory of evolutionary equations. Their formal relationship are systematically analyzed. Applications to coupled systems such as the Maxwell-Dirac system are also discussed.
Using a general theorem on conservation laws for arbitrary differential equations proved by Ibragimov, we have derived conservation laws for Dirac's symmetrized Maxwell-Lorentz equations under the assumption that both the electric and magnetic charges obey linear conductivity laws (dual Ohm's law). We find that this linear system allows for conservation laws which are non-local in time.
We study the Dirac-Maxwell model quantized in the Lorenz gauge. In this gauge, the space of quantum mechanical state vectors inevitably be an indefinite metric vector space so that the canonical commutation relation (CCR) is realized in a Lorentz covariant manner. In order to obtain a physical subspace in which no negative norm state exists, the method first proposed by Gupta and Bleuler is applied with mathematical rigor. It is proved that a suitably defined physical subspace has a positive semi-definit metric, and naturally induces a physical Hilbert space with a positive definite metric. Th…
The Maxwell-Dirac equations with nonzero charge mass in one space dimension are studied under the Lorentz gauge condition. The global existence and uniqueness of solution in $C([0,+\infty);L^2(R^1))\times C_b(R^1 \times [0,\infty))$ for initial value problem of Maxwell-Dirac equations are proved.
We prove the existence of a $L^2$-normalized solitary wave solution for the Maxwell-Dirac equations in (3+1)-Minkowski space. In addition, for the Coulomb-Dirac model, describing fermions with attractive Coulomb interactions in the mean-field limit, we prove the existence of the (positive) energy minimizer.
We study the coupled system of Maxwell and Dirac equations from a semiclassical point of view. A rigorous nonlinear WKB-analysis, locally in time, for solutions of (critical) order $O(\sqrtε)$ is performed, where the small semiclassical parameter $ε$ denotes the microscopic/macroscopic scale ratio.
We study the full Maxwell-Dirac equations: Dirac field with minimally coupled electromagnetic field and Maxwell field with Dirac current as source. Our particular interest is the static case in which the Dirac current is purely time-like -- the "electron" is at rest in some Lorentz frame. In this case we prove two theorems under rather general assumptions. Firstly, that if the system is also stationary (time independent in some gauge) then the system as a whole must have vanishing total charge, i.e. it must be electrically neutral. In fact, the theorem only requires that the system be {\em asy…
In this paper we discuss some unusual and unsuspected relations between Maxwell, Dirac and the Seiberg-Witten equations. First we investigatethe Maxwell-Dirac equivalence (MDE) of the first kind. Crucial to that proposed equivalence is the possibility of solving for $Ψ$(a representative on a given spinorial frame of a Dirac-Hestenes spinor field (DHSF)) the equation $F=Ψγ_{21} \simΨ$, where F is a given electromagnetic field. Such task is presented in this paper and it permits to clarify some possible objections to the MDE which claims that no MDE may exist, because F has six (real) degrees of…
We study nonlinear bound states, or solitary waves, in the Dirac-Maxwell system proving the existence of solutions in which the Dirac wave function is of the form $ϕ(x,ω)e^{-iωt}$, $ω\in(-m,ω_*)$, with some $ω_*>-m$, such that $ϕ_ω\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^3,\mathbb{C}^4)$, $\Vertϕ_ω\Vert^2_{L^2}=O(m-|ω|)$, and $\Vertϕ_ω\Vert_{L^\infty}=O(m-|ω|)$. The method of proof is an implicit function theorem argument based on an identification of the nonrelativistic limit as the ground state of the Choquard equation.
Many difficulties of interpretation met by contemporary researchers attempting to recast or generalize Dirac's, Proca's, or Maxwell's theories using biquaternions or Clifford numbers have been encountered long ago by a number of physicists including Lanczos, Proca, and Einstein. In the modern approach initiated by Gursey, these difficulties are solved by recognizing that most generalizations lead to theories describing superpositions of particles of different intrinsic spin and isospin, so that the correct interpretation emerges from the requirement of full Poincare covariance, including space…
A self consistent solution to Dirac equation in a Kerr Newman space-time with $M^2 > a^2 + Q^2$ is presented for the case when the Dirac particle is the source of the curvature and the electromagnetic field. The solution is localised, continuous everywhere and valid only for a special choice of the parameters appearing in the Dirac equation.
