We carry out a theoretical investigation to clarify the dynamic property of photo-created nano-sized ferroelectric cluster observed in the paraelectric BaTiO3 as a real time correlation of speckle pattern between two soft X-ray laser pulses, at just above the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition temperature. Based on a model with coupled soft X-ray photon and ferroelectric phonon mode, we study the time dependence of scattering probability by using a perturbative expansion approach. The cluster-associated phonon softening as well as central peak effects are well reproduced in the phonon spectral function via quantum Monte Carlo simulation. Besides, it is found that the time dependence of speckle correlation is determined by the relaxation dynamics of ferroelectric clusters. Near the transition point, cluster excitation is stable, leading to a long relaxation time. While, at high temperature, cluster structure is subject to the thermal fluctuation, ending up with a short relaxation time.
We calculate the ferroelectric polarization dynamics induced by a femtosecond midinfrared pulse as measured in the recent experiment by R. Mankowsky et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 197601 (2017). It is due to the nonlinear coupling of the excited infrared-active phonon with the ferroelectric mode or to the excitation of the ferroelectric mode itself depending on the pulse frequency. To begin with, we write the LiNbO$_3$ crystal symmetry invariant thermodynamic potential including electric field and nonlinear phonon coupling terms. We solve the equations of motion determined by this potential for…
Intense, few-cycle pulses in the terahertz frequency range have strong potential for schemes of control over vibrational modes in solid-state materials in the electronic ground-state. Here we report an experiment using single cycle terahertz pulses to directly excite lattice vibrations in the ferroelectric material $\mathrm{Sn_2P_2S_6}$ and ultrafast x-ray diffraction to quantify the resulting structural dynamics. A model of a damped harmonic oscillator driven by the transient electric field of the terahertz pulses describes well the movement of the Sn$^{2+}$ ion along the ferroelectric soft m…
For the first time we predict the conditions of superparaelectric phase appearance in the ensemble of non-interacting spherical ferroelectric nanoparticles. The superparaelectricity in nanoparticle was defined by analogy with superparamagnetism, obtained earlier in small nanoparticles made of paramagnetic material. Calculations of correlation radius, energetic barriers of polarization reorientation and polarization response to external electric field, were performed within Landau-Ginzburg phenomenological approach for perovskites Pb(Zr,Ti)O3, BiFeO3 and uniaxial ferroelectrics rochelle salt an…
Epitaxial (001)-, (118)-, and (104)-oriented Nd-doped Bi4Ti3O12 films have been grown by pulsed-laser deposition from a Bi4-xNdxTi3O12 (x=0.85) target on SrRuO3 coated single-crystal (100)-, (110)-, and (111)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates, respectively. X-ray diffraction illustrated a unique epitaxial relationship between film and substrate for all orientations. We observed a strong dependence of ferroelectric properties on the film orientation, with no ferroelectric activity in an (001)-oriented film; a remanent polarization, 2Pr, of 12 microC/cm2 and coercive field, Ec, of 120 kV/cm in a (118)-…
The ability to manipulate ferroelectrics at ultrafast speeds has long been an elusive target for materials research. Coherently exciting the ferroelectric mode with ultrashort optical pulses holds the promise to switch the ferroelectric polarization on femtosecond timescale, two orders of magnitude faster compared to what is possible today with pulsed electric fields. Here, we report on the demonstration of ultrafast optical reversal of the ferroelectric polarization in LiNbO3. Rather than driving the ferroelectric mode directly, we couple to it indirectly by resonant excitation of an auxiliar…
An atomistic approach is used to investigate finite-temperature properties of ferroelectric nanodots that are embedded in a polarizable medium. Different phases are predicted, depending on the ferroelectric strengths of the material constituting the dot and of the system forming the medium. In particular, novel states, exhibiting a coexistence between two kinds of order parameters or possessing a peculiar order between dipole vortices of adjacent dots, are discovered. We also discuss the origins of these phases, e.g. depolarizing fields and medium-driven interactions between dots.
Using a combination of computational simulations, atomic-scale resolution imaging and phenomenological modelling, we examine the underlying mechanism for nanodomain restructuring in lead zirconate titanate (PZT) nanodisks driven by electron beams. The observed subhertz nanodomain dynamics are identified with relaxation oscillations where the charging/discharging cycle time is determined by saturation of charge traps and nanodomain wall creep. These results are unusual in that they indicate very slow athermal dynamics in nanoscale systems.
