This survey article, written for the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, 2nd edition, is devoted to the remarkable family of operators introduced by Charles Dunkl and to their $q$-analogues discovered by Ivan Cherednik. The main focus is on the rôle of these operators in studying integrable many-body systems such as the Calogero-Moser and the Ruijsenaars systems. To put these constructions into a wider context, we indicate their relationship with the theory of the rational Cherednik algebras and double affine Hecke algebras. While we do not include proofs, references to the original research articles are provided, accompanied by brief historical comments.
We prove a number of results on the structure and representation theory of the rational Cherednik algebra of the imprimitive reflection group $G(\ell,p,n)$. In particular, we: (1) show a relationship to the Coulomb branch construction of Braverman, Finkelberg and Nakajima, and 3-dimensional quantum field theory; (2) show that the spherical Cherednik algebra carries the structure of a principal Galois order; (3) construct a graded lift of category $\mathcal{O}$ and the larger category of Dunkl-Opdam modules, whose simple modules have the properties of a dual canonical basis and (4) give the fir…
We establish a direct link between Dunkl operators and quantum Lax matrices $\mathcal L$ for the Calogero--Moser systems associated to an arbitrary Weyl group $W$ (or an arbitrary finite reflection group in the rational case). This interpretation also provides a companion matrix $\mathcal A$ so that $\mathcal L, \mathcal A$ form a quantum Lax pair. Moreover, such an $\mathcal A$ can be associated to any of the higher commuting quantum Hamiltonians of the system, so we obtain a family of quantum Lax pairs. These Lax pairs can be of various sizes, matching the sizes of orbits in the reflection r…
The Dunkl--Dirac symmetry algebra is an associative subalgebra of the tensor product of a Clifford algebra and the faithful polynomial representation of a rational Cherednik algebra. In previous work, the finite-dimensional representations of the Dunkl--Dirac symmetry algebra in three dimensions linked with a dihedral group were given. We give here the necessary results to proceed to the same construction when the Clifford algebra in the tensor product has negative signature.
The Dunkl--Dirac operator is a deformation of the Dirac operator by means of Dunkl derivatives. We investigate the symmetry algebra generated by the elements supercommuting with the Dunkl--Dirac operator and its dual symbol. This symmetry algebra is realised inside the tensor product of a Clifford algebra and a rational Cherednik algebra associated with a reflection group or root system. For reducible root systems of rank three, we determine all the irreducible finite-dimensional representations and conditions for unitarity. Polynomial solutions of the Dunkl--Dirac equation are given as a real…
We realize an extended version of the trigonometric Cherednik algebra as affine Dunkl operators involving Heaviside functions. We use the quadratic Casimir element of the extended trigonometric Cherednik algebra to define an explicit nonstationary Schrödinger equation with delta-potential. We use coordinate Bethe ansatz methods to construct solutions of the nonstationary Schrödinger equation in terms of generalized Bethe wave functions. It is shown that the generalized Bethe wave functions satisfy affine difference Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations in their spectral parameter. The relation to t…
We consider the quantum angular momentum generators, deformed by means of the Dunkl operators. Together with the reflection operators they generate a subalgebra in the rational Cherednik algebra associated with a finite real reflection group. We find all the defining relations of the algebra, which appear to be quadratic, and we show that the algebra is of Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt (PBW) type. We show that this algebra contains the angular part of the Calogero-Moser Hamiltonian and that together with constants it generates the centre of the algebra. We also consider the gl(N) version of the subal…
We initiate the study of an algebra of symmetries for the 3D Dirac-Dunkl operator associated with the Weyl group of the exceptional root system $G_2$. For this symmetry algebra, we give both an abstract definition and an explicit realisation. We then construct ladder operators, using an intermediate result we prove for the Dirac-Dunkl symmetry algebra associated with arbitrary finite reflection group acting on a three-dimensional space.
We consider Dunkl version of Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector associated with a finite Coxeter group $W$ acting geometrically in $\mathbb R^N$ with multiplicity function $g$. This vector generalizes the usual Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector and its components commute with Dunkl-Coulomb Hamiltonian given as Dunkl Laplacian with additional Coulomb potential $γ/r$. We study resulting symmetry algebra $R_{g, γ}(W)$ and show that it has Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt property. In the absence of Coulomb potential this symmetry algebra $R_{g,0}(W)$ is a subalgebra of the rational Cherednik algebra $H_g(W)$. We show that …
The Dunkl operators associated to a necessarily finite Coxeter group acting on a Euclidean space are generalized to any finite group using the techniques of non-commutative geometry, as introduced by the authors to view the usual Dunkl operators as covariant derivatives in a quantum principal bundle with a quantum connection. The definitions of Dunkl operators and their corresponding Dunkl connections are generalized to quantum principal bundles over quantum spaces which possess a classical finite structure group. We introduce cyclic Dunkl connections and their cyclic Dunkl operators. Then we …
We define the Dunkl and Dunkl-Heckman operators in infinite number of variables and use them to construct the quantum integrals of the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland problems at infinity. As a corollary we have a simple proof of integrability of the deformed quantum CMS systems related to classical Lie superalgebras. We show how this naturally leads to a quantum version of the Moser matrix, which in the deformed case was not known before.
