In this paper, several exact expressions for the mean heat flux at the wall ($q_w$) for the compressible turbulent channel flows are derived by using the internal energy equation or the total energy equation. Two different routes, including the FIK method and the RD method, can be applied. The direct numerical simulations data of compressible channel flows at different Reynolds and Mach numbers verify the correctness of the derived formulas. Discussions related to the different energy equations, and different routes are carried out, and we may arrive at the conclusion that most of the formulas derived in the present work are just mathematically ones which generally are lack of clear physical interpretation. They can be used to estimate $q_w$, but might not be suitable for explore the underlying physics.
We investigate the fluctuations of thermodynamic state-variables in compressible aerodynamic wall-turbulence, using results of direct numerical simulation (DNS) of compressible turbulent plane channel flow. The basic transport equations governing the behaviour of thermodynamic variables (density, pressure, temperature and entropy) are reviewed and used to derive the exact transport equations for the variances and fluxes (transport by the fluctuating velocity field) of the thermodynamic fluctuations. The scaling with Reynolds and Mach number of compressible turbulent plane channel flow is discu…
The direct numerical simulation of compressible fully developed turbulent Couette flow between two parallel plates with equal temperatures moving in opposite directions with some velocity was performed. The algorithm was tested on well known numerical solution for incompressible Poiseuille channel flow and found to provide its well description. The slip effects in studied flow are found to be negligibly small at the values of accommodation coefficients for velocity and temperature of the order of unity. The considerable increase of mean temperature with decreasing the accommodation coefficient…
In this paper, a high-order gas-kinetic scheme in general curvilinear coordinate (HGKS-cur) is developed for the numerical simulation of compressible turbulence. Based on the coordinate transformation, the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) equation is transformed from physical space to computational space. To deal with the general mesh given by discretized points, the geometrical metrics need to be constructed by the dimension-by-dimension Lagrangian interpolation. The multidimensional weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) reconstruction is adopted in the computational domain for spatial accur…
Nonpremixed turbulent reacting flows are intrinsically difficult to model due to the strong coupling between turbulent motions and reaction. The large amount of heat released by a typical hydrocarbon flame leads to significant modifications of the thermodynamic variables and the molecular transport coefficients and thus alters the fluid dynamics. Additionally, in nonpremixed combustion, the flame has a complex spatial structure. Localized expansions and contractions occur, enhancing the dilatational motions. Therefore, the compressibility of the flow and the heat release are intimately related…
We develop a high-fidelity numerical solver for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with the main aim of highlighting the predictive capabilities of low-diffusive numerics for flows in complex geometries. The space discretization of the convective terms in the Navier-Stokes equations relies on a robust energy-preserving numerical flux, and numerical diffusion inherited from the AUSM scheme is added limited to the vicinity of shock waves, or wherever spurious numerical oscillations are sensed. The solver is capable of conserving the total kinetic energy in the inviscid limit, and it bears…
Floating particles that are initially distributed uniformly on the surface of a turbulent fluid, subsequently coagulate, until finally a steady state is reached. This being so, they manifestly form a compressible system. In this experiment, the information dimension D_1, and the Lyapunov exponents of the coagulated floaters, are measured. The trajectories and the velocity fields of the particles are captured in a sequence of rapidly acquired images. Then the velocity sequence is randomly shuffled in time to generate new trajectories. This analysis mimics the Kraichnan ensemble and yields prope…
Scale-space energy density function, $E(\mathbf{x}, \mathbf{r})$, is defined as the derivative of the two-point velocity correlation. The function E describes the turbulent kinetic energy density of scale r at a location x and can be considered as the generalization of spectral energy density function concept to inhomogeneous flows. We derive the transport equation for the scale-space energy density function in compressible flows to develop a better understanding of scale-to-scale energy transfer and the degree of non-locality of the energy interactions. Specifically, the effects of variable-d…
