We provide a simple analytic formula in terms of elementary functions for the Laplace transform j_{l}(p) of the spherical Bessel function than that appearing in the literature, and we show that any such integral transform is a polynomial of order l in the variable p with constant coefficients for the first l-1 powers, and with an inverse tangent function of argument 1/p as the coefficient of the power l. We apply this formula for the Laplace transform of the memory function related to the Langevin equation in a one-dimensional Debye model.
We present a general approach for evaluating a large variety of three-dimensional Fourier transforms. The transforms considered include the useful cases of the Coulomb and dipole potentials, and include situations where the transforms are singular and involve terms proportional to the Dirac delta function. Our approach makes use of the Rayleigh expansion of exp(i p.r) in terms of spherical Bessel functions, and we study a number of integrals, including singular integrals, involving a power of the independent variable times a spherical Bessel function. We work through several examples of three-…
A few approaches are derived to calculate three-particle integrals which include spherical Bessel functions of the first and second kind, i.e., the $j_{\ell}(V r)$ and $n_{\ell}(V r)$ functions. Such integrals are important in applications to various problems known in atomic and nuclear physics. In particular, these integrals are needed in accurate computations of the photodetachment cross-section(s) of the negatively charged hydrogen ions.
This paper shows that the plane wave expansion can be a useful tool in obtaining analytical solutions to infinite integrals over spherical Bessel functions and the derivation of identites for these functions. The integrals are often used in nuclear scattering calculations, where an analytical result can provide an insight into the reaction mechanism. A technique is developed whereby an integral over several special functions which cannot be found in any standard integral table can be broken down into integrals that have existing analytical solutions
A new formula is derived that generalises an earlier result for the infinite integral over three spherical Bessel functions. The analytical result involves a finite sum over associated Legendre functions, $P_l^m(x)$, of degree $l$ and order $m$. The sum allows for values of $|m|$ that are greater than $l$. A generalisation for the associated Legendre functions to allow for any rational $m$ for a specific $l$ is also shown
The integrals $\threej{\Llo}{\Llt}{\Llth} {0}{0}{0}\,\int_0^\infty \,r^{\Llth+1}\,e^{-αr}\,j_\Llo(k_1r)\, j_\Llt(k_2r)\,dr$ and $\threej{\Llo}{\Llt}{\Llth} {0}{0}{0}\,\int_0^\infty \,r^{\Llth+2}\,e^{-αr}\,j_\Llo(k_1r)\, j_\Llt(k_2r)\,dr$ are evaluated analytically. The result is a finite sum over the associated Legendre function of the second kind.
We summarize the mathematical basis and practical hints for the explicit analytical computation of spectral sums that involve the eigenvalues of the Laplace operator in simple domains. Such spectral sums appear as spectral expansions of heat kernels, survival probabilities, first-passage time densities, and reaction rates in many diffusion-oriented applications. As the eigenvalues are determined by zeros of an appropriate linear combination of a Bessel function and its derivative, there are powerful analytical tools for computing such spectral sums. We discuss three main strategies: representa…
We find the high energy asymptotics for the singular Weyl--Titchmarsh m-functions and the associated spectral measures of perturbed spherical Schrödinger operators (also known as Bessel operators). We apply this result to establish an improved local Borg-Marchenko theorem for Bessel operators as well as uniqueness theorems for the radial quantum scattering problem with nontrivial angular momentum.
In this paper we investigate a general class of linear viscoelastic models whose creep and relaxation memory functions are expressed in Laplace domain by suitable ratios of modified Bessel functions of contiguous order. In time domain these functions are shown to be expressed by Dirichlet series (that is infinite Prony series). It follows that the corresponding creep compliance and relaxation modulus turn out to be characterized by infinite discrete spectra of retardation and relaxation time respectively. As a matter of fact, we get a class of viscoelastic models depending on a real parameter …
By careful exploration of separation of variables into the Laplacian in spherical coordinates, we obtain the extra delta-like singularity, elimination of which restricts the radial wave function at the origin. This constraint has the form of boundary condition for the radial Schrodinger equation.
