We apply the conical singularity method to the two dimensional version of the Schwarzschild metric to obtain the Kruskal coordinates of the black hole in a very simple and direct way. Then we make use of this metric in an approximated version and calculate the expected value of energy-momentum tensor of a massless quantum field near the horizon, resulting in regular expressions for its components.
Boundary conditions and the corresponding states of a quantum field theory depend on how the horizons are taken into account. There is ambiguity as to which method is appropriate because different ways of incorporating the horizons lead to different results. We propose that a natural way of including the horizons is to first consider the Kruskal extension and then define the quantum field theory on the Euclidean section. Boundary conditions emerge naturally as consistency conditions of the Kruskal extension. We carry out the proposal for the explicit case of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter manifol…
The temperature of an extremal Reissner - Nordstrom black hole is not restricted by the requirement of absence of a conical singularity. It is demonstrated how Kruskal-like coordinates may be constructed corresponding to any temperature whatsoever. A recently discovered stringy extremal black hole which apparently has an infinite temperature is also shown to have its temperature unrestricted by conical singularity arguments.
It has been observed that the area product of horizons for many black hole solutions is mass independent and satisfy the universality relation $A_+A_-=(8π)^2 N$, where $N$ is related to the quantized charges of the solution as angular momentum and electric charge. In this work the same analysis is done for black hole and black ring solutions with conical singularity. We find that the area product is still mass independent and regardless of the horizon topology, the conical characteristic ($κ$) of the solutions, appears in the universality relation as $κA_+A_-=(8π)^2 N$. We also check that the …
Schwarzschild coordinates (r,t) fail to describe the region within the event horizon (EH), (r <= 2 M), of a Black Hole (BH) because the metric coefficients exhibit singularity at r=2 M, and the radial geodesic of a particle appears to be null (ds^2 =0) when actually it must be timelike (ds^2 >0), if, indeed, r_g =2 M >0. Thus, both the exterior and the interior regions of BHs are described by singularity free Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates. However, we show that, in this case too, ds^2= 0 for r=2M. And this result can be physically reconciled only if the EH coincides with the central singularity…

In the context of Born-Infeld \emph{determinantal} gravity formulated in a n-dimensional spacetime with absolute parallelism, we found an exact 3-dimensional \emph{vacuum} circular symmetric solution without cosmological constant consisting in a rotating spacetime with non singular behavior. The space behaves at infinity as the conical geometry typical of 3-dimensional General Relativity without cosmological constant. However, the solution has no conical singularity because the space ends at a minimal circle that no freely falling particle can ever reach in a finite proper time. The space is c…
We find black hole solutions to Euclidean 2+1 gravity coupled to a relativistic particle which have a dynamical conical singularity at the horizon. These solutions mimic the tree level contribution to the partition function of gravity coupled to a quantum field theory. They are found to violate the standard area law for black hole entropy, their entropy being proportional to the total opening angle. Since each solution depends on the number of windings of the particle path around the horizon, the significance of their summation in the path integral is considered.
Kruskal's extension solves the problem of the arrow of time of the ``Schwarzschild solution'' through combining two Hilbert manifolds by a singular coordinate transformation. We discuss the implications for the singularity problem and the definition of the mass point. The analogy set by Rindler between the Kruskal metric and the Minkowski spacetime is investigated anew. The question is answered, whether this analogy is limited to a similarity of the chosen "Bildräume'', or can be given a deeper, intrinsic meaning. The conclusion is reached by observing a usually neglected difference: the left …
We consider black holes in an "unsuitable box": a finite cavity coupled to a thermal reservoir at a temperature different than the black hole's Hawking temperature. These black holes are described by metrics that are continuous but not differentiable due to a conical singularity at the horizon. We include them in the Euclidean path integral sum over configurations, and analyze the effect this has on black hole thermodynamics in the canonical ensemble. Black holes with a small deficit (or surplus) angle may have a smaller internal energy or larger density of states than the nearby smooth black …
