Quaternionic modular forms on $\mathsf{G}_2$ carry a surprisingly rich arithmetic structure. For example, they have a theory of Fourier expansions where the Fourier coefficients are indexed by totally real cubic rings. For quaternionic modular forms on $\mathsf{G}_2$ associated via functoriality with certain modular forms on $\mathrm{PGL}_2$, Gross conjectured in 2000 that their Fourier coefficients encode $L$-values of cubic twists of the modular form (echoing Waldspurger's work on Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight modular forms). We prove Gross's conjecture when the modular forms are dihedral, giving the first examples for which it is known.
We prove two results on arithmetic quantum chaos for dihedral Maass forms, both of which are manifestations of Berry's random wave conjecture: Planck scale mass equidistribution and an asymptotic formula for the fourth moment. For level $1$ forms, these results were previously known for Eisenstein series and conditionally on the generalised Lindelof hypothesis for Hecke-Maass eigenforms. A key aspect of the proofs is bounds for certain mixed moments of $L$-functions that imply hybrid subconvexity.
We prove the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for the symplectic-metaplectic case under some assumptions. This is the last case of the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures. We also prove two of Prasad's conjectures on the local theta correspondence in the almost equal rank case.
We construct a bipartite Euler system in the sense of Howard for Hilbert modular eigenforms of parallel weight two over totally real fields, generalizing works of Bertolini-Darmon, Longo, Nekovar, Pollack-Weston and others. The construction has direct applications to Iwasawa main conjectures. For instance, it implies in many cases one divisibility of the associated dihedral or anticyclotomic main conjecture, at the same time reducing the other divisibility to a certain nonvanishing criterion for the associated p-adic L-functions. It also has applications to cyclotomic main conjectures for Hilb…
Under endoscopic assumptions about $L$-packets of unitary groups, we prove the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for tempered representations of unitary groups over $p$-adic fields. Roughly, this conjecture says that branching laws for $U(n-1)\subset U(n)$ can be computed using epsilon factors.
Xue proved an equational refinement of the unitary Shimura curve case of the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture via the Gross-Zagier formula for quaternionic Shimura curves. On the other hand, Rapoport, Smithling and Zhang posed a variant of the conjecture, using modified PEL type Shimura varieties, which we call RSZ Shimura varieties. We reinterpret the result of Xue in terms of the modified Shimura curves. We then use the reinterpretation to prove a case of the variant of the conjecture. Our result combined with the work of Xue establishes a connection between the variant and the Gross-Z…
We formulate a global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for general spin groups. That is, we formulate a conjecture on a relation between periods of certain automorphic forms on $GSpin_{n+1} \times GSpin_n$ along the diagonal subgroup $GSpin_n$ and some $L$-values. To support the conjecture, we show that the conjecture holds for $n=2$ and $3$ and for certain cases for $n=4$.
We prove the local Gross-Prasad conjecture for generic L-packets of representations of special orthogonal groups. The proof uses the same result for tempered L-packets proved in a preceding paper, and irreducibility results for the induced representations of whose the elements of the L-packets are Langlands quotients.
We establish the Fourier-Jacobi case of the local Gross-Prasad conjecture for unitary groups, by using local theta correspondence to relate the Fourier-Jacobi case with the Bessel case established by Beuzart-Plessis. To achieve this, we prove two conjectures of D. Prasad on the precise description of the local theta correspondence for (almost) equal rank unitary dual pairs in terms of the local Langlands correspondence.
We introduce a new technique for isolating components on the spectral side of the trace formula. By applying it to the Jacquet--Rallis relative trace formula, we complete the proof of the global Gan--Gross--Prasad conjecture and its refinement Ichino--Ikeda conjecture for $\mathrm{U}(n)\times\mathrm{U}(n+1)$ in the stable case.
We state and prove an extension of the global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture and the Ichino-Ikeda conjecture to the case of some Eisenstein series on unitary groups $U_n\times U_{n+1}$. Our theorems are based on a comparison of the Jacquet-Rallis trace formulas. A new point is the expression of some interesting spectral contributions in these formulas in terms of integrals of relative characters. As an application of our mains theorems, we prove the global Gan-Gross-Prasad and the Ichino-Ikeda conjecture for Bessel periods of unitary groups.