In this work, a transformation, which maps the mean velocity profiles of compressible wall-bounded turbulent flows to the incompressible law of the wall is proposed. Unlike existing approaches, the proposed transformation successfully collapses, without specific tuning, numerical simulation data from fully developed channel and pipe flows, and boundary layers with or without heat transfer. In all these cases, the transformation is successful across the entire inner layer of the boundary layer (including the viscous sublayer, buffer layer, and logarithmic layer), recovers the asymptotically exa…
A general Reynolds analogy (GRA) theory is proposed for the mean and fluctuating velocity and temperature in compressible wall-bounded turbulent flows. In particular, an exact analogy solution is derived for compressible turbulent pipe and channel flows and an approximate analogy solution is derived for compressible turbulent boundary layers (CTBL), both of which are independent of fluid Prandtl number and wall temperature condition. The analogy solutions are in excellent agreement with direct numerical simulation data, able to reproduce empirical relations, and can be viewed as extensions of …
Both compressible and incompressible Navier-Stokes solvers can be used and are used to solve incompressible turbulent flow problems. In the compressible case, the Mach number is then considered as a solver parameter that is set to a small value, $\mathrm{M}\approx 0.1$, in order to mimic incompressible flows. This strategy is widely used for high-order discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The present work raises the question regarding the computational efficiency of compressible DG solvers as compared to a genuinely incompressible formulation. Our…
We have investigated the effects of permeable walls, modeled by linear acoustic impedance with zero reactance, on compressible channel flow via linear stability analysis (LSA). Base flow profiles are taken from impermeable isothermal-wall laminar and turbulent channel flow simulations at bulk Reynolds number, $Re_b$= 6900 and Mach numbers, $M_b$ = 0.2, 0.5, 0.85. For a sufficiently high value of permeability, Two dominant modes are made unstable: a bulk pressure mode, causing symmetric expulsion and suction of mass from the porous walls (Mode 0); a standing-wave-like mode, with a pressure node…
The direct numerical simulation (DNS) of compressible isotropic turbulence up to the supersonic regime $Ma_{t} = 1.2$ has been investigated by high-order gas-kinetic scheme (HGKS) [{\it{Computers}} \& {\it{Fluids, 192, 2019}}]. In this study, the coarse-grained analysis of subgrid-scale (SGS) turbulent kinetic energy $K_{sgs}$ budget is fully analyzed for constructing one-equation SGS model in the compressible large eddy simulation (LES). The DNS on a much higher turbulent Mach number up to $Ma_{t} = 2.0$ has been obtained by HGKS, which confirms the super robustness of HGKS. Then, the exact c…
This paper presents a method for calculating the wall shear rate in pipe turbulent flow. It collapses adequately the data measured in laminar flow and turbulent flow into a single flow curve and gives the basis for the design of turbulent flow viscometers. Key words: non-Newtonian, wall shear rate, turbulent, rheometer
A new methodology based on energy flux similarity is suggested in this paper for large eddy simulation (LES) of transitional and turbulent flows. Existing knowledge reveals that the energy cascade generally exists in transitional and turbulent flows with different distributions, and the characteristic quantity of scale interaction in energy cascade processes is energy flux. Therefore, energy flux similarity is selected as the basic criterion to secure the flow field getting from LES highly similar to the real flow field. Through a priori tests, we find that the energy flux from the tensor-diff…
Non-linear entropy stability and a summation-by-parts framework are used to derive entropy stable wall boundary conditions for the three-dimensional compressible Navier--Stokes equations. A semi-discrete entropy estimate for the entire domain is achieved when the new boundary conditions are coupled with an entropy stable discrete interior operator. The data at the boundary are weakly imposed using a penalty flux approach and a simultaneous-approximation-term penalty technique. Although discontinuous spectral collocation operators on unstructured grids are used herein for the purpose of demonst…
We investigate diffusion in supersonic, turbulent, compressible flows. Supersonic turbulence can be characterized as network of interacting shocks. We consider flows with different rms Mach numbers and where energy necessary to maintain dynamical equilibrium is inserted at different spatial scales. We find that turbulent transport exhibits super-diffusive behavior due to induced bulk motions. In a comoving reference frame, however, diffusion behaves normal and can be described by mixing length theory extended into the supersonic regime.
