We consider a one-dimensional system combining local magnetic moments and a delocalized metallic band on top of a superconducting substrate. This system can describe a chain of magnetic impurities with both localized polarized orbitals and delocalized s-like orbitals or a conducting wire with embedded magnetic impurities. We study the interplay between the one-dimensional Shiba band physics arising from the interplay between magnetic moments and the substrate and the delocalized wire-like conduction band on top of the superconductor. We derive an effective low-energy Hamiltonian in terms of two coupled asymmetric Kitaev-like Hamiltonians and analyze its topological properties. We have found that this system can host multiple Majorana bound states at its extremities provided a magnetic mirror symmetry is present. We compute the phase diagram of the system depending on the magnetic exchange interactions, the impurity distance and especially the coupling between both bands. In presence of inhomogeneities which typically break this magnetic mirror symmetry, we show that the coexistence of a Shiba and wire delocalized topological band can drive the system into a non-topological regime with a splitting of Majorana bound states.
We study the renormalization of the gap of an s-wave superconductor in the presence of two magnetic impurities. For weakly bound Shiba states, we analytically calculate the part of the gap renormalization that is sensitive to the relative orientation of the two impurity spins. For impurities with a strong exchange coupling to the conduction electrons, we solve the gap equation self-consistently by numerics and find that the sub-gap Shiba state turns into a supra-gap Andreev state when the local gap parameter changes sign under the impurities.
Recent experimental studies have found that magnetic impurities deposited on superconducting monolayer NbSe$_2$ generate coupled Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states. Here we consider ferromagnetic chains of impurities which induce a Yu-Shiba-Rusinov band and harbor Majorana bound states at the chain edges. We show that these topological phases are stabilized by strong Ising spin-orbit coupling in the monolayer and examine the conditions under which Majorana phases appear as a function of distance between impurities, impurity spin projection, orientation of chains on the surface of the monolayer, and…
A characteristic feature of Shiba impurities is the existence of a spin- and parity-changing quantum phase transition (known as "0-$π$" transition) which has been observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and transport experiments. Using the Abelian bosonization technique, here we analyze the ground-state properties and the quantum phase diagram of a classical (i.e., Ising-like) Shiba impurity. In particular, we analyze the cases of an impurity in a three- and a one-dimensional superconductor. Within the bosonization framework, the ground-state properties are determined by simple soliton…
We show that a chain of nonmagnetic impurities deposited on a fully gapped two- or three-dimensional superconductor can become a topological one-dimensional superconductor with protected Majorana bound states at its end. A prerequisite is that the pairing potential of the underlying superconductor breaks the spin-rotation symmetry, as it is generically the case in systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. We illustrate this mechanism for a spinless triplet-superconductor p+ip and a time-reversal symmetric Rashba superconductor with a mixture of singlet and triplet pairing. For the latter, we sh…
Magnetic impurities in $s$-wave superconductors lead to spin-polarized Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) in-gap states. Chains of magnetic impurities offer one of the most viable routes for the realization of Majorana bound states which hold a promise for topological quantum computing. However, this ambitious goal looks distant since no quantum coherent degrees of freedom have yet been identified in these systems. To fill this gap we propose an effective two-level system, a YSR qubit, stemming from two nearby impurities. Using a time-dependent wave-function approach, we derive an effective Hamiltonian de…
We discuss all the characteristics of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states for clusters of impurities with classical magnetic moments in a superconducting substrate with s-wave symmetry. We consider the effect of the multiorbital structure of the impurities and the effect of the crystal field splitting. We solve the problem exactly and calculate the subgap Green's function, which has poles at the energies of the Shiba states and defines the local density of states associated to their wave functions. For the case of impurities sufficiently separated, we derive an effective Hamiltonian to describe the hybrid…
Conventional superconductors disordered by magnetic impurities demonstrate physical properties drastically different from their pristine counterparts. In our previous work [Phys. Rev. B 92, 245430 (2015)] we explored spectral and thermodynamic properties of such systems for two extreme cases: completely random and ferromagnetically aligned impurity magnetic moments. Here we consider transport properties of these systems, and show that they have a potential to be used in superconducting spintronic devices. Each magnetic impurity contributes a Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound state to the spectrum, …
