Sensing-aided beam prediction could cut the beam-training overhead of millimeter-wave vehicular links, and two design choices could strengthen a radar-only predictor: a Doppler-resolved input and knowledge distilled from a camera during training. We measure what each is worth in received power rather than in top-1 accuracy, whose differences of a few points amount to only tenths of a decibel. We use real DeepSense 6G measurements, mainly at one roadside site, and one convolutional-recurrent predictor family evaluated open-loop up to 0.67 s ahead. Adding a range-Doppler map to the range-angle map lowers the mean beam-selection loss by 0.28 dB (95% bootstrap interval [0.14, 0.41]). The gain comes from the Doppler content, not from the extra input, and replicates, as pre-specified, at a second base station, although holding the last measured beam beats both predictors there. Cross-modal knowledge distillation from a motion-mask vision-radar teacher, by contrast, changes received power by -0.01 dB ([-0.07, +0.06]). The tested teacher, student, fusion and distillation variants show the same null in the metric each was scored on. Where distillation helps, in an exploratory run with few training passes, a radar-only teacher trained on all training passes reproduces most of the gain. For this predictor family and the full training set, the measurable gain at the link comes from Doppler-resolved radar content; no tested route for transferring training-only visual information adds a resolved gain.
Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is one viable solution to support Gbps sensor data sharing in vehicular networks. The use of large antenna arrays at mmWave and high mobility in vehicular communication make it challenging to design fast beam alignment solutions. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that learns the channel angle-of-departure (AoD) statistics at a base station (BS) and uses this information to efficiently acquire channel measurements. Our framework integrates online learning for compressive sensing (CS) codebook learning and the optimized codebook is used for CS-bas…
In this paper, we present a 2D target localization method using two low cost and compact Mellimeter Wave Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (MMW-FMCW) radars. To create a 2D map we exploit the bilateration method followed by a multi-target tracking block to remove the ghost targets. Finally, we present experimental results based on the data gathered from two FMCW radars operating at $\rm 79 \;GHz$.
Millimeter wave channels exhibit structure that allows beam alignment with fewer channel measurements than exhaustive beam search. From a compressed sensing (CS) perspective, the received channel measurements are usually obtained by multiplying a CS matrix with a sparse representation of the channel matrix. Due to the constraints imposed by analog processing, designing CS matrices that efficiently exploit the channel structure is, however, challenging. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep learning technique to design a structured CS matrix that is well suited to the underlying channel …
Millimeter wave (MmWave) systems are vulnerable to blockages, which cause signal drop and link outage. One solution is to deploy reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to add a strong non-line-of-sight path from the transmitter to receiver. To achieve the best performance, the location of the deployed RIS should be optimized for a given site, considering the distribution of potential users and possible blockers. In this paper, we find the optimal location, height and downtilt of RIS working in a realistic vehicular scenario. Because of the proximity between the RIS and the vehicles, and th…
Radio-based vehicular simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) aims to localize vehicles while mapping the landmarks in the environment. We propose a sequence of three Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (PMBM) based SLAM filters, which handle the entire SLAM problem in a theoretically optimal manner. The complexity of the three proposed SLAM filters is progressively reduced while sustaining high accuracy by deriving SLAM density approximation with the marginalization of nuisance parameters (either vehicle state or data association). Firstly, the PMBM SLAM filter serves as the foundation, for …
The wide bandwidths available at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies have offered exciting potential to wireless communication systems and radar alike. Communication systems can offer higher rates and support more users with mmWave bands while radar systems can benefit from higher resolution captures. This leads to the possibility that portions of mmWave spectrum will be occupied by both communication and radar (e.g., 60 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band). This potential coexistence motivates the work of this paper, in which we present a design that can enable simultaneous, i…
5G new radio (NR) provides new opportunities for accurate positioning from a single reference station: large bandwidth combined with multiple antennas, at both the base station and user sides, allows for unparalleled angle and delay resolution. Nevertheless, positioning quality is affected by multipath and clock biases. We study, in terms of performance bounds and algorithms, the ability to localize a vehicle in the presence of multipath and unknown user clock bias. We find that when a sufficient number of paths is present, a vehicle can still be localized thanks to redundancy in the geometric…
