Two-dimensional dilaton gravity provides a valuable framework to study the dynamics of quantum black holes. These models are often coupled to conformal scalar fields, which capture essential quantum effects such as the trace anomaly, while remaining analytically tractable. From the viewpoint of two-dimensional quantum field theory, unitary theories require a positive central charge. However, theories with a total negative central charge naturally arise from the contribution of the Faddeev-Popov ghosts to the effective action. Recent analyses of the Callan-Giddins-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) model with a Russo-Susskin-Thorlacius (RST) counterterm have shown that a negative central charge can remove curvature singularities in the backreacted geometry. In this work, we argue that singularity resolution arises from the negative central charge itself, rather than the particular dynamics of a given model. To support this, we present analogous results in spherically reduced Einstein gravity.
We investigate semiclassical backreaction on a conical naked singularity space-time with a negative cosmological constant in (2+1)-dimensions. In particular, we calculate the renormalized quantum stress-energy tensor for a conformally coupled scalar field on such naked singularity space-time. We then obtain the backreacted metric via the semiclassical Einstein equations. We show that, in the regime where the semiclassical approximation can be trusted, backreaction dresses the naked singularity with an event horizon, thus enforcing cosmic censorship.
Using canonical (Schrodinger) quantization of spherically symetric gravitational dust systems, we find the quasi-classical (coherent) state, |α^{(s)}>, that corresponds to the classical Schwarzschild solution. We calculate the ``quasi-classical Schwarzschild mertic", which is the expectation value of the quantized metric in thhis quasi-classical state. Depending on the quantization scheme that we use, we study three different quasi- classical geometries, all of which turn out to be singularity free. Their maximal extensions are complete manifolds with no singularities, describing a tower of as…
In a previous work, it was shown that all Ricci-flat spacetimes are exact solutions for a large class of non-local gravitational theories. Here we prove that, for a subclass of non-local theories, the Schwarzschild singularity is stable under linear perturbations. Thus, non-locality may be not enough to cure all the singularities of general relativity. Finally, we show that the Schwarzschild solution can be generated by the gravitational collapse of a thin shell of radiation.
A general geometrical scheme is presented for the construction of novel classical gravity theories whose solutions obey two-sided bounds on the sectional curvatures along certain subvarieties of the Grassmannian of two-planes. The motivation to study sectional curvature bounds comes from their equivalence to bounds on the acceleration between nearby geodesics. A universal minimal length scale is a necessary ingredient of the construction, and an application of the kinematical framework to static, spherically symmetric spacetimes shows drastic differences to the Schwarzschild solution of genera…
Revisiting Schwarzschild black hole singularity through string theory

We present the geodesical completion of the Schwarzschild black hole in four dimensions which covers the entire space in (u,v) Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates, including the spacetime behind the black and white hole singularities. The gravitational constant switches sign abruptly at the singularity, thus we interpret the other side of the singularity as a region of antigravity. The presence of such sign flips is a prediction of local (Weyl) scale invariant geodesically complete spacetimes which improve classical general relativity and string theory. We compute the geodesics for our new black hole…
Quantum resolution of the Schwarzschild singularity

In homogeneous cosmologies, quantum geometry effects lead to a resolution of the classical singularity without having to invoke special boundary conditions at the singularity or introduce ad-hoc elements such as unphysical matter. The same effects are shown to lead to a resolution of the Schwarzschild singularity. The resulting quantum extension of space-time is likely to have significant implications to the black hole evaporation process. Similarities and differences with the situation in quantum geometrodynamics are pointed out.
A systematic approach to the coordinate transformations in the Schwarzschild singularity problem is considered. It is shown that both singularities at r=0 and r=2m can be eliminated by suitable coordinate transformations.
In this paper we will study the complete equations of motion for a ghost free quadratic curvature infinite derivative gravity. We will argue that within the scale of non-locality, Schwarzschild-type singular metric solution is not {\it permissible}. Therefore, Schwarzschild-type vacuum solution which is a prediction in Einstein-Hilbert gravity may {\it not} persist within the region of non-locality. We will also show that just quadratic curvature gravity, without infinite derivatives, always allows Schwarzschild-type singular metric solution.
