A class of dissipative dynamical systems evolving on smooth constraint hypersurfaces endowed with degenerate induced bilinear forms is studied. The intrinsic evolution is generated by constraint--preserving vector fields on manifolds whose tangent bundles admit a nontrivial null distribution associated with the degeneracy of the induced structure. In this indefinite setting, the absence of coercive Lyapunov functionals prevents the direct application of classical attractor theory developed for Riemannian phase spaces. Dissipation is instead characterized relative to functionals that are compatible with the null distribution and exhibit decay exclusively in directions transverse to the associated foliation. Under suitable involutivity and regularity assumptions on the null distribution, all bounded trajectories are shown to be asymptotically confined to invariant leaves of the corresponding foliation. Asymptotic compactness of the intrinsic evolution is then established without coercivity by reducing the dynamics to a projected semiflow on the quotient manifold determined by the characteristic distribution. In the presence of a bounded absorbing set and continuous semiflow structure, the intrinsic evolution admits a compact global attractor saturated by the null leaves, whose effective asymptotic dynamics are governed by a compact invariant subset of the reduced phase space. Furthermore, when the compatible functional satisfies a Morse--type nondegeneracy condition in directions transverse to the null distribution and the induced transversal linearization admits no center spectrum, the projected semiflow possesses no neutral directions. The resulting framework provides a mechanism by which constraint--induced degeneracy enforces effective dimensional reduction in dissipative geometric evolution systems.
We prove that spiral sinks (stable foci of vector fields) can be transformed into strange attractors exhibiting sustained, observable chaos if subjected to periodic pulsatile forcing. We show that this phenomenon occurs in the context of periodically-kicked degenerate supercritical Hopf bifurcations. The results and their proofs make use of a new multi-parameter version of the theory of rank one maps developed by Wang and Young.
We discuss the existence of the global attractor for a family of processes $U_σ(t,τ)$ acting on a metric space $X$ and depending on a symbol $σ$ belonging to some other metric space $Σ$. Such an attractor is uniform with respect to $σ\inΣ$, as well as with respect to the choice of the initial time $τ\in\R$. The existence of the attractor is established for totally dissipative processes without any continuity assumption. When the process satisfies some additional (but rather mild) continuity-like hypotheses, a characterization of the attractor is given.
In this paper we study continuous parametrized families of dissipative flows, which are those flows having a global attractor. The main motivation for this study comes from the observation that, in general, global attractors are not robust, in the sense that small perturbations of the flow can destroy their globality. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a global attractor to be continued to a global attractor. We also study, using shape theoretical methods and the Conley index, the bifurcation global to non-global.
In this paper we consider sufficient conditions for the existence of uniform compact global attractor for non-autonomous dynamical systems in special classes of infinite-dimensional phase spaces. The obtained generalizations allow us to avoid the restrictive compactness assumptions on the space of shifts of non-autonomous terms in particular evolution problems. The results are applied to several evolution inclusions.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the long-time dynamical behavior of the solution for a degenerate wave equation with time-dependent damping term $\partial_{tt}u + β(t)\partial_tu = \mathcal{L}u(x,t) + f(u)$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Under some restrictions on $β(t)$ and critical growth restrictions on the nonlinear term $f$, we will prove the local and global well-posedness of the solution and derive the existence of a pullback attractor for the process associated with the degenerate damped hyperbolic problem.
