Scaling of turbulent wall-bounded flows is revealed in the gradient structures, for each of the Reynolds stress components. Within the dissipation structure, an asymmetrical order exists, that we can deploy to unify the scaling and transport dynamics within and across these flows. There are subtle differences in the outer boundary conditions between channel and flat-plate boundary-layer flows, which modify the turbulence structure far from the wall. The self-similarity exhibited in the dissipation structures and corresponding transport dynamics establish capabilities and encompassing knowledge of wall-bounded turbulent flows.

We study the laminar and turbulent channel flow over a viscous hyper-elastic wall and show that it is possible to sustain an unsteady chaotic turbulent-like flow at any Reynolds number by properly choosing the wall elastic modulus. We consider the motion of passive, noninertial particles inside a turbulent channel simulated at $Re_τ = 950$. The inner region is made up of a log-law region and a wall layer. The wall layer is viewed in terms of the well known inrush-sweep-burst sequence observed since 1967. The effect of the variations of the permeability tensor on the close-to-the-wall behaviour of a turbulent channel flow bounded by porous walls is explored using a set of direct numerical simulations. The macroscopic behavior of dense suspensions of neutrally-buoyant spheres in turbulent plane channel flow is examined. We show that particles larger than the smallest turbulence scales cause the suspension to deviate from the continuum limit in which its dynamics is well described by an effective suspension viscosity. We develop predictive formulas for friction resistance in ducts with complex cross-sectional shape based on the use of the log law and neglect of wall shear stress nonuniformities. The traditional hydraulic diameter naturally emerges from the analysis as the controlling length scale for common duct shapes as triangles and regular polygons.