A relevant result independently obtained by Rayleigh and Sneddon on an identity on series involving the zeros of Bessel functions of the first kind is derived by an alternative method based on Laplace transforms. Our method leads to a Bernstein function of time, expressed by Dirichlet series, that allows us to recover the Rayleigh-Sneddon sum. We also consider another method arriving at the same result based on a relevant formula by Calogero. Moreover, we also provide an electrical example in which this sum results to be extremely useful in order to recover the analytical expression for the re…
Non-local interactions are assumed for the deuteron with form factors $g_C(k)= j_0(b_1k)\,j_0(b_2k)$ for the central part responsible for the S-state and $g_T(k)= j_1(b_1k)\,j_1(b_2k)$ for the tensor part responsible for the D-state, where $b_1$ and $b_2$ are range parameters for the proton and neutron, respectively. The analytically obtained wavefunctions in coordinate space have different forms in three different regions. The inner most region is between $r=0$ and $r=b_2-b_1$ (assuming $b_2>b_1$), followed by a region between $r=b_2-b_1$ and $b_1+b_2$ and finally the region $r>b_1+b_2$. The …
In this paper we discuss the uniaxial propagation of transient waves within a semi-infinite viscoelastic Bessel medium. First, we provide the analytic expression for the response function of the material as we approach the wave-front. To do so, we take profit of a revisited version of the so called Buchen-Mainardi algorithm. Secondly, we provide an analytic expression for the long time behavior of the response function of the material. This result is obtained by means of the Tauberian theorems for the Laplace transform. Finally, we relate the obtained results to a peculiar model for fluid-fill…
In this paper we compute the coefficients of the heat kernel asymptotic expansion for Laplace operators acting on scalar functions defined on the so called spherical suspension (or Riemann cap) subjected to Dirichlet boundary conditions. By utilizing a contour integral representation of the spectral zeta function for the Laplacian on the spherical suspension we find its analytic continuation in the complex plane and its associated meromorphic structure. Thanks to the well known relation between the zeta function and the heat kernel obtainable via Mellin transform we compute the coefficients of…
A fundamental solution of Laplace's equation in three dimensions is expanded in harmonic functions that are separated in parabolic or elliptic cylinder coordinates. There are two expansions in each case which reduce to expansions of the Bessel functions $J_0(kr)$ or $K_0(kr)$, $r^2=(x-x_0)^2+(y-y_0)^2$, in parabolic and elliptic cylinder harmonics. Advantage is taken of the fact that $K_0(kr)$ is a fundamental solution and $J_0(kr)$ is the Riemann function of partial differential equations on the Euclidean plane.
Using the theory of orthogonal polynomials, their associated recursion relations and differential formulas we develop a method for evaluating new integrals. The method is illustrated by obtaining a closed-form expression for the value of an integral that involves the Bessel function and associated Laguerre polynomial. The result, which is given by Eq. (19) in the text, is written in terms of the Gegenbauer (ultra-spherical) polynomial.
