Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of quench condensed, superconducting, ultrathin Bi films in a magnetic field are reported. These show hysteresis for all films, grown both with and without thin Ge underlayers. Films on Ge underlayers, close to superconductor-insulator transition, show a peak in the critical current, indicating a structural transformation of the vortex solid. These underlayers, used to make the films more homogeneous, are found to be more effective in pinning the vortices. The upper critical fields ($B_{c2}$) of these films are determined from the resistive transitions in perpendicular magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field is found to differ significantly from Ginzburg-Landau theory, after modifications for disorder.
Ultrathin MgB2 superconducting films with a thickness down to 7.5 nm are epitaxially grown on (0001) Al2O3 substrate by hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition method. The films are phase-pure, oxidation-free and continuous. The 7.5 nm thin film shows a Tc(0) of 34 K, which is so far the highest Tc(0) reported in MgB2 with the same thickness. The critical current density of ultrathin MgB2 films below 10 nm is demonstrated for the first time as Jc ~ 10^6 A cm^{-2} for the above 7.5 nm sample at 16 K. Our results reveal the excellent superconducting properties of ultrathin MgB2 films with thic…
We report scanning tunneling microscopy investigation on epitaxial ultrathin films of pyrite-type copper disulfide. Layer by layer growth of CuS2 films with a preferential orientation of (111) on SrTiO3(001) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ substrates is achieved by molecular beam epitaxy growth. For ultrathin films on both kinds of substrates, we observed symmetric tunneling gap around Fermi level that persists up to ~ 15 K. The tunneling gap degrades with either increasing temperature or increasing thickness, suggesting new matter states at the extreme two dimensional limit.
We present low-temperature scanning electron microscopy (LTSEM) investigations of superconducting microbridges made from ultrathin NbN films as used for hot electron bolometers. LTSEM probes the thermal structure within the microbridges under various dc current bias conditions, either via electron-beam-induced generation of an unstable hotspot, or via the beam-induced growth of a stable hotspot. Such measurements reveal inhomogeneities on a micron scale, which may be due to spatial variations in the NbN film or film-interface properties. Comparison with model calculations for the stable hotspo…
Magnetoresistance oscillations were observed on networks of superconducting ultrathin Nb nanowires presenting evidences of either thermal or quantum activated phase slips. The magnetic transport data, discussed in the framework of different scenarios, reveal that the system behaves coherently in the temperature range where the contribution of the fluctuations is important.
Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of quench condensed, superconducting, ultrathin $Bi$ films in a magnetic field are reported. These I-V's show hysteresis for all films, grown both with and without thin $Ge$ underlayers. Films on Ge underlayers, close to superconductor-insulator transition (SIT), show a peak in the critical current, indicating a structural transformation of the vortex solid (VS). These underlayers, used to make the films more homogeneous, are found to be more effective in pinning the vortices. The upper critical fields (B$_{c2}$) of these films are determined from the resi…
By capacitively charging an underdoped ultrathin La2-xSrxCuO4 film with an electric field applied across a gate insulator with a high dielectric constant, relative changes of the areal superfluid density n_{s\Box}$ of unprecedented strength were observed in measurements of the film kinetic inductance. Although $n_{s\Box}$ appears to be substantially reduced by disorder, the data provide, for the first time on the same sample, direct compelling evidence for the Uemura relation $T_{c} \propto n_{s\Box}(T=0)$ in the underdoped regime of copper-oxide superconductors.
The transition from insulator to superconductor was achieved in the non-superconducting FeSe ultrathin film via simple Mg coating technique in present work. It was found that in non-superconducting FeSe ultrathin film without Mg coating, insulating \b{eta}-Fe1-xSe phase with iron-vacancy disorders is the main phase and more likely to be the parent phase of FeSe superconducting system. Proper Mg coating on the surface of FeSe films can lead to Mg entering FeSe crystal lattice to fill up these Fe vacancies rather than replace Fe. Simultaneously, additional electron doping is introduced and the e…
We have patterned a hexagonal array of nano-scale holes into a series of ultrathin, superconducting Bi/Sb films with transition temperatures 2.65 K $<T_{co} < $5 K. These regular perforations give the films a phase-sensitive periodic response to an applied magnetic field. By measuring this response in their resistive transitions, $R(T)$, we are able to distinguish regimes in which fluctuations of the amplitude, both the amplitude and phase, and the phase of the superconducting order parameter dominate the transport. The portion of $R(T)$ dominated by amplitude fluctuations is larger in lower $…
We study the magnetic field induced superconductor-metal transition (SMT) in ultrathin crystalline Pb films. By performing ultralow temperature transport measurement, the divergent critical exponent as an indication of quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) is observed when approaching zero temperature quantum critical point. Distinctively, the phase boundary of SMT exhibits an anomalous behavior in low temperature regime that the onset critical field decreases with decreasing temperatures, which distinguishes our observation from earlier reports of QGS in various two-dimensional superconductors.…
Among the recently discovered iron-based superconductors, ultrathin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO3 substrates have uniquely evolved into a high superconducting-transition-temperature (TC) material. The mechanisms for the high-TC superconductivity are ongoing debate mainly with the superconducting gap characterized with in-situ analysis for FeSe films grown by bottom-up molecular-beam epitaxy. Here, we demonstrate the alternative access to investigate the high-TC superconductivity in ultrathin FeSe with top-down electrochemical etching technique in three-terminal transistor configuration. In add…
We use sub-Kelvin scanning tunneling spectroscopy to investigate the suppression of superconductivity in homogeneously disordered ultrathin MoC films. We observe that the superconducting state remains spatially homogeneous even on the films of 3 nm thickness. The vortex imaging suggests the global phase coherence in our films. Upon decreasing thickness, when the superconducting transition drops from 8.5 to 1.2 K, the superconducting energy gap follows perfectly Tc. All this is pointing to a two-stage fermionic scenario of the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) via a metallic state as an…