As a cost-effective alternative, hybrid analog and digital beamforming architecture is a promising scheme for millimeter wave (mmWave) system. This paper considers two hybrid beamforming architectures, i.e. the partially-connected and fully-connected structures, for mmWave dual-function radar communication (DFRC) system, where the transmitter communicates with the downlink users and detects radar targets simultaneously. The optimization problems are formulated by minimizing a weighted summation of radar and communication performance, subject to constant modulus and power constraints. To tackle…
Millimeter wave sensing has recently attracted a lot of attention given its environmental robust nature. In situations where visual sensors like cameras fail to perform, mmwave radars can be used to achieve reliable performance. However, because of the poor scattering performance and lack of texture in millimeter waves, radars can not be used in several situations that require precise identification of objects. In this paper, we take insight from camera fiducials which are very easily identifiable by the camera, and present R-fiducial tags, which smartly augment the current infrastructure to e…
This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of milliMap, a single-chip millimetre wave (mmWave) radar based indoor mapping system targetted towards low-visibility environments to assist in emergency response. A unique feature of milliMap is that it only leverages a low-cost, off-the-shelf mmWave radar, but can reconstruct a dense grid map with accuracy comparable to lidar, as well as providing semantic annotations of objects on the map. milliMap makes two key technical contributions. First, it autonomously overcomes the sparsity and multi-path noise of mmWave signals by combi…
Efficient Dual-Blind Deconvolution for Joint Radar-Communication Systems Using ADMM: Enhancing Channel Estimation and Signal Recovery in 5G mmWave Networks
In this paper, we develop a predictive beamforming scheme based on the dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) technique, where the road-side units estimates the motion parameters of vehicles exploiting the echoes of the DFRC signals. Compared to the conventional feedback-based beam tracking approaches, the proposed method can reduce the signaling overhead and improve the tracking performance. A novel message passing algorithm is proposed, which yields a near optimal performance achieved by the maximum a posteriori estimation. Simulation results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed …
Millimeter-wave radars are being increasingly integrated into commercial vehicles to support advanced driver-assistance system features. A key shortcoming for present-day vehicular radar imaging is poor azimuth resolution (for side-looking operation) due to the form factor limits on antenna size and placement. In this paper, we propose a solution via a new multiple-input and multiple-output synthetic aperture radar (MIMO-SAR) imaging technique, that applies coherent SAR principles to vehicular MIMO radar to improve the side-view (angular) resolution. The proposed 2-stage hierarchical MIMO-SAR …
In this paper, we propose a beamforming design for dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) systems at the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, where hybrid beamforming and sub-arrayed MIMO radar techniques are jointly exploited. We assume that a base station (BS) is serving a user equipment (UE) located in a Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) channel, which in the meantime actively detects multiple targets located in a Line-of-Sight (LoS) channel. Given the optimal communication beamformer and the desired radar beampattern, we propose to design the analog and digital beamformers under non-convex constant-m…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) has been claimed to be the only viable solution for high-bandwidth vehicular communications. However, frequent channel estimation and beamforming required to provide a satisfactory quality of service limits mmWave for vehicular communications. In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation and beam tracking framework for mmWave communications in a vehicular network setting. For channel estimation, we propose an algorithm termed robust adaptive multi-feedback (RAF) that achieves comparable estimation performance as existing channel estimation algorithms, with a si…
Vehicular communications essentially support automotive applications for safety and infotainment. For this reason, industry leaders envision an enhanced role of vehicular communications in the fifth generation of mobile communications technology. Over the years, the number of vehicle-mounted sensors has increased steadily, which potentially leads to more volume of critical data communications in a short time. Also, emerging applications such as remote/autonomous driving and infotainment such as high-definition movie streaming require data-rates on the order of multiple Gbit/s. Such high data-r…

