In this paper we introduce a $q$-analogue of the single-element extensions of matroids for $q$-matroids, which we call one-dimensional extensions. To enumerate such extensions, we define a $q$-analogue of modular cuts and define a certain function which we call a modular cut selector. It assigns each newly appearing one-dimensional subspace to a modular cut. By using these notion, we prove the one-to-one correspondence between the one-dimensional extensions and the modular cut selectors. Furthermore, we define the canonnical representatives of the isomorphic class of the $q$-matroids, which enable us to enumerate non-isomorphic $q$-matroids without the paiwise isomorphism testing. As an application, we develop a classification algorithm for $q$-matroids, and classify all the $q$-matroids on ground spaces over $\mathbb{F}_2$ and $\mathbb{F}_3$ of dimension $4$ and $5$ respectively. We also determine some $5$-dimensional $q$-matroids related to the $q$-Fano plane, which is the $q$-analogue of the Fano plane, over $\mathbb{F}_2$.
Slater introduced the point-addition operation on graphs to classify 4-connected graphs. The $Γ$-extension operation on binary matroids is a generalization of the point-addition operation. In this paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions to preserve $k$-connectedness of a binary matroid under the $Γ$-extension operation. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition to get a connected matroid from a disconnected binary matroid using the $Γ$-extension operation.
The extension space conjecture of oriented matroid theory states that the space of all one-element, non-loop, non-coloop extensions of a realizable oriented matroid of rank $d$ has the homotopy type of a sphere of dimension $d-1$. We disprove this conjecture by showing the existence of a realizable uniform oriented matroid of high rank and corank 3 with disconnected extension space.
Introduced by Ardila (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2003), the Catalan matroid is obtained by defining the bases of the matroid using Dyck paths from $(0,0)$ to $(n,n)$. Further research has gone into the topic, with variants like lattice path matroids (introduced by Bonin, de Mier, and Noy (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2003)) and shifted matroids (introduced independently by Klivans (2003), and Ardila) being studied intensively. In this short note, we introduce the Young matroid, an extension of the Catalan matroid, where the bases are defined using the standard Young tableaux of a fixed shape. This…
We prove that the number of single element extensions of $M(K_{n+1})$ is $2^{{n\choose n/2}(1+o(1))}$. This is done using a characterization of extensions as "linear subclasses".
If S is a set of matroids, then the matroid M is S-fragile if, for every element e in E(M), either M\e or M/e has no minor isomorphic to a member of S. Excluded-minor characterizations often depend, implicitly or explicitly, on understanding classes of fragile matroids. In certain cases, when F is a minor-closed class of S-fragile matroids, and N is in F, the only members of F that contain N as a minor are obtained from N by increasing the length of fans. We prove that if this is the case, then we can certify it with a finite case-analysis. The analysis involves examining matroids that are at …
Adding elements to matroids can be fraught with difficulty. In the Vámos matroid $V_8$, there are four independent sets $X_1,X_2, X_3,$ and $X_4$ such that $(X_1 \cup X_2,X_3 \cup X_4)$ is a $3$-separation while exactly three of the local connectivities $\sqcap(X_1,X_{3})$, $\sqcap(X_1,X_{4})$, $\sqcap(X_2,X_{3})$, and $\sqcap(X_2,X_{4})$ are one, with the fourth being zero. As is well known, there is no extension of $V_8$ by a non-loop element $p$ such that $X_j \cup p$ is a circuit for all $j$. This paper proves that a matroid can be extended by a fixed element in the guts of a $3$-separatio…
Stanley's symmetrized chromatic polynomial is a generalization of the ordinary chromatic polynomial to a graph invariant with values in a ring of polynomials in infnitely many variables. The ordinary chromatic polynomial is a specialization of the Stanley's one. Our goal is to extend Stanley's chromatic polynomial to embedded graphs. In contrast to well-known extensions of, say, the Tutte polynomial from abstract to embedded graphs [5], we do not treat an embedded graph as an abstract graph endowed with additional information about the embedding. Instead, we consider the binary delta-matroid a…

Recently, Bollen, Draisma, and Pendavingh have introduced the Lindström valuation on the algebraic matroid of a field extension of characteristic p. Their construction passes through what they call a matroid flock and builds on some of the associated theory of matroid flocks which they develop. In this paper, we give a direct construction of the Lindström valuated matroid using the theory of inseparable field extensions. In particular, we give a description of the valuation, the valuated circuits, and the valuated cocircuits.