The replica trick defines Renyi entropies as partition functions on conically singular geometries. We discuss their gravity duals: regular bulk solutions to the Einstein equations inducing conically singular metrics at the boundary. When the conical singularity is supported on a flat or spherical surface, these solutions are rewritings of the hyperbolic black hole. For more general shapes, these solutions are new. We construct them perturbatively in a double expansion in the distance and strength of the conical singularity, and extract the vacuum polarisation due to the cone. Recent results ab…
We study the geometry generated by a massless cosmic string. We find that this is given by a Riemann flat spacetime with a conical singularity along the worldsheet of the string. The geometry of such a spacetime is completely fixed by the holonomy of a simple loop wrapping the conical singularity. In the case of a massless cosmic string, this holonomy is a null-rotation/parabolic Lorentz transformation with a parabolic angle given by the linear energy density of the cosmic string. This description explicitly shows that there is no gravitational shockwave accompanying the massless cosmic string…
The generic null geodesic of the Schwarzschild--Kruskal--Szekeres geometry has a natural complexification, an elliptic curve with a cusp at the singularity. To realize that complexification as a Riemann surface without a cusp, and also to ensure conservation of energy at the singularity, requires a branched cover of the space-time over the singularity, with the geodesic being doubled as well to obtain a genus two hyperelliptic curve with an extra involution. Furthermore, the resulting space-time obtained from this branch cover has a Hamiltonian that is null geodesically complete. The full comp…
Topological solutions in the (2+1)-dimensional Einstein theory of gravity are studied within the ADM canonical formalism. It is found that a conical singularity appears in the closed de Sitter universe solution as a topological defect in the case of the Einstein theory with a cosmological constant. Quantum effects on the conical singularity are studied using the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation. Finite quantum tunneling effects are obtained for the closed de Sitter universe, while no quantum effects are obtained for an open universe.
We argue that, when working with the appropriate set of thermodynamical variables, the Bekenstein-Hawking law still holds for asymptotically flat black objects with conical singularities. The mass-energy which enters the first law of thermodynamics does not, however, coincide with the ADM mass; it differs from the latter by the energy associated with the conical singularity, as seen by an asymptotic, static observer. These statements are supported by a number of examples: the Bach-Weyl (double-Schwarzschild) solution, its dihole generalisation in Einstein-Maxwell theory and the five dimensiona…
We reconsider space-time singularities in classical Einsteinian general relativity: with the help of several new co-ordinate systems we show that the Schwarzschild solution can be extended beyond the curvature singularity at r=0. The extension appears as an infinite covering of standard Kruskal space-time. While the two-dimensional reduction of this infinite sequence of Kruskal-Szekeres domains obtained by suppressing the angular degrees of freedom is still a topological manifold - albeit one for which the metric structure is singular on one-dimensional submanifolds - we obtain for the full fo…
In a class of Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi (GLPV) theories, we derive both vacuum and interior Schwarzschild solutions under the condition that the derivatives of a scalar field $ϕ$ with respect to the radius $r$ vanish. If the parameter $α_{\rm H}$ characterizing the deviation from Horndeski theories approaches a non-zero constant at the center of a spherically symmetric body, we find that the conical singularity arises at $r=0$ with the Ricci scalar given by $R=-2α_{\rm H}/r^2$. This originates from violation of the geometrical structure of four-dimensional curvature quantities. The coni…
The black hole of the widely used ordinary 2d--dilaton model (DBH) deviates from the Schwarzschild black hole (SBH) of General Relativity in one important feature: Whereas non-null extremals or geodesics show the expected incompleteness this turns out {\it not to be the case for the null extremals}. After a simple analysis in Kruskal coordinates for singularities with power behavior of this -- apparently till now overlooked -- property we discuss the global structure of a large family of generalized dilaton theories which does not only contain the DBH and SBH but also other proposed dilaton th…
We apply the method of conical singularities to calculate the tree-level entropy and its one-loop quantum corrections for a charged Kerr black hole. The Euclidean geometry for the Kerr-Newman metric is considered. We show that for an arbitrary periodization in Euclidean space there exists a conical singularity at the horizon. Its $δ$-function like curvatures are calculated and are shown to behave similar to the static case. The heat kernel expansion for a scalar field on this conical space background is derived and the (divergent) quantum correction to the entropy is obtained. It is argued tha…
It is shown that the space-time with a conical singularity, which describes a thin cosmic string, is hyperbolic in the sense that a unique H^1 solution exists to the initial value problem for the wave equation with a certain class of initial data.
