The control problems of complex physical systems have broad applications in science and engineering. Previous studies have shown that generative control methods based on diffusion models offer significant advantages for solving these problems. However, existing generative control approaches face challenges in both performance and efficiency when extended to the closed-loop setting, which is essential for effective control. In this paper, we propose an efficient Closed-Loop Diffusion method for Physical systems Control (CL-DiffPhyCon). By employing an asynchronous denoising framework for different physical time steps, CL-DiffPhyCon generates control signals conditioned on real-time feedback from the system with significantly reduced computational cost during sampling. Additionally, the control process could be further accelerated by incorporating fast sampling techniques, such as DDIM. We evaluate CL-DiffPhyCon on two tasks: 1D Burgers' equation control and 2D incompressible fluid control. The results demonstrate that CL-DiffPhyCon achieves superior control performance with significant improvements in sampling efficiency. The code can be found at https://github.com/AI4Science-WestlakeU/CL_DiffPhyCon.

Fault detection problem for closed loop uncertain dynamical systems, is investigated in this paper, using different deep learning based methods. Traditional classifier based method does not perform well, because of the inherent difficulty of detecting system level faults for closed loop dynamical system. Specifically, acting controller in any closed loop dynamical system, works to reduce the effect of system level faults. A novel Generative Adversarial based deep Autoencoder is designed to classify datasets under normal and faulty operating conditions. This proposed network performs significan…
The Consistency of the Closed-Loop Simplified Refined Instrumental Variable method for Continuous-time system (CLSRIVC) is analysed based on sampled data. It is proven that the CLSRIVC estimator is not consistent when a continuous-time controller is used in the closed-loop.
We show that given a desired closed-loop response for a system, there exists an affine subspace of controllers that achieve this response. By leveraging the existence of this subspace, we are able to separate controller design from closed-loop design by first synthesizing the desired closed-loop response and then synthesizing a controller that achieves the desired response. This is a useful extension to the recently introduced System Level Synthesis framework, in which the controller and closed-loop response are jointly synthesized and we cannot enforce controller-specific constraints without …
In this work, we propose a framework to learn feedback control policies with guarantees on closed-loop generalization and adversarial robustness. These policies are learned directly from expert demonstrations, contained in a dataset of state-control input pairs, without any prior knowledge of the task and system model. We use a Lipschitz-constrained loss minimization scheme to learn feedback policies with certified closed-loop robustness, wherein the Lipschitz constraint serves as a mechanism to tune the generalization performance and robustness to adversarial disturbances. Our analysis exploi…
In this article, we study the linear time-invariant state-feedback controller design problem for distributed systems. We follow the recently developed system level synthesis (SLS) approach and impose locality structure on the resulting closed-loop mappings; the corresponding controller implementation inherits this prescribed structure. In contrast to existing SLS results, we derive an explicit (rather than implicit) parameterization of all achievable stabilized closed-loops. This admits more efficient IIR representations of the temporal part of the closed-loop dynamics, and it allows for the H…
High-performance real-time wireless connectivity is at the heart of the Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT). Realizing wireless closed-loop control is crucial for various mission-critical IIoT systems. Existing wireless technologies fall short of meeting the stringent performance requirements of closed-loop control. This paper presents a novel wireless solution, called \textsf{GALLOP}, for realizing closed-loop control over multi-hop or single-hop networks. \textsf{GALLOP} adopts a pragmatic design approach for addressing the challenges of wireless closed-loop control. Key design aspects of \…
This paper introduces a closed-loop frequency analysis tool for reset control systems. To begin with sufficient conditions for the existence of the steady-state response for a closed-loop system with a reset element and driven by periodic references are provided. It is then shown that, under specific conditions, such a steady-state response for periodic inputs is periodic with the same period as the input. Furthermore, a framework to obtain the steady-state response and to define a notion of closed-loop frequency response, including high order harmonics, is presented. Finally, pseudo-sensitivi…
There has been an increasing interest in using neural networks in closed-loop control systems to improve performance and reduce computational costs for on-line implementation. However, providing safety and stability guarantees for these systems is challenging due to the nonlinear and compositional structure of neural networks. In this paper, we propose a novel forward reachability analysis method for the safety verification of linear time-varying systems with neural networks in feedback interconnection. Our technical approach relies on abstracting the nonlinear activation functions by quadrati…