We introduce a new class of solutions to Laplace equation, dubbed logopoles, and use them to derive a new relation between solutions in prolate spheroidal and spherical coordinates. The main novelty is that it involves spherical harmonics of the second kind, which have rarely been considered in physical problems because they are singular on the entire z axis. Logopoles, in contrast, have a finite line singularity like solid spheroidal harmonics, but are also closely related to solid spherical harmonics and can be viewed as an extension of the standard multipole ladder toward the negative multi…
Singular behavior of the Laplace operator in spherical coordinates is investigated. It is shown that in course of transition to the reduced radial wave function in the Schrodinger equation there appears additional term consisting the Dirac delta function, which was unnoted during the full history of physics and mathematics. The possibility of avoiding this contribution from the reduced radial equation is discussed. It is demonstrated that for this aim the necessary and sufficient condition is requirement the fast enough falling of the wave function at the origin. The result does not depend on …
As shown recently [Phys. Rev. E 95, 033307 (2017)], spheroidal harmonics expansions are well suited for the external solution of Laplace's equation for a point source outside a spherical object. Their intrinsic singularity matches the line singularity of the analytic continuation of the solution and the series solution converges much faster than the standard spherical harmonic solution. Here we extend this approach to internal potentials using the Kelvin transformation, i.e. radial inversion, of the spheroidal coordinate system. This transform converts the standard series solution involving re…
The solution in hyperspherical coordinates for $N$ dimensions is given for a general class of partial differential equations of mathematical physics including the Laplace, wave, heat and Helmholtz, Schrödinger, Klein-Gordon and telegraph equations and their combinations. The starting point is the Laplacian operator specified by the scale factors of hyperspherical coordinates. The general equation of mathematical physics is solved by separation of variables leading to the dependencies: (i) on time by the usual exponential function; (ii) on longitude by the usual sinusoidal function; (iii) on ra…
Due to the isotropy of $d$-dimensional hyperspherical space, one expects there to exist a spherically symmetric opposite antipodal fundamental solution for its corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator. The $R$-radius hypersphere ${\mathbf S}_R^d$ with $R>0$, represents a Riemannian manifold with positive-constant sectional curvature. We obtain a spherically symmetric opposite antipodal fundamental solution of Laplace's equation on this manifold in terms of its geodesic radius. We give several matching expressions for this fundamental solution including a definite integral over reciprocal powers…
We consider a random Gaussian model of Laplace eigenfunctions on the hemisphere satisfying the Dirichlet boundary conditions along the equator. For this model we find a precise asymptotic law for the corresponding zero density functions, in both short range (around the boundary) and long range (far away from the boundary) regimes. As a corollary, we were able to find a logarithmic negative bias for the total nodal length of this ensemble relatively to the rotation invariant model of random spherical harmonics. Jean Bourgain's research, and his enthusiastic approach to the nodal geometry of Lap…
In this paper we propose an approach of obtaining of N-dimensional spherical harmonics based exclusively on the methods of solutions of differential equations and the use of the special functions properties. We deduce the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the N-sphere, indicate some instructive relations for the metric, and demonstrate the procedure of separation of the variables. We show that the ordinary differential equations for every variable, except one, can be reduced to the Schrödinger equation (SE) with the symmetric Pöschl-Teller (SPT) potential well by means of certain substitutions. We …
By careful exploration of separation of variables into the Laplacian in spherical coordinates, we obtain the extra delta-like singularity, elimination of which restricts the radial wave function at the origin. This constraint has the form of boundary condition for the radial Schrodinger equation.
We investigate the singular Weyl-Titchmarsh m-function of perturbed spherical Schroedinger operators (also known as Bessel operators) under the assumption that the perturbation $q(x)$ satisfies $x q(x) \in L^1(0,1)$. We show existence plus detailed properties of a fundamental system of solutions which are entire with respect to the energy parameter. Based on this we show that the singular m-function belongs to the generalized Nevanlinna class and connect our results with the theory of super singular perturbations.
Using the multiplicities of the Laplace eigenspace on the sphere (the space of spherical harmonics) we endow the space with Gaussian probability measure. This induces a notion of random Gaussian spherical harmonics of degree $n$ having Laplace eigenvalue $E=n(n+1)$. We study the length distribution of the nodal lines of random spherical harmonics. It is known that the expected length is of order $n$. It is natural to conjecture that the variance should be of order $n$, due to the natural scaling. Our principal result is that, due to an unexpected cancelation, the variance of the nodal length o…
One of the most efficient methods to obtain the vacuum expectation values for the physical observables in the Casimir effect is based on the using the Abel-Plana summation formula. This allows to derive the regularized quantities by manifestly cutoff independent way and to present them in the form of strongly converging integrals. However the applications of Abel- Plana formula in usual form is restricted by simple geometries when the eigenmodes have a simple dependence on quantum numbers. The author generalized the Abel-Plana formula which essentially enlarges its application range. Based on …