We theoretically study the spectrum induced by one and two magnetic impurities near the boundary of a one-dimensional nanowire in proximity to a conventional $s$-wave superconductor and extract the ground state magnetic configuration. We show that the energies of the subgap states, supported by the magnetic impurities, are strongly affected by the boundary for distances less than the superconducting coherence length. In particular, when the impurity is moved towards the boundary, multiple quantum phase transitions periodically occur in which the parity of the superconducting condensate oscilla…
Employing analytical methods and quantum transport simulations we investigate the relaxation of quasiparticle spins in graphene proximitized by an $s$-wave superconductor in the presence of resonant magnetic and spin-orbit active impurities. Off resonance, the relaxation increases with decreasing temperature when electrons scatter off magnetic impurities---the Hebel-Slichter effect---and decreases when impurities have spin-orbit coupling. This distinct temperature~dependence (not present in the normal state) uniquely discriminates between the two scattering mechanisms. However, we show that th…
We theoretically consider a quantum magnetic impurity coupled to a superconductor, and obtain the local density of states at the position of the impurity taking into account the effect of spin-fluctuations and single-ion magnetic anisotropy. We particularly focus on the spectrum of subgap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR or Shiba) states induced by a quantum impurity with easy- or hard-axis uniaxial anisotropy. Although this is a relevant experimental situation in, e.g., magnetic adatoms on the surface of clean metals, it is customary that theoretical descriptions assume a classical-spin approximation wh…
In superconductors, magnetic impurities induce a pair-breaking potential for Cooper pairs, which locally affects the Bogoliubov quasiparticles and gives rise to Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR or Shiba, in short) bound states in the density of states (DoS). These states carry information on the magnetic coupling strength of the impurity with the superconductor, which determines the many-body ground state properties of the system. Recently, the interest in Shiba physics was boosted by the prediction of topological superconductivity and Majorana modes in magnetically coupled chains and arrays of Shiba imp…
Regular arrays of magnetic atoms on a superconductor provide a promising platform for topological superconductivity. In this work we study effects of disorder in these systems, focusing on vacancies realized by missing magnetic atoms. We develop approaches that allow treatment of ferromagnetic dense chains as well as long-range hopping ferromagnetic and helical Shiba chains at arbitrary subgap energies. Vacancies in magnetic chains play an analogous role to magnetic impurities in a clean $s$-wave superconductor. A single vacancy in a topological chain gives rise to a low-lying "anti-Shiba" sta…
Recently, it has been suggested that topological superconductivity and Majorana end states can be realized in a chain of magnetic impurities on the surface of an s-wave superconductor when the magnetic moments form a spin helix as a result of the RKKY interaction mediated by the superconducting substrate. Here, we investigate this scenario theoretically by developing a tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes description starting from the Shiba bound states induced by the individual magnetic impurities. While the resulting model Hamiltonian has similarities with the Kitaev model for one-dimensional …
Theoretical descriptions of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states induced by magnetic impurities inside the gap of a superconductor typically rely on a classical spin model or are restricted to spin-1/2 quantum spins. These models fail to account for important aspects of YSR states induced by transition-metal impurities, including the effects of higher quantum spins coupled to several conduction-electron channels, crystal or ligand-field effects, and magnetic anisotropy. We introduce and explore a zero-bandwidth model, which incorporates these aspects, is readily solved numerically, and analytically t…
Magnetic impurities on a superconductor induce sub-gap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states, localized at the impurity site and fading away from it for distances up to several nanometers. In this article, we present a theoretical method to calculate the spatial distribution of the YSR spectrum of a two-dimensional superconductor with arbitrary Fermi contours (FCs) in the presence of magnetic impurities. Based on the Green's Function (GF) formalism, we obtain a general analytical expression by approximating an arbitrary contour shape to a regular polygon. This method allows us to show the connec…
Shiba bands formed by overlapping Yu-Shiba-Rusinov subgap states in magnetic impurities on a superconductor play an important role in topological superconductors. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the existence of a new type of Shiba bands (dubbed topological Shiba metal) on a magnetically doped $s$-wave superconducting surface with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the presence of a weak in-plane magnetic field. Such topological gapless Shiba bands develop from gapped Shiba bands through Lifshitz phase transitions accompanied by second-order quantum phase transitions for the intrinsic thermal Ha…