Herein, we elucidate the impact of tubular confinement on the structure and relaxation behaviour of poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) and how these affect the para-/ferroelectric behavior of this polymer. We use PVDF nanotubes that were solidified in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements evidence a bimodal relaxation process for PVDF nanotubes: besides the bulk-like -relaxation, we detect a notably slower relaxation that is associated with the PVDF regions of restricted dynamics at the interface with the AAO pore. Strickingly, both the bulk-like and the i…
We report on extensive domain wall motion in ferroelectric nanocapacitor arrays investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy. Under a much longer or higher bias voltage pulse, compared to typical switching pulse conditions, domain walls start to propagate into the neighbouring capacitors initiating a significant cross-talk. The propagation paths and the propagated area into the neighbouring capacitors were always the same under repeated runs. The experimental and the simulated results show that the observed cross-talk is related to the capacitor parameters combined with local defects. The re…
Freestanding BaTiO3 nanodots exhibit domain structures characterized by distinct quadrants of ferroelastic 90° domains in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. These differ significantly from flux-closure domain patterns in the same systems imaged by piezoresponse force microscopy. Based upon a series of phase field simulations of BaTiO3 nanodots, we suggest that the TEM patterns result from a radial electric field arising from electron beam charging of the nanodot. For sufficiently large charging, this converts flux-closure domain patterns to quadrant patterns with radial net p…
A new approach to all-optical detection and control of the coupling between electric and magnetic order on ultrafast timescales is achieved using time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) to study a ferroelectric (FE)/ferromagnet (FM) oxide heterostructure. We use femtosecond optical pulses to modify the spin alignment in a Ba$_{0.1}$Sr$_{0.9}$TiO$_{3}$(BSTO)/La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) heterostructure and selectively probe the ferroelectric response using SHG. In this heterostructure, the pump pulses photoexcite non-equilibrium quasiparticles in LCMO, which rapidly interact with…
Formation of polar nano regions through solid-solution additions are known to enhance significantly the functional properties of ferroelectric materials. Despite considerable progress in characterizing the microscopic behavior of polar nano regions, understanding their real-space atomic structure and dynamics of formation remains a considerable challenge. Here, using the method of dynamic pair distribution function, we provide direct insights into the role of solid-solution additions towards the stabilization of polar nano regions in the Pb-free ferroelectric of Ba(Zr,Ti)O3. It is shown that f…
Using direct variational method with 2-parametric trial function and Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire thermodynamical approach, we derived analytical expressions for polarization spatial redistribution in the ferroelectrics caused by the biased Scanning Probe Microscope probe. We demonstrate that the shape of nanodomain induced by the probe electric field can be either oblate or prolate depending on the ferroelectric nonlinearity strength. For typical ferroelectric material parameters and probe apex geometry the domain nucleus aspect ratio is close to dielectric anisotropy factor. Corresponding coer…
Piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties in the two dimensional (2D) limit are highly desired for nanoelectronic, electromechanical, and optoelectronic applications. Here we report the first experimental evidence of out-of-plane piezoelectricity and ferroelectricity in van der Waals layered $α$-In2Se3 nano-flakes. The non-centrosymmetric R3m symmetry of the $α$-In2Se3 samples is confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy, second-harmonic generation, and Raman spectroscopy measurements. Domains with opposite polarizations are visualized by piezo-response force microscopy. Single-p…
We observe periodic faceting of 8-nm diameter ferroelectric disks on a 10 s time-scale when thin Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) film is exposed to constant high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) beams. The oscillation is between circular disk geometry and sharply faceted hexagons. The behavior is analogous to that of spin structure and magnetic domain wall velocity oscillations in permalloy [A. Bisig et al., Nature Commun. 4, 2328 (2013)], involving overshoot and de-pinning from defects [C. P. Amann, et al., J. Rheol. 57, 149-175 (2013)].
