We investigate Lorentz invariance breaking in quantum wires due to Rashba spin-orbit interaction and transverse phonons. Using bosonization, we derive an effective action coupling electronic and mechanical degrees of freedom. Stikingly, at a quantum phase transition between straight and bent wire states, we find a gapped phonon mode and a gapless mode with quadratic dispersion, signaling the breaking of Lorentz invariance. We explore stability conditions for general potentials and propose nano-mechanical back-action as a sensitive tool for detecting this transition, with implications for Sliding Luttinger Liquids and dimensional crossover studies.
We study the Zeeman splitting in induced ballistic 1D quantum wires aligned along the [233] and [011] axes of a high mobility (311)A undoped heterostructure. Our data shows that the g-factor anisotropy for magnetic fields applied along the high symmetry [011] direction can be explained by the 1D confinement only. However when the magnetic field is along [233] there is an interplay between the 1D confinement and 2D crystal anisotropy. This is highlighted for the [233] wire by an unusual non-monotonic behavior of the g-factor as the wire is made narrower.
We study the interplay between disorder and interaction in one-dimensional topological superconductors which carry localized Majorana zero-energy states. Using Abelian bosonization and the perturbative renormalization group (RG) approach, we obtain the RG-flow and the associated scaling dimensions of the parameters and identify the critical points of the low-energy theory. We predict a quantum phase transition from a topological superconducting phase to a non-topological localized phase, and obtain the phase boundary between these two phases as a function of the electron-electron interaction a…
The influence of Coulomb interaction on the electron transport through molecular wires is studied in the regime of incoherent tunneling. In the limit of strong Coulomb repulsion, the current for spinless electrons is determined. It is shown that the voltage profile along the wire crucially influences the dependence of the current on the wire length. Upon inclusion of the spin degree of freedom one finds a blocking effect which depends both on the interaction strength and on the population of the wire. For finite Coulomb interaction, the temperature dependence of the blocking is studied and it …
The Berry-phase mediated valley-selected skew scattering in alpha-T3 lattices is demonstrated. The interplay of Lorentz and Berry forces in position and momentum spaces is revealed and analyzed. Many-body screening of the electron-impurity interaction is taken into account to avoid overestimation of back- and skew-scattering of electrons in the system. Triplet peak from skew interactions at two valleys is found in near-vertical and near-horizontal forward- and backward-scattering directions for small Berry phases and low magnetic fields. Magnetic-field dependence in both non-equilibrium and th…
We consider a one-dimensional system combining local magnetic moments and a delocalized metallic band on top of a superconducting substrate. This system can describe a chain of magnetic impurities with both localized polarized orbitals and delocalized s-like orbitals or a conducting wire with embedded magnetic impurities. We study the interplay between the one-dimensional Shiba band physics arising from the interplay between magnetic moments and the substrate and the delocalized wire-like conduction band on top of the superconductor. We derive an effective low-energy Hamiltonian in terms of tw…
We analyze the change in the resistance of a junction between a diffusive ferromagnetic (F) wire and normal metal electrode, due to the onset of superconductivity (S) in the latter and a double Andreev scattering process leading to a complete internal reflection of a large fraction of the spin-polarized electrons back into the ferromagnet. The superconducting transition results in an additional contact resistance arising from the necessity to match spin-polarized current in F-wire to spin-less current in S-reservoir, which is comparable to the resistance of a piece of a F-wire with the length …
The transport behavior of a double quantum dot side-attached to a topological superconducting wire hosting Majorana zero-energy modes is studied theoretically in the strong correlation regime. It is shown that Majorana modes can leak to the whole nanostructure, giving rise to a subtle interplay between the two-stage Kondo screening and the half-fermionic nature of Majorana quasiparticles. In particular, the coupling to the topological wire is found to reduce the effective exchange interaction between the two quantum dots in the absence of normal leads. Interestingly, it also results in an enha…
A single-channel quantum wire with two well-separated Zeeman subbands and in the presence of a weak spin-orbit coupling is considered. An impurity level which is split off the upper subband is degenerate with the continuum of the lower subband. We show that, when the Fermi level lies in the vicinity of the impurity level, the transport is completely blocked. This is the manifestation of the effect of resonant reflection and can be viewed as resonant tunneling between left-moving and right-moving electrons via the impurity level. We incorporate electron-electron interactions and study their eff…
We study the interplay of electron-electron interactions and Rashba spin-orbit coupling in one-dimensional ballistic wires. Using the renormalization group approach we construct the phase diagram in terms of Rashba coupling, Tomonaga-Luttinger stiffness and backward scattering strength. We identify the parameter regimes with a dynamically generated spin gap and show where the Luttinger liquid prevails. We also discuss the consequences for the operation of the Datta-Das transistor.