The content of this review is summarized here through the titles of its sections, as follows: 1. Introduction: Schwarzschild's original solution and the ``Schwarzschild solution''. 2. The wrong arrow of time of Hilbert's manifold is at the origin of the Kruskal extension. 3. An invariant, local, intrinsic quantity that diverges at the Schwarzschild surface. 4. The singularity at the Schwarzschild surface is both intrinsic and physical. 5. Conclusion.
We show that the Kantowski--Sachs model of a Schwarzschild black hole interior can be slightly generalized in order to accommodate spatial metrics of different orientations, and in this formulation the equations of motion admit a variable redefinition that makes the system regular at the singularity. This system will then traverse the singularity in a deterministic way (information will be conserved through it), and evolve into a time-reversed and orientation-flipped Schwarzschild white hole interior.
Though loop quantization of several spacetimes has exhibited existence of a bounce via an explicit evolution of states using numerical simulations, the question about the way central singularity is resolved in the black hole interior has remained open. The quantum Hamiltonian constraint in loop quantization turns out to be a finite difference equation whose stability is important to understand to gain insights on the viability of the underlying quantization and resulting physical implications. We take first steps towards addressing these issues for a loop quantization of the Schwarzschild inte…
Born Geometry, Metaparticles, and an Effective Geometric Realization of the Modular Black-Hole Remnant: A Phase-Space Resolution of the Schwarzschild Singularity

Though popular presentations give the Schwarzschild singularity as a point it is known that it is spacelike and not timelike. Thus it has a "length" and is not a "point". In fact, its length must necessarily be infinite. It has been proved that the proper length of the Qadir-Wheeler suture model goes to infinity [1], while its proper volume shrinks to zero, and the asymptotic behaviour of the length and volume have been calculated. That model consists of two Friedmann sections connected by a Schwarzschild "suture". The question arises whether a similar analysis could provide the asymptotic beh…
We reconsider the classical Schwarzschild solution in the context of a Janus cosmological model. We show that the central singularity can be eliminated through a simple coordinate change and that the subsequent transit from one fold to the other is accompanied by mass inversion. In such scenario matter swallowed by black holes could be ejected as invisible negative mass and dispersed in space.
The Schwarzschild singularity's resolution has key values in cracking the key mysteries related with black holes, the origin of their horizon entropy and the information missing puzzle involved in their evaporations. We provide in this work the general dynamic inner metric of collapsing stars with horizons and with non-trivial radial mass distributions. We find that static central singularities are not the final state of the system. Instead, the final state of the system is a periodically zero-cross breathing ball. Through 3+1 decomposed general relativity and its quantum formulation, we estab…
We have previously shown that the singularity in a Schwarzschild black hole of stellar or larger mass may be avoided in a semiclassical manner by using as a source of gravity the stress-energy tensor (SET) corresponding to vacuum polarization of quantum fields, with a minimum spherical radius a few orders of magnitude larger than the Planck length. In this note we estimate the nonlocal contribution to the total SET due to particle creation from vacuum. We show that this contribution is negligibly small as compared to vacuum polarization and does not affect the previously suggested scenario.
A phase-space noncommutativity in the context of a Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model is considered to study the interior of a Schwarzschild black hole. Due to the divergence of the probability of finding the black hole at the singularity from a canonical noncommutativity, one considers a non-canonical noncommutativity. It is shown that this more involved type of noncommutativity removes the problem of the singularity in a Schwarzschild black hole.
We quantize the Schwarzschild spacetime with naked singularity using the affine coherent states quantization method. The novelty of our approach is quantization of both temporal and spatial coordinates. Quantization smears the gravitational singularity indicated by the Kretschmann invariant avoiding its localization in the configuration space. This way we resolve the singularity problem of considered spacetime at quantum level.