The nature of the "forbidden" local- and long-range polar order in nominally nonpolar paraelectric phases of ferroelectric materials has been an open question since the discovery of ferroelectricity in oxide perovskites (ABO3). A currently considered model suggests locally correlated displacements of B-site atoms along a subset of <111> cubic directions. Such offsite displacements have been confirmed experimentally, however, being essentially dynamic in nature they cannot account for the static nature of the symmetry-forbidden polarization implied by the macroscopic experiments. Here, in an at…
We give detailed analysis of the effect of depolarizing field in nanometer-size ferroelectric capacitors studied by Kim et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 237602 (2005)]. We calculate a critical thickness of the homogeneous state and its stability with respect to domain formation for strained thin films of BaTiO3 on SrRuO3/SrTiO3 substrate within the Landau theory. While the former (2.5nm) is the same as given by ab-initio calculations, the actual critical thickness is set by the domains at 1.6nm. There is a large Merz's activation field for polarization relaxation. Remarkably, the results show a_ne…
Local inhomogeneities known as polar nanoregions (PNR) play a key role in governing the dielectric properties of relaxor ferroelectrics - a special class of material that exhibits an enormous electromechanical response and is easily polarized with an external field. Using neutron inelastic scattering methods, we show that the PNR can also significantly affect the structural properties of the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-4.5%PbTiO3 (PZN-4.5%PT). A strong interaction is found between the PNR and the propagation of sound waves, i.e. acoustic phonons, the visibility of which can be enhan…
I propose a method for ultrafast switching of ferroelectric polarization using mid-infrared pulses. This involves selectively exciting the highest frequency $A_1$ phonon mode of a ferroelectric material with an intense mid-infrared pulse. Large amplitude oscillations of this mode provides a unidirectional force to the lattice such that it displaces along the lowest frequency $A_1$ phonon mode coordinate because of a nonlinear coupling of the type $g Q_{\textrm{P}} Q_{\textrm{IR}}^2$ between the two modes. First principles calculations show that this coupling is large in transition-metal oxide …
Systems that produce crackling noises such as Barkhausen pulses are statistically similar and can be compared with one another. In this project, the Barkhausen noise of three ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) samples were demonstrated to be compatible with avalanche statistics. The peaks of the slew-rate (time derivative of current $dI/dt$) squared, defined as jerks, were statistically analysed and shown to obey power-laws. The critical exponents obtained for three PZT samples (B, F and S) were 1.73, 1.64 and 1.61, respectively, with a standard deviation of 0.04. This power-law behav…
Ferroic materials are well known to exhibit heterogeneity in the form of domain walls. Understanding the properties of these boundaries is crucial for controlling functionality with external stimuli and for realizing their potential for ultra-low power memory and logic devices as well as novel computing architectures. In this work, we employ synchrotron-based near-field infrared nano-spectroscopy to reveal the vibrational properties of ferroelastic (90$^\circ$ ferroelectric) domain walls in the hybrid improper ferroelectric Ca$_3$Ti$_2$O$_7$. By locally mapping the Ti-O stretching and Ti-O-Ti …
Time-dependent speckle pattern of paraelectric barium titanate observed in a soft x-ray laser pump-probe measurement is theoretically investigated as a correlated optical response to the pump and probe pulses. The scattering probability is calculated based on a model with coupled soft x-ray photon and ferroelectric phonon mode. It is found that the speckle variation is related with the relaxation dynamics of ferroelectric clusters created by the pump pulse. Additionally, critical slowing down of cluster relaxation arises on decreasing temperature towards the paraelectric-ferroelectric transiti…
Bounded charges induced by the polarization gradient in finite-size ferroelectrics are known to produce the unfavorable depolarization electric field that suppresses the uniform ferroelectric state. To reduce the depolarization energy the non-uniform vortex (toroidal) state is formed inside ferroelectric nano-particles, nano-disks, and nano-rods. Based on self-consistent solution of Ginzburg-Landau equations coupled with electrostatic equations, we study the multivortex toroidal states appearing in the nanometric easy-plane ferroelectric cylinder. The geometrical textures, critical temperature…
We analyze theoretically the finite-temperature polarization dynamic in displacive-type ferroelectrics. In particular we consider the thermally-activated switching time of a single-domain ferroelectric polarization studied by means of the Landau-Khalatnikov equation, extended as to capture thermal fluctuations. The results are compared with the switching time formula that follows from the analytical solution of Pauli master equations. In a second step we focus on the phase diagram of a prototypical ferroelectric as described by the temperature-dependent Landau-Devonshire model including therma…
The equilibrium sizes of micro- and nano-domains caused by electric field of atomic force microscope tip in ferroelectric semiconductor crystals have been calculated. The domain was considered as a prolate semi-ellipsoid with rather thin domain walls. For the first time we modified the Landauer model allowing for semiconductor properties of the sample and the surface energy of the domain butt. The free carriers inside the crystal lead to the formation of the screening layer around the domain, which partially shields its interior from the depolarization field. We expressed the radius and length…
We present a quantitative analysis of the phonon lineshapes obtained by neutron inelastic scattering methods in the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN). Differences in the shapes and apparent positions of the transverse acoustic (TA) and transverse optic (TO) phonon peaks measured in the (300) and (200) Brillouin zones at 690 K are well described by a simple model that couples the TA and soft TO modes in which the primary parameter is the wave vector and temperature-dependent TO linewidth Gamma(q,T). This mode-coupling picture provides a natural explanation for the uniform displacemen…
The size dependence of the ferroelectric properties of BaTiO$_3$ nanowires is studied from first-principles. We show that the ferroelectric distortion along the wire axis disappears below a critical diameter of about 1.2 nm. This disappearance is related to a global contraction of the unit cell resulting from low atomic coordinations at the wire surface. It is shown that a ferroelectric distortion can be recovered under appropriate tensile strain conditions.