The operator that intertwines between the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ - Dunkl operator and the derivative is shown to have a realization in terms of the oscillator operators in one dimension. This observation rests on the fact that the Dunkl intertwining operator maps the Hermite polynomials on the generalized Hermite polynomials.
Firstly we consider a finite dimensional Markov semigroup generated by Dunkl laplacian with drift terms. Using gradient bounds we show that for small coefficients this semigroup has an invariant measure. We then extend this analysis to an infinite dimensional semigroup on $(\mathbb{R}^N)^{\mathbb{Z}^d}$ which we construct using gradient bounds, and finally we study the existence of invariant measures and ergodicity properties.
Following Shastry and Sutherland I construct the super Lax operators for the Calogero model in the oscillator potential. These operators can be used for the derivation of the eigenfunctions and integrals of motion of the Calogero model and its supersymmetric version. They allow to infer several relations involving the Lax matrices for this model in a fast way. It is shown that the super Lax operators for the Calogero and Sutherland models can be expressed in terms of the supercharges and so called local Dunkl operators constructed in our recent paper with M. Ioffe. Several important relations …
The Dunkl-Coulomb system in the plane is considered. The model is defined in terms of the Dunkl Laplacian, which involves reflection operators, with a $r^{-1}$ potential. The system is shown to be maximally superintegrable and exactly solvable. The spectrum of the Hamiltonian is derived algebraically using a realization of $\mathfrak{so}(2,1)$ in terms of Dunkl operators. The symmetry operators generalizing the Runge-Lenz vector are constructed. On eigenspaces of fixed energy, the invariance algebra they generate is seen to correspond to a deformation of $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ by reflections. The …
In this paper, we obtained the Dunkl analogy of classical Lp Hardy inequality for $p > N + 2γ$ with sharp constant $\left(\frac{p-N-2γ}{p}\right)^{p}$, where $2γ$ is the degree of weight function associated with Dunkl operators, and $L^p$ Hardy inequalities with distant function in some G-invariant domains. Moreover we proved two sharp Hardy-Rellich type inequalities for Dunkl operators.
A new family of A_N-type Dunkl operators preserving a polynomial subspace of finite dimension is constructed. Using a general quadratic combination of these operators and the usual Dunkl operators, several new families of exactly and quasi-exactly solvable quantum spin Calogero-Sutherland models are obtained. These include, in particular, three families of quasi-exactly solvable elliptic spin Hamiltonians.
We consider the eigenvalue problem associated with the Dunkl-type differential operator (in which the reflection operator R is involved) L = dx R + v(x), (v(-x) = -v(x)), in the context of supersymmetric quantum mechanical models. By solving this eigenvalue problem with the help of known exactly solvable potentials, we construct several classes of functions satisfying certain orthogonality relations. We call them the Dunkl-supersymmetric (Dunkl-SUSY) orthogonal functions. These functions can be expressed in terms of the classical orthogonal polynomials (COPs). The key feature of these function…
The Dirac-Dunkl operator on the 2-sphere associated to the $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$ reflection group is considered. Its symmetries are found and are shown to generate the Bannai-Ito algebra. Representations of the Bannai-Ito algebra are constructed using ladder operators. Eigenfunctions of the spherical Dirac-Dunkl operator are obtained using a Cauchy-Kovalevskaia extension theorem. These eigenfunctions, which correspond to Dunkl monogenics, are seen to support finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the Bannai-Ito algebra.
We study the thermodynamics of systems based on a Fock space representation inspired by the differential-difference operators proposed in Ref. \cite{Dunkl}. We calculate thermodynamic functions as the entropy and heat capacity and compare them with the standard boson case. A calculation of the second virial coefficient and the scalar curvature in two and three dimensions show that these systems becomes repulsive within an interval of negative values of the reflection operator parameter $μ_0$. In addition, the stability of this system is examined as a function of $μ_0$
A quantum principal bundle is constructed for every Coxeter group acting on a finite-dimensional Euclidean space $E$, and then a connection is also defined on this bundle. The covariant derivatives associated to this connection are the Dunkl operators, originally introduced as part of a program to generalize harmonic analysis in Euclidean spaces. This gives us a new, geometric way of viewing the Dunkl operators. In particular, we present a new proof of the commutativity of these operators among themselves as a consequence of a geometric property, namely, that the connection has curvature zero.
