Composites of ferroelectric and paraelectric perovskites have attracted a lot of attention due to their application potential in energy storage as well as novel computing and memory devices. So far the main focus of research has been on superlattices and ferroelectric particles in a paraelectric matrix, while the impact of paraelectric inclusions on the ferroelectric matrix is surprisingly underrepresented. To close this gap in knowledge we perform molecular dynamics simulations using an $ab\ initio$ derived effective Hamiltonian for BaTiO$_3$--SrTiO$_3$ and reveal the dependency of phase stability and phase transitions on the size and distances of paraelectric inclusions. We discuss how the combination of compressive strain and depolarization fields at the SrTiO$_3$ interfaces induces large local polarization, complex domain structures and coexisting phases as well as diffuse phase transitions and reduced coercive fields.
We present an inexpensive first-principles approach for describing quantum paraelectricity that combines density functional theory (DFT) treatment of the electronic subsystem with quantum mechanical treatment of the ions through solution of the single-particle Schrödinger equation with the DFT-calculated potential. Using BaTiO$_3$, SrTiO$_3$ and KTaO$_3$ as model systems, we show that the approach can straightforwardly distinguish between ferroelectric, paraelectric and quantum paraelectric materials, based on simple quantities extracted from standard density functional and density functional …
Whereas low-temperature ferroelectrics have a well understood ordered spatial dipole arrangement, the fate of these dipoles in paraelectric phases remains poorly understood. Using density functional theory (DFT), we find that unlike the case in conventional non-polar ABO$_3$ compounds illustrated here for cubic BaZrO$_3$, the origin of the distribution of the B site off-centering in cubic paraelectric such as BaTiO$_3$ is an intrinsic, energy stabilizing symmetry breaking. Minimizing the internal energy E of a constrained cubic phase already reveals the formation of a distribution of intrinsic…
Recent experiments have demonstrated that light can induce a transition from the quantum paraelectric to the ferroelectric phase of SrTiO$_3$. Here, we investigate this terahertz field-induced ferroelectric phase transition by solving the time-dependent lattice Schrödinger equation based on first-principles calculations. We find that ferroelectricity originates from a light-induced mixing between ground and first excited lattice states in the quantum paraelectric phase. In agreement with the experimental findings, our study shows that the non-oscillatory second harmonic generation signal can b…
We demonstrate how the quantum paraelectric ground state of SrTiO$_3$ can be accessed via a microscopic $ab~initio$ approach based on density functional theory. At low temperature the quantum fluctuations are strong enough to stabilize the paraelectric phase even though a classical description would predict a ferroelectric phase. We find that accounting for quantum fluctuations of the lattice and for the strong coupling between the ferroelectric soft mode and lattice elongation is necessary to achieve quantitative agreement with experimental frequency of the ferroelectric soft mode. The temper…
"Hidden phases" are metastable collective states of matter that are typically not accessible on equilibrium phase diagrams. These phases can host exotic properties in otherwise conventional materials and hence may enable novel functionality and applications, but their discovery and access are still in early stages. Using intense terahertz electric field excitation, we show that an ultrafast phase transition into a hidden ferroelectric phase can be dynamically induced in the quantum paraelectric SrTiO$_3$. The induced lowering in crystal symmetry yields dramatic changes in the phonon excitation…
In ferroelectricity, atomic-scale dipole moments interact collectively to produce strong electro-mechanical coupling and switchable macroscopic polarization. Hence, the functionality of ferroelectrics emerges at a solid-solid phase transformation that is accompanied by a sudden disappearance of an inversion symmetry. Much effort has been put to understand the ferroelectric transition at the polarization length scale. Nevertheless, the dipole-moment origin of ferroelectricity has remained elusive. Here, we used variable-temperature high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to reveal the …
Negative capacitance in BaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in an atomistic effective Hamiltonian model, using fluctuation formulas for responses to the local macroscopic field that incorporates depolarizing fields. We show epitaxial strain can tune the negative capacitance of the BaTiO$_3$ ferroelectric layer and the overall capacitance of the system over a broad temperature range. In addition, we predict and explain an original switching of the negative capacitance from the BaTiO$_3$ layer to the SrTiO$_3$ layer at low temperatures for intermediate st…
We show with first-principles molecular dynamics the persistence of intrinsic $\langle111\rangle$ Ti off-centerings for BaTiO$_3$ in its cubic paraelectric phase. Intriguingly, these are inconsistent with the Pm$\bar 3$m space group often used to atomistically model this phase using density functional theory or similar methods. Therefore we deploy a systematic symmetry analysis to construct representative structural models in the form of supercells that satisfy a desired point symmetry but are built from the combination of lower-symmetry primitive cells. We define as structural prototypes the …
Origin of the large phonon band-gap in SrTiO3 and the vibrational signatures of ferroelectricity in ATiO3 perovskite: First principles lattice dynamics and inelastic neutron scattering of PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3
First-principles accurate total-energy surfaces for polar structural distortions of BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and SrTiO3: consequences to structural transition temperatures
