One fundamental goal of the newly born gravitational wave astronomy is discovering the origin of the observed binary black hole mergers. Towards this end, identifying features in the growing wealth of data may help in distinguishing different formation pathways. While large uncertainties still affect the binary formation models, spin-mass relations remain characteristic features of specific classes of channels. By focusing on the effective inspiral spin $χ_\text{eff}$, the best reconstructed spin-related merger parameter, we show that current GWTC-3 data support the hypothesis that a fraction of events may display mass-spin correlations similar to one expected by dynamical formation channels of either astrophysical or primordial nature. We quantify the Bayesian evidence in favour of those models, which are substantially preferred when compared to the Gaussian phenomenological model adopted to describe the distribution of $χ_\text{eff}$ in the recent LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA population analyses.
Gravitational wave (GW) echoes, if they exist, would be a probe to the near-horizon physics of black hole. In this brief report, we performed the Monte Carlo Markov Chain analysis to search for echo signal in all GWTC-1 and O3 GW events. We focus on the Insprial-Merger-Ringdown-Echo (IMRE) waveform, and apply the Bayesian model selection to compare the IMRE result with IMR's (no echo). We find no statistically significant ($<1σ$ combined) evidence for the GW echoes and only individual GW events with the echoes at $1\sim 2σ$ significance.
The discovery of gravitational waves (GWs) provides an unprecedented arena to test general relativity, including the gravitational Lorentz invariance violation (gLIV). In the propagation of GWs, a generic gLIV leads to anisotropy, dispersion, and birefringence. GW events constrain the anisotropic birefringence particularly well. Kostelecký and Mewes (2016) performed a preliminary analysis for GW150914. We improve their method and extend the analysis systematically to the whole GW transient catalog, GWTC-1. This is the first global analysis of the spacetime anisotropic Lorentzian structure with…
The LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA (LVK) collaboration has announced 90 coalescing binary black holes (BBHs) with $p_{\rm astro} > 50\%$ to date, however, the origin of their formation channels is still an open scientific question. Given various properties of BBHs (BH component masses and individual spins) inferred using the default priors by the LVK, independent groups have been trying to explain the formation of the BBHs with different formation channels. Of all formation scenarios, the chemically homogeneous evolution (CHE) channel has stood out with distinguishing features, namely, nearly-equal co…
We perform a new test of general relativity (GR) with signals from GWTC-2, the LIGO and Virgo catalog of gravitational wave detections. We search for the presence of amplitude birefringence, in which left versus right circularly polarized modes of gravitational waves are exponentially enhanced and suppressed during propagation. Such an effect is present in various beyond-GR theories but is absent in GR. We constrain the amount of amplitude birefringence consistent with the data through an opacity parameter $κ$, which we bound to be $κ\lesssim 0.74 \textrm{ Gpc}^{-1}$. We then use these theory-…
The propagation of gravitational waves can reveal fundamental features of the structure of spacetime. For instance, differences in the propagation of gravitational-wave polarizations would be a smoking gun for parity violations in the gravitational sector, as expected from birefringent theories like Chern-Simons gravity. Here we look for evidence of amplitude birefringence in the third catalog of detections by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory and Virgo through the use of birefringent templates inspired by dynamical Chern-Simons gravity. From $71$ binary-black-hole signal…
Several astrophysical scenarios have been proposed to explain the origin of the population of binary black hole (BBH) mergers detected in gravitational waves (GWs) by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration. Among them, BBH mergers assembled dynamically in young massive and open clusters have been shown to produce merger rate densities consistent with LIGO/Virgo estimated rates. We use the results of a suite of direct, high-precision $N$-body evolutionary models of young massive and open clusters and build the population of BBH mergers, by accounting for both a cosmologically-motivated model for the form…

