Data-driven RANS modeling is emerging as a promising methodology to exploit the information provided by high-fidelity data. However, its widespread application is limited by challenges in generalization and robustness to inconsistencies between input data of varying fidelity levels. This is especially true for thermal turbulent closures, which inherently depend on momentum statistics provided by low or high fidelity turbulence momentum models. This work investigates the impact of momentum modeling inconsistencies on a data-driven thermal closure trained with a dataset with multiple fidelity (DNS and RANS). The analysis of the model inputs shows that the two fidelity levels correspond to separate regions in the input space. It is here shown that such separation can be exploited by a training with heterogeneous data, allowing the model to detect the level of fidelity in its inputs and adjust its prediction accordingly. In particular, a sensitivity analysis and verification shows that such a model can leverage the data inconsistencies to increase its robustness. Finally, the verification with a CFD simulation shows the potential of this multi-fidelity training approach for flows in which momentum statistics provided by traditional models are affected by model uncertainties.
We develop a high-fidelity numerical solver for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with the main aim of highlighting the predictive capabilities of low-diffusive numerics for flows in complex geometries. The space discretization of the convective terms in the Navier-Stokes equations relies on a robust energy-preserving numerical flux, and numerical diffusion inherited from the AUSM scheme is added limited to the vicinity of shock waves, or wherever spurious numerical oscillations are sensed. The solver is capable of conserving the total kinetic energy in the inviscid limit, and it bears…
This letter confirms the existence of heat transfer enhancement (HTE) and reduction (HTR) in turbulent natural convection with polymer additives. HTE and HTR were numerically predicted by Benzi et al.(PRL, 104, 024502, 2010) in homogenous turbulent convection, but experiments by Ahlers & Nikolaenko(PRL, 104, 034503, 2010) in turbulent natural convection observed HTR only. Using direct numerical simulation of natural convection, the present study reconciles earlier numerical and experimental work on the basis of the dominant role of polymer length in the polymer dynamics in extensional flows.
In recent years, scale-by-scale energy transport in wall turbulence has been intensively studied, and the complex spatial and interscale transfer of turbulent energy has been investigated. As the enhancement of heat transfer is one of the most important aspects of turbulence from an engineering perspective, it is also important to study how turbulent heat fluxes are transported in space and in scale by nonlinear multi-scale interactions in wall turbulence as well as turbulent energy. In the present study, the spectral transport budgets of turbulent heat fluxes are investigated based on direct …
Measurements of heat transport, as expressed by the Nusselt number $Nu$, are reported for turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection of water containing up to 120 ppm by weight of poly-[ethylene oxide] with a molecular weight of $4\times10^6$ g/mole. Over the Rayleigh number range $ 5\times 10^9 \alt Ra \alt 7 \times 10^{10}$ $Nu$ is smaller than it is for pure water by up to 10%.
In this study, a deep learning-based approach is applied with the aim of reconstructing high-resolution turbulent flow fields using minimal flow fields data. A multi-scale enhanced super-resolution generative adversarial network with a physics-based loss function is introduced as a model to reconstruct the high-resolution flow fields. The model capability to reconstruct high-resolution laminar flows is examined using data of laminar flow around a square cylinder. The results reveal that the model can accurately reproduce the high-resolution flow fields even when limited spatial information is …
Experimental and numerical data for the heat transfer as a function of the Rayleigh-, Prandtl-, and Rossby numbers in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection are presented. For relatively small $Ra ~ 10^8$ and large Pr modest rotation can enhance the heat transfer by up to 30%. At larger Ra there is less heat-transfer enhancement, and at small Pr = 0.7. there is no heat-transfer enhancement at all. We suggest that the small-Pr behavior is due to the breakdown of the heat-transfer-enhancing Ekman pumping because of larger thermal diffusion.
