We conjecture the existence of special elements in odd degree higher algebraic K-groups of number fields that are related in a precise way to the values at strictly negative integers of the derivatives of Artin L-functions of finite dimensional complex representations. We prove this conjecture in certain important cases and also provide other evidence (both theoretical and numerical) in its support.
We define Albanese and Picard 1-motives of smooth (simplicial) schemes over a perfect field. For smooth proper schemes, these are the classical Albanese and Picard varieties. For a curve, these are t he homological 1-motive of Lichtenbaum and the motivic $H^1$ of Deligne. This paper proves a conjecture of Deligne about providing an algebraic description, via 1-motives, of the first homology and cohomology groups of a complex algebraic variety. (L. Barbieri-Viale and V. Srinivas have also proved this independently.) It also contains a purely algebraic proof of Lichtenbaum's conjecture that the …
In this paper we study the divisibility and the wild kernels in algebraic K-theory of global fields $F.$ We extend the notion of the wild kernel to all K-groups of global fields and prove that Quillen-Lichtenbaum conjecture for $F$ is equivalent to the equality of wild kernels with corresponding groups of divisible elements in K-groups of $F.$ We show that there exist generalized Moore exact sequences for even K-groups of global fields. Without appealing to the Quillen-Lichtenbaum conjecture we show that the group of divisible elements is isomorphic to the corresponding group of \' etale divis…
Let X be a noetherian scheme of finite Krull dimension, having 2 invertible in its ring of regular functions, an ample family of line bundles, and a global bound on the virtual mod-2 cohomological dimensions of its residue fields. We prove that the comparison map from the hermitian K-theory of X to the homotopy fixed points of K-theory under the natural Z/2-action is a 2-adic equivalence in general, and an integral equivalence when X has no formally real residue field. We also show that the comparison map between the higher Grothendieck-Witt (hermitian K-) theory of X and its étale version is …
Let p be an odd prime and let L/k be a Galois extension of number fields whose Galois group is isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 2p. Let S be a finite set of primes of L which is stable under the action of Gal(L/k). The Lichtenbaum conjecture on special values of the Dedekind zeta function at negative integers, together with Brauer formalism for Artin's L-functions, gives a (conjectural) formula relating orders of motivic cohomology groups of rings of S-integers and higher regulators of S-units of the subextensions of L/k. In analogy with the classical case of special values at 0, we g…
We present a triangulated version of the conjectures of Tate and Beilinson on algebraic cycles over a finite field. This sheds a new light on Lichtenbaum's Weil-etale cohomology.
The Lichtenbaum--Quillen conjecture (LQC) relates special values of zeta functions to algebraic K-theory groups. The Ausoni--Rognes red-shift conjectures generalize the LQC to higher chromatic heights in a precise sense. In this paper, we propose an alternate generalization of the LQC to higher chromatic heights and give evidence for it at height two. In particular, if the $n$-th Greek letter family is detected by a commutative ring spectrum $R$, then we conjecture that the $n+1$-st Greek letter family will be detected by the algebraic K-theory of $R$. We prove this in the case $n=1$ for $R=\t…
We prove that the p-adic height pairing of Nekovar, considered for algebraic curves, gives the p-adic height pairing of Coleman and Gross, defined using Coleman integration.
Gross and Smith have put forward generalizations of Hardy - Littlewood twin prime conjectures for algebraic number fields. We estimate the behavior of sums of a singular series that arises in these conjectures, up to lower order terms. More exactly, we find asymptotic formulas for smoothed sums of the singular series minus one. Based upon Gross and Smith's conjectures, we use our result to suggest that for large enough 'short intervals' in an algebraic number field K, the variance of counts of prime elements in a random short interval deviates from a Cramer model prediction by a universal fact…
We construct indecomposable cycles in the motivic cohomology group $H^3_{\mathcal M}(A,{\mathbb Q}(2))$ where $A$ is an Abelian surface over a number field or the function field of a base. When $A$ is the self product of the universal elliptic curve over a modular curve, these cycles can be used to prove algebraicity results for values of higher Green's functions, similar to a conjecture of Gross, Kohnen and Zagier. We formulate a conjecture which relates our work with the recent work of Bruinier-Ehlen-Yang on the conjecture of Gross-Kohnen-Zagier.