We demonstrate the formation of robust zero energy modes close to magnetic impurities in the iron-based superconductor FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$. We find that the Zeeman field generated by the impurity favors a spin-triplet inter-orbital pairing as opposed to the spin-singlet intra-orbital pairing prevalent in the bulk. The preferred spin-triplet pairing preserves time-reversal symmetry and is topological, as robust, topologically-protected zero modes emerge at the boundary between regions with different pairing states. Moreover, the zero modes form Kramers doublets that are insensitive to the direct…
We study the sensitivity of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states, bound states that form around magnetic scatterers in superconductors, to the presence of nonmagnetic disorder in both two and three dimensional systems. We formulate a scattering approach to this problem and reduce the effects of disorder to two contributions: disorder-induced normal reflection and a random phase of the amplitude for Andreev reflection. We find that both of these are small even for moderate amounts of disorder. In the dirty limit in which the disorder-induced mean free path is smaller than the superconducting coherence lengt…
Magnetic impurities inserted in a $s$-wave superconductor give rise to spin-polarized in-gap states called Shiba states. We study the back-action of these induced states on the dynamics of the classical moments. We show that the Shiba state pertains to both reactive and dissipative torques acting on the precessing classical spin that can be detected through ferromagnetic resonance measurements. Moreover, we highlight the influence of the bulk states as well as the effect of the finite linewidth of the Shiba state on the magnetization dynamics. Finally, we demonstrate that the torques are a dir…
Hybrid semiconductor-superconductor quantum dot devices are tunable physical realizations of quantum impurity models for a magnetic impurity in a superconducting host. The binding energy of the localized sub-gap Shiba states is set by the gate voltages and external magnetic field. In this work we discuss the effects of the Zeeman spin splitting which is generically present both in the quantum dot and in the (thin-film) superconductor. The unequal $g$-factors in semiconductor and superconductor materials result in respective Zeeman splittings of different magnitude. We consider both classical a…
A magnetic atomic impurity inside a superconductor locally distorts superconductivity. They scatter Cooper pairs as a potential with broken time-reversal symmetry, what leads to localized bound states with subgap excitation energies, named hereon Shiba states. Most conventional approaches to study Shiba states treat magnetic impurities as point scatterers with an isotropic exchange interaction, while the complex internal structure of magnetic impurities is usually neglected. Here, we show that the number and the shape of Shiba states are correlated to the spin-polarized atomic orbitals of the …
Chains of magnetic impurities placed on a superconducting substrate and forming helical spin order provide a promising venue for realizing a topological superconducting phase. An effective tight-binding description of such helical Shiba chains involves long-range (power-law) hopping and pairing amplitudes which induce an unconventional topological critical point. At the critical point, we find exponentially localized Majorana bound states with a short localization length unrelated to a topological gap. Away from the critical point, this exponential decay develops a power-law tail. Our analytic…
The hybridization of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states in dimers of magnetic impurities leads to molecular-like bonding and antibonding modes. In many-impurity systems, the interaction gives rise to YSR bands and can even result in the formation of a topologically non-trivial superconducting state, characterized by Majorana fermions at the edges of the system. To obtain a more detailed understanding of these interactions, we investigate the coupling of YSR states in short one-dimensional Fe chains on clean Nb(110). We observe a splitting of the single-atom YSR peaks into multiple states with even or odd…
We introduce three new analytical and semi-analytical tools that allow one to determine the topological character of impurity Shiba chains. The analytical methods are based on calculating the effective Green's function of an infinite embedded chain using the T-matrix formalism and describing the chain as a {\it line impurity}. We thus provide a solution to the longstanding size-effects problem affecting the only general alternative method, the numerical tight-binding analysis. As an example we consider a chain of magnetic impurities deposited on an s-wave superconducting substrate with Rashba …
We study the properties of collective Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states generated by multiple magnetic adatoms (clusters) placed on the surface of a superconductor. For magnetic clusters with equal distances between their constituents, we demonstrate the formation of effectively spin-unpolarized YSR states with subgap energies independent of the spin configuration of the magnetic impurities. We solve the problem analytically for arbitrary spin structure and analyze both spin-polarized (dispersive energy levels) and spin-unpolarized (pinned energy levels) solutions. While the energies of the spin-p…