Nonlinear interaction between different scales in turbulence results in both interscale and spatial transport of turbulent energy, and the role of such scale interactions in turbulent heat transfer mechanism is also of practical importance from the engineering viewpoint. In the present study, we investigate a turbulent plane Couette flow with passive-scalar heat transfer at the Prandtl number 0.71, in order to address the similarity/difference between the scale interactions in the velocity and temperature fields. The constant-temperature-difference boundary condition is used so that the mean v…
Heat transport in turbulent thermal convection increases with the thermal forcing, but in almost all studies the rate of this increase is slower than it would be if transport became independent of the molecular diffusivities -- the heat transport scaling is slower than the mixing-length (or `ultimate') scaling. In configurations driven by either thermal boundary conditions or internal heating, thermal boundary layers instead lead to a boundary-limited (or `classical') scaling. With net-zero internal heating and cooling in different regions, mixing-length scaling can occur because heat need not…
Turbulent thermal convection is characterized by the formation of large-scale structures and strong spatial inhomogeneity. This work addresses the relative heat transport contributions of the large-scale plume ejecting versus plume impacting zones in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection. Based on direct numerical simulations of the two dimensional (2-D) problem, we show the existence of a crossover in the wall heat transport from initially impacting dominated to ultimately ejecting dominated at a Rayleigh number of $Ra\approx 3 \times 10^{11}$. This is consistent with the trends observed in 3-…
Liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) can reduce friction drag in both laminar and turbulent flows. However, the heat transfer properties of such multi-phase surfaces have still not been investigated to a large extent. We use numerical simulations to study conjugate heat transfer of liquid-filled grooves. It is shown that heat transfer can increase for both laminar and turbulent liquid flows due to recirculation in the surface texture. For the increase to be substantial, the thermal conductivity of the solid must be similar to the thermal conductivity of the fluids, and the recirculation in the groove…
Many natural and technical processes deal with the turbulent mixing and heat transfer in the jet of mutually immiscible liquids, which represent an important class of the modern multiphase systems dynamics. The differential equations for axisymmetrical two-dimensional stationary flow and the integral correlations in a cylindrical coordinate system are considered for the free and confined jets. The parameters of the turbulent mixing in a free jet and in two-phase flow in a chamber are modelled and analyzed. One example is also done for high-temperature flow of the liquid metal melt cooled by wa…
This study investigates the effects of curvature on the local heat release rate and mixture fraction during turbulent flame-wall interaction of a lean dimethyl ether/air flame using a fully resolved simulation with a reduced skeletal chemical reaction mechanism and mixture-averaged transport. The region in which turbulent flame-wall interaction affects the flame is found to be restricted to a wall distance less than twice the laminar flame thickness. In regions without heat losses, heat release rate and curvature, as well as mixture fraction and curvature, are negatively correlated, which is i…
This paper discusses a modified penetration theory where the time scale for the momentum wall layer is based on the onset of ejections from the wall but the time scale for the thermal layer is based on the unsteady state diffusion of heat from the wall into the streamwise flow, not the renewal of heat from eddies penetrating the wall layer. A method for the determination of the thickness of the thermal wall layer has been developed. The theory correlates adequately experimental data for both the thickness of the thermal wall layer and the Nusselt number. Key words: Heat transfer, penetration t…
The aspect ratio (Γ) dependence of the heat transfer (Nusselt number Nu in dimensionless form) in turbulent (two-dimensional) Rayleigh-Bénard convection is numerically studied in the regime $0.4 \le Γ\le 1.25$ for Rayleigh numbers $10^7 \le Ra \le Ra^{9}$ and Prandtl numbers Pr =0.7 (gas) and 4.3 (water). Nu (Γ) shows a very rich structure with sudden jumps and sharp transitions. We connect these structures to the way the flow organizes itself in the sample and explain why the aspect ratio dependence of Nu is more pronounced for small Pr. Even for fixed Γdifferent turbulent states (with differ…
