The electron transport through the parabolic quantum wire placed in longitudinal magnetic field in the presence of the system of short-range impurities inside the wire is investigated. Using approach based on the zero-range potential theory we obtained an exact formula for the transmission coefficient of the electron through the wire that allows to calculate such the transport characteristics as the conductance and differential thermopower. The dependencies of conductance and thermopower on the chemical potential and magnetic field are investigated. The effect of elastic scattering due to short-range impurities on low-temperature conductance and thermopower is studied. It was shown that the character of the electron transport essentially depends on the position of the every scattering center. The presence even isolated impurity leads to destruction of conductance quantization. In some cases it is possible that thermopower can change the sign in dependence on chemical potential and magnetic field.
The quantum corrections to the conductivity and the thermopower in monolayer graphene are studied. We use the recursive Green's function method to calculate numerically the conductivity and the thermopower of graphene. We then analyze these weak localization corrections by fitting with the analytical theory as function of the impurity parameters and the gate potential. As a result of the quantum corrections to the thermopower, we find large magnetothermopower which is shown to provide a very sensitive measure of the size and strength of the impurities. We compare these analytical and numerical…
We study the effect of electron-electron interaction on the transport properties of short clean quantum wires adiabatically connected to reservoirs. Interactions lead to resonances in a multi-channel wire at particular values of the Fermi energy. We investigate in detail the resonance in a two-channel wire. The (negative) conductance correction peaks at the resonance, and decays exponentially as the Fermi energy is tuned away; the resonance width being given by the temperature. Likewise, the thermopower shows a characteristic structure, which is surprisingly well approximated by the so-called …
We consider the effect of electron-electron interaction on the electron transport through a finite length single-mode quantum wire with reflectionless contacts. The two-particle scattering events cannot alter the electric current and therefore we study the effect of three-particle collisions. Within the Boltzmann equation framework, we calculate corrections to the thermopower and conductance to the leading order in the interaction and in the length of wire $L$. We check explicitly that the three-particle collision rate is identically zero in the case of several integrable interaction potential…
Motivated by recent experiments [1-3] we calculate the thermopower of graphene incorporating the energy dependence of various transport scattering times. We find that scattering by screened charged impurities gives a reasonable explanation for the measured thermopower. The calculated thermopower behaves as 1/\sqrt{n} at high densities, but saturates at low densities. We also find that the thermopower scales with normalized temperature T/T_F and does not depend on the impurity densities, but strongly depends on the fine structure constant r_s and the location of the impurities. We discuss the d…
We present a study of electronic transport in individual Bi nanowires of large diameter relative to the Fermi wavelength. Measurements of the resistance and thermopower of intrinsic and Sn-doped Bi wires with various wire diameters, ranging from 150-480 nm, have been carried out over a wide range of temperatures (4-300 K) and magnetic fields (0-14 T). We find that the thermopower of intrinsic Bi wires in this diameter range is positive (type-p) below about 150 K, displaying a peak at around 40 K. In comparison, intrinsic bulk Bi is type-n. Magneto-thermopower effects due to the decrease of sur…
We study transport properties of weakly interacting spinless electrons in one-dimensional single channel quantum wires. The effects of interaction manifest as three-particle collisions due to the severe constraints imposed by the conservation laws on the two-body processes. We focus on short wires where the effects of equilibration on the distribution function can be neglected and collision integral can be treated in perturbation theory. We find that interaction-induced corrections to conductance and thermopower rely on the scattering processes that change number of right- and left-moving elec…
Andreev interferometers, normal metal wires coupled to superconducting loops, display phase coherent changes as the magnetic flux through the superconducting loops is altered. Properties such as the electronic and thermal conductance of these devices have been shown to oscillate symmetrically about zero with a period equal to one superconducting flux quantum, $Φ_o = h/2e$. However, the thermopower of these devices can oscillate symmetrically or antisymmetrically depending on the geometry of the sample, a phenomenon not well understood theoretically. Here we report on thermopower measurements o…
Using a first principles approach to electron transport, we calculate the electrical and thermoelectrical transport properties of a series of molecular wires containing benzo-difuran subunits. We demonstrate that the side groups introduce Fano resonances, the energy of which is changing with the electronegativity of selected atoms in it. We also study the relative effect of single, double or triple bonds along the molecular backbone and find that single bonds yield the highest thermopower, approximately 22$μ$V/K at room temperature, which is comparable with the highest measured values for sing…