We study the negative mass Schwarzschild spacetime, which has a naked singularity, and show that it is perturbatively unstable. This is achieved by first introducing a modification of the well known Regge - Wheeler - Zerilli approach to black hole perturbations to allow for the presence of a ``kinematic'' singularity that arises for negative masses, and then exhibiting exact exponentially growing solutions to the linearized Einstein's equations. The perturbations are smooth everywhere and behave nicely around the singularity and at infinity. In particular, the first order variation of the scal…
We present a review of the two prominent singularity theorems due to Penrose and Hawking, as well as their physical interpretation. Their usage is discussed in detail for the Schwarzschild spacetime with positive and negative mass. First, we present a detailed mathematical proof to formally guarantee the existence of a singularity of geodesic incompleteness for the case of positive mass. Second, we discuss the applicability of the mathematical tools used by the theorems in the negative mass case. The physical implications of the validity or inconsistency of the hypotheses of such theorems on t…
We study the natural extension of spacetime across Schwarzschild's central singularity and the behavior of the geodesics crossing it. Locality implies that this extension is independent from the future fate of black holes. We argue that this extension is the natural $\hbar\!\to\!0$ limit of the effective quantum geometry inside a black hole, and show that the central region contains causal diamonds with area satisfying Bousso's bound for an entropy that can be as large as Hawking's radiation entropy. This result sheds light on the possibility that Hawking radiation is purified by information c…
We study global structures of black hole solutions in Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term coupled to dilaton in various dimensions. In particular we focus on the problem whether the singularity is weakened due to the Gauss-Bonnet term and dilaton. We find that there appears the non-central singularity between horizon and the center in many cases, where the metric does not diverge but the Kretschmann invariant does diverge. Hence this is a singularity, but we find the singularity is much milder than the Schwarzschild solution and the non-dilatonic one. We discuss the origin of this "fat" si…
We study the backwards-in-time stability of the Schwarzschild singularity from a dynamical PDE point of view. More precisely, considering a spacelike hypersurface $Σ_0$ in the interior of the black hole region, tangent to the singular hypersurface $\{r=0\}$ at a single sphere, we study the problem of perturbing the Schwarzschild data on $Σ_0$ and solving the Einstein vacuum equations backwards in time. We obtain a local well-posedness result for small perturbations lying in certain weighted Sobolev spaces. No symmetry assumptions are imposed. The perturbed spacetimes all have a singularity at …
In this paper, we derive the solutions of orbit equations for a class of naked singularity spacetimes, and compare these with timelike orbits, that is, particle trajectories in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. The Schwarzschild and naked singularity spacetimes considered here can be formed as end state of a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a matter cloud. We find and compare the perihelion precession of the particle orbits in the naked singularity spacetime with that of the Schwarzschild black hole. We then discuss different distinguishable physical properties of timelike…
It is shown that the Schwarzschild spacetime can be extended so that the metric becomes analytic at the singularity. The singularity continues to exist, but it is made degenerate and smooth, and the infinities are removed by an appropriate choice of coordinates. A family of analytic extensions is found, and one of these extensions is semi-regular. A degenerate singularity doesn't destroy the topology, and when is semi-regular, it allows the field equations to be rewritten in a form which avoids the infinities, as it was shown elsewhere (arXiv:1105.0201, arXiv:1105.3404). In the new coordinates…
We discuss the opportunity that the singularity inside a Schwarzschild black hole could be replaced by a regular bounce, described as a regular minimum of the spherical radius (instead of zero) and a regular maximum of the longitudinal scale (instead of infinity) in the corresponding Kantowski-Sachs metric. Such a metric in a vicinity of the bounce is shown to be a solution to the Einstein equations with the stress-energy tensor representing vacuum polarization of quantum matter fields, described by a combination of curvature-quadratic terms in the effective action. The indefinite parameters o…
We study the singularity created in the supercritical collapse of a spherical massless scalar field. We first model the geometry and the scalar field to be homogeneous, and find a generic solution (in terms of a formal series expansion) describing a spacelike singularity which is monotonic, scalar polynomial and strong. We confront the predictions of this analytical model with the pointwise behavior of fully-nonlinear and inhomogeneous numerical simulations, and find full compliance. We also study the phenomenology of the spatial structure of the singularity numerically. At asymptotically late…
We present a time-dependent uniform-density interior Schwarzschild solution, an exact solution to the Einstein field equations. Our solution describes the collapse (or the time-reversed expansion) of an object from an infinite radius to an intermediate radius of 9/8 of the Schwarzschild radius, at which time a curvature singularity appears at the origin, and then continues beyond the singularity to a gravastar with radius equal to the Schwarzschild radius.
We use the phenomenological approach to study properties of space-time in the vicinity of the Schwarzschild black-hole singularity. Requiring finiteness of the Schwarzschild-like metrics we come to the notion of integrable singularity that is, in a sense, weaker than the conventional singularity and allows the (effective) matter to pass to the white-hole region. This leads to a possibility of generating a new universe there. Thanks to the gravitational field of the singularity, this universe is already born highly inflated ('singularity-induced inflation') before the ordinary inflation starts.