The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition is expected to have a clear signature on the specific heat. The singularity at the transition temperature $T_{BKT}$ is predicted to be immeasurable, and a broad non-universal peak is expected at $T>T_{BKT}$. Up to date this has not been observed in two-dimensional superconductors. We use a unique highly sensitive technique to measure the specific heat of ultrathin Pb films. We find that thick films exhibit a specific heat jump at $T_C$ that is consistent with BCS theory. As the film thickness is reduced below the superconducting coherence le…
The parallel-magnetic-field $H_\parallel$ dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is studied for ultrathin films of In, Bi, and Al grown on GaAs(110). In the case of In films in the monolayer regime, $T_c$ exhibits a quadratic-like $H_\parallel$ dependence, which is one order of magnitude stronger than that previously observed in monolayer Pb films by the present authors [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 057005 (2013)]. The results are well reproduced by a model developed for an inhomogeneous two-dimensional superconducting state in the presence of a moderate Rashba spin-orbit inte…
We derive an analytic expression for the temperature dependent critical magnetic field parallel to ultrathin superconducting films with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Thereby we cover the range from small to large spin-orbit interactions $λ$ compared with the gap parameter $Δ_0$. We find that at a critical spin-orbit energy $λ_c$ a first-order phase transition takes place at which the pairing momentum of the Cooper pairs changes discontinuously. We speculate that this might give raise to new phenomena. With increasing $λ/Δ_0$, the pair formation changes from interband to intraband pairing. For…
Superconducting quantum phase transitions tuned by disorder (d), paramagnetic impurity (MI) and perpendicular magnetic field (B) have been studied in homogeneously disordered ultrathin a-Pb films. The MI-tuned transition is characterized by progressive suppression of the critical temperature to zero and a continuous transition to a weakly insulating normal state with increasing MI density. In all important aspects, the d-tuned transition closely resembles the MI-tuned transition and both appear to be fermionic in nature. The B-tuned transition is qualitatively different and probably bosonic. I…
A parallel field negative magnetoresistance has been found in quench-condensed ultrathin films of amorphous bismuth in the immediate vicinity of the thickness-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. The effect appears to be a signature of quantum fluctuations of the order parameter associated with the quantum critical point.
We develop the multi-band BCS model of superconductivity in the ultrathin films using the orthogonal tight-binding approximation for constructing the electron wavefunctions. This allows for relatively simple determination of the band structure near the Fermi level as well as the electron-electron interaction matrix elements of the BCS type. The model is applied to the ultrathin MgB$_2$(0001) films, for which the critical temperature values are calculated in the thickness range 2...10 MgB$_2$ layers. The importance of the boundary conditions is emphasised, as either boron or magnesium layers ma…
Measurements of resistance vs. temperature have been carried out on a sequence of quench-condensed ultrathin films of amorphous bismuth (a-Bi). The resistance below about 0.1K was found to be temperature independent in a range of films with thicknesses spanning the superconductor-to-insulator transition that would be inferred by analyzing data obtained above 0.14K. Film magnetoresistance was temperature dependent in the same temperature range over which the resistance was temperature independent. This implies that the low temperature metallic regime is intrinsic, and not a consequence of failu…
Electron transport and tunneling across the superconductor-insulator (SI) transition have been measured simultaneously for quench-condensed ultrathin amorphous beryllium films. The anomalous negative magnetoresistance previously observed in insulating films disappears when Mn impurities are introduced to the films, restoring a rather clean Efros-Shklovskii type hopping behavior. The combination of transport and tunneling data allows us to determine, independently and up to a constant on the order of unity, the localization length, ξ_{L}, and the dielectric constant, κ, for the films. As the no…
Based on the Efros-Shklovskii behavior observed in electron transport and tunneling, we have determined, independently and up to a constant on the order of unity, the localization length and the dielectric constant for quench-condensed ultrathin amorphous beryllium films. As the normal-state sheet resistance of the films at 20 K is reduced with increasing film thickness, the localization length increases exponentially. The superconductor-insulator transition occurs when the localization length crosses the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length. We discuss the implication of these results on a number…
Ultrathin FeSe films grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates are a recent milestone in atomic material engineering due to their important role in understanding unconventional superconductivity in Fe-based materials. Using femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we study phonon frequencies in ultrathin FeSe/SrTiO$_{3}$ films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. After optical excitation, we observe periodic modulations of the photoelectron spectrum as a function of pump-probe delay for 1 unit cell, 3 unit cell, and 60 unit cell thick FeSe films. The frequencies of the coherent inten…
Near the superconductor-insulator (S-I) transition, quench-condensed ultrathin Be films show a large magnetoconductance which is highly anisotropic in the direction of the applied field. Film conductance can drop as much as seven orders of magnitude in a weak perpendicular field (< 1 T), but is insensitive to a parallel field in the same field range. We believe that this negative magnetoconductance is due to the field de-phasing of the superconducting pair wavefunction. This idea enables us to extract the finite superconducting phase coherence length in nearly superconducting films. Our data i…
A recent letter [Lin & Goldman, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 127003 (2011)] has presented experimental data in highly disordered thin films, which were interpreted as a quantum phase transition, an intriguing and surprising result for this system. Here we present a first-principles calculation which captures the observed phenomena, and provides an alternative mechanism of activated transport through the disordered landscape rather than a quantum phase transition.