We introduce the notion of Shintani data, which axiomatizes algebraic aspects of Shintani zeta functions. We develop the general theory of Shintani data, and show that the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture follows from the existence of a Shintani datum. Recently, Dasgupta and Spiess proved the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture under certain conditions. We give an alternative proof of their result by constructing a certain Shintani datum. We also propose a refinement of Gross's leading term conjecture by using the theory of Shintani data. Out conjecture gives a conjectur…
Let G be a simple complex algebraic group. We prove that the irregularity of the adjoint connection of an irregular flat G-bundle on the formal punctured disk is always greater than or equal to the rank of G. This can be considered as a geometric analogue of a conjecture of Gross and Reeder. We will also show that the irregular connections with minimum adjoint irregularity are precisely the (formal) Frenkel-Gross connections.
We prove that the existence of an automorphism of finite order on a (defined over a number field) variety X implies the existence of algebraic linear relations between the logarithm of certain periods of X and the logarithm of special values of the Gamma-function. This implies that a slight variation of results by Anderson, Colmez and Gross on the periods of CM abelian varieties is valid for a larger class of CM motives. In particular, we prove a weak form of the period conjecture of Gross-Deligne. Our proof relies on the arithmetic fixed point formula (equivariant arithmetic Riemann-Roch theo…
We prove explicit rationality-results for Asai- $L$-functions, $L^S(s,Π',{\rm As}^\pm)$, and Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions, $L^S(s,Π\timesΠ')$, over arbitrary CM-fields $F$, relating critical values to explicit powers of $(2πi)$. Besides determining the contribution of archimedean zeta-integrals to our formulas as concrete powers of $(2πi)$, it is one of the advantages of our approach, that it applies to very general non-cuspidal isobaric automorphic representations $Π'$ of ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb A_F)$. As an application, this enables us to establish a certain algebraic version of the Gan--Gross--…
In this paper, we prove an averaged version of an algebraicity conjecture in \cite{GKZ87} concerning the values of higher Green's function at CM points. Furthermore, we give the factorization of the ideal generated by such algebraic value in the spirit of the famous work of Gross and Zagier on singular moduli.
We study the algebraic properties of Generalized Laguerre Polynomials for negative integral values of the parameter. For integers $r,n\geq 0$, we conjecture that $L_n^{(-1-n-r)}(x) = \sum_{j=0}^n \binom{n-j+r}{n-j}x^j/j!$ is a $\Q$-irreducible polynomial whose Galois group contains the alternating group on $n$ letters. That this is so for $r=n$ was conjectured in the 50's by Grosswald and proven recently by Filaseta and Trifonov. It follows from recent work of Hajir and Wong that the conjecture is true when $r$ is large with respect to $n\geq 5$. Here we verify it in three situations: i) when …
Gross and Zagier conjectured that the CM values (of certain Hecke translates) of the automorphic Green function $G_s(z_1,z_2)$ for the elliptic modular group at positive integral spectral parameter $s$ are given by logarithms of algebraic numbers in suitable class fields. We prove a partial average version of this conjecture, where we sum in the first variable $z_1$ over all CM points of a fixed discriminant $d_1$ (twisted by a genus character), and allow in the second variable the evaluation at individual CM points of discriminant $d_2$. This result is deduced from more general statements for…
Let R be a complete discrete valuation ring with algebraically closed residue field k and fraction field K. Let X_K be a projective smooth and geometrically connected scheme over K. Néron defined a canonical pairing on X_K between 0-cycles of degree zero and divisors which are algebraically equivalent to zero. When X_K is an abelian variety, and if one restricts to those 0-cycles supported by K-rational points, Néron gave an expression of his pairing involving intersection multiplicities on the Néron model A of A_K over R. When X_K is a curve, Gross and Hriljac gave independantly an analogous …
Higher Green functions are real-valued functions of two variables on the upper half plane which are bi-invariant under the action of a congruence subgroup, have logarithmic singularity along the diagonal, and satisfy the equation $Δf = k(1 - k)f$, where $Δ$ is a hyperbolic Laplace operator and $k$ is a positive integer. Such functions were introduced in the paper of Gross and Zagier "Heegner points and derivatives of $L$-series"(1986). Also it was conjectured in this paper that higher Green's functions have "algebraic" values at CM points. In many particular cases this conjecture was proven by…
Building on our previous work on rigid analytic uniformizations, we introduce Darmon points on Jacobians of Shimura curves attached to quaternion algebras over Q and formulate conjectures about their rationality properties. Moreover, if K is a real quadratic field, E is an elliptic curve over Q without complex multiplication and χis a ring class character such that L(E/K,χ,1) is not 0 we prove a Gross-Zagier type formula relating Darmon points to a suitably defined algebraic part of L(E/K,χ,1); this generalizes results of Bertolini, Darmon and Dasgupta to the case of division quaternion algebr…