Magnetic impurities have a dramatic effect on superconductivity by breaking the time-reversal symmetry and inducing so-called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) low energy bound states within the superconducting gap. The spatial extent of YSR states is greatly enhanced in 2D systems, which should facilitate the formation of coupled states. Here, we observe YSR states on single cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPC) molecules on a 2D superconductor NbSe$_2$ using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). We use STM lateral manipulation to create controlled CoPc dimers and demonstrat…
Atomic defects have a significant impact in the low-energy properties of graphene systems. By means of first-principles calculations and tight-binding models we provide evidence that chemical impurities modify both the normal and the superconducting states of twisted bilayer graphene. A single hydrogen atom attached to the bilayer surface yields a triple-point crossing, whereas self-doping and three-fold symmetry-breaking are created by a vacant site. Both types of defects lead to time-reversal symmetry-breaking and the creation of local magnetic moments. Hydrogen-induced magnetism is found to…
A magnetic impurity in a fermionic superfluid hosts bound quasiparticle states known as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. We argue here that, if the impurity is mobile (i.e., has a finite mass), the impurity and its bound YSR quasiparticle move together as a midgap molecule, which has an unusual "Mexican-hat" dispersion that is tunable via the fermion density. We map out the impurity dispersion, which consists of an "atomic" branch (in which the impurity is dressed by quasiparticle pairs) and a "molecular" branch (in which the impurity binds a quasiparticle). We discuss the experimental realizati…
Chains of magnetic atoms placed on the surface of an s-wave superconductor with large spin-orbit coupling provide a promising platform for the realization of topological superconducting states characterized by the presence of Majorana zero-energy modes. In this work we study the properties of the one-dimensional chain of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states induced by magnetic impurities using a realistic model for the magnetic atoms that include the presence of multiple scattering channels. These channels are mixed by the spin-orbit coupling and, via the hybridization of the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states at dif…
Bilayer graphene has two non-equivalent sublattices and, therefore, the same adatom impurity can manifest in spectrally distinct ways-sharp versus broad resonances near the charge neutrality-depending on the sublattice it adsorbs at. Employing Green's function analytical methods and the numerical Kwant package we investigate the spectral and transport interplay between the resonances and superconducting coherence induced in bilayer graphene by proximity to an s-wave superconductor. Analyzing doping and temperature dependencies of quasi-particle spin-relaxation rates, energies of Yu-Shiba-Rusin…
We analyze the phase diagram associated with a pair of magnetic impurities trapped in a superconducting host. The natural interplay between Kondo screening, superconductivity and exchange interactions leads to a rich array of competing phases, whose transitions are characterized by discontinuous changes of the total spin. Our analysis is based on a combination of numerical renormalization group techniques as well as semi-classical analytics. In addition to the expected screened and unscreened phases, we observe a new molecular doublet phase where the impurity spins are only partially screened …
Superconductors containing magnetic impurities exhibit intriguing phenomena derived from the competition between Cooper pairing and Kondo screening. At the heart of this competition are the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (Shiba) states which arise from the pair breaking effects a magnetic impurity has on a superconducting host. Hybrid superconductor-molecular junctions offer unique access to these states but the added complexity in fabricating such devices has kept their exploration to a minimum. Here, we report on the successful integration of a model spin 1/2 impurity, in the form of a neutral and stable …
Motivated by recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on single magnetic impurities on superconducting surfaces, we present here a comprehensive theoretical study of the interplay between Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states and (multiple) Andreev reflections. Our theory is based on a combination of an Anderson model with broken spin degeneracy and nonequilibrium Green's function techniques that allows us to describe the electronic transport through a magnetic impurity coupled to superconducting leads for arbitrary junction transparency. Using this combination we are able to elucidate the dif…
The electron transport through the parabolic quantum wire placed in longitudinal magnetic field in the presence of the system of short-range impurities inside the wire is investigated. Using approach based on the zero-range potential theory we obtained an exact formula for the transmission coefficient of the electron through the wire that allows to calculate such the transport characteristics as the conductance and differential thermopower. The dependencies of conductance and thermopower on the chemical potential and magnetic field are investigated. The effect of elastic scattering due to shor…
We calculate the density of states for an interacting quantum wire in the presence two impurities of arbitrary potential strength. To perform this calculation, we describe the Coulomb interactions in the wire within the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory. After establishing and solving the Dyson equation for the fermionic retarded Green's functions, we study how the profile of the local density of states is affected by the interactions in the entire range of impurity potentials. Same as in the non-interacting case, when increasing the impurity strength, the central part of the wire becomes more …