We investigate the long term behavior in terms of global attractors, as time goes to infinity, of solutions to a continuum model for biological aggregations in which individuals experience long-range social attraction and short range dispersal. We consider the aggregation equation with both degenerate and non-degenerate diffusion in a bounded domain subject to various boundary conditions. In the degenerate case, we prove the existence of the global attractor and derive some optimal regularity results. Furthermore, in the non-degenerate case we give a complete structural characterization of the…
We prove the existence of random attractors for a large class of degenerate stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) perturbed by joint additive Wiener noise and real, linear multiplicative Brownian noise, assuming only the standard assumptions of the variational approach to SPDE with compact embeddings in the associated Gelfand triple. This allows spatially much rougher noise than in known results. The approach is based on a construction of strictly stationary solutions to related strongly monotone SPDE. Applications include stochastic generalized porous media equations, stochastic ge…
As it is well-known, the forwards and pullback dynamics are in general unrelated. In this paper we present an in-depth study of whether the pullback attractor is also a forwards attractor for the processes involved with the skew-product semiflow induced by a family of scalar non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equations which are linear in a neighbourhood of zero and have null upper Lyapunov exponent. Besides, the notion of Li-Yorke chaotic pullback attractor for a process is introduced, and we prove that this chaotic behaviour might occur for almost all the processes. When the problems are addi…
In this paper a family of non-autonomous scalar parabolic PDEs over a general compact and connected flow is considered. The existence or not of a neighbourhood of zero where the problems are linear has an influence on the methods used and on the dynamics of the induced skew-product semiflow. That is why two cases are distinguished: linear-dissipative and purely dissipative problems. In both cases, the structure of the global and pullback attractors is studied using principal spectral theory. Besides, in the purely dissipative setting, a simple condition is given, involving both the underlying …
In this paper we present the scenario of the occurrence of strongly dissipative mixed dynamics in two-dimensional reversible diffeomorphisms, using as an example the system describing a motion of two point vortices under the influence of wave perturbation and shear flow. For mixed dynamics of this type the chaotic attractor intersects with the chaotic repeller, but their intersection forms a "thin" set. The main stage of this scenario is the appearance of homoclinic structures for a symmetric saddle orbit which arise after crisis of a homoclinic attractor and repeller.
We propose a theoretical framework for an explanation of the numerically discovered phenomenon of the attractor-repeller merger. We identify regimes which are observed in dynamical systems with attractors as defined in a work by Ruelle and show that these attractors can be of three different types. The first two types correspond to th ewell-known types of chaotic behavior - conservative and dissipative, while the attractors of the third type, the reversible cores, provide a new type of chaos, the so-called mixed dynamics, characterized by the inseparability of dissipative and conservative regi…
The purpose of this paper is to give a characterization of the structure of non-autonomous attractors of the problem $u_t= u_{xx} + λu - β(t)u^3$ when the parameter $λ> 0$ varies. Also, we answer a question proposed in [11], concerning the complete description of the structure of the pullback attractor of the problem when $1<λ<4$ and, more generally, for $λ\neq N^2$, $2 \leq N \in \mathbb{N}$. We construct global bounded solutions , "non-autonomous equilibria", connections between the trivial solution these "non-autonomous equilibria" and characterize the $α$-limit and $ω$-limit set of global …
We consider a class of ordinary differential equations describing one-dimensional analytic systems with a quasi-periodic forcing term and in the presence of damping. In the limit of large damping, under some generic non-degeneracy condition on the force, there are quasi-periodic solutions which have the same frequency vector as the forcing term. We prove that such solutions are Borel summable at the origin when the frequency vector is either any one-dimensional number or a two-dimensional vector such that the ratio of its components is an irrational number of constant type. In the first case t…
If the semigroup is slowly non-dissipative, i.e., its solutions can diverge to infinity as time tends to infinity, one still can study its dynamics via the approach by the unbounded attractors - the counterpart of the classical notion of global attractors. We continue the development of this theory started by Chepyzhov and Goritskii [CG92]. We provide the abstract results on the unbouded attractor existence, and we study the properties of these attractors, as well as of unbounded $ω$-limit sets in slowly non-dissipative setting. We also develop the pullback non-autonomous counterpart of the un…
The construction of attractors of a dissipative difference equation is usually based on compactness assumptions. In this paper, we replace them with contractivity assumptions under which the pullback and forward attractors are identical. As a consequence, attractors degenerate to unique bounded entire solutions. As an application, we investigate attractors of integrodifference equations which are popular models in theoretical ecology.

In this paper we provide a dynamical characterization of isolated invariant continua which are global attractors for planar dissipative flows. As a consequence, a sufficient condition for an isolated invariant continuum to be either an attractor or a repeller is derived for general planar flows.