Understanding the generation mechanism of the heating flux is essential for the design of hypersonic vehicles. We proposed a novel formula to decompose the heat flux coefficient into the contributions of different terms by integrating the conservative equation of the total energy. The reliability of the formula is well demonstrated by the direct numerical simulation results of a hypersonic transitional boundary layer. Through this formula, the exact process of the energy transport in the boundary layer can be explained and the dominant contributors to the heat flux can be explored, which are b…
We performed high resolution numerical simulations of homogenous and isotropic compressible turbulence, with an average 3D Mach number close to 0.3. We study the statistical properties of intermittency for velocity, density and entropy. For the velocity field, which is the primary quantity that can be compared to the isotropic incompressible case, we find no statistical differences in its behavior in the inertial range due either to the slight compressibility or to the different dissipative mechanism. For the density field, we find evidence of ``front-like'' structures, although no shocks are …
We study the laminar and turbulent channel flow over a viscous hyper-elastic wall and show that it is possible to sustain an unsteady chaotic turbulent-like flow at any Reynolds number by properly choosing the wall elastic modulus. We propose a physical explanation for this effect by evaluating the shear stress and the turbulent kinetic energy budget in the fluid and elastic layer. We vary the bulk Reynolds number from 2800 to 10 and identify two distinct mechanisms for turbulence production. At moderate and high Reynolds numbers, turbulent fluctuations activate the wall oscillations, which, i…
We consider the model of a transverse vector (e.g. magnetic) field with the most general form of the nonlinearity, known as the ${\cal A}$ model, passively advected by a strongly compressible turbulent flow, governed by the randomly stirred Navier-Stokes equation. The full stochastic problem is equivalent to a certain renormalizable field theoretic model with an infrared attractive fixed point. Thus, the scaling behaviour for the large-scale, long-distance behaviour is established. However, the question whether the parameter ${\cal A}$ tends to a certain fixed-point value of the renormalizatio…
Scaling of turbulent wall-bounded flows is revealed in the gradient structures, for each of the Reynolds stress components. Within the dissipation structure, an asymmetrical order exists, that we can deploy to unify the scaling and transport dynamics within and across these flows. There are subtle differences in the outer boundary conditions between channel and flat-plate boundary-layer flows, which modify the turbulence structure far from the wall. The self-similarity exhibited in the dissipation structures and corresponding transport dynamics establish capabilities and encompassing knowledge…
The present work demonstrates the use of resolvent analysis to obtain physical insights for open-cavity flows. Resolvent analysis identifies the flow response to harmonic forcing, given a steady base state, in terms of the response and forcing modes and the amplification gain. The response and forcing modes reveal the spatial structures associated with this amplification process. In this study, we perform resolvent analysis on both laminar and turbulent flows over a rectangular cavity with length-to-depth ratio of $L/D=6$ at a free stream Mach number of $M_\infty=0.6$ in a spanwise periodic se…
In this work, a discontinuous Galerkin scheme is employed to perform LES simulations of supersonic jet flows. A total of four simulations are performed with different meshes and order of accuracy. The number of degrees of freedom from the simulations varies from 50 x 106 to 400 x 106. The results indicate that by increasing the resolution of simulation, in general, the results got closer to experimental data. The jet lipline is the only region in which this behavior is not observed. It investigated a procedure of using lower-order simulations to initialize high-order simulations and consequent…
We investigated the effects of Schmidt number on passive scalar transport in forced compressible turbulence. In the inertial-convective range the scalar spectrum followed the k^{-5/3} power law. For Sc >> 1, there appeared a k^{-1} power law in the viscous-convective range, while for Sc << 1, a k^{-17/3} power law was identified in the inertial-diffusive range. The scaling constant for the mixed third-order structure function of velocity-scalar increment grew over Sc, and the effect of compressibility made it smaller than the classical 4/3 value. At small amplitudes, the PDF of scalar fluctuat…
Turbulent mixing is studied in the Lagrangian framework with an approach based on the complex network formalism. We consider the motion of passive, noninertial particles inside a turbulent channel simulated at $Re_τ = 950$. The time-dependent network is built to evaluate the transfer of tracers between thin wall-parallel layers which partition the channel in the wall-normal direction. By doing so, we are able to assess the spatial and temporal complexities arising from turbulence dynamics and their influence on the mixing process. This approach highlights the effects of small-scale features of…