We present a detailed theoretical study of the electronic spectrum and Zeeman splitting in hole quantum wires. The spin-3/2 character of the topmost bulk-valence-band states results in a strong variation of subband-edge g factors between different subbands. We elucidate the interplay between quantum confinement and heavy-hole - light-hole mixing and identify a certain robustness displayed by low-lying hole-wire subband edges with respect to changes in the shape or strength of the wire potential. The ability to address individual subband edges in, e.g., transport or optical experiments enables …
We study the van der Waals interaction of a metallic or narrow-gap semiconducting nanowire with a surface, in the regime of intermediate wire-surface distances $(v_{F}/c)L \ll d \ll L $ or $L \ll d \ll (c/v_{F})L $, where $L$ is the nanowire length, $d$ is the distance to the surface, and $v_{F}$ is the characteristic velocity of nanowire electrons (for a metallic wire, it is the Fermi velocity). Our approach, based on the Luttinger liquid framework, allows one to analyze the dependence of the interaction on the interplay between the nanowire length, wire-surface distance, and characteristic l…
We present analysis of the interacting quantum wire problem in the presence of magnetic field and spin-orbit interaction. We show that an interesting interplay of Zeeman and spin-orbit terms, facilitated by the electron-electron interaction, results in the spin-density wave (SDW) state when the magnetic field and spin-orbit axes are orthogonal. This strongly affects charge transport through the wire: with SDW stabilized, single particle backscattering off an nonmagnetic impurity becomes irrelevant. Sensitivity of the effect to the direction of the magnetic field can be used for experimental ve…
A quantum-mechanical stability analysis of metallic nanowires within the free-electron model is presented. The stability is determined by an interplay of electron-shell effects, the Rayleigh instability due to surface tension, and the Peierls instability. Although the latter effect limits the maximum length also for wires with "magic radii", it is found that nanowires in the micrometer range can be stable at room temperature.
One-dimensional lattice with strong spin-orbit interactions (SOI) and Zeeman magnetic field is shown to lead to the formation of a helical charge-density wave (CDW) state near half-filling. Interplay of the magnetic field, SOI constants and the CDW gap seems to support Majorana bound states under appropriate value of the external parameters. Explicit calculation of the quasi-particles' wave functions supports a formation of the localized zero-energy state, bounded to the sample end-points. Symmetry classification of the system is provided. Relative value of the density of states shows a precis…
We explore the possibility to break time reversal invariance at the junction of quantum wires. The universal features in the bulk of the wires are described by the anyon Luttinger liquid. A simple necessary and sufficient condition for the breaking of time reversal invariance is formulated in terms of the scattering matrix at the junction. The phase diagram of a junction with generic number of wires is investigated in this framework. We give an explicit classification of those critical points which can be reached by bosonization and study the interplay between their stability and symmetry cont…
We study a one-dimensional (1D) interacting electronic liquid coupled to a 1D array of classical magnetic moments and to a superconductor. We show that at low energy and temperature the magnetic moments and the electrons become strongly entangled and that a magnetic spiral structure emerges without any adjustable parameters. For strong enough coupling between the two, the 1D electronic liquid is driven into a topological superconducting phase supporting Majorana fermions without any fine-tuning of external parameters. Our analysis applies at low enough temperature to a quantum wire in proximit…
We investigate dynamical transport properties of interacting electrons moving in a vibrating nanoelectromechanical wire in a magnetic field. We have built an exactly solvable model in which electric current and mechanical oscillation are treated fully quantum mechanically on an equal footing. Quantum mechanically fluctuating Aharonov-Bohm phases obtained by the electrons cause nontrivial contribution to mechanical vibration and electrical conduction of the wire. We demonstrate our theory by calculating the admittance of the wire which are influenced by the multiple interplay between the mechan…
Molecular wires of the acene-family can be viewed as a physical realization of a two-rung ladder Hamiltonian. For acene-ladders, closed-shell ab-initio calculations and elementary zone-folding arguments predict incommensurate gap oscillations as a function of the number of repetitive ring units, $N_{\text{R}}$, exhibiting a period of about ten rings. %% Results employing open-shell calculations and a mean-field treatment of interactions suggest anti-ferromagnetic correlations that could potentially open a large gap and wash out the gap oscillations. % Within the framework of a Hubbard model wi…