This note is focused on a novel technique in order to establish the boundedness in more regular spaces for global attractors of dissipative dynamical systems, without appealing to uniform-in-time estimates. As an application of the abstract result, the semigroup generated by the strongly damped wave equation $$u_{tt}-Δu_t-Δu+ϕ(u)=f$$ with critical nonlinearity is considered, whose attractor is shown to possess the optimal regularity.
In this paper we obtain a detailed description of the global and cocycle attractors for the skew-product semiflows induced by the mild solutions of a family of scalar linear-dissipative parabolic problems over a minimal and uniquely ergodic flow. We consider the case of null upper Lyapunov exponent for the linear part of the problem. Then, two different types of attractors can appear, depending on whether the linear equations have a bounded or an unbounded associated real cocycle. In the first case (e.g.~in periodic equations), the structure of the attractor is simple, whereas in the second ca…
We consider a family of non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equations with almost periodic, rapidly oscillating principal part and nonlinear interactions. As the frequency of the oscillations tends to infinity, we prove that the solutions of the non-autonomous equations converge to the solutions of the autonomous averaged equation. If the nonlinearity is dissipative, we prove existence of compact attractors and their upper-semicontinuity at infinity.
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of discrete nonlinear Schrödinger-type (DNLS) equations. For a conservative system, we consider the global in time solvability and the question of existence of standing wave solutions. Similarities and differences with the continuous counterpart (NLS-partial differential equation) are pointed out. For a dissipative system we prove existence of a global attractor and its stability under finite dimensional approximations. Similar questions are treated in a weighted phase space. Finally, we propose possible extensions for various types of DNLS equatio…
Using shape theory and the concept of cellularity, we show that if $A$ is the global attractor associated with a dissipative partial differential equation in a real Hilbert space $H$ and the set $A-A$ has finite Assouad dimension $d$, then there is an ordinary differential equation in ${\mathbb R}^{m+1}$, with $m >d$, that has unique solutions and reproduces the dynamics on $A$. Moreover, the dynamical system generated by this new ordinary differential equation has a global attractor $X$ arbitrarily close to $LA$, where $L$ is a homeomorphism from $A$ into ${\mathbb R}^{m+1}$.
The Penrose-Fife system for phase transitions is addressed. Dirichlet boundary conditions for the temperature are assumed. Existence of global and exponential attractors is proved. Differently from preceding contributions, here the energy balance equation is both singular at 0 and degenerate at infinity. For this reason, the dissipativity of the associated dynamical process is not trivial and has to be proved rather carefully.
We prove that for every smooth compact manifold $M$ and any $r \ge 1$, whenever there is an open domain in $\mathrm{Diff}^r(M)$ exhibiting a persistent homoclinic tangency related to a basic set with a sectionally dissipative periodic saddle, topologically generic diffeomorphisms in this domain have Lyapunov unstable Milnor attractors. This implies, in particular, that the instability of Milnor attractors is locally topologically generic in $C^1$ if $\mathrm{dim}\,M \ge 3$ and in $C^2$ if $\mathrm{dim}\,M = 2$. Moreover, it follows from the results of C. Bonatti, L. J. Díaz and E. R. Pujals th…
An abstract framework for studying the asymptotic behavior of a dissipative evolutionary system $\mathcal{E}$ with respect to weak and strong topologies was introduced in [8] primarily to study the long-time behavior of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) for which the existence of a semigroup of solution operators is not known. Each evolutionary system possesses a global attractor in the weak topology, but does not necessarily in the strong topology. In this paper we study the structure of a global attractor for an abstract evolutionary system, focusing on omega-limits and attracting, invari…
This work is focused on the dissipative system describing the dynamics of an extensible thermoelastic beam, where the dissipation is entirely contributed by the second equation ruling the evolution of the temperature. Under natural boundary conditions, we prove the existence of bounded absorbing sets. When both the external body force and the heat source are time-independent, the related semigroup of solutions is shown to possess the global attractor of optimal regularity for all values of the external axial load. The same result holds true when the rotational inertia is taken into considerati…