We consider for j=1/2, 3/2,... a spherically symmetric, static system of (2j+1) Dirac particles, each having total angular momentum j. The Dirac particles interact via a classical gravitational and electromagnetic field. The Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell equations for this system are derived. It is shown that, under weak regularity conditions on the form of the horizon, the only black hole solutions of the EDM equations are the Reissner-Nordstrom solutions. In other words, the spinors must vanish identically. Applied to the gravitational collapse of a "cloud" of spin-1/2-particles to a black hole, ou…
We study the peeling of Dirac and Maxwell fields on a Schwarzschild background following the approach developed by the authors in Mason-Nicolas 2009 for the wave equation. The method combines a conformal compactification with vector field techniques in order to work out the optimal space of initial data for a given transverse regularity of the rescaled field across null infinity. The results show that analogous decay and regularity assumptions in Minkowski and in Schwarzschild produce the same regularity across null infinity. The results are valid also for the classes of asymptotically simple …
We develop a complete Dirac's canonical analysis for an alternative action that yields Maxwell's four-dimensional equations of motion. We study in detail the full symmetries of the action by following all steps of Dirac's method in order to obtain a detailed description of symmetries. Our results indicate that such an action does not have the same symmetries than Maxwell theory, namely, the model is not a gauge theory and the number of physical degrees of freedom are different.
We analyze basic relativistic wave equations for the classical fields, such as Dirac's equation, Weyl's two-component equation for massless neutrinos, and the Proca, Maxwell, and Fierz-Pauli equations, from the viewpoint of the Pauli-Lubanski vector and the Casimir operators of the Poincare group. In general, in this group-theoretical approach, the above wave equations arise in certain overdetermined forms, which can be reduced to the conventional ones by a Gaussian elimination. A connection between the spin of a particle/field and consistency of the corresponding overdetermined system is emph…
We study the Maxwell-Dirac equations in a manifestly gauge invariant presentation using only the spinor bilinear scalar and pseudoscalar densities, and the vector and pseudovector currents, together with their quadratic Fierz relations. The internally produced vector potential is expressed via algebraic manipulation of the Dirac equation, as a rational function of the Fierz bilinears and first derivatives (valid on the support of the scalar density), which allows a gauge invariant vector potential to be defined. This leads to a Fierz bilinear formulation of the Maxwell tensor and of the Maxwel…
The paper covers known facts about the Dixmier trace (with some generalities about traces), the Wodzicki residue, and Connes' trace theorem, including two variants of proof of the latter. Action formulas are treated very sketchy, because they were considered in other lectures of the workshop.
We analyze the stress-energy tensor for the self-coupled Maxwell-Dirac system in the bilinear current formalism, using two independent approaches. The first method used is that attributed to Belinfante: starting from the spinor form of the action, the well-known canonical stress-energy tensor is augmented, by extending the Noether symmetry current to include contributions from the Lorentz group, to a manifestly symmetric form. This form admits a transcription to bilinear current form. The second method used is the variational derivation based on the covariant coupling to general relativity. Th…
We study the semi-classical ground states of the nonlinear Maxwell-Dirac system: \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} &\al\cdot\big(i\hbar\nabla+ q(x)\fa(x)\big) w-a\bt w -ωw - q(x)ϕ(x) w = P(x)g(\jdz{w}) w\\ &-Δϕ=q(x)\jdz{w}^2\\ &-Δ{A_k}=q(x)(α_k w)\cdot \bar w\ \ \ \ k=1,2,3 \end{aligned}\right. \] for $x\in\R^3$, where $\fa$ is the magnetic field, $ϕ$ is the electron field and $q$ describes the changing pointwise charge distribution. We develop a variational method to establish the existence of least energy solutions for $\hbar$ small. We also describe the concentration behavior of the solutions as $…
We construct a Darboux transformation for a class of two-dimensional Dirac systems at zero energy. Our starting equation features a position-dependent mass, a matrix potential, and an additional degree of freedom that can be interpreted either as a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane or a generalized Dirac oscillator interaction. We obtain a number of Darbouxtransformed Dirac equations for which the zero energy solutions are exactly known.
Solitary waves of nonlinear Dirac, Maxwell-Dirac and Klein-Gordon-Dirac equations are considered. We prove that the energy-momentum relation for solitary waves coincides with the Einstein energy-momentum relation for point particles.
