We have studied both experimentally and theoretically the reprogrammable spin wave band structure in Permalloy(10nm)/Cu(5nm)/Permalloy(30nm) nanowire arrays of width w=280 nm and inter-wire separation in the range from 80 to 280 nm. We found that, depending on the inter-wire separation, the anti-parallel configuration, where the magnetizations of the two Permalloy layers point in opposite directions, is stabilized over specific magnetic field ranges thus enabling us to directly compare the band structure with that of the parallel alignment. We show that collective spin waves of the Bloch type propagate through the arrays with different magnonic bandwidths as a consequence of the interplay between the intra- and inter-nanowire dynamic dipolar interactions. A detailed understanding, e.g. whether they have a stationary or propagating character, is achieved by considering the phase relation (in-phase or out-of-phase) between the dynamic magnetizations in the two ferromagnetic layers and their average value. This work opens the path to magnetic field-controlled reconfigurable layered magnonic crystals that can be used for future nanoscale magnon spintronic devices.
We investigate experimentally and theoretically the magnetization reversal process in one-dimensional magnonic structures composed of permalloy nanowires of the two different widths and finite length arranged in a periodic and quasiperiodic order. The main features of the hysteresis loop are determined by different shape anisotropies of the component elements and the dipolar interactions between them. We showed, that the dipolar interactions between nanowires forming a ribbon can be controlled by change a distance between the neighboring ribbons. The quasiperiodic order can influence the hyste…
Nanoscale magnetic systems have been studied extensively in various geometries, such as wires of different cross-sections, arrays of wires, dots, rings, etc. Such systems have interesting physical properties and promising applications in advanced magnetic devices. Uniform magnetic nanowires are the basic structures which were broadly investigated. However, some of their dynamical properties, like: (anti)crossing between the spin wave modes and impact of the magnetic field on spin wave spectrum, still need to be exploited. We continue this research by investigation of the spin wave dynamics in …
An analytical model of the spin-diode effect induced by resonant spin-transfer torque in a ferromagnetic bilayer with strong dipolar coupling provides the resonance frequencies and the lineshapes of the magnetic field spectra obtained under field or laser-light modulation. The effect of laser irradiation is accounted for by introducing the temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization and anisotropy, as well as thermal spin-transfer torques. The predictions of the model are compared with experimental data obtained with single Co/Cu/Co spin valves, embedded in nanowires and produced by…
We theoretically investigate the interlayer dipolar and exchange couplings for an array of metallic magnetic nanowires grown on top of an extended ultrathin yttrium iron garnet film. The calculated interlayer dipolar coupling agrees with observed anticrossings [Chen \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{120}, 217202 (2018)], concluding that the interlayer exchange coupling is suppressed by a spacer layer between the nanowires and film. The Kittel mode in the nanowire array couples chirally to spin waves in the film, even though Damon-Eshbach surface modes do not exist. The chirality is suppr…
We investigate the Rabi oscillations decay of a spin decohered by a spin bath whose internal dynamics is caused by dipolar coupling between the bath spins. The decay form and rate as a function of the intra-bath coupling is studied analytically, and confirmed numerically. The decay in general has neither exponential/Gaussian or power-law form, and changes non-monotonically with the intra-bath coupling, decelerating for both slow and fast baths. The form and rate of Rabi oscillations decay can be used to experimentally determine the intra-bath coupling strength for a broad class of solid-state …
We study theoretically the low-energy hole states of Ge/Si core/shell nanowires. The low-energy valence band is quasidegenerate, formed by two doublets of different orbital angular momenta, and can be controlled via the relative shell thickness and via external fields. We find that direct (dipolar) coupling to a moderate electric field leads to an unusually large spin-orbit interaction of Rashba type on the order of meV which gives rise to pronounced helical states enabling electrical spin control. The system allows for quantum dots and spin qubits with energy levels that can vary from nearly …
We report a theory for the coherent and incoherent chiral pumping of spin waves into thin magnetic films through the dipolar coupling with a local magnetic transducer, such as a nanowire. The ferromagnetic resonance of the nanowire is broadened by the injection of unidirectional spin waves that generate a non-equilibrium magnetization in only half of the film. A temperature gradient between the local magnet and film leads to a unidirectional flow of incoherent magnons, i.e., a chiral spin Seebeck effect.