In modified gravity models that allow for additional non-compact spacetime dimensions, energy from gravitational waves can leak into these extra spacetime dimensions, leading to a reduction in the amplitude of the observed gravitational waves, and thus a source of potential systematics in the inferred luminosity distances to gravitational wave sources. Since binary black hole (BBH) mergers are standard sirens, we use the pair-instability supernova (PISNe) mass gap and its predicted features to determine a mass scale and thus be able to break the mass-redshift degeneracy. We simultaneously fit …
We carry out astrophysical inference for compact binary merger events in LIGO-Virgo's first gravitational-wave transient catalog (GWTC-1) using a physically motivated calibration model. We demonstrate that importance sampling can be used to reduce the cost of what would otherwise be a computationally challenging analysis. We show that including the physical estimate for the calibration error distribution has negligible impact on the inference of parameters for the events in GWTC-1. Studying a simulated signal with matched filter signal-to-noise ratio $\text{SNR}=200$, we project that a calibra…
Lorentz invariance plays a fundamental role in modern physics. However, tiny violations of the Lorentz invariance may arise in some candidate quantum gravity theories. Prominent signatures of the gravitational Lorentz invariance violation (gLIV) include anisotropy, dispersion, and birefringence in the dispersion relation of gravitational waves (GWs). Using a total of 50 GW events in the GW transient catalogs GWTC-1 and GWTC-2, we perform an analysis on the anisotropic birefringence phenomenon. The use of multiple events allows us to completely break the degeneracy among gLIV coefficients and g…
The Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors opened a new era to study black holes (BHs) in our Universe. A population of stellar-mass binary BHs (BBHs) are discovered to be heavier than previously expected. These heavy BBHs provide us an opportunity to achieve multiband observation with ground-based and space-based gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. In this work, we use BBHs discovered by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration as indubitable examples, and study in great detail the prospects for multiband observation with GW detectors in the near future. We apply the Fisher matrix to spinning, non-precessing i…
Gravitational waves from the coalescence of binary black holes can be distinguished from noise transients in a detector network through Bayesian model selection by exploiting the coherence of the signal across the network. We present a Bayesian framework for calculating the posterior probability that a signal is of astrophysical origin, agnostic to the specific search strategy, pipeline or search domain with which a candidate is identified. We apply this framework under \textit{identical} assumptions to all events reported in the LIGO-Virgo GWTC-1 catalog, GW190412 and numerous event candidate…
When binary black holes merge in dense star clusters, their remnants can pair up with other black holes in the cluster, forming heavier and heavier black holes in a process called hierarchical merger. The most important condition for hierarchical merger to occur is that remnants formed by mergers are retained by the host star cluster. Using the publicly available gravitational-wave event database, we infer the magnitudes of kick velocities imparted to the remnant black holes due to anisotropic emission of gravitational waves and use that to quantify the retention probability of each event as a…
We present the result of the first deep learning-based search for the signature of microlensing in gravitational waves. This search seeks the signature induced by lenses with masses between $10^3M_\odot$--$10^5M_\odot$ from spectrograms of the binary black hole events in the first and second gravitational-wave transient catalogs. We use a deep learning model trained with spectrograms of simulated noisy gravitational-wave signals to classify the events into two classes, lensed or unlensed. We introduce ensemble learning and a majority voting-based consistency test for the predictions of ensembl…

With several dozen binary black hole events detected by LIGO/Virgo to date and many more expected in the next few years, gravitational-wave astronomy is shifting from individual-event analyses to population studies. Using the GWTC-2 catalog, we perform a hierarchical Bayesian analysis that for the first time combines several state-of-the-art astrophysical formation models with a population of primordial black holes (PBHs) and constrains the fraction of a putative subpopulation of PBHs in the data. We find that this fraction depends significantly on the set of assumed astrophysical models. Whil…
It is expected that the orbital planes of gravitational-wave (GW) sources are isotropically distributed. However, both physical and technical factors, such as alternate theories of gravity with birefringence, catalog contamination, and search algorithm limitations, could result in inferring a non-isotropic distribution. Showing that the inferred astrophysical distribution of the orbital orientations is indeed isotropic can thus be used to rule out some violations of general relativity, as a null test about the purity of the GW catalog sample, and as a check that selection effects are being pro…