This paper is concerned with a bilinear control problem for enhancing convection-cooling via an incompressible velocity field. Both optimal open-loop control and closed-loop feedback control designs are addressed. First and second order optimality conditions for characterizing the optimal solution are discussed. In particular, the method of instantaneous control is applied to establish the feedback laws. Moreover, the construction of feedback laws is also investigated by directly utilizing the optimality system with appropriate numerical discretization schemes. Computationally, it is much easi…
One of the primary challenges of system identification is determining how much data is necessary to adequately fit a model. Non-asymptotic characterizations of the performance of system identification methods provide this knowledge. Such characterizations are available for several algorithms performing open-loop identification. Often times, however, data is collected in closed-loop. Application of open-loop identification methods to closed-loop data can result in biased estimates. One method used by subspace identification techniques to eliminate these biases involves first fitting a long-hori…
We present a numerical method to analyze the relative stability of closed-loop single-input-single-output (SISO) dead-time systems on a given left complex half-plane for all positive delays. The well-known boundary crossing method for the imaginary axis is extended to a given vertical line stability boundary in the complex plane for these type of systems. The method allows to compute the characteristic roots crossing the relative stability boundary and their corresponding delays up to a maximum predefined delay. Based on this method, we analyze the relative stability of the closed-loop system …
An increasing trend in the use of neural networks in control systems is being observed. The aim of this paper is to reveal that the straightforward application of learning neural network feedforward controllers with closed-loop data may introduce parameter inconsistency that degrades control performance, and to provide a solution. The proposed method employs instrumental variables to ensure consistent parameter estimates. A nonlinear system example reveals that the developed instrumental variable neural network (IVNN) approach asymptotically recovers the optimal solution, while pre-existing ap…

Willems' fundamental lemma and system level synthesis both characterize a linear dynamic system by its input/output sequences. In this work, we extend the application of the fundamental lemma from deterministic to uncertain LTI systems and then further prove this extension to be equivalent to system level synthesis. Based on this uncertain extension, a robust closed-loop data-enabled predictive control scheme is proposed, where a causal feedback control law is further derived. Two numerical experiments, including the temperature control of a single-zone building, are carried out to validate th…

We study the problem of performance optimization of closed-loop control systems with unmodeled dynamics. Bayesian optimization (BO) has been demonstrated effective for improving closed-loop performance by automatically tuning controller gains or reference setpoints in a model-free manner. However, BO methods have rarely been tested on dynamical systems with unmodeled constraints. In this paper, we propose a violation-aware BO algorithm (VABO) that optimizes closed-loop performance while simultaneously learning constraint-feasible solutions. Unlike classical constrained BO methods which allow a…

Such virtual trials enable rapid and risk-free pretrial testing of algorithms, and they can be used to compare different treatment variations for large and diverse populations. The participants are represented by multiple mathematical models, consisting of stochastic differential equations, and we use Monte Carlo closed-loop simulations to compute detailed statistics of the closed-loop treatments. We implement the virtual clinical trial using high-perf…
This paper proposes an adaptive neuro-fuzzy framework to improve drug infusion rate in closed-loop control of anesthesia. The proposed controller provides a sub-optimal propofol administration rate as input to reach the desired bispectral index, which is the output of the system, in both induction and maintenance phases. In this controller, a critic agent assesses the plant output and produces a reinforcement signal to adapt the controller parameters and minimize the propofol administration rate. The controller is applied to a conventional pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamics model of anesthesia t…

The proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control law is often overlooked as a computational imitation of the critic control in human decision. This paper provides a formulation to remedy this problem. Further, based on the characteristic settling-behaviour of dynamical systems, the "closed PID-loop model" following control (CPLMFC) method is introduced for automatic PID design. Also, a method for closed-loop settling-time identification is provided. The CPLMFC algorithm and some recommended guidelines are given for setting the critic weights of the PID. Finally, two representative case-studi…
In this paper, the stabilization problem with closed-loop domain of attraction (DOA) enlargement for discrete-time general nonlinear plants is solved. First, a sufficient condition for asymptotic stabilization and estimation of the closed-loop DOA is given. It shows that, for a given Lyapunov function, the negative-definite and invariant set in the state-control space is a stabilizing controller set and its projection along the control space to the state space can be an estimate of the closed-loop DOA. Then, an algorithm is proposed to approximate the negative-definite and invariant set for th…