We calculate the density of states for an interacting quantum wire in the presence two impurities of arbitrary potential strength. To perform this calculation, we describe the Coulomb interactions in the wire within the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory. After establishing and solving the Dyson equation for the fermionic retarded Green's functions, we study how the profile of the local density of states is affected by the interactions in the entire range of impurity potentials. Same as in the non-interacting case, when increasing the impurity strength, the central part of the wire becomes more …
The effect of scattering of conduction electrons by dynamical spin fluctuations on the thermopower in metals near a thermal phase transition into an antiferromagnetic phase is considered. We are interested in a transition at room temperature, as has been studied in a heterostructure involving layers of IrMn. We show that the electrical resistivity exhibits a narrow but low peak at the transition, which may be difficult to detect on top of the main contributions induced by phonons and impurities. By contrast, the thermopower is found to exhibit a prominent peak both as a function of temperature…
By generalizing the Kubo-Streda formula for calculating electrical conductivities to the thermoelectric coefficients, we theoretically study the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) on the surface of a topological insulator induced by a finite concentration of magnetic impurities. The ANE is found to be modulated by the impurity scattering and thermal fluctuations, simultaneously, and so exhibits rich structures in the energy space. While the anomalous Hall conductivity is half-integer quantized with the Fermi level across the magnetic-impurity-induced gap, the anomalous Nernst signal (ANS) is fully …
Indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in one dimensional systems is a matter of long discussions since Kittel has established that in the asymptotic limit it decays as the inverse of distance x between the impurities. In this work we investigate this problem in a quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). By employing a second order perturbation theory we find that one additional oscillatory term appears in each of the RKKY, the Dzaloshinkii-Moryia and the Ising couplings. Remarkably, these extra terms resulting from the spin precession of the conduction electrons …
We consider a one-dimensional system combining local magnetic moments and a delocalized metallic band on top of a superconducting substrate. This system can describe a chain of magnetic impurities with both localized polarized orbitals and delocalized s-like orbitals or a conducting wire with embedded magnetic impurities. We study the interplay between the one-dimensional Shiba band physics arising from the interplay between magnetic moments and the substrate and the delocalized wire-like conduction band on top of the superconductor. We derive an effective low-energy Hamiltonian in terms of tw…
Interaction between electron and acoustic phonon in an in-plane magnetic field induced gapped quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit interaction is studied. We calculate acoustic phonon limited resistivity ($ρ$) and phonon-drag thermopower ($S_g$) due to two well known mechanisms of electron-phonon interaction namely, deformation potential (DP) and piezoelectric (PE) scattering. In the so called Bloch-Gruneisen temperature limit both $ρ$ and $S_g$ depend on temperature ($T$) in a power law fashion i.e. $ρ$ or $S_g\sim T^{ν_T}$. For resistivity, $ν_T$ takes the value $5$ and $3$ due to DP and PE s…
In order to probe quantitatively the effect of Kondo impurities on energy exchange between electrons in metals, we have compared measurements on two silver wires with dilute magnetic impurities (manganese) introduced in one of them. The measurement of the temperature dependence of the electron phase coherence time on the wires provides an independent determination of the impurity concentration. Quantitative agreement on the energy exchange rate is found with a theory by Göppert et al. that accounts for Kondo scattering of electrons on spin-1/2 impurities.
In this work we investigate Majorana correlations in quantum impurities coupled to a topological superconducting wire. By employing a density matrix renormalization group approach, we have calculated the Majorana correlation functions in the ground state of the system for different positions of the impurities along the wire. We observe that the correlations decreases exponentially with the distance between the impurities and the ends of the wire. Moreover, different electron-electron interactions on the wire and on the impurities were also analyzed, and the results showed a stronger effect as …
Electric and thermoelectric properties of silicene nanoribbons doped with Al and P impurity atoms are investigated theoretically for both antiparallel and parallel orientations of the edge magnetic moments. In the former case, appropriately arranged impurities can lead to a net magnetic moment and thus also to spin thermoelectric effects. In the latter case, in turn, spin thermoelectric effects also occur in the absence of impurities. Numerical results based on ab-initio calculations show that the spin thermopower can be considerably enhanced by the impurities.