The experimental advances in the study of time-dependent phenomena has opened a new path to investigating the complex electronic structure of strongly correlated and topological materials. Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states induced by magnetic impurities in $s$-wave superconductors provide an ideal candidate system to study the response of a system to time-dependent manipulations of the magnetic environment. Here, we show that by imposing a time-dependent change in the magnetic exchange coupling, by changing the relative alignment of magnetic moments in an impurity dimer, or through a periodic driv…
Indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in one dimensional systems is a matter of long discussions since Kittel has established that in the asymptotic limit it decays as the inverse of distance x between the impurities. In this work we investigate this problem in a quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). By employing a second order perturbation theory we find that one additional oscillatory term appears in each of the RKKY, the Dzaloshinkii-Moryia and the Ising couplings. Remarkably, these extra terms resulting from the spin precession of the conduction electrons …

The interplay of a potential and magnetic disorder in superconductors remains an active field of research for decades. Within the framework of the Usadel equation, we study the local density of states near a solitary classical magnetic impurity in a dirty superconducting film. We find that a potential disorder results in broadening of the delta-function in the local density of states at the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) energy. This broadening is proportional to the square root of a normal-state spreading resistance of the film. We demonstrate that mesoscopic fluctuations caused by a potential disord…
In order to probe quantitatively the effect of Kondo impurities on energy exchange between electrons in metals, we have compared measurements on two silver wires with dilute magnetic impurities (manganese) introduced in one of them. The measurement of the temperature dependence of the electron phase coherence time on the wires provides an independent determination of the impurity concentration. Quantitative agreement on the energy exchange rate is found with a theory by Göppert et al. that accounts for Kondo scattering of electrons on spin-1/2 impurities.
Magnetic impurities in a superconductor induce Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states inside the superconducting gap, whose energy depends on the strength of the coupling to the impurity and on the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level. We consider DOS exhibiting a logarithmic or a power-law divergence at the Fermi level due to Van Hove singularities (VHS) and high-order Van Hove singularities (HOVHS), respectively. We find that the energy of the YSR states has the same functional form as in the constant DOS scenario, with the effect of the singularity being an enhancement of the effective couplin…
Local spins coupled to superconductors give rise to several emerging phenomena directly linked to the competition between Cooper pair formation and magnetic exchange. These effects are generally scrutinized using a spectroscopic approach which relies on detecting the in-gap bound modes arising from Cooper pair breaking, the so-called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. However, the impact of local magnetic impurities on the superconducting order parameter remains largely unexplored. Here, we use scanning Josephson spectroscopy to directly visualize the effect of magnetic perturbations on Cooper pai…
There is presently a tremendous activity around the field of topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions. Among the many questions raised, it has become increasingly important to establish the topological or non-topological origin of features associated with Majorana fermions such as zero-bias peaks. Here, we compare in-gap features associated either with isolated magnetic impurities or with magnetic clusters strongly coupled to the atomically thin superconductor Pb/Si(111). We study this system by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS). We take advantage of …
We present a comprehensive theoretical study of thermodynamic properties of superconductors with a dilute concentration of magnetic impurities, with focus on how the properties of the superconducting host change if the magnetic moments of the impurities order ferromagnetically. Scattering off the magnetic impurities leads to the formation of a band of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states within the superconducting energy gap that drastically influences superconductivity. In the magnetically ordered system, the magnetization displays a sudden drop as function of impurity density or magnetic moment amplitude…
It is generally believed that superconductivity only weakly affects the indirect exchange between magnetic impurities. If the distance r between impurities is smaller than than the superconducting coherence length (r < ξ), this exchange is thought to be dominated by RKKY interactions, identical to the those in a normal metallic host. This perception is based upon a perturbative treatment of the exchange interaction. Here, we provide a non-perturbative analysis and demonstrate that the presence of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states induces a strong 1/r^2 anti-ferromagnetic interaction that can domin…