To optimize the performance of multifunctional carbon nanotube-ferroelectric devices, it is necessary to understand both the polarization and charge dynamics effects on their transconductance. Directly comparing ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 and dielectric SrTiO3 field effect transistors, we show that the two effects strongly compete, with transient charge dynamics initially masking up to 40% of the ferroelectric field effect. For applications, it is therefore crucial to maximize the quality of the ferroelectric film and the interface with the carbon nanotube to take full advantage of the swi…
The polar states of uniaxial ferroelectric nanoparticles interacting with a surface system of electronic and ionic charges with a broad distribution of mobilities is explored, which corresponds to the experimental case of nanoparticles in solution or ambient conditions. The nonlinear interactions between the ferroelectric dipoles and surface charges with slow relaxation dynamics in an external field lead to the emergence of a broad range of paraelectric-like, antiferroelectric-like ionic, and ferroelectric-like ferroionic states. The crossover between these states can be controlled not only by…
The van der Waals layered material CuInP2S6 features interesting functional behavior, including the existence of four uniaxial polarization states, polarization reversal against the electric field through Cu ion migration, a negative-capacitance regime, and reversible extraction of Cu ions. At the heart of these characteristics lies the high mobility of Cu ions, which also determines the spontaneous polarization. Therefore, Cu migration across the lattice results in unusual ferroelectric behavior. Here, we demonstrate how the interplay of polar and ionic properties provides a path to ionically…
Optically-induced phase transitions of the manganite $\rm Pr_{1/3}Ca_{2/3}MnO_3$ have been simulated using a model Hamiltonian, that captures the dynamics of strongly correlated charge, orbital, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom. Its parameters have been extracted from first-principles calculations. Beyond a critical intensity of a femto-second light pulse, the material undergoes ultra-fast and non-thermal magnetic phase transition from a non-collinear to collinear antiferromagnetic phases. The light-pulse excites selectively either a spin-nematic or a ferroelectric phase depending on the l…

When decreasing the size of nanoscale magnetic particles their magnetization becomes vulnerable to thermal fluctuations as approaching the superparamgnetic limit, hindering thus applications relying on a stable magnetization. Here, we show theoretically that a magnetoelectric coupling to a ferroelectric substrate renders possible the realization of substantially smaller nano clusters with thermally stable magnetization. For an estimate of cluster size we perform calculations with realistic material parameters for iron nano particles on ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrate. We find, steering the pola…
We report phonon renormalization induced by an external electric field E in ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] nanofibers through measuring the E-dependent thermal conductivity. Our experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical ones derived from the lattice dynamics. The renormalization is attributed to the anharmonicity that modifies the phonon spectrum when the atoms are pulled away from their equilibrium positions by the electric field. Our finding provides an efficient way to manipulate the thermal conductivity by tuning external …
The concept of a nano-actuator that uses ferroelectric switching to generate enhanced displacements is explored using a phase-field model. The actuator has a ground state in the absence of applied electric field that consists of polarized domains oriented to form a flux closure. When electric field is applied, the polarization reorients through ferroelectric switching and produces strain. The device is mechanically biased by a substrate and returns to the ground state when electric field is removed, giving a repeatable actuation cycle. The mechanical strains which accompany ferroelectric switc…
PbTiO3-based nano-scale dots and tubes have received a great deal of attention owing to their potential applications to nonvolatile memories and multi-functional devices. As for the size effect of 180o stripe domains in ferroelectric thin films, there have been extensive reports on the thickness-dependent domain periodicity. All these studies have revealed that the domain periodicity of 180o stripe domains scales with the film thickness (d) according to the classical Landau-Lifshitz-Kittel (LLK) scaling law down to the thickness of ~2 nm. In the case of PbTiO3 nanodots, however, we obtained a …