We prove that the extension complexity of the independence polytope of every regular matroid on $n$ elements is $O(n^6)$. Past results of Wong and Martin on extended formulations of the spanning tree polytope of a graph imply a $O(n^2)$ bound for the special case of (co)graphic matroids. However, the case of a general regular matroid was open, despite recent attempts. We also consider the extension complexity of circuit dominants of regular matroids, for which we give a $O(n^2)$ bound.
In 2004, Choe, Oxley, Sokal and Wagner established a tight connection between matroids and multiaffine real stable polynomials. Recently, Branden used this theory and a polynomial coming from the Vamos matroid to disprove the generalized Lax conjecture. Here we present a 10-element extension of the Vamos matroid and prove that its basis generating polynomial is real stable (i.e. that the matroid has the half-plane property). We do this via large sums of squares computations and a criterion for real stability given by Wagner and Wei. Like the Vamos matroid, this matroid is not representable ove…
The Splitter Theorem states that, if $N$ is a 3-connected proper minor of a 3-connected matroid $M$ such that, if $N$ is a wheel or whirl then $M$ has no larger wheel or whirl, respectively, then there is a sequence $M_0,..., M_n$ of 3-connected matroids with $M_0\cong N$, $M_n=M$ and for $i\in \{1,..., n\}$, $M_i$ is a single-element extension or coextension of $M_{i-1}$. Observe that there is no condition on how many extensions may occur before a coextension must occur. In this paper, we give a strengthening of the Splitter Theorem, as a result of which we can obtain, up to isomorphism, $M$ …
The Folkman-Lawrence topological representation theorem, which states that every (loop-free) oriented matroid of rank $r$ can be represented as a pseudosphere arrangement on the $(r-1)$-dimensional sphere $S^{r-1}$, is one of the most outstanding results in oriented matroid theory. In this paper, we provide a lower-dimensional version of the topological representation theorem for uniform matroid polytopes of rank $4$. We introduce $2$-weak configurations of points and pseudocircles ($2$-weak PPC configurations) on $S^2$ and prove that every uniform matroid polytope of rank $4$ can be represent…
We show that a field extension $K\subseteq L$ in positive characteristic $p$ and elements $x_e\in L$ for $e\in E$ gives rise to a matroid $M^σ$ on ground set $E$ with coefficients in a certain skew hyperfield $L^σ$. This skew hyperfield $L^σ$ is defined in terms of $L$ and its Frobenius action $σ:x\mapsto x^p$. The matroid underlying $M^σ$ describes the algebraic dependencies over $K$ among the $x_e\in L$ , and $M^σ$ itself comprises, for each $m\in \mathbb{Z}^E$, the space of $K$-derivations of $K\left(x_e^{p^{m_e}}: e\in E\right)$. The theory of matroid representation over hyperfields was de…
We study the rank 4 linear matroid $M(H_4)$ associated with the 4-dimensional root system $H_4$. This root system coincides with the vertices of the 600-cell, a 4-dimensional regular solid. We determine the automorphism group of this matroid, showing half of the 14,400 automorphisms are geometric and half are not. We prove this group is transitive on the flats of the matroid, and also prove this group action is primitive. We use the incidence properties of the flats and the {\it orthoframes} of the matroid as a tool to understand these automorphisms, and interpret the flats geometrically.

