We prove that a complete Riemannian manifold with a positive uniform lower bound on injectivity radius and a positive uniform lower bound on Ricci curvature admits an $L^\infty$-close (bi-Lipschitz) smooth metric with two-sided Ricci curvature bounds and a uniform positive lower bound on injectivity radius. This answers Question 2 in the Morgan--Pansu list of open problems from the conference Modern Trends in Differential Geometry (São Paulo, 2018), proposed by L. Bandara. In the proof, we rely on controlled smoothing with Croke's universal local volume lower bound and the Cheeger--Gromov--Taylor injectivity radius estimate.
In this paper, we study the injectivity radius bound for 3-d Ricci flow. As applications we show the long time existence of the Ricci flow with positive Ricci curvature. We also partially settle a question in page 302 of the book of Chow-Lu-Ni (2006).
In this paper we obtain a simple upper bound for the infimum of the Ricci curvatures of a complete Riemannian manifold with nonzero injectivity radius i(M) depending only on of the i(M). In case of rigidity the Riemannian manifold must be an Euclidean sphere(Euclidean space) conform the injectivity radius be finite(infinite). Furthermore with the additional assumption that the second derivative of the Ricci tensor is null we prove that the same upper bound for the infimum of the Ricci curvatures holds for the supremum of the Ricci curvatures and $M^n$ has, in fact, parallel Ricci tensor.
A lower-bound estimate of injectivity radius for complete Riemannian manifolds is discussed in a pure geometric viewpoint and is applied to study tangent cones at infinity of certain gradient Ricci solitons. We also study the asymptotic volume ratio of gradient Ricci solitons.
We construct a uniform local bound of curvature operator from local bounds of Ricci curvature and injectivity radius among all $n$-dimensional Ricci flows. Thus new compactness theorems for the Ricci flow and Ricci solitons are derived. In particular, we show that every Ricci flow with $|Ric|\leq K$ must satisfy $|Rm|\leq Ct^{-1}$ for all $t\in (0,T]$, where $C$ depends only on the dimension $n$ and $T$ depends on $K$ and the injectivity radius $inj_{g(t)}$. In the second part of this paper, we discuss the behavior of Ricci curvature and its derivative when the injectivity radius is thoroughly…
Consider a sequence of pointed n-dimensional complete Riemannian manifolds {(M_i,g_i(t), O_i)} such that t in [0,T] are solutions to the Ricci flow and g_i(t) have uniformly bounded curvatures and derivatives of curvatures. Richard Hamilton showed that if the initial injectivity radii are uniformly bounded below then there is a subsequence which converges to an n-dimensional solution to the Ricci flow. We prove a generalization of this theorem where the initial metrics may collapse. Without injectivity radius bounds we must allow for convergence in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to a space which i…
We give a new and complete proof of Hamilton's injectivity radius estimate for sequences with bounded and almost nonnegative curvature operators, unbounded diameters, and bump-like origins. Such sequences arise in particular from dilations about a singularity of the Ricci flow on a 3-manifold.
We give a proof of the fact that the upper and the lower sectional curvature bounds of a complete manifold vary at a bounded rate under the Ricci flow.
We show that for certain locally collapsing initial data with Ricci curvature bounded below, one could start the Ricci flow for a definite period of time. This provides a Ricci flow smoothing tool, with which we find topological conditions that detect the collapsing infranil fiber bundles over controlled Riemannian orbifolds among those locally collapsing regions with Ricci curvature bounded below. In the appendix, we also provide a local distance distortion estimate for certain Ricci flows with collapsing initial data.
We survey some recent developments in the study of collapsing Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below, especially the locally bounded Ricci covering geometry and the Ricci flow smoothing techniques. We then prove that if a Calabi-Yau manifold is sufficiently volume collapsed with bounded diameter and sectional curvature, then it admits a Ricci-flat Kähler metrictogether with a compatible pure nilpotent Killing structure: this is related to an open question of Cheeger, Fukaya and Gromov.
We investigate the possibility of desingularizing a positively curved metric cone by an expanding gradient Ricci soliton with positive curvature operator. This amounts to study the deformation of such geometric structures. As a consequence, we prove that the moduli space of conical positively curved gradient Ricci expanders is connected.