The three dimensional distribution of the X-ray diffuse scattering intensity of BaTiO$_3$ has been recorded in a synchrotron experiment and simultaneously computed using molecular dynamics simulations of a shell-model. Together these have allowed the details of the disorder in paraelectric BaTiO$_3$ to be clarified. The narrow sheets of diffuse scattering, related to the famous anisotropic longitudinal correlations of Ti ions, are shown to be caused entirely by the overdamped anharmonic soft phonon branch. This finding demonstrates that the occurrence of narrow sheets of diffuse scattering agr…
In order to establish the correlation between the magnetoelectric coupling and magnetic instability, we have studied the structural, magnetic, and ferroelectric properties of \textit{x}BaTiO${_3}$-(1-\textit{x})BiCoO${_3}$ as a function of BaTiO$_3$ concentration ($x$) and volume. The $G-$type antiferromagnetic ordering is found to be energetically favorable for $x<$ 0.45 and higher concentrations stabilize with nonmagnetic states. We observe metamagnetic spin state transitions associated with paraelectric to ferrolectric transitions as a function of volume and $x$ using synchrotron diffraction…
Functional devices with ultrathin ferroelectric layers have been attracted as a promising candidate for next-generation memory and logic device applications. Using the ultrathin ferroelectric layers, particularly approaching the two-dimensional limit, however, it is still challenging to control ferroelectric switching and to observe ferroelectricity by spectroscopic tools. In particular, conventional methods such as electrical measurements and piezoelectric response force microscopy are very limited due to leakage currents and the smallness of the ferroelectric signals. Here, we show that the …
The Landau theory of 180 degrees domain walls in BaTiO3 type ferroelectric particles is presented. Results of exact description of domain walls in bulk enabled us to formulate variational approach to theory of domain walls in corresponding small particles. The depolarization field effects and the space-charge layers are taken into account in the samples of the cube form. It was found that at low temperatures well known hyperbolic tangent wall profile is a good approximation for description of domain walls. Near the transition temperature it is more appropriate to speak about two walls separati…
The polarization response of antiferroelectrics to electric fields is such that the materials can store large energy densities, which makes them promising candidates for energy storage applications in pulsed-power technologies. However, relatively few materials of this kind are known. Here we consider ferroelectric/paraelectric superlattices as artificial electrostatically-engineered antiferroelectrics. Specifically, using high-throughput second-principles calculations, we engineer PbTiO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ superlattices to optimize their energy-storage performance at room temperature (to maximi…
Elastic softening in the paraelastic phases of Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$ is largest near the transition temperatures and decreases on heating smoothly over extended temperature ranges. Softening extends to the highest measured temperature(850~K) for Ba-rich compounds. The temperature evolution of the excess compliance of the precursor softening follows a power law $δS\propto |T-T_{\mathrm{C}}|^{-κ}$\ with a characteristic exponent $κ$\ ranging between 1.5 in SrTiO$_{3}$\ and 0.2 in BaTiO$_{3}$. The latter value is below the estimated lower bounds of displacive systems with three orthogonal s…
The defect stability in a prototypical perovskite oxide superlattice consisting of SrTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$ (STO/PTO) is determined using first principles density functional theory calculations. Specifically, the oxygen vacancy formation energies E$_v$ in the paraelectric and ferroelectric phases of a superlattice with four atomic layers of STO and four layers of PTO (4STO/4PTO) are determined and compared. The effects of charge state, octahedral rotation, polarization, and interfaces on the E$_v$ are examined. The formation energies vary layer-by-layer in the superlattices, with E$_v$ being hi…
The nature of the "forbidden" local- and long-range polar order in nominally nonpolar paraelectric phases of ferroelectric materials has been an open question since the discovery of ferroelectricity in oxide perovskites (ABO3). A currently considered model suggests locally correlated displacements of B-site atoms along a subset of <111> cubic directions. Such offsite displacements have been confirmed experimentally, however, being essentially dynamic in nature they cannot account for the static nature of the symmetry-forbidden polarization implied by the macroscopic experiments. Here, in an at…
A method for evaluating the piezoelectric response of unpoled ferroelectric ceramics from elastic and dielectric measurements is proposed and tested on BaTiO$_3$. The method is based on the observation that the softening in a ferroelectric phase with respect to the paraelectric phase is of piezoelectric origin. The angular averages of the piezoelectric softening in unpoled ceramics are calculated for ferroelectric phases of different symmetries. The expression of the orientational average with the piezoelectric and dielectric constants of single crystal tetragonal BaTiO$_3$ from the literature…
Fluctuating orders in solids are generally considered high-temperature precursors of broken symmetry phases. However, in some cases these fluctuations persist to zero temperature and prevent the emergence of long-range order, as for example observed in quantum spin and dipolar liquids. $SrTiO_3$ is a quantum paraelectric in which dipolar fluctuations grow when the material is cooled, although a long-range ferroelectric order never sets in. We show that the nonlinear excitation of lattice vibrations with mid-infrared optical pulses can induce polar order in $SrTiO_3$ up to temperatures in exces…