A conjecture of Graver from 1991 states that the generic $3$-dimensional rigidity matroid is the unique maximal abstract $3$-rigidity matroid with respect to the weak order on matroids. Based on a close similarity between the generic $d$-dimensional rigidity matroid and the generic $C_{d-2}^{d-1}$-cofactor matroid from approximation theory, Whiteley made an analogous conjecture in 1996 that the generic $C_{d-2}^{d-1}$-cofactor matroid is the unique maximal abstract $d$-rigidity matroid for all $d\geq 2$. We verify the case $d=3$ of Whiteley's conjecture in this paper. A key step in our proof i…
Enumeration of all combinatorial types of point configurations and polytopes is a fundamental problem in combinatorial geometry. Although many studies have been done, most of them are for 2-dimensional and non-degenerate cases. Finschi and Fukuda (2001) published the first database of oriented matroids including degenerate (i.e. non-uniform) ones and of higher ranks. In this paper, we investigate algorithmic ways to classify them in terms of realizability, although the underlying decision problem of realizability checking is NP-hard. As an application, we determine all possible combinatorial t…
A two-dimensional direction-length framework $(G,p)$ consists of a multigraph $G=(V;D,L)$ whose edge set is formed of "direction" edges $D$ and "length" edges $L$, and a realisation $p$ of this graph in the plane. The edges of the framework represent geometric constraints: length edges fix the distance between their endvertices, whereas direction edges specify the gradient of the line through both endvertices. A direction-length framework $(G,p)$ is globally rigid if every framework $(G,q)$ which satisfies the same direction and length constraints as $(G,p)$ can be obtained by translating $(G,…
A matroid complex is a pure complex such that every restriction is again pure. It is a long-standing open problem to classify all possible $h$-vectors of such complexes. In the case when the complex has dimension 1 we completely resolve this question. We also prove the 1-dimensional case of a conjecture of Stanley that all matroid $h$-vectors are pure ${O}$-sequences. Finally, we completely characterize the Stanley-Reisner ideals of 1-dimensional matroid complexes.
In this note we prove a lower bound for the rank of 2-dimensional generic rigidity matroid for regular graphs of degree four and five. Also, we give examples to show the order of the bound we give is sharp.
We introduce dual matroids of 2-dimensional simplicial complexes. Under certain necessary conditions, duals matroids are used to characterise embeddability in 3-space in a way analogous to Whitney's planarity criterion. We further use dual matroids to extend a 3-dimensional analogue of Kuratowski's theorem to the class of 2-dimensional simplicial complexes obtained from simply connected ones by identifying vertices or edges.
We provide the directed counterpart of a slight extension of Katoh and Tanigawa's result on rooted-tree decompositions with matroid constraints. Our result characterises digraphs having a packing of arborescences with matroid constraints. It is a proper extension of Edmonds' result on packing of spanning arborescences and implies - using a general orientation result of Frank - the above result of Katoh and Tanigawa. We also give a complete description of the convex hull of the incidence vectors of the basic packings of arborescences and prove that the mimimum cost version of the problem can be…
In this paper we describe a physical problem, based on electromagnetic fields, whose topological constraints are higher dimensional versions of Kirchhoff's laws, involving $2-$ simplicial complexes embedded in $\mathbb{R} ^3$ rather than graphs. However, we show that, for the skeleton of this complex, involving only triangles and edges, we can build a matroid dual which is a graph. On this graph we build an `ordinary' electrical circuit, solving which we obtain the solution to our original problem. Construction of this graph is through a `sliding' algorithm which simulates sliding on the surfa…
We prove the Lefschetz property for a certain class of finite-dimensional Gorenstein algebras associated to matroids. Our result implies the Sperner property of the vector space lattice. More generally, it is shown that the modular geometric lattice has the Sperner property. We also discuss the Gröbner fan of the defining ideal of our Gorenstein algebra.
We develop the theory of matroids over one-dimensional algebraic groups, with special emphasis on positive characteristic. In particular, we compute the Lindström valuations and Frobenius flocks of such matroids. Building on work by Evans and Hrushovski, we show that the class of algebraic matroids, paired with their Lindström valuations, is not closed under duality of valuated matroids.
We address optimization of nonlinear functions of the form $f(Wx)$, where $f:\R^d\to \R$ is a nonlinear function, $W$ is a $d\times n$ matrix, and feasible $x$ are in some large finite set $F$ of integer points in $\R^n$. One motivation is multi-objective discrete optimization, where $f$ trades off the linear functions given by the rows of $W$. Another motivation is to extend known results about polynomial-time linear optimization over discrete structures to nonlinear optimization. We assume that the convex hull of $F$ is well-described by linear inequalities. For example, the set of character…
Submodular functions are well-studied in combinatorial optimization, game theory and economics. The natural diminishing returns property makes them suitable for many applications. We study an extension of monotone submodular functions, which we call {\em weakly submodular functions}. Our extension includes some (mildly) supermodular functions. We show that several natural functions belong to this class and relate our class to some other recent submodular function extensions. We consider the optimization problem of maximizing a weakly submodular function subject to uniform and general matroid c…
We prove that simply connected local 2-dimensional simplicial complexes embed in 3-space if and only if their dual matroids are graphic. Examples are provided that the assumptions of simply connectedness and locality are necessary. This may be regarded as a 3-dimensional analogue of Whitney's planarity criterion from 1932.