Nonlinear I-V characteristics have been observed in insulating quench-condensed films which are locally superconducting. We suggest an interpretation in terms of the enhancement of conduction by the depinning of a Cooper pair charge density wave, Cooper pair crystal, or Cooper pair glass that may characterize the insulating regime of locally superconducting films. We propose that this is a more likely description than the Coulomb blockade or charge-anticharge unbinding phenomena.
Dramatic glass-like behavior involving nonexponential relaxation of in-plane electrical conduction, has been induced in quench-condensed ultrathin amorphous Bi films by the application of a parallel magnetic field. The effect is found over a narrow range of film thicknesses well on the insulating side of the thickness-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. The simplest explanation of this field-induced glass-like behavior is a Pauli principle blocking of hopping transport between singly occupied states when electrons are polarized by the magnetic field. A second explanation involving weak …
The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in FeSe/STO has trigged great research interest to reveal a range of exotic physical phenomena in this novel material. Here we present a temperature dependent magnetotransport measurement for ultrathin FeSe/STO films with different thickness and protection layers. Remarkably, a surprising linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is observed around the superconducting transition temperatures but absent otherwise. The experimental LMR can be reproduced by magnetotransport calculations based on a model of magnetic field dependent disorder induced by spin …
We report an experimental study of quench condensed ($2K\le T \le 15K$) disordered ultrathin films of {\rm Bi} where localisation effects and superconductivity compete. Experiments are done with different substrates and/or different underlayers. Quasi-free standing films of {\rm Bi}, prepared by quenching {\rm Bi} vapours onto solid {\rm Xe}, are also studied. The results show a dependence of the transport properties both on the dielectric constant of the substrate/underlayer as well as the temperature of quench condensation. RHEED studies indicate that quantum size effects are important in th…
Recent studies suggests that in disordered ultrathin films superconducting (SC) state may be intrinsically inhomogeneous. Here we investigate the nature of SC state in ultrathin Nb films, of thickness $d$ ranging from 1.2 nm to 20 nm, which undergo a transition from amorphous to polycrystalline structure at the thickness $d \simeq 3.3$ nm. We show that the properties of SC state are very different in polycrystalline and amorphous films. The upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) is orbitally limited in the first case, and paramagnetically limited in the latter. The magnetic field induced superconduct…
X-ray photoemission spectroscopy has been used to investigate the depth dependent crystal structures and chemical compositions of sequentially chemical-etched YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) ultrathin film superconductors. In the near-interface region the crystal structure is severely oxygen deficient and of tetragonal symmetry. We consider this a revelation of retarded oxygen diffusion into the O(1) sites during the post-deposition annealing in the presence of interface mismatch strain. Near the free surface, the oxygen-deficiency was much alleviated because of the partial strain relaxation and the crysta…
Recent emergence of two-dimensional (2D) crystalline superconductors has provided a promising platform to investigate novel quantum physics and potential applications. To reveal essential quantum phenomena therein, ultralow temperature transport investigation on high quality ultrathin superconducting films is critically required, although it has been quite challenging experimentally. Here we report a systematic transport study on the ultrathin crystalline PdTe2 films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Interestingly, a new type of Ising superconductivity in 2D centrosymmetric materials is r…
The electrical transport properties of ultrathin YBCO films have been modified using an electric double layer transistor configuration employing an ionic liquid. The films were grown on SrTiO3 substrates using high pressure oxygen sputtering. A clear evolution from superconductor to insulator was observed in nominally 7 unit cell thick films. Using a finite size scaling analysis, curves of resistance versus temperature, R(T), over the temperature range from 6K to 22K were found to collapse onto a single scaling function, which suggests the the presence of a quantum critical point. However the …