Low-temperature thermal conductivity and thermopower of multiwalled carbon nanotubes considered within a bundle of nanotubes are calculated taking into account multiple scattering of electrons on the atoms of impurities (like single carbon atoms) and short-range order regions arising due to a some distribution of the impurities. The calculations are realized on a base of the temperature diagrammatic Feynman techniques and the results of our research are in a good quantitative and qualitative agreement with the corresponding experimental data for multiwalled carbon nanotubes with diameter less …
In an unconventional superconductor, the interplay of scattering off impurities and Andreev processes may lead to different scattering times for electronlike and holelike quasiparticles. Such electron-hole asymmetry appears when the impurity scattering phase shift is intermediate between the Born and unitary limits and leads to an expectation for large thermoelectric effects. Here, we examine the thermoelectric response of a $d$-wave superconductor connected to normal-metal reservoirs under a temperature bias using a fully self-consistent quasiclassical theory. The thermoelectrically induced q…
We consider a wire network of ferromagnetic impurities on the surface of an $s$-wave superconductor with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Within the topological phase, zero-energy Majorana fermions appear at wire end-points as well as at junctions between an odd number of wire segments, while no low-energy states are present at junctions between an even number of wire segments, providing strong experimentally accessible signatures for Majorana fermions. We also investigate the quasiparticle energy gap with respect to varying the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and magnetic impurity strength.
We review recent experimental progress on the saturation problem in metallic quantum wires. In particular, we address the influence of magnetic impurities on the electron phase coherence time. We also present new measurements of the phase coherence time in ultra-clean gold and silver wires and analyse the saturation of \tauphi in these samples, cognizant of the role of magnetic scattering. For the cleanest samples, Kondo temperatures below 1 mK and extremely-small magnetic-impurity concentration levels of less than 0.08 ppm have to be assumed to attribute the observed saturation to the presenc…
We study conductance and spin-polarization fluctuations in one-dimensional wires with spin-5/2 magnetic impurities (Mn). Our tight-binding Green function approach goes beyond mean field thus including s-d exchange-induced spin-flip scattering. In a certain parameter range, we find that spin flip suppresses conductance fluctuations while enhancing spin-polarization fluctuations. More importantly, spin-polarization fluctuations attain a universal value 1/3 for large enough spin flip strengths. This intrinsic spin-polarization fluctuation may pose a severe limiting factor to the realization of st…
We study transport properties of weakly interacting one-dimensional electron systems including on an equal footing thermal equilibration due to three-particle collisions and the effects of large-scale inhomogeneities. We show that equilibration in an inhomogeneous quantum wire is characterized by the competition of interaction processes which reduce the electrons total momentum and such which change the number of right- and left-moving electrons. We find that the combined effect of interactions and inhomogeneities can dramatically increase the resistance of the wire. In addition, we find that …
The thermoelectric voltage of a quantum dot connected to leads is calculated using the scattering R-matrix method. Our approach takes into account a temperature gradient between the contacts beyond the linear regime. We obtain sign changes of the thermopower when varying the temperature or the chemical potential around the resonances. The influence of the coupling strength of the contacts and of the thermoelectric field on the thermoelectric voltage is discussed.
Electronic transport properties of the disordered quantum wires are considered. The disorder is introduced via impurities (point scatterers), distributed uniformly over the two-dimensional strip, which represents a model quantum wire. Incident electrons with a given energy are scattered on impurities and boundaries of the wire. The electron-electron interaction is neglected in the model. In particular, the intermediate regime and the localization regime of transport are studied in more detail in terms of the conductance and statistical properties of S-matrix ensemble for a given incident elect…
We study the energy distribution function of quasiparticles in voltage biased mesoscopic wires in presence of magnetic impurities and applied magnetic field. The system is described by a Boltzmann equation where the collision integral is determined by coupling to spin 1/2 impurities. We derive an effective coupling to a dissipative spin system which is valid well above Kondo temperature in equilibrium or for sufficiently smeared distribution functions in non-equilibrium. For low magnetic field an enhancement of energy relaxation is found whereas for larger magnetic fields the energy relaxation…
The temperature dependence of Coulomb blockade peaks of a one dimensional quantum dot is calculated. The Coulomb interaction is treated microscopically using the Luttinger liquid model. The electron interaction is assumed to be non-homogeneous with a maximum strength near the quantum dot. The conductance peaks show non-analytic power law behaviour induced by the interaction. It is shown that there is a crossover in the power law which is related to the inhomogeneity of the interaction.