The concept of Artin transfer pattern $((\ker(T_{K,N_i}))_i,(\mathrm{Cl}_p(N_i))_i)$ for homogeneous multiplets $(N_1,\ldots,N_m)$ of unramified cyclic prime degree p extensions $N_i/K$ of a base field K with p-class transfer homomorphisms$T_{K,N_i}:\,\mathrm{Cl}_p(K)\to\mathrm{Cl}_p(N_i)$ is generalized for heterogeneous multiplets of ramified extensions. By application to quadratic subfields K of dihedral fields N of degree 2p with an odd prime p, a conjecture of Scholz concerning the index of subfield units, $(U_N:U_0)$, for ramified extensions N/K with conductor f>1 is verified computation…
In this paper, we investigate the twisted GGP conjecture for certain tempered representations using the theta correspondence and establish some special cases, namely when the L-parameter of the unitary group is the sum of conjugate-dual characters of the appropriate sign.
In this paper, we prove, following earlier work of Waldspurger ([Wa1], [Wa4]), a sort of local relative trace formula which is related to the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for unitary groups over a local field $F$ of characteristic zero. As a consequence, we obtain a geometric formula for certain multiplicities $m(π)$ appearing in this conjecture and deduce from it a weak form of the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture (multiplicity one in tempered L-packets). These results were already known over $p$-adic fields and thus are only new when $F=\mathbb{R}$.
Through combining the work of Jean-Loup Waldspurger (\cite{waldspurger10} and \cite{waldspurgertemperedggp}) and Raphaël Beuzart-Plessis (\cite{beuzart2015local}), we give a proof for the tempered part of the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture (\cite{ggporiginal}) for special orthogonal groups over any local fields of characteristic zero, which was already proved by Waldspurger over $p$-adic fields.
We prove the local Gross-Prasad conjecture for tempered representations of special orthogonal groups. Roughly speaking, the conjecture says that, if sigma is an irreducible representation of SO(n) and rho is an irreducible representation of SO(n-1), rho appears as quotient of the restriction of sigma to SO(n-1) with a multiplicity m(sigma, rho) that can be computed in terms of epsilon-factors. Our proof uses results of a previous papers which computes m(sigma, rho) and the epsilon-factors by integral formulas.
We consider irreducible unitary representations $A_i$ of G=SO(n+1,1) with the same infinitesimal character as the trivial representation and representations $B_j$ of H=SO(n,1) with the same properties and discuss H-equivariant homomorphisms Hom_H($A_i,B_j$). For tempered representations our results confirm the predictions of conjectures by B. Gross and D. Prasad.
We prove a local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture on predicting the branching law for the non-tempered representations of general linear groups in the case of non-Archimedean field. We also generalize to Bessel and Fourier-Jacobi models and study a possible generalization to Ext-branching laws.
This note shows how to use the framework of Euler characteristic formulae to study Selmer groups of abelian varieties in certain dihedral or anticyclotomic extensions of CM fields via Iwasawa main conjectures, and in particular how to verify the p-part of the refined Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in this setting. When the Selmer group is cotorsion with respect to the associated Iwasawa algebra, we obtain the p-part of formula predicted by the refined Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. When the Selmer group is not cotorsion with respect to the associated Iwasawa algebra, we give a con…
Let F be a number field, A_F its ring of adeles, and let π_n and π_{n+1} be irreducible, cuspidal, automorphic representations of SO_n(A_F) and SO_{n+1}(A_F), respectively. In 1991, Benedict Gross and Dipendra Prasad conjectured the non-vanishing of a certain period integral attached to π_n and π_{n+1} is equivalent to the non-vanishing of L(1/2, π_n x π_{n+1}). More recently, Atsushi Ichino and Tamotsu Ikeda gave a refinement of this conjecture as well as a proof of the first few cases (n = 2,3). Their conjecture gives an explicit relationship between the aforementioned L-value and period int…
We restrict a Siegel modular cusp form of degree 2 and square free level that is a Yoshida lifting (a lifting from the orthogonal group of a definite quaternion algebra) to the embedded product of two half planes and compute the Petersson product against the product of two elliptic cuspidal Hecke eigenforms. The square of this integral can be explicitly expressed in terms of the central critical value of an L-function attached to the situation. The result is related to a conjecture of Gross and Prasad about restrictions of automorphic representations of special orthogonal groups.