Naked singularities form during the gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous matter clouds. The final nature of the singularity depends on the initial conditions of the matter properties and types of matter profiles. These naked singularities can also be divided into two types: null-like and timelike singularities. The spacelike singularity of the Schwarzschild black hole can be distinguished from the null and timelike naked singularity spacetimes. In light of this, we investigate the precession of timelike bound orbits in the null naked singularity spacetime, as well as tidal force effects and…
We show a stability result for the Schwarzschild singularity (inside the black hole region) for the Einstein vacuum equations. The result is proven in the class of polarized axial symmetry, under perturbations of the Schwarzschild data induced on a hypersurface $\{r=\e\}$, $\e<<2M$. Our result is only partly a stability result, in that we show that while a (space-like) singularity persists under perturbations as above, the behaviour of the metric approaching the singularity is much more involved than for the Schwarzschild solution. Indeed, we find that the solution displays asymptocially-veloc…
In this paper we study how the distortion generated by a static and neutral distribution of external matter affects a 5-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole. A solution representing a particular class of such distorted black holes admits an RxU(1)xU(1) isometry group. We show that there exists a certain duality transformation between the black hole horizon and a stretched singularity surfaces. The space-time near the distorted black hole singularity has the same topology and Kasner exponents as those of a 5-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole. We calculate the maximal …
The singularity theorem by Hawking and Penrose qualifies Schwarzschild black-holes as geodesic incomplete space-times. Albeit this is a mathematically rigorous statement, it requires an operational framework that allows to probe the space-like singularity via a measurement process. Any such framework necessarily has to be based on quantum theory. As a consequence, the notion of classical completeness needs to be adapted to situations where the only adequate description is in terms of quantum fields in dynamical space-times. It is shown that Schwarzschild black-holes turn out to be complete whe…
The Schwarzschild singularity is known to be classically unstable. We demonstrate a simple holographic consequence of this fact, focusing on a perturbation that is uniform in boundary space and time. Deformation of the thermal state of the dual CFT by a relevant operator triggers a nonzero temperature holographic renormalization group flow in the bulk. This flow continues smoothly through the horizon and, at late interior time, deforms the Schwarzschild singularity into a more general Kasner universe. We show that the deformed near-singularity, trans-horizon Kasner exponents determine specific…
We derive here the orbit equations of particles in naked singularity spacetimes, namely the Bertrand (BST) and Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) geometries, and for the Schwarzschild black hole. We plot the orbit equations and find the Perihelion precession of the orbits of particles in the BST and JNW spacetimes and compare these with the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. We find and discuss different distinguishing properties in the effective potentials and orbits of particle in BST, JNW and Schwarzschild spacetimes, and the particle trajectories are shown for the matching of BST with an externa…
The coupled equations for the scalar modes of the linearized Einstein equations around Schwarzschild's spacetime were reduced by Zerilli to a 1+1 wave equation with a potential $V$, on a field $Ψ_z$. For smooth metric perturbations $Ψ_z$ is singular at $r_s=-6M/(\ell-1)(\ell+2)$, $\ell$ the mode harmonic number, and $V$ has a second order pole at $r_s$. This is irrelevant to the black hole exterior stability problem, where $r>2M>0$, and $r_s <0$, but it introduces a non trivial problem in the naked singular case where $M<0$, then $r_s>0$, and the singularity appears in the relevant range of $r…
Certain time-like singularities are shown to be resolved already in classical General Relativity once one passes from particle probes to scalar waves. The time evolution can be defined uniquely and some general conditions for that are formulated. The Reissner-Nordstrom singularity allows for communication through the singularity and can be termed "beam splitter" since the transmission probability of a suitably prepared high energy wave packet is 25%. The high frequency dependence of the cross section is w^{-4/3}. However, smooth geometries arbitrarily close to the singular one require a finite…
We consider an observer who moves under the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole and absorbs a photon. There are two different situations when (i) a photon comes from infinity, (ii) it is emitted by another observer under the horizon (say, by a surface of a collapsing star). We analyze the frequency change for absorption near the event horizon, in an intermediate region and near the singularity and compare the results for both scenarios. Near the singularity, in both scenarios infinite redshift (in the pure radial case) or infinite blueshift are possible, depending on angular momenta of a p…