We develop an approach to calculate the self-force on a charged particle held in place in a curved spacetime, in which the particle is attached to a massless string and the force is measured by the string's tension. The calculation is based on the Weyl class of static and axially symmetric spacetimes, and the presence of the string is manifested by a conical singularity; the tension is proportional to the angular deficit. A remarkable and appealing aspect of this approach is that the calculation of the self-force requires no renormalization of the particle's field. This is in contract with tra…
We consider the problem of calculating the Gaussian curvature of a conical 2-dimensional space by using concepts and techniques of distribution theory. We apply the results obtained to calculate the Riemannian curvature of the 4-dimensional conical space-time. We show that the method can be extended for calculating the curvature of a special class of more general space-times with conical singularity.
The content of this review is summarized here through the titles of its sections, as follows: 1. Introduction: Schwarzschild's original solution and the ``Schwarzschild solution''. 2. The wrong arrow of time of Hilbert's manifold is at the origin of the Kruskal extension. 3. An invariant, local, intrinsic quantity that diverges at the Schwarzschild surface. 4. The singularity at the Schwarzschild surface is both intrinsic and physical. 5. Conclusion.
We present the geodesical completion of the Schwarzschild black hole in four dimensions which covers the entire space in (u,v) Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates, including the spacetime behind the black and white hole singularities. The gravitational constant switches sign abruptly at the singularity, thus we interpret the other side of the singularity as a region of antigravity. The presence of such sign flips is a prediction of local (Weyl) scale invariant geodesically complete spacetimes which improve classical general relativity and string theory. We compute the geodesics for our new black hole…
The Unruh effect has been investigated from the point of view of the quantum statistical Zubarev density operator in space with the Minkowski metric. Quantum corrections of the fourth order in acceleration to the energy-momentum tensor of real and complex scalar fields, and Dirac field are calculated. Both massless and massive fields are considered. The method for regularization of discovered infrared divergences for scalar fields is proposed. The calculated corrections make it possible to substantiate the Unruh effect from the point of view of the statistical approach, and to explicitly show …
We investigate semiclassical backreaction on a conical naked singularity space-time with a negative cosmological constant in (2+1)-dimensions. In particular, we calculate the renormalized quantum stress-energy tensor for a conformally coupled scalar field on such naked singularity space-time. We then obtain the backreacted metric via the semiclassical Einstein equations. We show that, in the regime where the semiclassical approximation can be trusted, backreaction dresses the naked singularity with an event horizon, thus enforcing cosmic censorship.
In this paper, we explore the interior dynamics of neutral and charged black holes. Scalar collapses in flat, Schwarzschild, and Reissner-Nordstrom geometries are simulated. We examine the dynamics in the vicinities of the central singularity of a Schwarzschild black hole and of the inner horizon of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. In simulating scalar collapses in Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom geometries, Kruskal and Kruskal-like coordinates are used, respectively, with the presence of a scalar field being taken into account. It is found that, besides near the inner horizons of Reissne…
We consider static spherically symmetric solutions of Einstein's equations coupled to an SU(2) Yang Mills field that are smooth at the center of spherical symmetry. We prove that with small cosmological constant there exist solutions that possess a coordinate singularity at some r that is not maximum. The singularity can be removed with a Kruskal-like change of coordinates.
Using techniques of supersymmetric gauge theories, we present the Ricci-flat metrics on non-compact Kahler manifolds whose conical singularity is repaired by the Hermitian symmetric space. These manifolds can be identified as the complex line bundles over the Hermitian symmetric spaces. Each of the metrics contains a resolution parameter which controls the size of these base manifolds, and the conical singularity appears when the parameter vanishes.