Mobility scenarios involving short contact times pose a challenge for high bandwidth data transfer between autonomous vehicles and roadside base stations (BS). Millimeter wave bands are a viable solution as they offer enormous bandwidth in the 60GHz band with several Gbps data transfer rates. However, beamforming is used as a default mode in this band, which requires accurate and continuous alignment under relative motion. We propose a method in which an off-the-shelf IEEE 802.11ad WiFi router is configured to serve as the BS as well as a radar exploiting special structure of 802.11ad preamble…

Millimeter-wave (mmwave) communication represents a potential solution to capacity shortage in vehicular networks. However, effective beam alignment between senders and receivers requires accurate knowledge of the vehicles' position for fast beam steering, which is often impractical to obtain in real time. We address this problem by leveraging the traffic signals regulating vehicular mobility: as an example, we may coordinate beams with red traffic lights, as they correspond to higher vehicle densities and lower speeds. To evaluate our intuition, we propose a tractable, yet accurate, mmwave co…
mmWave radars have recently gathered significant attention as a means to track human movement within indoor environments. Widely adopted Kalman filter tracking methods experience performance degradation when the underlying movement is highly non-linear or presents long-term temporal dependencies. As a solution, in this article we design a convolutional-recurrent Neural Network (NN) that learns to accurately estimate the position and the velocity of the monitored subjects from high dimensional radar data. The NN is trained as a probabilistic model, utilizing a Gaussian negative log-likelihood l…
The high overhead of the beam training process is the main challenge when establishing mmWave communication links, especially for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) scenarios where the channels are highly dynamic. In this paper, we obtain prior information to speed up the beam training process by implementing two deep neural networks (DNNs) that realize radar-to-communication (R2C) channel information translation in a vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) system. Specifically, the first DNN is built to extract the information from the radar azimuth power spectrum (APS) to reconstruct the communication APS,…

The integrated approach includes the synergy of 3D Vector Antenna with the novel time-of-arrival and angle-of-arrival estimate methods for accurate positioning, combining the sensing on the sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrum for the enhanced non-cooperative surveillance. For the positioning scope, both uplink and downlink 5G reference signals are investigated and their performance is evaluated. Fo…
Mobility management is a major challenge for the wide-spread deployment of millimeter-wave (mmWave) cellular networks. In particular, directional beamforming in mmWave devices renders high-speed mobility support very complex. This complexity, however, is not limited to system design but also the performance estimation and evaluation. Hence, some have turned their attention to stochastic modeling of mmWave vehicular communication to derive closed-form expressions characterizing the coverage and rate behavior of the network. In this article, we model and analyze the beam management for mmWave ve…
Configuring millimeter wave links following a conventional beam training protocol, as the one proposed in the current cellular standard, introduces a large communication overhead, specially relevant in vehicular systems, where the channels are highly dynamic. In this paper, we propose the use of a passive radar array to sense automotive radar transmissions coming from multiple vehicles on the road, and a radar processing chain that provides information about a reduced set of candidate beams for the links between the road-infrastructure and each one of the vehicles. This prior information can b…

Millimetre-wave (mmWave) radars can generate 3D point clouds to represent objects in the scene. However, the accuracy and density of the generated point cloud can be lower than a laser sensor. Although researchers have used mmWave radars for various applications, there are few quantitative evaluations on the quality of the point cloud generated by the radar and there is a lack of a standard on how this quality can be assessed. This work aims to fill the gap in the literature. A radar simulator is built to evaluate the most common data processing chains of 3D point cloud construction and to exa…
Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) radar sensors are gaining popularity for their robust sensing and increasing imaging capabilities. However, current radar signal processing is hardware specific, which makes it impossible to build sensor agnostic solutions. OpenRadar serves as an interface to prototype, research, and benchmark solutions in a modular manner. This enables creating software processing stacks in a way that has not yet been extensively explored. In the wake of increased AI adoption, OpenRadar can accelerate the growth of the combined fields of radar and AI. The OpenRadar API was released on…

In millimeter-wave (mmWave) dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) systems, hybrid beamforming (HBF) is recognized as a promising technique utilizing a limited number of radio frequency chains. In this work, in the presence of extended target and clutters, a HBF design based on the subarray connection architecture is proposed for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) DFRC system. In this HBF, the double-phase-shifter (DPS) structure is embedded to further increase the design flexibility. We derive the communication spectral efficiency (SE) and radar signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio …
In intelligent transportation systems (ITS), vehicles are expected to feature with advanced applications and services which demand ultra-high data rates and low-latency communications. For that, the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication has been emerging as a very promising solution. However, incorporating the mmWave into ITS is particularly challenging due to the high mobility of vehicles and the inherent sensitivity of mmWave beams to dynamic blockages. This article addresses these problems by developing an optimal beam association framework for mmWave vehicular networks under high mobility…
Due to their shorter operating range and large bandwidth, automotive radars can resolve many reflections from their targets of interest, mainly vehicles. This calls for the use of extended-target models in place of simpler and more widely-adopted point-like target models. However, despite some preliminary work, the fundamental connection between the radar's accuracy as a function of the target vehicle state (range, orientation, shape) and radar properties remains largely unknown for extended targets. In this work, we first devise a mathematically tractable analytical model for a vehicle with a…