Steady forcing at the wall of a channel flow is studied via DNS to assess its ability of yielding reductions of turbulent friction drag. The wall forcing consists of a stationary distribution of spanwise velocity that alternates in the streamwise direction. The idea behind the forcing builds upon the existing technique of the spanwise wall oscillation, and exploits the convective nature of the flow to achieve an unsteady interaction with turbulence. The analysis takes advantage of the equivalent laminar flow, that is solved analytically to show that the energetic cost of the forcing is unaffec…
This study investigates the effects of curvature on the local heat release rate and mixture fraction during turbulent flame-wall interaction of a lean dimethyl ether/air flame using a fully resolved simulation with a reduced skeletal chemical reaction mechanism and mixture-averaged transport. The region in which turbulent flame-wall interaction affects the flame is found to be restricted to a wall distance less than twice the laminar flame thickness. In regions without heat losses, heat release rate and curvature, as well as mixture fraction and curvature, are negatively correlated, which is i…
We present STREAmS, an in-house high-fidelity solver for large-scale, massively parallel direct numerical simulations (DNS) of compressible turbulent flows on graphical processing units (GPUs). STREAmS is written in the Fortran 90 language and it is tailored to carry out DNS of canonical compressible wall-bounded flows, namely turbulent plane channel, zero-pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer and supersonic oblique shock-wave/boundary layer interactions. The solver incorporates state-of-the-art numerical algorithms, specifically designed to cope with the challenging problems associated w…
In this work, direct numerical simulations of the compressible fluid equations in turbulent regimes are performed. The behavior of the flow is either dominated by purely turbulent phenomena or by the generation of sound waves in it. Previous studies suggest that three different types of turbulence may happen at the low Mach number limit in polytropic flows: Nearly incompressible (NI), modally equipartitioned compressible (MEC) and compressible wave (CW). The distinction between these types of turbulence is investigated here applying different kinds of forcing. Scaling of density fluctuations w…
This paper proposes a simple new closure principle for turbulent shear flows. The turbulent flow field is divided into an outer and an inner region. The inner region is made up of a log-law region and a wall layer. The wall layer is viewed in terms of the well known inrush-sweep-burst sequence observed since 1967. It is modelled as a transient laminar sub-boundary layer, which obeys the Stokes solution for an impulsively started flat plate. The wall layer may also be modelled with a steady state solution by adding a damping function to the log-law. Closure is achieved by matching the unsteady …
In this study, the thermochemical state during turbulent flame-wall interaction of a stoichiometric methane-air flame is investigated using a fully resolved simulation with detailed chemistry. The turbulent side-wall quenching flame shows both head-on quenching and side-wall quenching-like behavior that significantly affects the CO formation in the near-wall region. The detailed insights from the simulation are used to evaluate a recently proposed flame (tip) vortex interaction mechanism identified from experiments on turbulent side-wall quenching. It describes the entrainment of burnt gases i…
The results of a comparative analysis based upon a Karhunen-Loève expansion of turbulent pipe flow and drag reduced turbulent pipe flow by spanwise wall oscillation are presented. The turbulent flow is generated by a direct numerical simulation at a Reynolds number $Re_τ= 150$. The spanwise wall oscillation is imposed as a velocity boundary condition with an amplitude of $A^+ = 20$ and a period of $T^+ = 50$. The wall oscillation results in a 27% mean velocity increase when the flow is driven by a constant pressure gradient. The peaks of the Reynolds stress and root-mean-squared velocities shi…
The aim of this study is to improve the prediction of near-wall mean streamwise velocity profile $U^+$ by using a simple method. The $U^+$ profile is obtained by solving the momentum equation which is written as an ordinary differential equation. An eddy viscosity formulation based on a near-wall turbulent kinetic energy $k^+$ function (R. Absi, Analytical solutions for the modeled $k$-equation, ASME J. Appl. Mech. \textbf{75}, 044501, 2008) and the van Driest mixing length equation (E.R. van Driest, On turbulent flow near a wall, J. Aero. Sci. \textbf{23}, 1007, 1956) is used. The parameters …
Data available in literature from direct numerical simulations of two-dimensional turbulent channels by Lee & Moser (2015), Bernardini et al. (2014), Yamamoto and Tsuji (2018) and Orlandi et al. (2015) in a large range of Reynolds number have been used to find that shear parameter the ratio between the eddy turnover time and the time scale of the mean deformation (1/S), scales very well with the Reynolds number in the near-wall region. The good scaling is due to the eddy turnover time, although the turbulent kinetic energy and the rate of isotropic dissipation show a Reynolds dependence near t…