Direct numerical simulation of a turbulent channel flow with heat transfer was performed at very low Reynolds numbers. Two different thermal boundary conditions were studied, and temperature was considered as a passive scalar. The computations were carried out with huge computational boxes (up to 327.7 x 2 x 128 in the streamwise, wall-normal, and spanwise directions, respectively). The emphases of this paper are to investigate the large-scale structure (puff) in the intermittent-turbulent flow including the scalar fields and to provide the values of the transitional and critical Reynolds numb…
Direct numerical simulations of turbulent heat transfer in fully-developed channel flows have been performed in a range of friction Reynolds number between 60 and 180, based on the friction velocity and the channel half width $δ$, with emphasis on a puff-like structure, large-scale spatial intermittency. For the Reynolds numbers lower than 80 with a large computational domain of 51.2 x 2 x 22.5, the turbulent puff was observed and its significant influences on the momentum and heat transports were found. The spatial structure of the equilibrium puff, or the localized turbulence, was examined w…
The heat transport and corresponding changes in the large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection are studied by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations as a function of the aspect ratio $Γ$ of a closed cylindrical cell and the Rayleigh number $Ra$. For small and moderate aspect ratios, the global heat transfer law $Nu=A\times Ra^β$ shows a power law dependence of both fit coefficients $A$ and $β$ on the aspect ratio. A minimum Nusselt number coincides with the point where the LSC undergoes a transition from a single-roll to a double-roll pattern. With i…
In this study we report numerical results of turbulent transport of heat $Nu$ and angular momentum $ν_{t}/ν$ in Taylor-Couette (TC) flows subjected to a radial temperature gradient. Direct numerical simulations are performed in a TC cell with a radius ratio $η=0.5$ and an aspect ratio $Γ=8$ for two Rayleigh numbers ($Ra=10^5$, $10^6$) and two Prandtl numbers ($Pr=0.7$, $4.38$), while the Reynolds number $Re$ varies in the range of $0 \le Re \le 15000$. With increasing $Re$, the flows undergo two distinct transitions: the first transition being from the convection-dominated regime to the transi…
We study turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection over four decades of Rayleigh numbers 4E8 < Ra < 2E12, while harmonically modulating the temperatures of the plates of our cylindrical cell. We probe the flow by temperature sensors placed in the cell interior and embedded in the highly conducting copper plates and detect thermal waves propagating at modulation frequency in the bulk of the convective flow. We confirm the recent numerical prediction [PRL 125, 154502 (2020)] of the significant enhancement of Nusselt number and report its dependence on the frequency and amplitude of the temperature mo…
By tailoring the geometry of the upper boundary in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection we manipulate the boundary layer -- interior flow interaction, and examine the heat transport using the Lattice Boltzmann method. For fixed amplitude and varying boundary wavelength $λ$, we find that the exponent $β$ in the Nusselt-Rayleigh scaling relation, $Nu-1 \propto Ra^β$, is maximized at $λ\equiv λ_{\text{max}} \approx (2 π)^{-1}$, but decays to the planar value in both the large ($λ\gg λ_{\text{max}}$) and small ($λ\ll λ_{\text{max}}$) wavelength limits. The changes in the exponent originate in the …
In computational fluid dynamics, there is an inevitable trade off between accuracy and computational cost. In this work, a novel multi-fidelity deep generative model is introduced for the surrogate modeling of high-fidelity turbulent flow fields given the solution of a computationally inexpensive but inaccurate low-fidelity solver. The resulting surrogate is able to generate physically accurate turbulent realizations at a computational cost magnitudes lower than that of a high-fidelity simulation. The deep generative model developed is a conditional invertible neural network, built with normal…
In this study, we performed highly resolved large-eddy simulations (LES) to investigate the influence of variable properties on the forced turbulent convection in a channel. The constant heat flux boundary condition permits wall temperature fluctuations and thus induces variations of fluid properties. Since the effect of viscosity on the flow exhibits $Re_τ^{-1}$ scaling, we only considered $Re_τ= 180$ in the present study. Compared to the flow with constant properties, results indicate that the variable properties have trivial effects on the mean velocity and temperature profiles, Reynolds sh…
