The dimensionality of entanglement, quantified by the Schmidt number, is a valuable resource for a wide range of quantum information processing tasks. In this work, we introduce the notion of the absolute Schmidt number, referring to states whose Schmidt number cannot be increased by any global unitary transformation. We provide a characterization of the set of arbitrary-dimensional states whose Schmidt number is invariant under all global unitaries. Our approach enables us to develop both witness-based and moment-based techniques to detect nonabsolute Schmidt number states which could provide significant operational advantages through Schmidt number enhancement by global unitaries. We next formulate two resource-theoretic measures of nonabsolute Schmidt number states, based respectively on Schmidt number witness and robustness, and demonstrate an operational utility of the latter in a channel discrimination task. Finally, we extend our analysis to quantum channels by introducing a new class of channels that possess the absolute Schmidt number property. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for identifying when a channel has the absolute Schmidt number property, confining our analysis to the class of covariant channels.
The class of local invertible operations is defined and the invariance of entanglement under such operations is established. For the quantification of entanglement, universal entanglement measures are defined, which are invariant under local invertible transformations. They quantify entanglement in a very general sense. It is shown that the Schmidt number is a universal entanglement measure, which is most important for the general amount of entanglement. For special applications, pseudo-measures are defined to quantify the useful entanglement for a certain quantum task. The entanglement quanti…
Separability and entanglement for n-qubits systems are quantified by using Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) decompositions in which the density matrices are decomposed into various terms representing certain one qubit, two-qubits,and larger qubits measurements. The present method is more general than previous methods for bipartite systems as it can be used for quantification of entanglement for large n-qubits systems. We demonstrate the use of such method by analyzing three qubits GHZ states, and three qubits general Bell states produced by a certain multiplications of Braid operators, operating on the com…
In this work, we present an investigation on the spatial entanglement entropies in the helium atom by using highly correlated Hylleraas functions to represent the S-wave states. Singlet-spin 1sns 1Se states (with n = 1 to 6) and triplet-spin 1sns 3Se states (with n = 2 to 6) are investigated. As a measure on the spatial entanglement, von Neumann entropy and linear entropy are calculated. Furthermore, we apply the Schmidt-Slater decomposition method on the two-electron wave functions, and obtain eigenvalues of the one-particle reduced density matrix, from which the linear entropy and von Neuman…
The general class of Gaussian Schmidt-number witness operators for bipartite systems is studied. It is shown that any member of this class is reducible to a convex combination of two types of Gaussian operators using local operations and classical communications. This gives rise to a simple operational method, which is solely based on measurable covariance matrices of quantum states. Our method bridges the gap between theory and experiment of entanglement quantification. In particular, we certify lower bounds of the Schmidt number of squeezed thermal and phase-randomized squeezed vacuum states…
Using Bloch's parametrization for qudits ($d$-level quantum systems), we write the Hilbert-Schmidt distance (HSD) between two generic $n$-qudit states as an Euclidean distance between two vectors of observables mean values in $\mathbb{R}^{Π_{s=1}^{n}d_{s}^{2}-1}$, where $d_{s}$ is the dimension for qudit $s$. Then, applying the generalized Gell Mann's matrices to generate $SU(d_{s})$, we use that result to obtain the Hilbert-Schmidt quantum coherence (HSC) of $n$-qudit systems. As examples, we consider in details one-qubit, one-qutrit, two-qubit, and two copies of one-qubit states. In this las…
We consider the unitary time evolution of continuous quantum mechanical systems confined to a cavity in contact with a finite bath of variable size. Measures for Markovianity for such finite system-bath configurations are developed in terms of Hilbert-Schmidt distances of time evolving wave packets. The relevant time scales are identified, which characterize pseudo-Markovian transient behavior, boundary scattering induced non-Markovian oscillations at intermediate times, and non-Markovian rephasing events at long time scales. It is shown how these time scales can be controlled by tunable param…
Coherence vectors and correlation matrices are important functions frequently used in physics. The numerical calculation of these functions directly from their definitions, which involves Kronecker products and matrix multiplications, may seem to be a reasonable option. Notwithstanding, as we demonstrate in this article, some algebraic manipulations before programming can reduce considerably their computational complexity. Besides, we provide Fortran code to generate generalized Gell Mann matrices and to compute the optimized and unoptimized versions of the associated Bloch's vectors and corre…
Schmidt rank of bipartite pure state serves as a testimony of entanglement. It is a monotone under local operation + classical communications (LOCC) and puts restrictions in LOCC convertibility of quantum states. Identifying the Schmidt rank of an unknown quantum state therefore seek importance from information theoretic perspective. In this work it is shown that a modified version of Hardy's argument, which reveals the contradiction of quantum theory with local realism, turns out to be useful for inspecting the minimal Schmidt rank of the unknown state and hence also the minimal dimension of …
Entanglement distillation is a procedure for extracting from one or more pairs of entangled qubits a smaller number of pairs with a higher degree of entanglement that is essential for many applications in quantum information science. Schmidt projection is a unique distillation method that can be applied to more than two pairs of entangled qubits at the same time with high efficiency. We implement the Schmidt projection protocol by applying single-photon two-qubit quantum logic to a partially hyperentangled four-qubit input state. The basic elements of the procedure are characterized and we con…
We introduce geometric measures of entanglement for indistinguishable particles, which apply to mixed states, multipartite systems, and arbitrary dimensions. They are based on generalized (i.e., not necessarily finite) norms on the set of quantum states and lead to the first necessary and sufficient computational separability criterion in this general setting. The coherent approach developed in the paper allows us to compare, in particular, entanglement for fermionic and distinguishable particles: The entanglement measure for fermionic particles coincides with the corresponding entanglement me…