In this paper, we prove the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture and the Ichino-Ikeda conjecture for unitary groups $U_n\times U_{n+1}$ in all the endoscopic cases. Our main technical innovation is the computation of the contributions of certain cuspidal data, called $*$-generic, to the Jacquet-Rallis trace formula for linear groups. We offer two different computations of these contributions: one, based on truncation, is expressed in terms of regularized Rankin-Selberg periods of Eisenstein series and Flicker-Rallis intertwining periods. The other, built upon Zeta integrals, is expressed in terms of fu…
On the Gross-Prasad conjecture with its refinement for $\left(\mathrm{SO}\left(5\right),\mathrm{SO}\left(2\right)\right)$ and the generalized Böcherer conjecture
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields of characteristic 0 and let $G=U(n)$, $H=U(m)$ be unitary groups of hermitian spaces $V$ and $W$. Assume that $V$ contains $W$ and that the orthogonal complement of $W$ is a quasisplit hermitian space (i.e. whose unitary group is quasisplit over $F$). Let $π$ and $σ$ be smooth irreducible representations of $G(F)$ and $H(F)$ respectively. Then Gan, Gross and Prasad have defined a multiplicity $m(π,σ)$ which for $m=n-1$ is just the dimension of $Hom_{H(F)}(π,σ)$. For $π$ and $σ$ tempered, we state and prove an integral formula f…
In this paper, we investigate the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for some pair of representations of $U(3)\times U(2)$ involving a non-generic representation. For a pair of generic $L$-parameters of $(U(n),U(n-1))$, it is known that there is a unique pair of representations in their associateed Vogan $L$-packets which produces the unique Bessel model of these $L$-parameters. We showed that this is not ture for some pair of $L$-parameters involving a non-generic one. On the other hand, we give the precise local theta correspondence for $(U(1),U(3))$ not at the level of $L$-parameters but of …
We give an introduction to generalisations of conjectures of Brumer and Stark on the annihilator of the class group of a number field. We review the relation to the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture, the main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for totally real fields, and a conjecture of Gross on the behaviour of $p$-adic Artin $L$-functions at zero.
In 1980, Gross conjectured a formula for the expected leading term at $s=0$ of the Deligne--Ribet $p$-adic $L$-function associated to a totally even character $ψ$ of a totally real field $F$. The conjecture states that after scaling by $L(ψω^{-1}, 0)$, this value is equal to a $p$-adic regulator of units in the abelian extension of $F$ cut out by $ψω^{-1}$. In this paper, we prove Gross's conjecture.
We prove the Gross order of vanishing conjecture in special cases where the vanishing order of the character in question can be arbitrarily large. In almost all previously known cases the vanishing order is zero or one. One major ingredient of our proofs is the equivalence of this conjecture to the Gross-Kuz'min conjecture. We present here a direct proof of this equivalence, using only the known validity of the Iwasawa Main Conjecture over totally real fields.
We study the action of the derived Hecke algebra in the setting of dihedral weight one forms, and prove a conjecture of the second- and fourth- named authors relating this action to certain Stark units associated to the symmetric square L-function. The proof exploits the theta correspondence between various Hecke modules as well as ideas of Merel and Lecouturier on higher Eisenstein elements.
We use $\ell$-adic class field theory to take a new view on cyclotomic norms and Leopoldt or Gross generalized conjectures. By the way we recall and complete some classical results. We illustrate the logarithmic approach by various numerical examples and counter-examples obtained with PARI.
We introduce the notion of Shintani data, which axiomatizes algebraic aspects of Shintani zeta functions. We develop the general theory of Shintani data, and show that the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture follows from the existence of a Shintani datum. Recently, Dasgupta and Spiess proved the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture under certain conditions. We give an alternative proof of their result by constructing a certain Shintani datum. We also propose a refinement of Gross's leading term conjecture by using the theory of Shintani data. Out conjecture gives a conjectur…
Let $k$ be an imaginary quadratic number field, and $F/k$ a finite abelian extension of Galois group $G$. We show that a Gross conjecture concerning the leading terms of Artin $L$-series holds for $F/k$ and all rational primes which are split in $k$ and which do not divide $6$.
Let p be an odd prime and let L/k be a Galois extension of number fields whose Galois group is isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 2p. Let S be a finite set of primes of L which is stable under the action of Gal(L/k). The Lichtenbaum conjecture on special values of the Dedekind zeta function at negative integers, together with Brauer formalism for Artin's L-functions, gives a (conjectural) formula relating orders of motivic cohomology groups of rings of S-integers and higher regulators of S-units of the subextensions of L/k. In analogy with the classical case of special values at 0, we g…
Gross and Zagier conjectured that if the analytic rank of a rational elliptic curve is 1, then the order of the rational torsion subgroup of the elliptic curve divides the product of Tamagawa number, Manin constant, and the square root of the order of Tate--Shafarevich group over an imaginary quadratic field. In this paper, we show that this conjecture is true.