Black hole binaries formed dynamically in globular clusters are believed to be one of the main sources of gravitational waves in the Universe. Here, we use our new population synthesis code, cBHBd, to determine the redshift evolution of the merger rate density and masses of black hole binaries formed in globular clusters. We simulate $\sim 2$ million models to explore the parameter space that is relevant to real clusters and over all mass scales. We show that when uncertainties on the initial cluster mass function and density are properly taken into account, they become the two dominant factor…
The LIGO Scientific, Virgo and KAGRA Collaborations recently released the third gravitational wave transient catalog or GWTC-3, significantly expanding the number of gravitational wave (GW) signals. To address the -- still uncertain -- formation channels of the source compact binaries, their population properties must be characterized. The computational cost of the Bayesian hierarchical methods employed thus far scales with the size of the event catalogs, and such methods have until recently assumed fixed functional forms for the source distribution. Here we propose a fast and flexible method …
Parity-violating (PV) gravity has recently attracted interest in several aspects. One of them is the axion-graviton coupling to test the axion-dark matter model. Moreover, by extending Chern-Simons (CS) gravity to include derivatives of a scalar field up to the second order, a more general class of PV gravity theory, which we call the CNCL model, has been proposed~[M. Crisostomi {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. D, {\bf 97}, 044034 (2018)]. The model can be further extended by including even higher derivatives of the scalar field and/or higher curvature terms. In this paper, we discuss the effect of pa…
Multiband observations of coalescing stellar-mass black holes binaries could deliver valuable information on the formation of those sources and potential deviations from General Relativity. Some of these binaries might be first detected by the space-based detector LISA and, then, several years later, observed with ground-based detectors. Due to large uncertainties in astrophysical models, it is hard to predict the population of such binaries that LISA could observe. In this work, we assess the ability of LISA to detect the events of the third catalogue of gravitational wave sources released by…
If dark matter stems from the background of a very light gauge boson, this gauge boson could exert forces on test masses in gravitational wave detectors, resulting in displacements with a characteristic frequency set by the gauge boson mass. We outline a novel search strategy to hunt for such dark matter, and show that both ground-based and future space-based gravitational wave detectors have the capability to make a 5$σ$ discovery in unexplored parameter regimes.
The gravitational waveform of a merging stellar-mass binary is described at leading order by a quadrupolar mode. However, the complete waveform includes higher-order modes, which encode valuable information not accessible from the leading-order mode alone. Despite this, the majority of astrophysical inferences so far obtained with observations of gravitational waves employ only the leading order mode because calculations with higher-order modes are often computationally challenging. We show how to efficiently incorporate higher-order modes into astrophysical inference calculations with a two s…

Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo's newly-released GWTC-2 catalog of gravitational-wave detections offers unprecedented information about the spin magnitudes and orientations of merging binary black holes (BBHs). Notably, analysis of the BBH population suggests the presence of binaries whose component spins are significantly misaligned with respect to their orbital angular momenta. Significantly misaligned spins are typically predicted to be at odds with isolated field formation via standard common envelope (CE) evolution, and hence a "smoking gun" signature of dynamical binary formation inside…
A compact object with a mass $\mathcal{O}(1 \sim 1000) M_{\odot}$, such as a black hole of stellar or primordial origin or a neutron star, and a much lighter exotic compact object with a subsolar mass could form a non-standard mini extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI) and emit gravitational waves within the frequency band of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. These systems are extremely interesting because detecting them would definitively point to new physics. We study the capability of using LIGO/Virgo to search for mini-EMRIs and find that a large class of exotic compact objects can b…

The LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Virgo Collaboration (LVC) have recently reported in GWTC-2.1 eight additional candidate events with a probability of astrophysical origin greater than 0.5 in the LVC deeper search on O3a running. In GWTC-2.1, the majority of the effective inspiral spins ($χ_{\rm eff}$) show magnitudes consistent with zero, while two (GW190403$_{-}$051519 and GW190805$_{-}$211137) of the eight new events have $χ_{\rm eff}$ $> 0$ (at 90% credibility). We note that GW190403$_{-}$051519 was reported with $χ_{\rm eff}$ = $0.70^{+0.15}_{-0.27}$ and mass ratio $q$ = $0.25^{+0.54}…
Wormholes bridging distant places of the universe are well-known solutions of general relativity. In particular, traversable wormholes which allow interstellar traveling are also popular in science fiction. However, no hint of their existence has been found yet. In this work, we propose using the gravitational wave (GW) scattering off spherical wormholes to search for their existence. We carefully calculate the reflected and transmitted waveforms with time-independent scattering theory. Our results quantitatively show the echo signatures in the two universes on both sides of the wormhole. In a…
With the recent release of the second gravitational-wave transient catalogue (GWTC-2), which introduced dozens of new detections, we are at a turning point of gravitational wave astronomy, as we are now able to directly infer constraints on the astrophysical population of compact objects. Here, we tackle the burning issue of understanding the origin of binary black hole (BBH) mergers. To this effect, we make use of state-of-the-art population synthesis and N-body simulations, to represent two distinct formation channels: BBHs formed in the field (isolated channel) and in young star clusters (d…