We discuss the effect of magnetic impurities on the inelastic scattering and dephasing of electrons. Magnetic impurities mediate the energy exchange between electrons. This mechanism is especially effective at small energy transfers $E$ in the absence of Zeeman splitting, when the two-particle collision integral in the electron kinetic equation has a kernel $K\propto 1/E^2$ in a broad energy range. In a magnetic field, this mechanism is suppressed at $E$ below the Zeeman energy. Simultaneously, the Zeeman splitting of the impurity spin states reduces the electron dephasing rate, thus enhancing…
We have measured in gold wires the energy exchange rate between quasiparticles, the phase coherence time of quasiparticles and the resistance vs. temperature, in order to probe the interaction processes which are relevant at low temperatures. We find that the energy exchange rate is higher than expected from the theory of electron-electron interactions, and that it has a different energy dependence. The dephasing time is constant at temperatures between 8 K and 0.5 K, and it increases below 0.5 K. The magnetoresistance is negative at large field scales, and the resistance decreases logarithmic…
In this paper we will give a short rewiew about the conductance of a mesoscopic waveguide strip with a few impurities. Green-function method is used allowing to treat systems with low number of impurities, not only the completly clean case. Investigating a wire containing Dirac-delta potentials (modelling the impurities) we found that increasing number of impurities can cause a transition of the structure of conductance. The staircase like structure of the clean system vanishes and the conductance of a system containing finite number of impurities located periodically will be determined by the…
We study thermoelectric properties of the system composed of a monoatomic chain on a surface and additional electrode coupled to the chain, which can be an STM tip. In particular, we are interested in thermopower, electric and thermal conductance, Wiedemann-Franz relation and thermoelectric figure of merit, which is a direct measure of the usefulness of the system for applications. We discuss the modifications of the STM wire topography due to temperature gradient between the electrodes. Finally, we also make connection to STM experiment, in which the thermopower has been directly measured, sh…
In this letter we study the coherent electronic transport through a metallic nanowire with magnetic impurities. The spins of these impurities are considered as frozen to mimic a low temperature spin glass phase. The transport properties of the wire are derived from a numerical Landauer technique which provides the conductance of the wire as a function of the disorder configuration. We show that the correlation of conductance between two spin configurations provides a measure of the correlation between these spin configurations. This correlation corresponds to the mean field overlap in the abse…
We investigate strategies for increasing the thermopower of crown-ether-bridged anthraquinones. The novel design feature of these molecules is the presence of either (1) crown-ether or (2) diaza-crown-ether bridges attached to the side of the current-carrying anthraquinone wire. The crown-ether side groups selectively bind alkali- metal cations and when combined with TCNE or TTF dopants, provide a large phase-space for optimising thermoelectric properties. We find that the optimum combination of cations and dopants depends on the temperature range of interest. The thermopowers of both 1 and 2 …
In order to find out if magnetic impurities can mediate interactions between quasiparticles in metals, we have measured the effect of a magnetic field B on the energy distribution function f(E) of quasiparticles in two silver wires driven out-of-equilibrium by a bias voltage U. In a sample showing sharp distributions at B=0, no magnetic field effect is found, whereas in the other sample, rounded distributions at low magnetic field get sharper as B is increased, with a characteristic field proportional to U. Comparison is made with recent calculations of the effect of magnetic-impurities-mediat…
We study the energy relaxation of quasiparticles in voltage biased mesoscopic wires in presence of magnetic impurities. The renormalization of the exchange interaction of Kondo impurities coupled to conduction electrons is extended to the case of a nonequilibrium electron distribution, which is determined self-consistently from a Boltzmann equation with a collision term due to Kondo impurity mediated electron-electron scattering. The approach leads to predictions in quantitative agreement with recent experiments by Pothier et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 3490 (1997)].
We have extracted the phase coherence time $τ_ϕ$ of electronic quasiparticles from the low field magnetoresistance of weakly disordered wires made of silver, copper and gold. In samples fabricated using our purest silver and gold sources, $τ_ϕ$ increases as $T^{-2/3}$ when the temperature $T$ is reduced, as predicted by the theory of electron-electron interactions in diffusive wires. In contrast, samples made of a silver source material of lesser purity or of copper exhibit an apparent saturation of $τ_ϕ$ starting between 0.1 and 1 K down to our base temperature of 40 mK. By implanting mangane…
We analyze the transport properties of two artificial magnetic impurities coupled togethervia a tunable RKKY interaction mediated by conduction electrons of a finite size one dimensional wire. We show that the sign of the RKKY interaction can be controlled by gating the wire. We investigate the interplay between finite size effects and RKKY interaction and found that the two artificial impurities start to interact each-other as soon as the Kondo screening cloud length becomes larger that the length of the wire. This should allow to give a lower experimental estimate of the Kondo screening clou…
Thermoelectric transport coefficients are determined for semiconductor quantum wires with weak thickness fluctuations. Such systems exhibit anomalies in conductance near 1/4 and 3/4 of 2e^2/h on the rising edge to the first conductance plateau, explained by singlet and triplet resonances of conducting electrons with a single weakly bound electron in the wire [T. Rejec, A. Ramsak, and J.H. Jefferson, Phys. Rev. B 62, 12985 (2000)]. We extend this work to study the Seebeck thermopower coefficient and linear thermal conductance within the framework of the Landauer-Buettiker formalism, which also …
We present measurements of the phase coherence time \tauphi in quasi one-dimensional Au/Fe Kondo wires and compare the temperature dependence of \tauphi with a recent theory of inelastic scattering from magnetic impurities (Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 107204 (2004)). A very good agreement is obtained for temperatures down to 0.2 $T_K$. Below the Kondo temperature $T_K$, the inverse of the phase coherence time varies linearly with temperature over almost one decade in temperature.