We investigate the effect of electron-electron interactions on proximity-induced $s$-wave superconductivity in one-dimensional nanowires. We treat the interactions on a self-consistent mean-field level, and find an analytic expression for the effective pairing potential in the presence of interactions, valid for a weakly tunnel coupled wire. We show that for a set of two nanowires placed in parallel on a superconducting substrate, the interaction-induced reduction of the pairing energy could result in the effective interwire pairing potential exceeding the intrawire potential, which is one of …
Metallic barcode nanowires (BNWs) composed of repeating heterogeneous segments fabricated by template-assisted electrodeposition can offer extended functionality in magnetic, electrical, mechanical, and biomedical applications. We can consider such nanostructures as a three-dimensional system of magnetically interacting elements with magnetic behavior strongly affected by complex magnetostatic interactions. This study discusses the influence of geometrical parameters of segments on the character of their interactions and the overall magnetic behavior of the array of BNWs having alternating mag…

We propose a scheme to generate pairs of time-reversal invariant parafermions. Our setup consists of two quantum wires with opposite Rashba spin orbit interactions coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor, in the presence of electron-electron interactions. The zero-energy bound states localized at the wire ends arise from the interplay between two types of proximity induced superconductivity: the usual intrawire superconductivity and the interwire superconductivity due to crossed Andreev reflections. If the latter dominates, which is the case for strong electron-electron interactions, the system …
The interaction between transverse magnetic domain walls (TDWs) in planar (2D) and cylindrical (3D) nanowires is examined using micromagnetic simulations. We show that in perfect and surface deformed wires the free TDWs behave differently, as the 3D TDWs combine into metastable states with average lifetimes of 300ns depending on roughness, while the 2D TDWs do not due to 2D shape anisotropy. When the 2D and 3D TDWs are pinned at artificial constrictions, they behave similarly as they interact mainly through the dipolar field. This magnetostatic interaction is well described by the point charge…
Free-standing, interconnected metallic nanowire networks with density as low as 40 mg/cm^{3} have been achieved over cm-scale areas, using electrodeposition into polycarbonate membranes that have been ion-tracked at multiple angles. Networks of interconnected magnetic nanowires further provide an exciting platform to explore 3-dimensional nanomagnetism, where their structure, topology and frustration may be used as additional degrees of freedom to tailor the materials properties. New magnetization reversal mechanisms in cobalt networks are captured by the first-order reversal curve method, whi…
A magnon spin-orbit coupling, induced by the dipole-dipole interaction, is derived in monoclinic-stacked bilayer honeycomb spin lattice with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling. Linear crossings are predicted in the magnon spectrum around the band minimum in G valley, as well as in the high frequency range around the zone boundary. The linear crossings in K and K' valleys, which connect the acoustic and optical bands, can be gapped when the intralayer dipole-dipole or Kitaev interactions exceed the interlayer dipole-dipole interaction, resulting in a pha…
We study intragap bound states in the topological phase of a Rashba nanowire in the presence of a magnetic field and with non-uniform spin orbit interaction (SOI) and proximity-induced superconductivity gap. We show that fermionic bound states (FBS) can emerge inside the proximity gap. They are localized at the junction between two wire sections characterized by different directions of the SOI vectors, and they coexist with Majorana bound states (MBS) localized at the nanowire ends. The energy of the FBS is determined by the angle between the SOI vectors and the lengthscale over which the SOI …
Hybrid superconductor-semiconducting nanowire devices provide an ideal platform to investigating novel intragap bound states, such as the Andreev bound states (ABSs), Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states, and the Majorana bound states. The competition between Kondo correlations and superconductivity in Josephson quantum dot (QD) devices results in two different ground states and the occurrence of a 0-$π$ quantum phase transition. Here we report on transport measurements on hybrid superconductor-InSb nanowire QD devices with different device geometries. We demonstrate a realization of continuous gate-…
We have measured the terahertz response of oriented germanium nanowires using ultrafast optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy. We present results on the time, frequency, and polarization dependence of the terahertz response. Our results indicate intraband energy relaxation times of photoexcited carriers in the 1.5-2.0 ps range, carrier density dependent interband electron-hole recombination times in the 75-125 ps range, and carrier momentum scattering rates in the 60-90 fs range. Additionally, the terahertz response of the nanowires is strongly polarization dependent despite the subwavelen…
Gallium nitride nanowire and nanorod substrates with different morphology are prospective platforms allowing to control the local strain distribution in graphene films top of them, resulting in an induction of pseudomagnetic fields. Atomic force microscopy measurements performed in a HybriD mode complemented by scanning electron microscopy allow for a detailed visualization of the strain distribution on graphene surface. Graphene in direct contact with supporting regions is tensile strained, while graphene located in-between is characterized by lower strain. Characteristic tensile strained wri…
We consider dipolar interactions between heteronuclear molecules in a low-dimensional setup consisting of two one-dimensional tubes. We demonstrate that attraction between molecules in different tubes can overcome intratube repulsion and complexes with several molecules in the same tube are stable. In situ detection schemes of the few-body complexes are proposed. We discuss extensions to the case of many tubes and layers, and outline the implications of our results on many-body physics.