The massless field of spin 1 is defined on the eight-dimensional configuration space; this space is a direct product of Minkowski space and of a two-dimensional complex sphere. Field equations for the spin-one field are derived from a Dirac-like Lagrangian separately for the translation group and Lorentz group parts. It is shown that a Dirac form of Maxwell equations (so-called Majorana-Oppenheimer formulation of electrodynamics) follows directly from the field equations of translation group part. The photon field is realized via Biedenharn type functions on the Poincaré group. This allows us …
Using the Pauli-Villars regularization and arguments from convex analysis, we construct solutions to the classical time-independent Maxwell equations in Dirac's vacuum, in the presence of small external electromagnetic sources. The vacuum is not an empty space, but rather a quantum fluctuating medium which behaves as a nonlinear polarizable material. Its behavior is described by a Dirac equation involving infinitely many particles. The quantum corrections to the usual Maxwell equations are nonlinear and nonlocal. Even if photons are described by a purely classical electromagnetic field, the re…
It is proved that there exist a vector representation of Dirac's spinor field and in one sense it is equivalent to biquaternion (i.e. complexified quaternion) representation. This can be considered as a generalization of Cartan's idea of triality to Dirac's spinors. In the vector representation the first order Dirac Lagrangian is dual equivalent to the two order Lagrangian of topologically massive gauge field. The potential field which corresponds to the Dirac field is obtained by using master (or parent) action approach. The novel gauge field is self-dual and contains both anti-symmetric Lie …
We consider a U(1)-invariant nonlinear Dirac equation in dimension $n=3$, interacting with itself via the mean field mechanism. We analyze the long-time asymptotics of solutions and prove that, under certain generic assumptions, each finite charge solution converges as $t\to\pm\infty$ to the two-dimensional set of all "nonlinear eigenfunctions" of the form $ϕ(x)e\sp{-iωt}$. This global attraction is caused by the nonlinear energy transfer from lower harmonics to the continuous spectrum and subsequent dispersive radiation. The research is inspired by Bohr's postulate on quantum transitions and …
It is shown that a spin-1/2 fermion coupled to the axially symmetric electromagnetic vector potential has the same matrix structure as that one for the planar Dirac oscillator. In particular, the planar Dirac oscillator can be interpreted as a charged particle minimally coupled to a transverse homogeneous magnetic field.
We study gauge transformations of Dirac structures and the relationship between gauge and Morita equivalences of Poisson manifolds. We describe how the symplectic structure of a symplectic groupoid is affected by a gauge transformation of the Poisson structure on its identity section, and prove that gauge-equivalent integrable Poisson structures are Morita equivalent. As an example, we study certain generic sets of Poisson structures on Riemann surfaces: we find complete gauge-equivalence invariants for such structures which, on the 2-sphere, yield a complete invariant of Morita equivalence.
An equation, we call Dirac gamma-equation, is introduced with the help of the mathematical tools connected with the Clifford algebra. This equation can be considered as a generalization of the Dirac equation for the electron. Some features of Dirac gamma- equation are investigated (plane waves, currents, canonical forms). Furthermore, on the basis of local gauge invariance regarding unitary group, a system of equations is introduced consisting of Dirac gamma-equation and the Yang-Mills or Maxwell equations. This system of equations describes a Dirac's field interacting with the Yang-Mills or M…
We consider the Dirac equation in flat Minkowski 3-space and rewrite it as the Maxwell equation in Minkowski 4-space with torsion. The torsion tensor is defined as the dual of the electromagnetic vector potential. Our model clearly distinguishes the electron and the positron without resorting to "negative frequencies": we produce a real scalar invariant (charge) which indicates whether we are looking at an electron or a positron. Another interesting feature of our model is that the free electron and positron are identified with gradient type solutions of the standard (torsion free) Maxwell equ…
We prove that the classical $W$-algebra associated to a nilpotent orbit in a simple Lie-algebra can be constructed by preforming bihamiltonian, Drinfeld-Sokolov or Dirac reductions. We conclude that the classical $W$-algebra depends only on the nilpotent orbit but not on the choice of a good grading or an isotropic subspace. In addition, using this result we prove again that the transverse Poisson structure to a nilpotent orbit is polynomial and we better clarify the relation between classical and finite $W$-algebras.
We study Maxwell's equation as a theory for smooth $k$-forms on globally hyperbolic spacetimes with timelike boundary as defined by Aké, Flores and Sanchez. In particular we start by investigating on these backgrounds the D'Alembert - de Rham wave operator $\Box_k$ and we highlight the boundary conditions which yield a Green's formula for $\Box_k$. Subsequently, we characterize the space of solutions of the associated initial and boundary value problem under the assumption that advanced and retarded Green operators do exist. This hypothesis is proven to be verified by a large class of boundary…
In this letter we seek to redress lingering misconceptions pertaining to the physicality of the chiral phase of Dirac bi-spinor fields. Demonstrably, the most general first-order partial differential equation for spinor wavefunctions that can be obtained in Minkowski spacetime is the Dirac-like equation which leaves both the mass and chiral angles as free parameters, the so-called Chiral Dirac Equation. Previously, claims have plauged the literature which assert that any attempt to incorporate chirality by such a generalization can be trivially reduced to the case the nominal Dirac Equation. T…
Three out of four complex components of the Dirac spinor can be algebraically eliminated from the Dirac equation (if some linear combination of electromagnetic fields does not vanish), yielding a partial differential equation of the fourth order for the remaining complex component. This equation is generally equivalent to the Dirac equation. Furthermore, following Schrödinger (Nature, \textbf{169}, 538 (1952)), the remaining component can be made real by a gauge transform, thus extending to the Dirac field the Schrödinger's conclusion that charged fields do not necessarily require complex repr…