We study the transport properties of a quantum wire, described by the Tomonaga-Luttinger model, in the presence of a backscattering potential provided by several extended time-dependent impurities (barriers). Employing the B\" uttiker-Landauer approach, we first consider the scattering of noninteracting electrons ($g=1$) by a rectangular-like barrier and find an exact solution for the backscattering current, as well as a perturbative solution for a weak static potential with an arbitrary shape. We then include electron-electron interactions and use the Keldysh formalism combined with the boson…
We study a spin S=M/2--Kondo system coupled to electrons in an arbitrary nonequilibrium situation above Kondo temperature. Coupling to hot electrons leads to an increased inverse lifetime of pseudo particles, related to the Korringa width. This in turn is responsible for the increased inelastic relaxation rates of the electronic system. The rates are related to spin--spin correlation functions which are determined using a projection operator formalism. The results generalize recent findings for S=1/2--Kondo impurities which have been used to describe energy relaxation experiments in disordered…
We generalize the bosonization methods for systems in the half line that we discussed elsewhere, to study the effects of interactions on electronic systems coupled to impurities. We introduce a model for a quantum wire coupled with a quantum dot by a purely capacitive interaction. We show that the effect on the quantum wire is a dynamical boundary condition which reflects the charge fluctuations of the quantum dot. Special attention is given to the role of the fermion boundary conditions and their interplay with the electron interactions on the bosonized effective theory.
We study the extrinsic spin Hall effect induced by Ir impurities in Cu by injecting a pure spin current into a CuIr wire from a lateral spin valve structure. While no spin Hall effect is observed without Ir impurity, the spin Hall resistivity of CuIr increases linearly with the impurity concentration. The spin Hall angle of CuIr, $(2.1 \pm 0.6)$% throughout the concentration range between 1% and 12%, is practically independent of temperature. These results represent a clear example of predominant skew scattering extrinsic contribution to the spin Hall effect in a nonmagnetic alloy.
In this paper the scattering rates of electrons in thin free standing GaAs quantum wires in the electric quantum limit are calculated self-consistently taking into account the collisional broadening caused by scattering processes. The following mechanisms of scattering are considered: one-dimensional acoustic and polar optical phonons, surface roughness and ionized impurities. The non-parabolicity of electron energy spectrum is also taken into account.
Motivated by recent experiments on nanowires and carbon nanotubes, we study theoretically the effect of strong, point-like impurities on the linear electrical resistance R of finite length quantum wires. Charge transport is limited by Coulomb blockade and cotunneling. ln R is slowly self-averaging and non Gaussian. Its distribution is Gumbel with finite-size corrections which we compute. At low temperature, the distribution is similar to the variable range hopping (VRH) behaviour found long ago in doped semiconductors. We show that a result by Raikh and Ruzin does not apply. The finite-size co…
We report the experimental observation of quantized conductance by Rashba bands at the surface of 50-nm Bi nanowires. With increasing magnetic fields along the wire axis, the wires exhibit a stepwise increase of conductance with as many as four distinct plateaus together with oscillatory thermopower. The observations can be accounted for by the increase of the number of propagating surface modes. The modes have very high mobility and are associated with Aharonov-Bohm interference around the perimeter consistently with theory of quasiballistic one-dimensional nanowires considering that Lorentz …
Three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) nanowires with quantized surface subband spectra are studied as a main component of Majorana bound states (MBS) devices. However, such wires are known to have large concentration $N \sim 10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$ of Coulomb impurities. It is believed that a MBS device can function only if the amplitude of long-range fluctuations of the random Coulomb potential $Γ$ is smaller than the subband gap $Δ$. Here we calculate $Γ$ for recently experimentally studied large-dielectric-constant (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_{3}$ wires in a small-dielectric-constant enviro…
We have measured in a copper wire the energy exchange rate between quasiparticles as a function of the applied magnetic field. We find that the effective electron-electron interaction is strongly modified by the magnetic field, suggesting that magnetic impurities play a role on the interaction processes.