The cosmological constant induced by quantum fluctuation of the graviton on a given background is considered as a tool for building a spectrum of different geometries. In particular, we apply the method to the Schwarzschild background with positive and negative mass parameter. In this way, we put on the same level of comparison the related naked singularity (-M) and the positive mass wormhole. We discuss how to extract information in the context of a f(R) theory. We use the Wheeler-De Witt equation as a basic equation to perform such an analysis regarded as a Sturm-Liouville problem . The appl…
Schwarzschild coordinates (r,t) fail to describe the region within the event horizon (EH), (r <= 2 M), of a Black Hole (BH) because the metric coefficients exhibit singularity at r=2 M, and the radial geodesic of a particle appears to be null (ds^2 =0) when actually it must be timelike (ds^2 >0), if, indeed, r_g =2 M >0. Thus, both the exterior and the interior regions of BHs are described by singularity free Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates. However, we show that, in this case too, ds^2= 0 for r=2M. And this result can be physically reconciled only if the EH coincides with the central singularity…
Motivated by the quest for black holes in AdS braneworlds, and in particular by the holographic conjecture relating 5D classical bulk solutions with 4D quantum corrected ones, we numerically solve the semiclassical Einstein equations (backreaction equations) with matter fields in the (zero temperature) Boulware vacuum state. In the absence of an exact analytical expression for <T_(mu nu)> in four dimensions we work within the s-wave approximation. Our results show that the quantum corrected solution is very similar to Schwarzschild till very close to the horizon, but then a bouncing surface fo…
We discuss the properties of the previously constructed model of a Schwarzschild black hole interior where the singularity is replaced by a regular bounce, ultimately leading to a white hole. The model is semiclassical in nature and uses as a source of gravity the effective stress-energy tensor (SET) corresponding to vacuum polarization of quantum fields, and a minimum spherical radius is a few orders of magnitude larger than the Planck length, so that the effects of quantum gravity should be still negligible. We estimate the other quantum contributions to the effective SET, caused by a nontri…
The Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation for the Kantowski-Sachs model can also be understood as the WDW-equation corresponding to the Schwarzschild black hole due to the well known diffeomorphism between these two metrics. The WDW-equation and its solutions are ``ignorant'' of the coordinate patch one is using, only by imposing coordinate conditions we can differentiate between cosmological and black hole models. At that point, the foliation parameter $t$ or $r$ will appear in the solution of interest. In this work we supersymmetrize this WDW-equation obtaining an extra term in the potential with tw…
We calculate the quantum correlator in Schwarzschild black hole space-time. We perform the calculation for a scalar field in three different quantum states: Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking, and for points along a timelike circular geodesic. The results show that the correlator presents a global fourfold singularity structure, which is state-independent. Our results also show the different correlations in the three different quantum states arising in-between the singularities.
We discuss quantum black holes in asymptotically safe quantum gravity with a scale identification based on the Kretschmann scalar. After comparing this scenario with other scale identifications, we investigate in detail the Kerr-(A)dS and Schwarzschild-(A)dS space-times. The global structure of these geometries is studied as well as the central curvature singularity and test particle trajectories. The existence of a Planck-sized, extremal, zero temperature black hole remnant guarantees a stable endpoint of the evaporation process via Hawking radiation.

We apply the conical singularity method to the two dimensional version of the Schwarzschild metric to obtain the Kruskal coordinates of the black hole in a very simple and direct way. Then we make use of this metric in an approximated version and calculate the expected value of energy-momentum tensor of a massless quantum field near the horizon, resulting in regular expressions for its components.
We consider the deformation of the Schwarzschild solution in general relativity due to spherically symmetric quantum fluctuations of the metric and the matter fields. In this case, the 4D theory of gravity with Einstein action reduces to the effective two-dimensional dilaton gravity. We have found that the Schwarzschild singularity at $r=0$ is shifted to the finite radius $r_{min} \sim r_{Pl}$, where the scalar curvature is finite, so that the space-time looks regular and consists of two asymptotically flat sheets glued at the hypersurface of constant radius.
Slice-stretching effects are discussed as they arise at the event horizon when geodesically slicing the extended Schwarzschild black-hole spacetime while using singularity excision. In particular, for Novikov and isotropic spatial coordinates the outward movement of the event horizon (``slice sucking'') and the unbounded growth there of the radial metric component (``slice wrapping'') are analyzed. For the overall slice stretching, very similar late time behavior is found when comparing with maximal slicing. Thus, the intuitive argument that attributes slice stretching to singularity avoidance…