We study analytically and numerically spin effects in MoS_2 monolayer armchair quantum wires and quantum dots. The interplay between intrinsic and Rashba spin orbit interactions induced by an electric field leads to helical modes, giving rise to spin filtering in time-reversal invariant systems. The Rashba spin orbit interaction can also be generated by spatially varying magnetic fields. In this case, the system can be in a helical regime with nearly perfect spin polarization. If such a quantum wire is brought into proximity to an s-wave superconductor, the system can be tuned into a topologic…
We consider the current induced in a quantum wire by external electromagnetic radiation. The photocurrent is caused by the interplay of spin-orbit interaction (Rashba and Dresselhaus terms) and external in-plane magnetic field. We calculate this current using a Wigner functions approach taking into account radiation-induced transitions between transverse subbands. The magnitude and the direction of the current depend on the Dresselhaus and Rashba constants, strength of magnetic field, radiation frequency and intensity. The current can be controlled by changing some of these parameters.
We have studied both experimentally and theoretically the reprogrammable spin wave band structure in Permalloy(10nm)/Cu(5nm)/Permalloy(30nm) nanowire arrays of width w=280 nm and inter-wire separation in the range from 80 to 280 nm. We found that, depending on the inter-wire separation, the anti-parallel configuration, where the magnetizations of the two Permalloy layers point in opposite directions, is stabilized over specific magnetic field ranges thus enabling us to directly compare the band structure with that of the parallel alignment. We show that collective spin waves of the Bloch type …
We consider an ideal parabolic quantum wire in a perpendicular magnetic field. A simple Gaussian shaped scattering potential well or hill is flashed softly on and off with its maximum at $t=0$, mimicking a temporary broadening or narrowing of the wire. By an extension of the Lippmann-Schwinger formalism to time-dependent scattering potentials we investigate the effects on the continuous current that is driven through the quantum wire with a vanishingly small forward bias. The Lippmann-Schwinger approach to the scattering process enables us to investigate the interplay between geometrical effec…
In this work, we study a possibility to measure the transverse and longitudinal relaxation times of a collection of polarized nuclear spins located in the region of a quantum wire via its conductance. The interplay of an external in-plane magnetic field, spin-orbit interaction, and the changing field of the spin-polarized nuclei cause the conductance of the quantum wire to evolve in time. We show that it is possible to extract the transverse and longitudinal relaxation times of the spin-polarized nuclei from the time dependence of the conductance.
We present analysis of the interacting quantum wire problem in the presence of magnetic field and spin-orbital interaction. We show that an interesting interplay of Zeeman and spin-orbit terms, facilitated by the electron-electron interaction, results in the spin-density wave (SDW) state when the magnetic field and spin-orbit axes are orthogonal. We show that this instability is enhanced in a closely related problem of Heisenberg spin chain with asymmetric uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Magnetic field in the direction perpendicular to the DM anisotropy axis results in staggere…
Spin-orbit torque provides a powerful means of manipulating domain walls along magnetic wires. However, the current density required for domain wall motion is still too high to realize low power devices. Here we experimentally demonstrate helicity-dependent domain wall motion by combining synchronized femtosecond laser pulses and short current pulses in Co/Ni/Co ultra-thin film wires with perpendicular magnetization. Domain wall can remain pinned under one laser circular helicity while depinned by the opposite circular helicity. Thanks to the all-optical helicity-dependent effect, the threshol…
The Lloyd model is extended to the exciton problem in quasi one-dimensional structures to study the interplay between the Coulomb attraction and disorder scattering. Within this model the averaging and resummation of the locator series can be performed analytically. As an application, the optical absorption in quantum box wires is investigated. Without electron-hole interaction, fluctuations in the well-width lead to an asymmetric broadening of the minibands with respect to the lower and upper band-edges.