In this paper, several exact expressions for the mean heat flux at the wall ($q_w$) for the compressible turbulent channel flows are derived by using the internal energy equation or the total energy equation. Two different routes, including the FIK method and the RD method, can be applied. The direct numerical simulations data of compressible channel flows at different Reynolds and Mach numbers verify the correctness of the derived formulas. Discussions related to the different energy equations, and different routes are carried out, and we may arrive at the conclusion that most of the formulas…
A new vertical water tunnel with global temperature control and the possibility for bubble and local heat & mass injection has been designed and constructed. The new facility offers the possibility to accurately study heat and mass transfer in turbulent multiphase flow (gas volume fraction up to $8\%$) with a Reynolds-number range from $1.5 \times 10^4$ to $3 \times 10^5$ in the case of water at room temperature. The tunnel is made of high-grade stainless steel permitting the use of salt solutions in excess of 15$\%$ mass fraction. The tunnel has a volume of 300 liters. The tunnel has three in…
Weakly-rotating turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection was studied experimentally and numerically. With increasing rotation and large enough Rayleigh number an abrupt transition from a turbulent state with nearly rotation-independent heat transport to another turbulent state with enhanced heat transfer is observed at a critical inverse Rossby number $1/Ro_c \simeq 0.4$. Whereas for $1/Ro < 1/Ro_c$ the strength of the large-scale convection-roll is either enhanced or essentially unmodified depending on parameters, its strength is increasingly diminished beyond $1/Ro_c$ where it competes with Ekma…
We present high-resolution numerical investigations of heat transport by two-dimensional (2D) turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection over the Rayleigh number range $10^8 \leqslant Ra\leqslant 10^{10}$ and the Prandtl number range $0.7\leqslant Pr \leqslant10$. We find that there exist strong counter-gradient local heat flux with magnitude much larger than the global Nusselt number $Nu$ of the system. Two mechanisms for generating counter-gradient heat transport are identified: one is due to the bulk dynamics and the other is due to the competitions between the corner-flow rolls and the larg…
Heat and momentum transfer in wall-bounded turbulent flow, coupled with the effects of wall-roughness, is one of the outstanding questions in turbulence research. In the standard Rayleigh-Bénard problem for natural thermal convection, it is notoriously difficult to reach the so-called ultimate regime in which the near-wall boundary layers are turbulent. Following the analyses proposed by Kraichnan [Phys. Fluids vol 5., pp. 1374-1389 (1962)] and Grossmann & Lohse [Phys. Fluids vol. 23, pp. 045108 (2011)], we instead utilize recent direct numerical simulations of forced convection over a rough w…
Direct numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the effect of the wall temperature on the behavior of oblique shock-wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions at freestream Mach number $2.28$ and shock angle of the wedge generator $φ= 8^{\circ}$. Five values of the wall-to-recovery-temperature ratio ($T_w/T_r$) are considered, corresponding to cold, adiabatic and hot wall thermal conditions. We show that the main effect of cooling is to decrease the characteristic scales of the interaction in terms of upstream influence and extent of the separation bubble. The opposite behavior is …
The transition to a new turbulent regime in horizontal convection in the case of low Prandtl numbers is analyzed using the Shishkina, Grossmann & Lohse (SGL) theory. The flow driven by the horizontal gradient along a horizontal surface, perpendicular to the acceleration of gravity is shown to transition to turbulence in the plume and the core. This transition to turbulence sets a sequence of heat transfer and momentum transport scalings which are found to follow the SGL prediction for the scaling factors and the prediction of Hughes, Griffith & Mullarney (HGM) for larger forcing amplitudes. Th…
In heat transfer augmenting methods such as radial fins, the heat transfer enhancement commonly leads to the drag force increment. In the present paper, slots are inserted over the fins to simultaneously reduce the drag coefficient. Turbulent convection heat transfer around a cylinder, as well as oscillating bundle of tubes including the slotted radial fins have been investigated. The governing equations are solved in two-dimension utilizing OpenFOAM software based on k-ω SST closure model. The cases with various slot location, slot width, the number of the slots, the fin height, and oscillati…
Rayleigh--Bénard convection, which is the buoyancy-induced motion of a fluid enclosed between two horizontal plates, is an idealised setup to study thermal convection. We analyse the modes that transport the most heat between the plates by computing the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of numerical data. Instead of the usual POD ansatz of finding modes that describe the energy best, we propose a method that is optimal in describing the heat transport. Thereby, we can determine the modes with the major influence on the heat transport and the coherent structures in the convection cell. We a…