We prove a conjectural formula relating the Bessel period of certain automorphic forms on $\mathrm{GSp}_4$ to a central $L$-value. This formula is proposed by Liu \cite{liu} as the refined Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for the groups $(\SO(5), \SO(2))$. The conjecture has been previously proved for certain automorphic forms on $\mathrm{GSp_4}$ from lifts. In this paper, we extend the formula to Siegel modular forms of $\Sp_4(\bZ)$.
Let G be a simple complex algebraic group. We prove that the irregularity of the adjoint connection of an irregular flat G-bundle on the formal punctured disk is always greater than or equal to the rank of G. This can be considered as a geometric analogue of a conjecture of Gross and Reeder. We will also show that the irregular connections with minimum adjoint irregularity are precisely the (formal) Frenkel-Gross connections.
We prove a precise formula relating the Bessel period of certain automorphic forms on ${\rm GSp}_{4}(\mathbb{A}_{F})$ to a central $L$-value. This is a special case of the refined Gan--Gross--Prasad conjecture for the groups $({\rm SO}_{5},{\rm SO}_{2})$ as set out by Ichino--Ikeda and Liu. This conjecture is deep and hard to prove in full generality; in this paper we succeed in proving the conjecture for forms lifted, via automorphic induction, from ${\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{A}_{E})$ where $E$ is a quadratic extension of $F$. The case where $E=F\times F$ has been previously dealt with by Liu.
The local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture of unitary groups, which is now settled by the works of Plessis, Gan and Ichino, says that for a pair of generic $L$-parameters of $(U(n+1),U(n))$, there is a unique pair of representations in their associated Vogan $L$-packets which produces the Bessel model. In this paper, we examined the conjecture for a pair of $L$-parameters of $\big(U(n+1), U(n)\big)$ as fixing a special non-generic parameter of $U(n+1)$ and varing tempered $L$-parameters of $U(n)$. We observed that there still exist a Gan-Gross-Prasad type formulae depending on the choice of $L$-par…
This article deals with universal deformations of dihedral representations with a particular focus on the question when the universal deformation is dihedral. Results are obtained in three settings: (1) representation theory, (2) algebraic number theory, (3) modularity. As to (1), we prove that the universal deformation is dihedral if all infinitesimal deformations are dihedral. Concerning (2) in the setting of Galois representations of number fields, we give sufficient conditions to ensure that the universal deformation relatively unramified outside a finite set of primes is dihedral, and dis…
Let $F$ be a totally real number field, $p$ a rational prime, and $χ$ a finite order totally odd abelian character of Gal$(\bar{F}/F)$ such that $χ(\mathfrak{p})=1$ for some $\mathfrak{p}|p$. Motivated by a conjecture of Stark, Gross conjectured a relation between the derivative of the $p$-adic $L$-function associated to $χ$ at its exceptional zero and the $\mathfrak{p}$-adic logarithm of a $p$-unit in the $χ$ component of $F_χ^\times$. In a recent work, Dasgupta, Darmon, and Pollack have proven this conjecture assuming two conditions: that Leopoldt's conjecture holds for $F$ and $p$, and that…
Let $A' = \varprojlim_n$ be the projective limit of the $p$-parts of the ideal class groups of the $p$ integers in the $\Z_p$-cyclotomic extension $\K_{\infty}/\K$ of a CM number field $\K$. We prove in this paper that the $T$ part $(A')^-(T) = 0$. This fact has been explicitly conjecture by Kuz'min in 1972 and was proved by Greenberg in 1973, for abelian extensions $\K/\Q$. Federer and Gross had shown in 1981 that $(A')^-(T) = 0$ is equivalent to the non-vanishing of the $p$-adic regulator of the $p$-units of $\K$.
Let $p\equiv 4,7\mod 9$ be a rational prime number such that $3\mod p$ is not a cubic residue. In this paper we prove the 3-part of the product of the full BSD conjectures for $E_p$ and $E_{3p^3}$ is true using an explicit Gross-Zagier formula, where $E_p: x^3+y^3=p$ and $E_{3p^2}: x^3+y^3=3p^2$ are the elliptic curves related to the Sylvester conjecture and cube sum problems.
We conjecture the existence of special elements in odd degree higher algebraic K-groups of number fields that are related in a precise way to the values at strictly negative integers of the derivatives of Artin L-functions of finite dimensional complex representations. We prove this conjecture in certain important cases and also provide other evidence (both theoretical and numerical) in its support.