We consider the behaviour of a quantum scalar field on three-dimensional Euclidean backgrounds: Anti-de Sitter space, the regular BTZ black hole instanton and the BTZ instanton with a conical singularity at the horizon. The corresponding heat kernel and effective action are calculated explicitly for both rotating and non-rotating holes. The quantum entropy of the BTZ black hole is calculated by differentiating the effective action with respect to the angular deficit at the conical singularity. The renormalization of the UV-divergent terms in the action and entropy is considered. The structure …

In this paper, we explore the interior dynamics of neutral and charged black holes in $f(R)$ gravity. We transform $f(R)$ gravity from the Jordan frame into the Einstein frame and simulate scalar collapses in flat, Schwarzschild, and Reissner-Nordström geometries. In simulating scalar collapses in Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström geometries, Kruskal and Kruskal-like coordinates are used, respectively, with the presence of $f'$ and a physical scalar field being taken into account. The dynamics in the vicinities of the central singularity of a Schwarzschild black hole and of the inner horizo…
A previously introduced method to renormalize the one-loop stress tensor and the one-loop vacuum fluctuations in a curved background by a direct local $ζ$-function approach is checked in some thermal and nonthermal cases. First the method is checked in the case of a conformally coupled massless field in the static Einstein universe where all hypotheses initially requested by the method hold true. Secondly, dropping the hypothesis of a closed manifold, the method is checked in the open static Einstein universe. Finally, the method is checked for a massless scalar field in the presence of a coni…
A conical defect in (2+1) anti-de Sitter space is a BTZ solution with a negative mass parameter. This is a naked singularity, but a rather harmless one: it is a point particle. Naturally, the energy density and the spacetime curvature have a delta-like singularity at the apex of the conical defect, but that doesn't give rise to any unphysical situations. Since the conical solution implies the presence of a source, applying reverse enginnering, one can identify the coupling term that is required in the action to account for that source. In that way, a relation is established between the identif…
We analyze a four-parameter class of asymptotically flat magnetized solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations constructed by Manko et al., and show that these represent systems of two co-rotating extreme black holes with equal masses and electric charges, and opposite magnetic and NUT charges, connected by a cosmic string. We discuss several three-parameter subclasses, and determine in each case the parameter domain in which the ring singularity is absent. We find a two-parameter subclass and a one-parameter subclass where the conical singularity is also absent in the horizon co-rotating fra…
In three dimensions, a phase transition occurs between the non-rotating BTZ black hole and the massless BTZ black hole. Further, introducing the mass of a conical singularity, we show that a transition between the non-rotating BTZ black hole and thermal AdS space is also possible.
We review the insights into black hole entropy that arise from the formulation of gravitation theory in terms of dimensional continuation. The role of the horizon area and the deficit angle of a conical singularity at the horizon as canonically conjugate dynamical variables is analyzed. The path integral and the extension of the Wheeler-De Witt equation for black holes are discussed.
It has recently been shown that a stationary, asymptotically flat vacuum black hole in five space-time dimensions with two commuting axial symmetries must have an event horizon with either a spherical, ring or lens-space topology. In this paper, we study the third possibility, a so-called black lens with L(n,1) horizon topology. Using the inverse scattering method, we construct a black lens solution with the simplest possible rod structure, and possessing a single asymptotic angular momentum. Its properties are then analysed; in particular, it is shown that there must either be a conical singu…
We derive a general formula for renormalized entanglement entropy in even dimensional CFTs holographically dual to Einstein gravity in one dimension higher. In order to renormalize, we adapt the Kounterterm method to asymptotically locally AdS manifolds with conical singularities. On the gravity side, the computation considers extrinsic counterterms and the use of the replica trick a la Lewkowycz-Maldacena. The boundary counterterm B_d is shown to satisfy a key property, in direct analogy to the Euler density: when evaluated on a conically singular manifold, it decomposes into a regular part p…
We present a smooth extension of the Schwarzschild exterior geometry, where the singular interior is superceded by a vacuum phase with vanishing metric determinant. Unlike the Kruskal-Szekeres continuation, this solution to the first-order field equations in vacuum has no singularity in the curvature two-form fields, no horizon and no global time. The underlying non-analytic structure provides a distinct geometric realization of `mass' in classical gravity. We also find that the negative mass Schwarzschild solution does not admit a similar extension within the first-order theory. This is consi…
We present numerical evidence for the existence of new black hole solutions in $d\geq 6$ spacetime dimensions. They approach asymptotically the Minkowski background and have an event horizon topology $S^2\times S^{d-4}$. These static solutions share the basic properties of the nonrotating black rings in five dimensions, in particular the presence of a conical singularity.
