The solution in hyperspherical coordinates for $N$ dimensions is given for a general class of partial differential equations of mathematical physics including the Laplace, wave, heat and Helmholtz, Schrödinger, Klein-Gordon and telegraph equations and their combinations. The starting point is the Laplacian operator specified by the scale factors of hyperspherical coordinates. The general equation of mathematical physics is solved by separation of variables leading to the dependencies: (i) on time by the usual exponential function; (ii) on longitude by the usual sinusoidal function; (iii) on radius by Bessel functions of order generally distinct from cylindrical or spherical Bessel functions; (iv) on one latitude by associated Legendre functions; (v) on the remaining latitudes by an extension, namely the hyperspherical associated Legendre functions. The original associated Legendre functions are a particular case of the Gaussian hypergeometric functions, and the hyperspherical associated Legendre functions are also a more general particular case of the Gaussian hypergeometric functions so that it is not necessary to consider extended Gaussian hypergeometric functions.
Hyperspherical Functions and Harmonic Analysis on the Lorentz Group
Matrix elements of spinor and principal series representations of the Lorentz group are studied in the basis of complex angular momentum (helicity basis). It is shown that matrix elements are expressed via hyperspherical functions (relativistic spherical functions). In essence, the hyperspherical functions present itself a four-dimensional (with respect to a pseudo-euclidean metrics of Minkowski spacetime) generalization of the usual three-dimensional spherical functions. An explicit form of the hyperspherical functions is given. The hypespherical functions of the spinor representations are re…
Due to the isotropy of $d$-dimensional hyperspherical space, one expects there to exist a spherically symmetric opposite antipodal fundamental solution for its corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator. The $R$-radius hypersphere ${\mathbf S}_R^d$ with $R>0$, represents a Riemannian manifold with positive-constant sectional curvature. We obtain a spherically symmetric opposite antipodal fundamental solution of Laplace's equation on this manifold in terms of its geodesic radius. We give several matching expressions for this fundamental solution including a definite integral over reciprocal powers…
We study either fully visible and restricted Boltzmann machines with sub-Gaussian random weights and spherical or Gaussian priors. We prove the free energies of the spherical and Gaussian models are related by a Legendre transformation. Incidentally our analysis brings also a new purely variational derivation of the free energy of the spherical models.
Trigonometric formulas are derived for certain families of associated Legendre functions of fractional degree and order, for use in approximation theory. These functions are algebraic, and when viewed as Gauss hypergeometric functions, belong to types classified by Schwarz, with dihedral, tetrahedral, or octahedral monodromy. The dihedral Legendre functions are expressed in terms of Jacobi polynomials. For the last two monodromy types, an underlying `octahedral' polynomial, indexed by the degree and order and having a non-classical kind of orthogonality, is identified, and recurrences for it a…
The spherically symmetric potential $a \,δ(r-r_0)+b\,δ' (r-r_0)$ is generalised for the $d$-dimensional space as a characterisation of a unique selfadjoint extension of the free Hamiltonian. For this extension of the Dirac delta, the spectrum of negative, zero and positive energy states is studied in $d\geq 2$, providing numerical results for the expectation value of the radius as a function of the free parameters of the potential. Remarkably, only if $d=2$ the $δ$-$δ'$ potential for arbitrary $a>0$ admits a bound state with zero angular momentum.
We develop the theory of causal radiation Green functions on hyperbolic and hyperspherical spaces using a constructive approach based on generalized Mehler-Fock transforms. This approach focuses for $H^d$ on the kernel of the transformation expressed in terms of hyperbolic angles $θ$ with $0\leqθ<\infty$. The kernel provides an explicit representation for the generalized delta distribution which acts as the source term for the radiation, and allows easy implementation of the causality or retardation condition and determination of the Green function. We obtain the corresponding kernel distribut…
This paper is a contribution to the study of the relations between special functions, Lie algebras and rigged Hilbert spaces. The discrete indices and continuous variables of special functions are in correspondence with the representations of their algebra of symmetry, that induce discrete and continuous bases coexisting on a rigged Hilbert space supporting the representation. Meaningful operators are shown to be continuous on the spaces of test vectors and its dual. Here, the chosen special functions, called "Algebraic Jacobi Functions" are related to the Jacobi polynomials and the Lie algebr…
The correlation entropy as a functional of radial distribution function $g(r)$ (or the total correlation function $h(r)=g(r)-1$) in classical fluids has been obtained from the second Legendre transform of the grand potential. We focus on the correlation entropy difference between the two typical functionals in the mean spherical approximation (MSA) and the hypernetted chain (HNC) approximation. While the entropy functional difference between these approximations is of a simple form, the diagrammatic approaches in the liquid state theory are quite different from each other. Here we clarified th…
We introduce an extended Kepler-Coulomb quantum model in spherical coordinates. The Schrödinger equation of this Hamiltonian is solved in these coordinates and it is shown that the wave functions of the system can be expressed in terms of Laguerre, Legendre and exceptional Jacobi polynomials (of hypergeometric type). We construct ladder and shift operators based on the corresponding wave functions and obtain their recurrence formulas. These recurrence relations are used to construct higher-order, algebraically independent integrals of motion to prove superintegrability of the Hamiltonian. The …
Across many areas of physics, multipole expansions are used to simplify problems, solve differential equations, calculate integrals, and process experimental data. Spherical harmonics are the commonly used basis functions for a multipole expansion. However, they are not the preferred basis when the expression to be expanded is written as an explicit function of the unit vector on the sphere. Here, we revisit a different set of basis functions that are well-suited for multipole expansions of such vectorized angular functions. These basis functions are known in the literature by a variety of dif…
Logopoles are a recently proposed class of solutions to Laplace's equation with intriguing links to both solid spheroidal and solid spherical harmonics. They share the same finite line singularity with the former and provide a generalization of the latter as multipoles of negative order. In [Phys. Rev. Res. 1, 033213 (2019)], we introduced and discussed the properties and applications of these new functions in the special case of axi-symmetric problems (with azimuthal index $m=0$). This allowed us to focus on the physical properties without the added mathematical complications. Here we expand …