In this note we provide several lower bounds for the volume of a geodesic ball within the injectivity radius in a $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold assuming only upper bounds for the Ricci curvature.
We show that a complete Ricci flow of bounded curvature which begins from a manifold with a Ricci lower bound, local entropy bound, and small local scale-invariant integral curvature control will have global point-wise curvature control at positive times. As applications, we obtain under similar assumptions a compactness result and a gap theorem for complete noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci Curvature.
This note is a continuation of the author's paper \cite{Li}. We prove that if the metric $g$ of a 4-manifold has bounded Ricci curvature and the curvature has no local concentration everywhere, then it can be smoothed to a metric with bounded sectional curvature. Here we don't assume the bound for local Sobolev constant of $g$ and hence this smoothing result can be applied to the collapsing case.
In this paper, we show existence and uniqueness of Ricci flow whose initial condition is a compact Alexandrov surface with curvature bounded from below. This requires a weakening of the notion of initial condition which is able to deal with a priori non-Riemannian metric spaces. As a by-product, we obtain that the Ricci flow of a surface depends smoothly on Gromov-Hausdorff perturbations of the initial condition.
Under the assumption of the uniform local Sobolev inequality, it is proved that Riemannian metrics with an absolute Ricci curvature bound and a small Riemannian curvature integral bound can be smoothed to having a sectional curvature bound. This partly extends previous a priori estimates of Ye Li (J. Geom. Anal. 17 (2007) 495-511; Advances in Mathematics 223 (2010) 1924-1957).
We prove a completely new integral criterion for the existence and completeness of the wave operators $W_{\pm}(-Δ_h,-Δ_g, I_{g,h})$ corresponding to the (unique self-adjoint realizations of) the Laplace-Beltrami operators $-Δ_j$, $j=1,2$, that are induced by two quasi-isometric complete Riemannian metrics $g$ and $h$ on an open manifold $M$. In particular, this result provides a criterion for the absolutely continuous spectra of $-Δ_g$ and $-Δ_h$ to coincide. Our proof relies on estimates that are obtained using a probabilistic Bismut type formula for the gradient of a heat semigroup. Unlike a…
Let $(M^3,g_0)$ be a complete noncompact Riemannian 3-manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and with injectivity radius bounded away from zero. Suppose that the scalar curvature $R(x)\to 0$ as $x\to \infty$. Then the Ricci flow with initial data $(M^3,g_0)$ has a long time solution. This extends a recent result of Ma and Zhu. We also have a higher dimensional version, and we reprove a K$\ddot{a}$hler analogy due to Chau, Tam and Yu.
We announce a new proof of the uniform estimate on the curvature of solutions to the Ricci flow on a compact Kähler manifold $M^n$ with positive bisectional curvature. In contrast to the recent work of X. Chen and G. Tian, our proof of the uniform estimate does not rely on the exsitence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on $M^n$, but instead on the first author's Harnack inequality for the Kähler-Ricc flow, and a very recent local injectivity radius estimate of Perelman for the Ricci flow.
We prove that Riemannian metrics with an absolute Ricci curvature bound and a conjugate radius bound can be smoothed to having a sectional curvature bound. Using this we derive a number of results about structures of manifolds with Ricci curvature bounds.
In this paper we establish the existence of extremals for the Log Sobolev functional on complete non-compact manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and strictly positive injectivity radius, under a condition near infinity. When Ricci curvature is also bounded from above we get exponential decay at infinity of the extremals. As a consequence of these analytical results we establish, under the same assumptions, that non-trivial shrinking Ricci solitons support a gradient Ricci soliton structure. On the way, we prove two results of independent interest: the existence of a distance-like…
We study a transformation of metric measure spaces introduced by Gigli and Mantegazza consisting in replacing the original distance with the length distance induced by the transport distance between heat kernel measures. We study the smoothing effect of this procedure in two important examples. Firstly, we show that in the case of some Euclidean cones, a singularity persists at the apex. Secondly, we generalize the construction to a sub-Riemannian manifold, namely the Heisenberg group, and show that it regularizes the space instantaneously to a smooth Riemannian manifold.