The stationary current induced by a strong running potential wave in one-dimensional system is studied. Such a wave can result from illumination of a straight quantum wire with special grating or spiral quantum wire by circular-polarized light. The wave drags electrons in the direction correlating with the direction of the system symmetry and polarization of light. In a pure system the wave induces minibands in the accompanied system of reference. We study the effect in the presence of impurity scattering. The current is an interplay between the wave drag and impurity braking. It was found tha…
We demonstrate that a split-gate quantum wire in the integer quantum Hall regime can exhibit electronic transport hysteresis for up- and down-sweeps of a magnetic field. This behavior is shown to be due to phase spin transitions between two different ground states with and without spatial spin polarization in the vicinity of the wire boundary. The observed effect has a many-body origin arising from an interplay between a confining potential, Coulomb interactions and the exchange interaction. We also demonstrate and explain why the hysteretic behavior is absent for steep and smooth confining po…
We analyze the spectrum of electron density oscillations in an interacting one-dimensional electron system with an impurity. The system's inhomogeneity is characterized by different values of Fermi wave vectors $k_F=k_{L/R}$ on left/right side of the scatterer, leading to a Landauer dipole formation. We demonstrate, that while in the noninteracting system the Friedel oscillations possess only one periodicity related to the local $k_F$, say $k_L$ on the left side, the interplay of the interactions and the Landauer dipole generates an additional peak in the spectrum of density oscillations at th…
We generalize the bosonization methods for systems in the half line that we discussed elsewhere, to study the effects of interactions on electronic systems coupled to impurities. We introduce a model for a quantum wire coupled with a quantum dot by a purely capacitive interaction. We show that the effect on the quantum wire is a dynamical boundary condition which reflects the charge fluctuations of the quantum dot. Special attention is given to the role of the fermion boundary conditions and their interplay with the electron interactions on the bosonized effective theory.
The inhomogeneous Tomonaga Luttinger liquid model describing an interacting quantum wire adiabatically coupled to non-interacting leads is analyzed in the presence of a weak impurity within the wire. Due to strong electronic correlations in the wire, the effects of impurity backscattering, finite bias, finite temperature, and finite length lead to characteristic non-monotonic parameter dependencies of the average current. We discuss oscillations of the non-linear current voltage characteristics that arise due to reflections of plasmon modes at the impurity and quasi Andreev reflections at the …
We have analyzed theoretically the Zeeman splitting of hole-quantum-wire subband edges. As is typical for any bound state, their g factor depends on both an intrinsic g factor of the material and an additional contribution arising from a finite bound-state orbital angular momentum. We discuss the quantum-confinement-induced interplay between bulk-material and orbital effects, which is nontrivial due to the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. A compact analytical formula is provided that elucidates this interplay and can be useful for predicting Zeeman splitting in generic hole-wire geometr…
We consider a two-dimensional magnetic tunnel junction of the FM/I/QW(FM+SO)/I/N structure, where FM, I and QW(FM+SO) stand for a ferromagnet, an insulator and a quantum wire (QW) with both magnetic ordering and Rashba spin-orbit (SOC), respectively. The tunneling magneto-resistance (TMR) exhibits strong anisotropy and switches sign as the polarization direction varies relative to the QW axis, due to interplay among the one-dimensionality, the magnetic ordering, and the strong SOC of the QW. The results may provide a possible explanation for the sign-switching anisotropic TMR recently observed…
Photocurrent generation is studied in a system composed of a quantum wire with side-coupled quantum rings. The current generation results from the interplay of the particular geometry of the system and the use of circularly polarized radiation. We study the energy-momentum conservation for optical transitions involving electrons moving forwards and backwards in the wire. Due to the lack of time-reversal symmetry in the radiation, the optical transitions depend on the direction of motion of the electrons, leading to a current at zero bias voltage. The photocurrent increases with the number of r…
In this work we uncover an interesting quantum plateau behavior for the Andreev reflection between a one-dimensional quantum wire and superconductor. The quantum plateau is achieved by properly tuning the interplay of the spin-orbit coupling within the quantum wire and its tunnel coupling to the superconductor. This plateau behavior is justified to be unique by excluding possible existences in the cases associated with multi-channel quantum wire, the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk continuous model with a barrier, and lattice system with on-site impurity at the interface.
