A relation between certain irreducible character values of the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$ ($\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \wr S_n$) and the symmetric group $S_{2n}$ was proved by F. Lübeck and D. Prasad in 2021. Their proof is algebraic in nature and uses Lie theory. Using combinatorial methods, R. Adin and Y. Roichman proved a similar relation between certain character values of $G\wr S_n$ and $S_{rn}$, where $G$ is an abelian group of order $r$ (generalizing the result of Lübeck-Prasad). Using their result, we prove yet another relation between certain irreducible character values of $G\wr S_n$ and $S_{rn}$, where $G$ is an abelian group of order $r$.
A character identity which relates irreducible character values of the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$ to those of the symmetric group $S_{2n}$ was recently proved by Lübeck and Prasad. Their proof is algebraic and involves Lie theory. We present a short combinatorial proof of this identity, as well as a generalization to other wreath products.
Let $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ denote the wreath product of the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z$ with the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$. We define generating functions for monomial (induced one-dimensional) characters of $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ and express these in terms of determinants and permanents. This extends work of Littlewood ({\em The Theory of Group Characters and Representations of Groups}, 1940) and Merris and Watkins ({\em Linear Algebra Appl.}, {\bf 64}, 1985) on generating functions for the monomial characters of $\mathfrak S_n$.
We examine the conjugacy growth series of all wreath products of the finitary permutation groups $\text{Sym}(X)$ and $\text{Alt}(X)$ for an infinite set $X$. We determine their asymptotics, and we characterize the limiting behavior between the $\text{Alt}(X)$ and $\text{Sym}(X)$ wreath products. In particular, their ratios form a limit if and only if the dimension of the symmetric wreath product is twice the dimension of the alternating wreath product.
We introduce Macdonald polynomials indexed by $n$-tuples of partitions and characterized by certain orthogonality and triangularity relations. We prove that they can be explicitly given as products of ordinary Macdonald polynomials depending on special alphabets. With this factorization in hand, we establish their most basic properties, such as explicit formulas for their norm-squared, evaluation and reproducing kernel. Moreover, we show that the $q,t$-Kostka coefficients associated to the multi-Macdonald polynomials are positive and correspond to $q,t$-analogs of the dimensions of the irreduc…
Given natural numbers m and n, we define a deflation map from the characters of the symmetric group S_{mn} to the characters of S_n. This map is obtained by first restricting a character of S_{mn} to the wreath product S_m \wr S_n, and then taking the sum of the irreducible constituents of the restricted character on which the base group S_m \times ... \times S_m acts trivially. We prove a combinatorial formula which gives the values of the images of the irreducible characters of S_{mn} under this map. We also prove an analogous result for more general deflation maps in which the base group is…
The recently developed theory of Schur rings over a finite cyclic group is generalized to Schur rings over a ring R being a product of Galois rings of coprime characteristics. It is proved that if the characteristic of R is odd, then as in the cyclic group case any pure Schur ring over R is the tensor product of a pure cyclotomic ring and Schur rings of rank 2 over non-fields. Moreover, it is shown that in contrast to the cyclic group case there are non-pure Schur rings over R that are not generalized wreath products.
Given a chain of groups $G_0 \le G_1 \le G_2 ... $, we may form the corresponding chain of their representation rings, together with induction and restriction operators. We may let $\textrm{Res}^l$ denote the operator which restricts down $l$ steps, and similarly for $\textrm{Ind}^l$. Observe then that $\textrm{Ind}^l \textrm{Res}^l$ is an operator from any particular representation ring to itself. The central question that this paper addresses is: "What happens if the $\textrm{Ind}^l \textrm{Res}^l$ operator is a polynomial in the $\textrm{Ind} \textrm{Res}$ operator?". We show that chains of…
We prove that $(\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n \times \mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}, \text{diag} (\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}) )$ is a symmetric Gelfand pair, where $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n$ is the wreath product of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_k$ with the symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_n.$ The proof is based on the study of the $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}$-conjugacy classes of $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n.$ We define the generalized characters of $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n$ using the zonal spherical functions of $(\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n \times \mathbb{…
We study the generating polynomial of the flag major index with each one-dimensional character, called signed Mahonian polynomial, over the colored permutation group, the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. Using the insertion lemma of Han and Haglund-Loehr-Remmel and a signed extension established by Eu et al., we derive the signed Mahonian polynomial over the quotients of parabolic subgroups of the colored permutation group, for a variety of systems of coset representatives in terms of subsequence restrictions. This generalizes the related work over parabolic quotients…
The graph theoretic properties of the clustering coefficient, characteristic (or average) path length, global and local efficiency, provide valuable information regarding the structure of a graph. These four properties have applications to biological and social networks and have dominated much of the the literature in these fields. While much work has done in applied settings, there has yet to be a mathematical comparison of these metrics from a theoretical standpoint. Motivated by networks appearing in neuroscience, we show in this paper that these properties can be linked together using a si…