We introduce a framework unifying the mathematical characterisation of different measures of general quantum resources and allowing for a systematic way to define a variety of faithful quantifiers for any given convex quantum resource theory. The approach allows us to describe many commonly used measures such as matrix norm-based quantifiers, robustness measures, convex roof-based measures, and witness-based quantifiers together in a common formalism based on the convex geometry of the underlying sets of resource-free states. We establish easily verifiable criteria for a measure to possess des…
We derive an exact formula for the angular Schmidt spectrum of the orbital angular momentum (OAM)-entangled states produced by parametric down-conversion (PDC). We show that our formula yields true theoretical spectrum without any convergence issue as has been the case with the previously derived formulas. Furthermore, we use this formula to experimentally characterize the angular Schmidt spectrum for non-collinear PDC. We report the measurements of very broad angular Schmidt spectra corresponding to angular Schmidt numbers up to 233, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the highest number …
Quantum entanglement is a key resource, which grants quantum systems the ability to accomplish tasks that are classically impossible. Here, we apply Feynman's sum-over-histories formalism to interacting bipartite quantum systems and introduce entanglement measures for bipartite quantum histories. Based on the Schmidt decomposition of the matrix comprised of the Feynman propagator complex coefficients, we prove that bipartite quantum histories are entangled if and only if the Schmidt rank of this matrix is larger than 1. The proposed approach highlights the utility of using a separable basis fo…

Resource theories can be used to formalize the quantification and manipulation of resources in quantum information processing such as entanglement, asymmetry and coherence of quantum states, and incompatibility of quantum measurements. Given a certain state or measurement, one can ask whether there is a task in which it performs better than any resourceless state or measurement. Using conic programming, we prove that any general robustness measure (with respect to a convex set of free states or measurements) can be seen as a quantifier of such outperformance in some discrimination task. We app…
Information-theoretic aspects of quantum inseparability of mixed states are investigated in terms of the $α$-entropy inequalities and teleportation fidelity. Inseparability of mixed states is defined and a complete characterization of the inseparable $2\times2$ systems with maximally disordered subsystems is presented within the Hilbert-Schmidt space formalism. A connection between teleportation and negative conditional $α$-entropy is also emphasized.
The use of multidimensional entanglement opens new perspectives for quantum information processing. However, an important challenge in practice is to certify and characterize multidimensional entanglement from measurement data that are typically limited. Here, we report the certification and quantification of two-photon multidimensional energy-time entanglement between many temporal modes, after one photon has been stored in a crystal. We develop a method for entanglement quantification which makes use of only sparse data obtained with limited resources. This allows us to efficiently certify a…
The coherence of an individual quantum state can be meaningfully discussed only when referring to a preferred basis. This arbitrariness can however be lifted when considering sets of quantum states. Here we introduce the concept of set coherence for characterising the coherence of a set of quantum systems in a basis-independent way. We construct measures for quantifying set coherence of sets of quantum states as well as quantum measurements. These measures feature an operational meaning in terms of discrimination games and capture precisely the advantage offered by a given set over incoherent …
In this essay, I develop order-theoretic notions of determinism and contextuality on domains and topoi. In the process, I develop a method for quantifying contextuality and show that the order-theoretic sense of contextuality is analogous to the sense embodied in the topos-theoretic statement of the Kochen-Specker theorem. Additionally, I argue that this leads to a relation between the entropy associated with measurements on quantum systems and the second law of thermodynamics. The idea that the second law has its origin in the ordering of quantum states and processes dates to at least 1958 an…
In this letter, we propose a method of dark count correction in quantum state tomography of entangled photon pairs. The framework is based on a linear model of dark counts, which is imposed on the measurement formalism. The method is tested on empirical data derived from an experiment on polarization-entangled photons. We demonstrate that the numerical approach to dark count correction guarantees more reliable state reconstruction compared with standard estimation. Most importantly, however, the conceptually simple theoretical approach proves to be more efficient at entanglement quantification…
We study the macroscopic entanglement properties of a low dimensional quantum spin system by investigating its magnetic properties at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. The tempera- ture and magnetic field dependence of entanglement from the susceptibility and magnetization data comparing the experimental extraction with theoretical estimates are given. Extraction of entan- glement has been made possible through the macroscopic witness operators magnetic susceptibility. The protocol followed in doing so has been outlined in some recent work. Various plots of entan- glement comparing th…
We report formulas for the joint moments of the determinantal products (det{rho})^k (det{rho^PT})^K (k=0, 1, 2,...,N; K = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) of Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) probability distributions over the two-rebit and (K = 0, 1) two-qubit density matrices rho. Here PT denotes the partial transposition operation of quantum-information-theoretic importance. Each formula is the product of the expression for the moments of (det{rho})^k, k=0,1,2,...,N--already known from work of Cappellini, Sommers and Zyczkowski (Phys. Rev. A 74, 062322 (1996))--and an adjustment factor. The factor is a biproper rational …

It is commonly accepted that a deviation of the Wigner quasiprobability distribution of a quantum state from a proper statistical distribution signifies its nonclassicality. Following this ideology, we introduce the global indicator $\mathcal{Q}_N$ for quantification of "classicality-quantumness" correspondence in the form of the functional on the orbit space $\mathcal{O}[\mathfrak{P}_N]$ of the $SU(N)$ group adjoint action on the state space $\mathfrak{P}_N$ of an $N$-dimensional quantum system. The indicator $\mathcal{Q}_{N}$ is defined as a relative volume of a subspace $\mathcal{O}[\mathfr…
