We introduce a population model to analyze the mixing between hypothesised power-law and $\sim 35 M_\odot$ Gaussian bump black hole populations in the latest gravitational wave catalog, GWTC-3, estimating their co-location and separation. We find a relatively low level of mixing, $3.1^{+5.0}_{-3.1}\%$, between the power-law and Gaussian populations, compared to the percentage of mergers containing two Gaussian bump black holes, $5.0^{+3.2}_{-1.7}\%$. Our analysis indicates that black holes within the Gaussian bump are generally separate from the power-law population, with only a minor fraction engaging in mixing and contributing to the $\mathcal{M} \sim 14 M_\odot$ peak in the chirp mass. This leads us to identify a distinct population of Binary Gaussian Black Holes (BGBHs) that arise from mergers within the Gaussian bump. We suggest that current theories for the formation of the massive $35 M_\odot$ Gaussian bump population may need to reevaluate the underlying mechanisms that drive the preference for BGBHs.

Several astrophysical scenarios have been proposed to explain the origin of the population of binary black hole (BBH) mergers detected in gravitational waves (GWs) by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration. Among them, BBH mergers assembled dynamically in young massive and open clusters have been shown to produce merger rate densities consistent with LIGO/Virgo estimated rates. We use the results of a suite of direct, high-precision $N$-body evolutionary models of young massive and open clusters and build the population of BBH mergers, by accounting for both a cosmologically-motivated model for the form…
Clouds of ultralight bosons - such as axions - can form around a rapidly spinning black hole, if the black hole radius is comparable to the bosons' wavelength. The cloud rapidly extracts angular momentum from the black hole, and reduces it to a characteristic value that depends on the boson's mass as well as on the black hole mass and spin. Therefore, a measurement of a black hole mass and spin can be used to reveal or exclude the existence of such bosons. Using the black holes released by LIGO and Virgo in their GWTC-2, we perform a simultaneous measurement of the black hole spin distribution…
Black hole thermodynamics has brought strong hints of a profound and fundamental connection between gravity, thermodynamics, and quantum theory. If the black hole does behave like a natural thermodynamic system, it should be thermodynamically stable in a clean environment. In this paper, using the observational data of binary black hole (BBH) mergers observed by LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA detectors, we check whether the black hole remnants produced from BBH mergers in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA catalog GWTC-3 are thermodynamically stable. The criterion for the thermodynamic stability is quite simple and…

The Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors opened a new era to study black holes (BHs) in our Universe. A population of stellar-mass binary BHs (BBHs) are discovered to be heavier than previously expected. These heavy BBHs provide us an opportunity to achieve multiband observation with ground-based and space-based gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. In this work, we use BBHs discovered by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration as indubitable examples, and study in great detail the prospects for multiband observation with GW detectors in the near future. We apply the Fisher matrix to spinning, non-precessing i…
One fundamental goal of the newly born gravitational wave astronomy is discovering the origin of the observed binary black hole mergers. Towards this end, identifying features in the growing wealth of data may help in distinguishing different formation pathways. While large uncertainties still affect the binary formation models, spin-mass relations remain characteristic features of specific classes of channels. By focusing on the effective inspiral spin $χ_\text{eff}$, the best reconstructed spin-related merger parameter, we show that current GWTC-3 data support the hypothesis that a fraction …

I study the contribution of young massive star clusters (YMCs) and open star clusters (OCs) to the present-day intrinsic merger rate density of dynamically-assembled binary black holes (BBHs). The BBH merger event rate is estimated based on a set of 65 state-of-the-art evolutionary models of star clusters, as presented in Banerjee (2021). These relativistic direct many-body computed models incorporate up-to-date stellar mass loss and remnant formation ingredients. The merger-event rates are obtained by constructing a cluster population of the Universe, out of the models, taking into account ma…
With the black hole mass function (BHMF; assuming an exponential cutoff at a mass of $\sim 40\,M_\odot$) of coalescing binary black hole systems constructed with the events detected in the O1 run of the advanced LIGO/Virgo network, Liang et al.(2017) predicted that the birth of the lightest intermediate mass black holes (LIMBHs; with a final mass of $\gtrsim 100\,M_\odot$) is very likely to be caught by the advanced LIGO/Virgo detectors in their O3 run. The O1 and O2 observation run data, however, strongly favor a cutoff of the BHMF much sharper than the exponential one. In this work we show t…
The growing population of compact binary mergers detected with gravitational waves contains multiple events that are challenging to explain through isolated binary evolution. Such events have higher masses than are expected in isolated binaries, component spin-tilt angles that are misaligned, and/or non-negligible orbital eccentricities. We investigate the orbital eccentricities of 62 binary black hole candidates from the third gravitational-wave transient catalogue of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration with an aligned-spin, moderate-eccentricity waveform model. Within this framework, we find …
The measurement of the expansion history of the Universe from the redshift unknown gravitational wave (GW) sources (dark GW sources) detectable from the network of \texttt{LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA} (\texttt{LVK}) detectors depends on the synergy with the galaxy surveys having accurate redshift measurements over a broad redshift range, large sky coverage, and detectability of fainter galaxies. In this work, we explore the possible synergy of the LVK with the spectroscopic galaxy surveys such as \texttt{DESI} and \texttt{SPHEREx} to measure the cosmological parameters which are related to the cosmic exp…
The joint detection of GW170817 and GRB 170817A opened the era of multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves (GWs) and provided the first direct probe that at least some binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (S-GRBs). In the next years, we expect to have more multi-messenger detections of BNS mergers, thanks to the increasing sensitivity of GW detectors. Here, we present a comprehensive study on the prospects for joint GW and electromagnetic observations of merging BNSs in the fourth LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA observing run with \emph{Fermi}, \emph{Swift},…