We theoretically consider the effect of a spatially periodic modulation of the superconducting order parameter on the formation of Majorana fermions induced by a one-dimensional system with magnetic impurities brought into close proximity to an $s$-wave superconductor. When the magnetic exchange energy is larger than the inter-impurity electron hopping we model the effective system as a chain of coupled Shiba states. While in the opposite regime, the effective system is accurately described by a quantum wire model. Upon including a spatially modulated superconducting pairing, we find, for suff…
In this work we investigate Majorana correlations in quantum impurities coupled to a topological superconducting wire. By employing a density matrix renormalization group approach, we have calculated the Majorana correlation functions in the ground state of the system for different positions of the impurities along the wire. We observe that the correlations decreases exponentially with the distance between the impurities and the ends of the wire. Moreover, different electron-electron interactions on the wire and on the impurities were also analyzed, and the results showed a stronger effect as …
We study the spin-resolved spectral properties of the impurity states associated to the presence of magnetic impurities in two-dimensional, as well as one-dimensional systems with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We focus on Shiba bound states in superconducting materials, as well as on impurity states in metallic systems. Using a combination of a numerical T-matrix approximation and a direct analytical calculation of the bound state wave function, we compute the local density of states (LDOS) together with its Fourier transform (FT). We find that the FT of the spin-polarized LDOS, a quantity acces…
We review recent experimental progress on the saturation problem in metallic quantum wires. In particular, we address the influence of magnetic impurities on the electron phase coherence time. We also present new measurements of the phase coherence time in ultra-clean gold and silver wires and analyse the saturation of \tauphi in these samples, cognizant of the role of magnetic scattering. For the cleanest samples, Kondo temperatures below 1 mK and extremely-small magnetic-impurity concentration levels of less than 0.08 ppm have to be assumed to attribute the observed saturation to the presenc…
We consider a wire network of ferromagnetic impurities on the surface of an $s$-wave superconductor with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Within the topological phase, zero-energy Majorana fermions appear at wire end-points as well as at junctions between an odd number of wire segments, while no low-energy states are present at junctions between an even number of wire segments, providing strong experimentally accessible signatures for Majorana fermions. We also investigate the quasiparticle energy gap with respect to varying the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and magnetic impurity strength.
We study conductance and spin-polarization fluctuations in one-dimensional wires with spin-5/2 magnetic impurities (Mn). Our tight-binding Green function approach goes beyond mean field thus including s-d exchange-induced spin-flip scattering. In a certain parameter range, we find that spin flip suppresses conductance fluctuations while enhancing spin-polarization fluctuations. More importantly, spin-polarization fluctuations attain a universal value 1/3 for large enough spin flip strengths. This intrinsic spin-polarization fluctuation may pose a severe limiting factor to the realization of st…
We consider the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator with proximity induced superconductivity. A superconductor placed on the top of the topological insulator induces a gap in the surface electron states and gives rise to a long-ranged in-plane antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction. This interaction is frustrated due to strong spin-orbit coupling, decays as $1/r$ for $r<ξ$, where $r$ is the distance between two magnetic impurities and $ξ$ the superconducting coherence length, and dominates over the…
Electronic transport properties of the disordered quantum wires are considered. The disorder is introduced via impurities (point scatterers), distributed uniformly over the two-dimensional strip, which represents a model quantum wire. Incident electrons with a given energy are scattered on impurities and boundaries of the wire. The electron-electron interaction is neglected in the model. In particular, the intermediate regime and the localization regime of transport are studied in more detail in terms of the conductance and statistical properties of S-matrix ensemble for a given incident elect…
We propose a method to probe and control the interactions between an ensemble of magnetic impurities in a superconductor via microwave radiation. Our method relies upon the presence of sub-gap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states associated with the impurities. Depending on the sign of the detuning, radiation generates either a ferro- or antiferromagnetic contribution to the exchange interaction. This contribution can bias the statistics of the random exchange constants stemming from the RKKY interaction. Moreover, by measuring the microwave response at the YSR resonance, one gains information about …