We show that a complete Riemannian manifold has finite topological type (i.e., homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold with boundary), provided its Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor has a positive lower bound, and either of the following conditions: (i) the Ricci curvature is bounded from above; (ii) the Ricci curvature is bounded from below and injectivity radius is bounded away from zero. Moreover, a complete shrinking Ricci soliton has finite topological type if its scalar curvature is bounded.
We present a monotonic expression for the Ricci flow, valid in all dimensions and without curvature assumptions. It is interpreted as an entropy for a certain canonical ensemble. Several geometric applications are given. In particular, (1) Ricci flow, considered on the space of riemannian metrics modulo diffeomorphism and scaling, has no nontrivial periodic orbits (that is, other than fixed points); (2) In a region, where singularity is forming in finite time, the injectivity radius is controlled by the curvature; (3) Ricci flow can not quickly turn an almost euclidean region into a very curve…
This paper explores and ties together three themes. The first is to establish regularity of a metric tensor, on a manifold with boundary, on which there are given Ricci curvature bounds, on the manifold and its boundary, and a Lipschitz bound on the mean curvature of the boundary. The second is to establish geometric convergence of a (sub)sequence of manifolds with boundary with such geometrical bounds and also an upper bound on the diameter and a lower bound on injectivity and boundary injectivity radius, making use of the first part. The third theme involves the uniqueness and conditional st…
We present local estimates for solutions to the Ricci flow, without the assumption that the solution has bounded curvature. These estimates lead to a generalisation of one of the pseudolocality results of G.Perelman in dimension two.
A fundamental tool in the analysis of Ricci flow is a compactness result of Hamilton in the spirit of the work of Cheeger, Gromov and others. Roughly speaking it allows one to take a sequence of Ricci flows with uniformly bounded curvature and uniformly controlled injectivity radius, and extract a subsequence that converges to a complete limiting Ricci flow. A widely quoted extension of this result allows the curvature to be bounded uniformly only in a local sense. However, in this note we give a counterexample.
We investigate regularization of riemannian metrics by mollification. Assuming both-sided bounds on the Ricci tensor and a lower injectivity radius bound we obtain a uniform estimate on the change of the sectional curvature. Actually, our result holds for any metric with a uniform bound on the $W^{2,p}$-harmonic radius.

Based on C. Li and Y. Rubinstein's upper bisectional curvature bound estimate for the conic Kähler metric, we can construct a smoothing sequence for the conic metric with uniformly upper bisectional curvature bound. For the conic metric along a simple normal crossing divisor with triple or higher multiple points we may need to choose a new background Kähler metric in the same cohomology class of the original background metric. This setting will be helpful to the study of conical Kähler-Einstein metrics and conical Kähler-Ricci flow.
In this paper we will give a simple proof of a modification of a result on pseudolocality for the Ricci flow by P.Lu without using the pseudolocality theorem 10.1 of Perelman [P1]. We also obtain an extension of a result of Hamilton on the compactness of a sequence of complete pointed Riemannian manifolds $\{(M_k,g_k(t),x_k)\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ evolving under Ricci flow with uniform bounded sectional curvatures on $[0,T]$ and uniform positive lower bound on the injectivity radii at $x_k$ with respect to the metric $g_k(0)$.