The $f$-vector of a $d$-dimensional polytope $P$ stores the number of faces of each dimension. When $P$ is simplicial the Dehn--Sommerville relations condense the $f$-vector into the $g$-vector, which has length $\lceil{\frac{d+1}{2}}\rceil$. Thus, to determine the $f$-vector of $P$, we only need to know approximately half of its entries. This raises the question: Which $(\lceil{\frac{d+1}{2}}\rceil)$-subsets of the $f$-vector of a general simplicial polytope are sufficient to determine the whole $f$-vector? We prove that the answer is given by the bases of the Catalan matroid.
We characterize 2-dimensional complexes associated canonically with basis graphs of matroids as simply connected triangle-square complexes satisfying some local conditions. This proves a version of a (disproved) conjecture by Stephen Maurer (Conjecture 3 of S. Maurer, Matroid basis graphs I, JCTB 14 (1973), 216-240). We also establish Conjecture 1 from the same paper about the redundancy of the conditions in the characterization of basis graphs. We indicate positive-curvature-like aspects of the local properties of the studied complexes. We characterize similarly the corresponding 2-dimensiona…
The spinor variety is cut out by the quadratic Wick relations among the principal Pfaffians of an n x n skew-symmetric matrix. Its points correspond to n-dimensional isotropic subspaces of a 2n-dimensional vector space. In this paper we tropicalize this picture, and we develop a combinatorial theory of tropical Wick vectors and tropical linear spaces that are tropically isotropic. We characterize tropical Wick vectors in terms of subdivisions of Delta-matroid polytopes, and we examine to what extent the Wick relations form a tropical basis. Our theory generalizes several results for tropical l…
We introduce the notion of k-hyperclique complexes, i.e., the largest simplicial complexes on the set [n] with a fixed k-skeleton. These simplicial complexes are a higher-dimensional analogue of clique (or flag) complexes (case k=2) and they are a rich new class of simplicial complexes. We show that Dirac's theorem on chordal graphs has a higher-dimensional analogue in which graphs and clique complexes get replaced, respectively, by simplicial matroids and k-hyperclique complexes. We prove also a higher-dimensional analogue of Stanley's reformulation of Dirac's theorem on chordal graphs.
A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is rigid if the only edge-length preserving continuous motions of the vertices arise from isometries of $\mathbb{R}^d$. It is known that, when $(G,p)$ is generic, its rigidity depends only on the underlying graph $G$, and is determined by the rank of the edge set of $G$ in the generic $d$-dimensional rigidity matroid $\mathcal{R}_d$. Complete combinatorial descriptions of the rank function of this matroid are known when $d=1,2$, and imply that all circuits in $\mathcal{R}_d$ are generically rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$ when $d=1,2$. Determining the ra…
We design an FPRAS to count the number of bases of any matroid given by an independent set oracle, and to estimate the partition function of the random cluster model of any matroid in the regime where $0<q<1$. Consequently, we can sample random spanning forests in a graph and (approximately) compute the reliability polynomial of any matroid. We also prove the thirty year old conjecture of Mihail and Vazirani that the bases exchange graph of any matroid has expansion at least 1. One of our key observations is a close connection between pure simplicial complexes and multiaffine homogeneous polyn…
Bárány, Kalai, and Meshulam recently obtained a topological Tverberg-type theorem for matroids, which guarantees multiple coincidences for continuous maps from a matroid complex to d-dimensional Euclidean space, if the matroid has sufficiently many disjoint bases. They make a conjecture on the connectivity of k-fold deleted joins of a matroid with many disjoint bases, which would yield a much tighter result - but we provide a counterexample already for the case of k=2, where a tight Tverberg-type theorem would be a topological Radon theorem for matroids. Nevertheless, we prove the topological …
We study the moduli space of $d$-dimensional linear subspaces contained in a fixed $(d+1)$-dimensional linear variety $X$, and its tropicalization. We prove that these moduli spaces are linear subspaces themselves, and thus their tropicalization is completely determined by their associated (valuated) matroids. We show that these matroids can be interpreted as the matroid of lines of the hyperplane arrangement corresponding to $X$, and generically are equal to a Dilworth truncation of the free matroid. In this way, we can describe combinatorially tropicalized Fano schemes and tropicalizations o…