We construct a two-parameter family of actions ω_{k,a} of the Lie algebra sl(2,R) by differential-difference operators on R^N \setminus {0}. Here, k is a multiplicity-function for the Dunkl operators, and a>0 arises from the interpolation of the Weil representation of Mp(N,R) and the minimal unitary representation of O(N+1,2) keeping smaller symmetries. We prove that this action ω_{k,a} lifts to a unitary representation of the universal covering of SL(2,R), and can even be extended to a holomorphic semigroup Ω_{k,a}. In the k\equiv 0 case, our semigroup generalizes the Hermite semigroup studie…
The kernel of the $\mathbb{Z}_2^{n}$ Dirac-Dunkl operator is examined. The symmetry algebra $\mathcal{A}_{n}$ of the associated Dirac-Dunkl equation on $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ is determined and is seen to correspond to a higher rank generalization of the Bannai-Ito algebra. A basis for the polynomial null-solutions of the Dirac-Dunkl operator is constructed. The basis elements are joint eigenfunctions of a maximal commutative subalgebra of $\mathcal{A}_{n}$ and are given explicitly in terms of Jacobi polynomials. The symmetry algebra is shown to act irreducibly on this basis via raising/lowering op…
A supersymmetric extension of the Hahn algebra is introduced. This quadratic superalgebra, which we call the Hahn superalgebra, is constructed using the realization provided by the Dunkl oscillator model in the plane, whose Hamiltonian involves reflection operators. In this realization, the reflections act as grading operators and the odd generators are part of the Schwinger-Dunkl algebra, which is a two-parameter extension of the bosonic su(2) construction. The even part of the algebra is built from bilinears in the odd generators and satisfy the Hahn algebra supplemented with involutions. A …
A discrete parity $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of a two parameter extension of the quantum Rabi model which smoothly interpolates between the latter and the Jaynes-Cummings model, and of the two-photon and the two-mode quantum Rabi models enables their diagonalization in the spin subspace. A more general statement is that the respective sets of $2\times 2$ hermitian operators of the Fulton-Gouterman type and those diagonal in the spin subspace are unitary equivalent. The diagonalized representation makes it transparent that any question about integrability and solvability can be addressed only at t…
A higher rank generalization of the (rank one) Racah algebra is obtained as the symmetry algebra of the Laplace-Dunkl operator associated to the $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$ root system. This algebra is also the invariance algebra of the generic superintegrable model on the $n$-sphere. Bases of Dunkl harmonics are constructed explicitly using a Cauchy-Kovalevskaia theorem. These bases consist of joint eigenfunctions of maximal Abelian subalgebras of the higher rank Racah algebra. A method to obtain expressions for both the connection coefficients between these bases and the action of the symmetries on the…
The infinite number of particles limit in the dual to elliptic Ruijsenaars model (coordinate trigonometric degeneration of quantum double elliptic model) is proposed using the Nazarov-Sklyanin approach. For this purpose we describe double-elliptization of the Cherednik construction. Namely, we derive explicit expression in terms of the Cherednik operators, which reduces to the generating function of Dell commuting Hamiltonians on the space of symmetric functions. Although the double elliptic Cherednik operators do not commute, they can be used for construction of the $N\rightarrow \infty$ limi…
We introduce the so-called Clifford-Hermite polynomials in the framework of Dunkl operators, based on the theory of Clifford analysis. Several properties of these polynomials are obtained, such as a Rodrigues formula, a differential equation and an explicit relation connecting them with the generalized Laguerre polynomials. A link is established with the generalized Hermite polynomials related to the Dunkl operators (see [Rösler M., Comm. Math. Phys. 192 (1998), 519-542, q-alg/9703006]) as well as with the basis of the weighted $L^{2}$ space introduced by Dunkl.
Dunkl processes are generalizations of Brownian motion obtained by using the differential-difference operators known as Dunkl operators as a replacement of spatial partial derivatives in the heat equation. Special cases of these processes include Dyson's Brownian motion model and the Wishart-Laguerre eigenvalue processes, which are well-known in random matrix theory. It is known that the dynamics of Dunkl processes is obtained by transforming the heat kernel using Dunkl's intertwining operator. It is also known that, under an appropriate scaling, their distribution function converges to a stea…
We consider a one-dimensional system of Brownian particles that repel each other through a logarithmic potential. We study two formulations for the system and the relation between them. The first, Dyson's Brownian motion model, has an interaction coupling constant determined by the parameter beta > 0. When beta = 1,2 and 4, this model can be regarded as a stochastic realization of the eigenvalue statistics of Gaussian random matrices. The second system comes from Dunkl processes, which are defined using differential-difference operators (Dunkl operators) associated with finite abstract vector …
We construct several new families of exactly and quasi-exactly solvable BC_N-type Calogero-Sutherland models with internal degrees of freedom. Our approach is based on the introduction of two new families of Dunkl operators of B_N type which, together with the original B_N-type Dunkl operators, are shown to preserve certain polynomial subspaces of finite dimension. We prove that a wide class of quadratic combinations involving these three sets of Dunkl operators always yields a spin Calogero-Sutherland model, which is (quasi-)exactly solvable by construction. We show that all the spin Calogero…
We consider the symmetry algebra generated by the total angular momentum operators, appearing as constants of motion of the $\mathrm{S}_3$ Dunkl Dirac equation. The latter is a deformation of the Dirac equation by means of Dunkl operators, in our case associated to the root system $A_2$, with corresponding Weyl group $\mathrm{S}_3$, the symmetric group on three elements. The explicit form of the symmetry algebra in this case is a one-parameter deformation of the classical total angular momentum algebra $\mathfrak{so}(3)$, incorporating elements of $\mathrm{S}_3$. This was obtained using recent…