Dipolar (or spatially indirect) excitons (IXs) in semiconductor double quantum well (DQW) subjected to an electric field are neutral species with a dipole moment oriented perpendicular to the DQW plane. Here, we theoretically study interactions between IXs in stacked DQW bilayers, where the dipolar coupling can be either attractive or repulsive depending on the relative positions of the particles. By using microscopic band structure calculations to determine the electronic states forming the excitons, we show that the attractive dipolar interaction between stacked IXs deforms their electronic …

Antiferromagnets (AFMs) are widely believed to be superior than ferromagnets in spintronics because of their high stability due to the vanishingly small stray field. It is thus expected that the order parameter of AFM should always align along the easy-axis of the crystalline anisotropy. In contrast to this conventional wisdom, we find that the AFM order parameter switches away from the easy-axis below a critical anisotropy strength when an AFM is properly tailored into a nano-structure. The switching time first decreases and then increases with the damping. Above the critical anisotropy, the …

We study the electric-dipole transitions for a single electron in a double quantum dot located in a semiconductor nanowire. Enabled by spin-orbit coupling (SOC), electric-dipole spin resonance (EDSR) for such an electron can be generated via two mechanisms: the SOC-induced intradot pseudospin states mixing and the interdot spin-flipped tunneling. The EDSR frequency and strength are determined by these mechanisms together. For both mechanisms the electric-dipole transition rates are strongly dependent on the external magnetic field. Their competition can be revealed by increasing the magnetic f…
We study a double-nanowire setup proximity coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor and search for the bulk signatures of the topological phase transition that can be observed experimentally, for example, with an STM tip. Three bulk quantities, namely, the charge, the spin polarization, and the pairing amplitude of intrawire superconductivity are studied in this work. The spin polarization and the pairing amplitude flip sign as the system undergoes a phase transition from the trivial to the topological phase. In order to identify promising ways to observe bulk signatures of the phase transition i…
We demonstrate that CPMG and XYXY decoupling sequences with non-ideal $π$ pulses can reduce dipolar interactions between spins of the same species in solids. Our simulations of pulsed electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments show that $π$ rotations with small ($<$~10\%) imperfections refocus instantaneous diffusion. Here, the intractable N-body problem of interacting dipoles is approximated by the average evolution of a single spin in a changing mean field. These calculations agree well with experiments and do not require powerful hardware. Our results add to past attempts to explain similar …
We consider dipolar interactions between heteronuclear molecules in low-dimensional geometries. The setup consists of two one-dimensional tubes. We study the stability of possible few-body complexes in the regime of repulsive intratube interaction, where the binding arises from intertube attraction. The stable dimers, trimers, and tetramers are found and we discuss their properties for both bosonic and fermionic molecules. To observe these complexes we propose an optical non-destructive detection scheme that enables in-situ observation of the creation and dissociation of the few-body complexes…

Core-shell GaAs-based nanowires monolithically integrated on Si constitute a promising class of nanostructures that could enable light emitters for fast inter- and intrachip optical connections. We introduce and fabricate a novel coaxial GaAs/(In,Ga)As dot-in-a-well nanowire heterostructure to reach spontaneous emission in the Si transparent region, which is crucial for applications in Si photonics. Specifically, we achieve room temperature emission at 1.27 $μ$m in the telecommunication O band. The presence of quantum dots in the heterostructure is evidenced by a structural analysis based on s…
Controlled assembly of single-crystal, colloidal maghemite nanoparticles is facilitated via a high-temperature polyol-based pathway. Structural characterization shows that size-tunable nanoclusters of 50 and 86 nm diameters (D), with high dispersibility in aqueous media, are composed of $\sim$ 13 nm (d) crystallographically oriented nanoparticles. The interaction effects are examined against the increasing volume fraction, $ϕ$, of the inorganic magnetic phase that goes from individual colloidal nanoparticles ($ϕ$= 0.47) to clusters ($ϕ$= 0.72). The frozen-liquid dispersions of the latter exhib…