The conical singularity in flat spacetime is mostly known as a model of the cosmic string or the wedge disclination in solids. Its another, equally important, function is to be a representative of quasiregular singularities. From all these of views it seems interesting to find out whether there exist other similar singularities. To specify what "similar" means I introduce the notion of the string-like singularity, which is, roughly speaking, an absolutely mild singularity concentrated on a curve or on a 2-surface S (depending on whether the space is three- of four-dimensional). A few such sing…
The geometry of the spinning black holes of standard Einstein theory in 2+1 dimensions, with a negative cosmological constant and without couplings to matter, is analyzed in detail. It is shown that the black hole arises from identifications of points of anti-de Sitter space by a discrete subgroup of $SO(2,2)$. The generic black hole is a smooth manifold in the metric sense. The surface $r=0$ is not a curvature singularity but, rather, a singularity in the causal structure. Continuing past it would introduce closed timelike lines. However, simple examples show the regularity of the metric at $…
A new model for cosmic strings (i.e. conical singularities) attached to black holes is proposed. These string are obtained by a explicit construction via limiting process from the so-called Bonnor rocket. This reveals quite surprising nature of their stress-energy tensor which contains first derivative of Dirac $δ$ distribution. Starting from the Bonnor rocket we explicitly construct the Schwarzschild solution witch conical singularity and the C-metric. In the latter case we show that there is a momentum flux through the cosmic string, causing the acceleration of the black hole and the amount …
The basic properties of the C-metric are well known. It describes a pair of causally separated black holes which accelerate in opposite directions under the action of forces represented by conical singularities. However, these properties can be demonstrated much more transparently by making use of recently developed coordinate systems for which the metric functions have a simple factor structure. These enable us to obtain explicit Kruskal-Szekeres-type extensions through the horizons and construct two-dimensional conformal Penrose diagrams. We then combine these into a three-dimensional pictur…

An Euclidean approach for investigating quantum aspects of a scalar field living on a class of D-dimensional static black hole space-times, including the extremal ones, is reviewed. The method makes use of a near horizon approximation of the metric and $ζ$-function formalism for evaluating the partition function and the expectation value of the field fluctuations $<ϕ^2(x)>$. After a review of the non-extreme black hole case, the extreme one is considered in some details. In this case, there is no conical singularity, but the finite imaginary time compactification introduces a cusp singularity.…
In this talk, we point out that curvature-regular asymptotically flat solitons with negative mass are contained in the Myers-Perry family in five dimensions. These solitons do not have horizon, but instead a conical NUT singularity of quasi-regular nature surrounded by naked CTCs. We show that this quasi-regular singularity can be made regular for a set of discrete values of angular momentum by introducing some periodic identifications, at least in the case in which two angular momentum parameters are equal. Although the spatial infinity of the solitons is diffeomorphic to S^1xS^3/R_n (n>2), t…
The spinning C-metric was discovered by Plebanski and Demianski as a generalization of the standard C-metric which is known to represent uniformly accelerated non-rotating black holes. We first transform the spinning C-metric into Weyl coordinates and analyze some of its properties as Killing vectors and curvature invariants. A transformation is then found which brings the metric into the canonical form of the radiative spacetimes with the boost-rotation symmetry. By analytically continuing the metric across "acceleration horizons", two new regions of the spacetime arise in which both Killing …
The C-metric is usually understood as describing two black holes which accelerate in opposite directions under the action of some conical singularity. Here, we examine all the solutions of this type which represent accelerating sources and investigate the null limit in which the accelerations become unbounded. We show that the resulting space-times represent spherical impulsive gravitational waves generated by snapping or expanding cosmic strings.
This paper deals with the geometry of supermassive cosmic strings. We have used an approach that enforces the spacetime of cosmic strings to also satisfy the conservation laws of a cylindric gravitational topological defect, that is a spacetime kink. In the simplest case of kink number unity, the entire energy range of supermassive strings becomes then quantized so that only cylindrical defects with linear energy density $Gμ=1/4$ (critical string) and $Gμ=1/2$ (extreme string) are allowed to occur in this range. It has been seen that the internal spherical coordinate $θ$ of the string metric e…
To apply the laws of General Relativity to quantum black holes, one first needs to remove the horizon singularity by means of Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates. This however doubles spacetime, which thereby is equipped with an exact binary symmetry. All particles near a black hole share the same symmetry, and conservation of this symmetry may completely remove the information paradox: the quantum black hole has no interior, or equivalently, the black hole interior is a quantum clone of the exterior region. These observations, totally overlooked in most of the literature on quantum black holes, reso…
Most general relativity textbooks devote considerable space to the simplest example of a black hole containing a singularity, the Schwarzschild geometry. However only a few discuss the dynamical process of gravitational collapse, by which black holes and singularities form. We present here two types of analytic models for this process, which we believe are the simplest available; the first involves collapsing spherical shells of light, analyzed mainly in Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates; the second involves collapsing spheres filled with a perfect fluid, analyzed mainly in Painleve-Gullstrand…