I investigate the roles of cluster dynamics and massive binary evolution in producing stellar-remnant binary black hole (BBH) mergers over the cosmic time. To that end, dynamical BBH mergers are obtained from long-term direct N-body evolutionary models of $\sim10^4M_\odot$, pc-scale young massive clusters (YMC) evolving into moderate-mass open clusters (OC). Fast evolutionary models of massive isolated binaries (IB) yield BBHs from binary evolution. Population synthesis in a Model Universe is then performed, taking into account observed cosmic star-formation and enrichment histories, to obtain…
We carry out astrophysical inference for compact binary merger events in LIGO-Virgo's first gravitational-wave transient catalog (GWTC-1) using a physically motivated calibration model. We demonstrate that importance sampling can be used to reduce the cost of what would otherwise be a computationally challenging analysis. We show that including the physical estimate for the calibration error distribution has negligible impact on the inference of parameters for the events in GWTC-1. Studying a simulated signal with matched filter signal-to-noise ratio $\text{SNR}=200$, we project that a calibra…
Assuming that, for a given source of gravitational waves (GWs), we know its sky position, as is the case of GW events with an electromagnetic counterpart such as GW170817, we discuss a null stream method to probe GW polarizations including spin-0 (scalar) GW modes and spin-1 (vector) modes, especially with an expected network of Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA. For two independent null streams for four non-co-aligned GW detectors, we study a location on the sky, exactly at which the spin-0 modes of GWs vanish in any null stream for the GW detector network, though the strain output at a…

General metric theories of gravity in four-dimensional spacetimes can contain at most six polarization modes (two spin-0, two spin-1 and two spin-2) of gravitational waves (GWs). It has been recently shown that, with using four GW non-coaligned detectors, a direct test of the spin-1 modes can be done in principle separately from the spin-0 and spin-2 modes for a GW source in particular sky positions [Hagihara et al., Phys. Rev. D 98, 064035 (2018)]. They have found particular sky positions that satisfy a condition of killing completely the spin-0 modes in a so-called null stream which is a lin…
Bright in the Black: Searching for Electromagnetic Counterparts to Gravitational-Wave Candidates in LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Observation Runs with AstroSat-CZTI
Binary black holes (BBHs) detected by gravitational wave (GW) observations could be broadly divided into two formation channels: those formed through field binary evolution and those assembled dynamically in dense stellar systems. Each of these formation channels, and their sub-channels, populate a distinct region in the effective spin-mass ($χ_{\rm eff}-M$) plane. Depending on the branching ratio of different channels, an ensemble of BBHs could show a trend in this plane. Here we fit a mass-dependent distribution for $χ_{\rm eff}$ to the GWTC-1 BBHs from the first and second observing runs of…
It is expected that the orbital planes of gravitational-wave (GW) sources are isotropically distributed. However, both physical and technical factors, such as alternate theories of gravity with birefringence, catalog contamination, and search algorithm limitations, could result in inferring a non-isotropic distribution. Showing that the inferred astrophysical distribution of the orbital orientations is indeed isotropic can thus be used to rule out some violations of general relativity, as a null test about the purity of the GW catalog sample, and as a check that selection effects are being pro…
The distribution of LIGO black hole binaries (BBH) shows an intermediate-mass range consistent with the Salpeter Initial Mass Function (IMF) in black hole formation by core-collapse supernovae, subject to preserving binary association. They are effectively parameterized by mean mass $μ$ with Pearson correlation coefficient $r = 0.93\,\pm\,0.06$ of secondary to primary masses with mean mass-ratio $\bar{q}\simeq 0.67$, $q=M_2/M_1$, consistent with the paucity of intermediate-mass X-ray binaries. The mass-function of LIGO BBHs is well-approximated by a broken power-law with a tail $μ\gtrsim 31.4M…
We analyse the LIGO-Virgo data, including the recently released GWTC-2 dataset, to test a hypothesis that the data contains more than one population of black holes. We perform a maximum likelihood analysis including a population of astrophysical black holes with a truncated power-law mass function whose merger rate follows from star formation rate, and a population of primordial black holes for which we consider log-normal and critical collapse mass functions. We find that primordial black holes alone are strongly disfavoured by the data, while the best fit is obtained for the template combini…
We summarize initial results for high-energy neutrino counterpart searches coinciding with gravitational-wave events in LIGO/Virgo's GWTC-2 catalog using IceCube's neutrino triggers. We did not find any statistically significant high-energy neutrino counterpart and derived upper limits on the time-integrated neutrino emission on Earth as well as the isotropic equivalent energy emitted in high-energy neutrinos for each event.