We show that assuming lower bounds on the Ricci curvature and the injectivity radius the absolute value of certain characteristic numbers of a Riemannian manifold, including all Pontryagin and Chern numbers, is bounded proportionally to the volume. The proof relies on Chern-Weil theory applied to a connection constructed from Euclidean connections on charts in which the metric tensor is harmonic and has bounded Hölder norm. We generalize this theorem to a Gromov-Hausdorff closed class of rough Riemannian manifolds defined in terms of Hölder regularity. Assuming an additional upper Ricci curvat…
We study the size of the isometry group Isom(M, g) of Riemannian manifolds (M, g) as g varies. For M not admitting a circle action, we show that the order of Isom(M, g) can be universally bounded in terms of the bounds on Ricci curvature, diameter, and injectivity radius of M. This generalizes results known for negative Ricci curvature to all manifolds. More generally we establish a similar universal bound on the index of the deck group pi_1(M) in the isometry group Isom(X, g) of the universal cover X in the absence of suitable actions by connected groups. We apply this to characterize locally…
The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the curvature behavior of four dimensional shrinking gradient Ricci solitons. For such soliton $M$ with bounded scalar curvature $S$, it is shown that the curvature operator $\mathrm{Rm}$ of $M$ satisfies the estimate $|\mathrm{Rm}|\le c\,S$ for some constant $c$. Moreover, the curvature operator $\mathrm{Rm}$ is asymptotically nonnegative at infinity and admits a lower bound $\mathrm{Rm}\geq -c\,\left(\ln r\right)^{-1/4},$ where $r$ is the distance function to a fixed point in $M$. As application, we prove that if the scalar curvature converges…
We establish fundamental results for a parabolic flow of Riemannian metrics introduced by Bahuaud-Helliwell in arXiv:1010:4287v1 which is based on the Fefferman-Graham ambient obstruction tensor. First, we obtain local $L^2$ smoothing estimates for the curvature tensor and use them to prove pointwise smoothing estimates for the curvature tensor. We use the pointwise smoothing estimates to show that the curvature must blow up for a finite time singular solution. We also use the pointwise smoothing estimates to prove a compactness theorem for a sequence of solutions with bounded $C^0$ curvature …
Given a noncompact spin manifold $M$ with a fixed topological spin structure and two complete Riemannian metrics $g$ and $h$ on $M$ with bounded sectional curvatures, we prove a criterion for the existence and completeness of the wave operators $\mathscr{W}_{\pm}(D_h, D_g, I_{g,h})$ and $\mathscr{W}_{\pm}(D_h^2, D^2_g, I_{g,h})$, where $I_{g,h}$ is the canonically given unitary map between the underlying $L^2$-spaces of spinors. This criterion does not involve any injectivity radius assumptions and leads to a criterion for the stability of the absolutely continuous spectrum of a Dirac operator…
Let $(M, g)$ be a complete non-compact Kähler manifold with non-negative and bounded holomorphic bisectional curvature. Extending our techniques developed in \cite{CT3}, we prove that the universal cover $\wt M$ of $M$ is biholomorphic to $\ce^n$ provided either that $(M, g)$ has average quadratic curvature decay, or $M$ supports an eternal solution to the Kähler-Ricci flow with non-negative and uniformly bounded holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also classify certain local limits arising from the Kähler-Ricci flow in the absence of uniform estimates on the injectivity radius.
We consider complete non-compact manifolds with either a sub-quadratic growth of the norm of the Riemann curvature, or a sub-quadratic growth of both the norm of the Ricci curvature and the squared inverse of the injectivity radius. We show the existence on such a manifold of a distance-like function with bounded gradient and mild growth of the Hessian. As a main application, we prove that smooth compactly supported functions are dense in $W^{2,p}$. The result is improved for $p=2$ avoiding both the upper bound on the Ricci tensor, and the injectivity radius assumption. As further applications…
We generalize most of the known Ricci flow invariant non-negative curvature conditions to less restrictive negative bounds that remain sufficiently controlled for a short time. As an illustration of the contents of the paper, we prove that metrics whose curvature operator has eigenvalues greater than $-1$ can be evolved by the Ricci flow for some uniform time such that the eigenvalues of the curvature operator remain greater than $-C$. Here the time of existence and the constant $C$ only depend on the dimension and the degree of non-collapsedness. We obtain similar generalizations for other in…
In this paper we investigate the validity of first and second order $L^{p}$ estimates for the solutions of the Poisson equation depending on the geometry of the underlying manifold. We first present $L^{p}$ estimates of the gradient under the assumption that the Ricci tensor is lower bounded in a local integral sense and construct the first counterexample showing that they are false, in general, without curvature restrictions. Next, we obtain $L^p$ estimates for the second order Riesz transform (or, equivalently, the validity of $L^{p}$ Calderón--Zygmund inequalities) on the whole scale $1<p<+…