We present a theoretical analysis of Dirac magneto-plasmons in topological insulator nanowires. We discuss a cylindrical geometry where Berry phase effects induce the opening of a gap at the neutrality point. By taking into account surface electron wave functions introduced in previous papers and within the random phase approximation, we provide an analytical form of the dynamic structure factor. Dispersions and spectral weights of Dirac plasmons are studied with varying the radius of the cylinder, the surface doping, and the strength of an external magnetic field. We show that, at zero surfac…
Magnonic quasicrystals exceed the possibilities of spin wave (SW) manipulation offered by regular magnonic crystals, because of their more complex SW spectra with fractal characteristics. Here, we report the direct x-ray microscopic observation of propagating SWs in a magnonic quasicrystal, consisting of dipolarly coupled permalloy nanowires arranged in a one-dimensional Fibonacci sequence. SWs from the first and second band as well as evanescent waves from the band gap between them are imaged. Moreover, additional mini-band gaps in the spectrum are demonstrated, directly indicating an influen…
The most direct approach for characterizing the quantum dynamics of a strongly-interacting system is to measure the time-evolution of its full many-body state. Despite the conceptual simplicity of this approach, it quickly becomes intractable as the system size grows. An alternate framework is to think of the many-body dynamics as generating noise, which can be measured by the decoherence of a probe qubit. Our work centers on the following question: What can the decoherence dynamics of such a probe tell us about the many-body system? In particular, we utilize optically addressable probe spins …
The coupling between electronic spins and lattice vibrations is fundamental for driving relaxation in magnetic materials. The debate over the nature of spin-phonon coupling dates back to the 40's, but the role of spin-spin, spin-orbit and hyperfine interactions, has never been fully established. Here we present a comprehensive study of the spin dynamics of a crystal of Vanadyl-based molecular qubits by means of first-order perturbation theory and first-principles calculations. We quantitatively determine the role of the Zeeman, hyperfine and electronic spin dipolar interactions in the direct m…
Signatures of electric field and layer separation effects on the spin-valley physics of MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterobilayers: from energy bands to dipolar excitons
Two dimensional materials and their heterostructures constitute a promising platform to study correlated electronic states as well as many body physics of excitons. Here, we present experiments that unite these hitherto separate efforts and show how excitons that are dynamically screened by itinerant electrons to form exciton-polarons, can be used as a spectroscopic tool to study interaction-induced incompressible states of electrons. The MoSe$_2$/hBN/MoSe$_2$ heterostructure that we study exhibits a long-period Moiré superlattice as evidenced by coherent-hole tunneling mediated avoided crossi…
A leading nonlinear effect in magnonics is the interaction that splits a high-frequency magnon into two low-frequency ones with conserved linear momentum. Here, we report experimental observation of nonlocal three-magnon scattering between spatially separated magnetic systems, viz. a CoFeB nanowire and an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin film. Above a certain threshold power of an applied microwave field, a CoFeB Kittel magnon splits into a pair of counter-propagating YIG magnons that induce voltage signals in Pt electrodes on each side, in excellent agreement with model calculations based on th…
The ability to engineer the interactions in assemblies of nanoscale magnets is central to the development of artificial spin systems and spintronic technologies. Following the emergence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in thin film magnetism, new routes have been opened to couple the nanomagnets via strong chiral interactions, which is complementary to the established dipolar and exchange coupling mechanisms. In this Perspective, we review recent progress in the engineering of synthetic magnets coupled by the interlayer and intralayer DMI. We show how multilayer chiral magnetic s…