We demonstrate in theory that it is possible to all-electrically manipulate the RKKY interaction in a quasi-one-dimensional electron gas embedded in a semiconductor heterostructure, in the presence of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction. In an undoped semiconductor quantum wire where intermediate excitations are gapped, the interaction becomes the short-ranged Bloembergen-Rowland super-exchange interaction. Owing to the interplay of different types of spin-orbit interaction, the interaction can be controlled to realize various spin models, e.g., isotropic and anisotropic Heisenberg-l…
We analyze the transport properties of two artificial magnetic impurities coupled togethervia a tunable RKKY interaction mediated by conduction electrons of a finite size one dimensional wire. We show that the sign of the RKKY interaction can be controlled by gating the wire. We investigate the interplay between finite size effects and RKKY interaction and found that the two artificial impurities start to interact each-other as soon as the Kondo screening cloud length becomes larger that the length of the wire. This should allow to give a lower experimental estimate of the Kondo screening clou…
The interplay of photon spin and orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the optical fiber (1D waveguide) has recently risen to the forefront of quantum nanophotonics. Here, we introduce the fermionic dual of the optical fiber, the Dirac wire, which exhibits unique electronic spin and OAM properties arising from confined solutions of the Dirac equation. The Dirac wires analyzed here represent cylindrical generalizations of the Jackiw-Rebbi domain wall and the minimal topological insulator, which are of significant interest in spintronics. We show the unique longitudinal spin arising from electrons c…
Tunneling spectroscopy of one-dimensional interacting wires can be profoundly sensitive to the boundary conditions of the wire. Here, we analyze the tunneling spectroscopy of a wire coupled to capacitive metallic leads. Strikingly, with increasing many-body interactions in the wire, the impact of the boundary noise becomes more prominent. This interplay allows for a smooth crossover from standard 1D tunneling signatures into a regime where the tunneling is dominated by the fluctuations at the leads. This regime is characterized by elevated zero-bias tunneling alongside a universal power-law de…
We use a non-Markovian generalized master equation (GME) to describe the time-dependent charge transfer through a parabolically confined quantum wire of a finite length coupled to semi-infinite quasi two-dimensional leads. The quantum wire and the leads are in a perpendicular external magnetic field. The contacts to the left and right leads depend on time and are kept out of phase to model a quantum turnstile of finite size. The effects of the driving period of the turnstile, the external magnetic field, the character of the contacts, and the chemical potential bias on the effectiveness of the…
We study the interplay of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings (SOCs) and a uniform perpendicular magnetic field $\textbf{B}$ on the transport of a spin-polarized electron along a curved quantum wire. Eigenenergies and eigenfunctions of the system were analytically solved in the presence of both SOCs for a confinement radius $R$. From the transmission coefficients, the spin transport properties such as spin polarization, probability current density and spin conductance were computed numerically to determine their dependence on the SOCs, $\textbf{B}$ and $R$. We find the condition f…
We have theoretically studied the temporal fluctuations and the resulting kinetic noise in the average spin polarization of an electron ensemble drifting in a quantum wire under a high electric field. Electrons are initially injected in the wire from a ferromagnetic contact with all their spins polarized along the wire axis. The average spin polarization of the ensemble decays during transport because of D'yakonov-Perel' relaxation caused by both Rashba and Dresselhaus interactions. Once steady state is reached, the average spin fluctuates randomly around zero. The time average of this fluctua…
We study theoretically spin decoherence and intrinsic spin noise in semiconductor quantum wires caused by an interplay of electron hopping between the localized states and the hyperfine interaction of electron and nuclear spins. At a sufficiently low density of localization sites the hopping rates have an exponentially broad distribution. It allows the description of the spin dynamics in terms of closely-situated "pairs" of sites and single "reaching" states, from which the series of hops result in the electron localized inside a "pair". The developed analytical model and numerical simulations…