We discuss various issues related to the finite-dimensionality of the asymptotic dynamics of solutions of parabolic equations. In particular, we study the regularity of the vector field on the global attractor associated with these equations. We show that certain dissipative partial differential equations possess a linear term that is log-Lipschitz continuous on the attractor. We then prove that this property implies that the associated global attractor $\mathcal A$ lies within a small neighbourhood of a smooth manifold, given as a Lipschitz graph over a finite number of Fourier modes. Consequ…
In dissipative dynamical systems phase space volumes contract, on average. Therefore, the invariant measure on the attractor is singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure. As noted by Ruelle, a generic perturbation pushes the state out of the attractor, hence the statistical features of the perturbation and, in particular, of the relaxation, cannot be understood solely in terms of the unperturbed dynamics on the attractor. This remark seems to seriously limit the applicability of the standard fluctuation dissipation procedure in the statistical mechanics of nonequilibrium (dissipative) syst…
There are many tools for studying local dynamics. An important problem is how this information can be used to obtain global information. We present examples for which local stability does not carry on globally. To this purpose we construct, for any natural n>1, planar maps whose symmetry group is Zn having a local attractor that is not a global attractor. The construction starts from an example with symmetry group Z4. We show that although this example has codimension 3 as a Z4-symmetric map-germ, its relevant dynamic properties are shared by two 1-parameter families in its universal unfolding…
In view of the possibility that the 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) might not always have regular solutions, we introduce an abstract framework for studying the asymptotic behavior of multi-valued dissipative evolutionary systems with respect to two topologies--weak and strong. Each such system possesses a global attractor in the weak topology, but not necessarily in the strong. In case the latter exists and is weakly closed, it coincides with the weak global attractor. We give a sufficient condition for the existence of the strong global attractor, which is verified for the 3D NSE when all s…
We provide evidence of the existence of KAM quasi-periodic attractors for a dissipative model in Celestial Mechanics. We compute the attractors extremely close to the breakdown threshold. We consider the spin-orbit problem describing the motion of a triaxial satellite around a central planet under the simplifying assumption that the center of mass of the satellite moves on a Keplerian orbit, the spin-axis is perpendicular to the orbit plane and coincides with the shortest physical axis. We also assume that the satellite is non-rigid; as a consequence, the problem is affected by a dissipative t…
In this article we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions, in sense of global pullback attractors, of the evolution system $$ \begin{cases} u_{tt} +ηΔ^2 u+a(t)Δθ=f(t,u), & t>τ,\ x\inΩ,\\ θ_t-κΔθ-a(t)Δu_t=0, & t>τ,\ x\inΩ, \end{cases} $$ subject to boundary conditions $$ u=Δu=θ=0,\ t>τ,\ x\in\partialΩ, $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N\geqslant 2$, which boundary $\partialΩ$ is assumed to be a $\mathcal{C}^4$-hypersurface, $η>0$ and $κ>0$ are constants, $a$ is an Hölder continuous function, $f$ is a dissipative nonlinearity locally Lipschitz in the second variable.
We consider semigroup actions on the unit interval generated by strictly increasing $C^r$-maps. We assume that one of the generators has a pair of fixed points, one attracting and one repelling, and a heteroclinic orbit that connects the repeller and attractor, and the other generators form a robust blender, which can bring the points from a small neighborhood of the attractor to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the repeller. This is a model setting for partially hyperbolic systems with one central direction. We show that, under additional conditions on the non-linearity and the Schwarzian…
We establish the effective {\em finite dimensionality} of the dynamics corresponding to a flow-plate interaction PDE model arising in aeroelasticity: a nonlinear panel, in the absence of rotational inertia, immersed in an inviscid potential flow. An intrinsic component of the analysis is the study of a plate equation with a {\it delay} term---a fundamentally non-gradient dynamics. First, we construct a compact global attractor and observe that the attractor is smooth, with finite fractal dimension in the state space. Secondly, by fattening the attractor, we obtain an exponential attractor, tho…