New insight into the contribution of the microscale vortex evolution towards convection heat transfer in porous media is presented in this paper. The objective is to determine how the microscale vortices influence convection heat transfer in turbulent flow inside porous media. The microscale temperature distribution is analyzed using flow visualization in 2D using streamlines and in 3D using Q structures. The pertinent observations are supplemented with the comparison of surface skin friction and heat transfer using: (1) surface skin friction lines and (2) joint PDF of pressure and skin fricti…
Spatial regions that do not mix effectively with their surroundings and thus contribute less to the heat transport in fully turbulent three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard flows are identified by Lagrangian trajectories that stay together for a longer time. These trajectories probe Lagrangian coherent sets (CS) which we investigate here in direct numerical simulations in convection cells with square cross section of aspect ratio $Γ= 16$, Rayleigh number $Ra = 10^{5}$, and Prandtl numbers $Pr = 0.1, 0.7$ and $7$. The analysis is based on $N=524,288$ Lagrangian tracer particles which are advected in…
We study the melting dynamics of large ice balls in a turbulent von Karman flow at very high Reynolds number. Using an optical shadowgraphy setup, we record the time evolution of particle sizes. We study the heat transfer as a function of the particle scale Reynolds number for three cases: fixed ice balls melting in a region of strong turbulence with zero mean flow, fixed ice balls melting under the action of a strong mean flow with lower fluctuations, and ice balls freely advected in the whole flow. For the fixed particles cases, heat transfer is observed to be much stronger than in laminar f…
The generation mechanism of wall heat flux is one of the fundamental problems in supersonic/hypersonic turbulent boundary layers. A novel heat decomposition formula under the curvilinear coordinate was proposed in this paper. The new formula has wider application scope and can be applied in the configurations with grid deformed. The wall heat flux of an interaction between shock wave and the turbulent boundary layer over a compression corner is analyzed by the new formula. The results indicated good performance of the formula in the complex interaction region. The contributions of different en…
The convective heat transfer enhancement in a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) employing a pulsed, slot jet in crossflow is investigated experimentally. A parametric study on actuation frequencies and duty cycles is performed. The actuator is a flush-mounted slot jet that injects fluid into a well-behaved zero-pressure-gradient TBL over a flat plate. A heated-thin-foil sensor measures the time-averaged convective heat transfer coefficient downstream of the actuator location and the flow field is characterised by means of Particle Image Velocimetry. The results show that both the jet penetration …
We conduct laboratory experiments on the time evolution of an ice layer cooled from below and subjected to a turbulent shear flow of warm water from above. Our study is motivated by observations of warm water intrusion into the ocean cavity under Antarctic ice shelves, accelerating the melting of their basal surfaces. The strength of the applied turbulent shear flow in our experiments is represented in terms of its Reynolds number $\textit{Re}$, which is varied over the range $2.0\times10^3 \le \textit{Re} \le 1.0\times10^4$. Depending on the water temperature, partial transient melting of the…
Heavy inertial particles transported by a turbulent flow are shown to concentrate in the regions where an advected passive scalar, such as temperature, displays very strong front-like discontinuities. This novel effect is responsible for extremely high levels of fluctuations for the passive field sampled by the particles that impacts the heat fluxes exchanged between the particles and the surrounding fluid. Instantaneous and averaged heat fluxes are shown to follow strongly intermittent statistics and anomalous scaling laws.
We report experimental results for heat-transport measurements, in the form of the Nusselt number \Nu, by turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 0.50$ ($D = 1.12$ m is the diameter and $L = 2.24$ m the height). The measurements were made using sulfur hexafluoride at pressures up to 19 bars as the fluid. They are for the Rayleigh-number range $3\times 10^{12} \alt \Ra \alt 10^{15}$ and for Prandtl numbers \Pra\ between 0.79 and 0.86. For $\Ra < \Ra^*_1 \simeq 1.4\times 10^{13}$ we find $\Nu = N_0 \Ra^{γ_{eff}}$ with $γ_{eff} = 0.312 \pm 0.002…