The paper suggests to treat the infrared reflectivity spectra of single crystal perovskite relaxors as fine-grained ferroelectric ceramics: locally frozen polarization makes the dielectric function strongly anisotropic in the phonon frequency range and the random orientation of the polarization at nano-scopic scale requires to take into account the inhomogeneous depolarization field. Employing a simple effective medium approximation (Bruggeman symmetrical formula) to dielectric function describing the polar optic modes as damped harmonic oscillators turns out to be sufficient for reproducing a…
The engineering of phononic resonances in ferroelectric structures appears as a new knob in the design and realization of novel multifunctional devices. In this work we experimentally study phononic resonators based on insulating (BaTiO3, SrTiO3) and metallic (SrRuO3) oxides. We experimentally demonstrate the confinement of acoustic waves in the 100 GHz frequency range in a phonon nanocavity, the time and spatial beatings resulting from the coupling of two different hybrid nanocavities forming an acoustic molecule, and the direct measurement of Bloch-like oscillations of acoustic phonons in a …
Combining our comprehensive investigations of polarization evolution, soft-mode by Raman scattering and microstructure by TEM, and the results reported in the literatures, we show that prototypical relaxor Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) is essentially ferroelectric for T<Tc~225 K. Its anomalous dielectric behavior over a broad temperature range results from the reorientation of domains in the crystal. A physic picture of the structure evolution in relaxor is also revealed. It is found that nanometric ferroelectric domains (gennerally called as polar nano-region (PNR)) interact cooperatively to form mi…
Substrate temperature dependent dielectric and ferroelectric properties of (100) oriented lead-free Na$_{0.4}$K$_{0.1}$Bi$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition
The response of polar nanoregions (PNR) in the relaxor compound Pb[(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)$_{0.92}$Ti$_{0.08}$]O$_3$ subject to a [111]-oriented electric field has been studied by neutron diffuse scattering. Contrary to classical expectations, the diffuse scattering associated with the PNR persists, and is even partially enhanced by field cooling. The effect of the external electric field is retained by the PNR after the field is removed. The ``memory'' of the applied field reappears even after heating the system above $T_C$, and cooling in zero field.
I show that a nonequilibrium paraelectric to ferroelectric transition can be induced using midinfrared pulses. This relies on a quartic $lQ_{\textrm{l$_z$}}^2Q_{\textrm{h$_x$}}^2$ coupling between the lowest ($Q_{\textrm{l$_z$}}$) and highest ($Q_{\textrm{h$_x$}}$) frequency infrared-active phonon modes of a paraelectric material. Density functional calculations show that the coupling constant $l$ is negative, which causes a softening of the $Q_{\textrm{l$_z$}}$ mode when the $Q_{\textrm{h$_x$}}$ mode is externally pumped. A rectification along the $Q_{\textrm{l$_z$}}$ coordinate that stabiliz…
The integration of complex oxides on silicon presents opportunities to extend and enhance silicon technology with novel electronic, magnetic, and photonic properties. Among these materials, barium titanate (BaTiO3) is a particularly strong ferroelectric perovskite oxide with attractive dielectric and electro-optic properties. Here we demonstrate nanophotonic circuits incorporating ferroelectric BaTiO3 thin films on the ubiquitous silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. We grow epitaxial, single-crystalline BaTiO3 directly on SOI and engineer integrated waveguide structures that simultaneously con…
Ferroelectric domain switching in c-axis-oriented epitaxial Pb(Zr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$)O$_3$ thin films was studied using biased scanning probe microscopy tips. While linear and logarithmic dependence of domain size on tip bias and writing time, respectively, are well known, we report an additional linear dependence on relative humidity in the 28-65% range. We map out the switched domain size as a function of both the tip bias and the applied pulse time and describe a growth-limited regime for very short pulses and a nucleation-limited regime for very low tip bias. Using "interrupted-switching" m…

Controlling magnetism using voltage is highly desired for applications, but remains challenging due to fundamental contradiction between polarity and magnetism. Here we propose a mechanism to manipulate magnetic domain walls in ferrimagnetic or ferromagnetic multiferroics using electric field. Different from those studies based on static domain-level couplings, here the magnetoelectric coupling relies on the collaborative spin dynamics around domain walls. Accompanying the reversal of spin chirality driven by polarization switching, a "rolling-downhill"-like motion of domain wall is achieved a…