We investigate theoretically the electronic structure and transport for a two-level quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) under the irradiation of an external laser field at low temperatures. The photon-induced transitions between SOC-splitted subbands with the same lateral confinement quantum numbers and between subbands with different confinement quantum number are expected. Using the method of equation of motion (EOM) for Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's functions (NGF), we examine the time-averaged density of states (DOS) and the spin polarized conductance for the system with ph…
Impurities and defects are ubiquitous in topological insulators (TIs) and thus understanding the effects of disorder on electronic transport is important. We calculate the distribution of the random conductance fluctuations $P(G)$ of disordered 2D TI wires modeled by the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) Hamiltonian with realistic parameters. As we show, the disorder drives the TIs into different regimes: metal (M), quantum spin-Hall insulator (QSHI), and ordinary insulator (OI). By varying the disorder strength and Fermi energy, we calculate analytically and numerically $P(G)$ across the entire pha…
In this paper one deals with the theoretical derivation of spin precession effects in quasi 1D quantum wire models. Such models get characterized by equal coupling strength superpositions of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions of dimensionless magnitude $a$ under the influence of in-plane magnetic fields of magnitude $B$. Besides the wavenumber $k$ relying on the 1D electron, one accounts for the $s=\pm $ 1 - factors in the front of the square root term of the energy. Electronic structure properties of quasi 1D semiconductor heterostructures like InAs quantum wires can then be readi…
Electric dipole spin resonance is studied theoretically at a shallow donor formed in a nanowire with spin-orbit coupling in a magnetic field. Such system may represent a donor-based qubit. The single discrete energy level of the donor is accompanied by the set of continuum states, which provide a non-trivial interplay for the picture of electric dipole spin resonance driven by an external monochromatic field. Strongly nonlinear dependencies of spin flip time as well as of the coordinate mean values on the electric field amplitude are observed, demonstrating the significance of coupling to the …
We present a theoretical study of the interplay between topological p-wave superconductivity, orbital magnetic fields and quantum Hall phases in coupled wire systems. First, we calculate the phase diagram and physical observables of a fermionic ladder made of two coupled Kitaev chains, and discuss the presence of two and four Majorana zero modes. Second, we analyze hybrid systems consisting of a Kitaev chain coupled to a Luttinger liquid. By tuning the magnetic field and the carrier density, we identify quantum Hall and charge density wave phases, as well as regimes in which superconductivity …
We report the experimental observation of quantized conductance by Rashba bands at the surface of 50-nm Bi nanowires. With increasing magnetic fields along the wire axis, the wires exhibit a stepwise increase of conductance with as many as four distinct plateaus together with oscillatory thermopower. The observations can be accounted for by the increase of the number of propagating surface modes. The modes have very high mobility and are associated with Aharonov-Bohm interference around the perimeter consistently with theory of quasiballistic one-dimensional nanowires considering that Lorentz …
By means of a multiband effective mass Hamiltonian, a theoretical characterization of the effect of the geometrical features of the confinement profile --in particular, a longitudinal groove-- on the subbands dispersion and spin-related properties of a rectangular HgTe/CdTe nanowire is presented. Through an external electric field applied perpendicular to the wire, the interplay of the induced Rashba spin splitting and these geometrical features is investigated. It is found that by exploiting this interplay a rich complexity of the subband structure arises, permitting the generation and modula…
We extend a special kind of localized state trapped at the intersection due to the geometric confinement, first proposed in a three-terminal-opening T-shaped structure [Euro. Phys. Lett. {\bf 55}, 539 (2001)], into a ring geometry with a tangent connection to the wire. In this ring geometry, there exists one localized state trapped at the intersection with energy lying inside the lowest subband. We systematically study this localized state and the resulting Fano-type interference due to the coupling between this localized state and the continuum ones. It is found that the increase of the inner…