We analyze the behavior of the four-terminal resistance, relative to the two-terminal resistance of an interacting quantum wire with an impurity, taking into account the invasiveness of the voltage probes. We consider a one-dimensional Luttinger model of spinless fermions for the wire. We treat the coupling to the voltage probes perturbatively, within the framework of non-equilibrium Green function techniques. Our investigation unveils the combined effect of impurities, electron-electron interactions and invasiveness of the probes on the possible occurrence of negative resistance.
We discuss the temperature-dependent thermoelectric transport properties of semiconductor nanostructures comprising a quantum dot coupled to quantum wires: the thermal dependence of the electrical conductance, thermal conductance, and thermopower. We explore the universality of the thermoelectric properties in the temperature range associated with the Kondo crossover. In this thermal range, general arguments indicate that any equilibrium property's temperature dependence should be a universal function of the ratio $T^{*}=T/T_{K}$, where $T_{K}$ is the Kondo temperature. Considering the particl…
We consider a one-dimensional (1D) wire along which single conduction electrons can propagate in the presence of two spin-1/2 magnetic impurities. The electron may be scattered by each impurity via a contact-exchange interaction and thus a spin-flip generally occurs at each scattering event. Adopting a quantum waveguide theory approach, we derive the stationary states of the system at all orders in the electron-impurity exchange coupling constant. This allows us to investigate electron transmission for arbitrary initial states of the two impurity spins. We show that for suitable electron wave …
We examine the effects of long-range interactions in a quantum wire with two impurities. We employ the bosonization technique and derive an effective action for the system. The effect of the long-range interaction on the charging energy and spectral properties of the island formed by the impurities and the linear transport is discussed.
We study the conductance properties of a straight two-dimensional quantum wire with impurities modeled by $s$-like scatterers. Their presence can lead to strong inter-channel coupling. It was shown that such systems depend sensitively on the number of transverse modes included. Based on a poor man's scaling technique we include the effect of higher modes in a renormalized coupling constant. We therefore show that the low-energy behavior of the wire is dominated by only a few modes, which hence is a way to reduce the necessary computing power. The technique is successfully applied to the case o…
We demonstrate using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy the electron quantization within metallic Au atomic wires self-assembled on a Si(111) surface and segmented by adatom impurities. The local electronic states of wire segments with a length up to 10 nm are investigated as terminated by two neighboring Si adatoms. One dimensional (1D) quantum well states are well resolved by their spatial distributions and the inverse-length-square dependence in their energies. The quantization also results in the quantum oscillation of the conductance at the Fermi level. These results deny the …
Electronic transport is theoretically investigated in laterally confined semiconductor superlattices using the formalism of non-equilibrium Green's functions. The transport properties are calculated for nanowire superlattices of varying diameters, from the quantum dot superlattice regime to the quantum well superlattice regime. Scattering processes due to electron-phonon couplings, phonon anharmonicity, charged impurities, surface and interface roughness and alloy disorder are included on a microscopic basis. Elastic scattering mechanisms are treated in a partial coherent way beyond the self-c…
Optically active localized plasmon modes may be very abundant on a rough surface of a metal wire. Zero-point fluctuations of these modes are shown to produce local DC magnetization. Thus, the effect of these modes on the electron dephasing time is similar to the effect of magnetic impurities.
Magnetic fields and magnetic impurities are each known to suppress superconductivity. However, as the field quenches (i.e. polarizes) the impurities, rich consequences, including field-enhanced superconductivity, can emerge when both effects are present. For the case of superconducting wires and thin films, this field-spin interplay is investigated via the Eilenberger-Usadel scheme. Non-monotonic dependence of the critical current on the field (and therefore field-enhanced superconductivity) is found to be possible, even in parameter regimes in which the critical temperature decreases monotoni…
We present series of first-principles calculations for both pure and hydrogen contaminated gold wire systems in order to investigate how such impurities can be detected. We show how a single H atom or a single H2 molecule in an atomic gold wire will affect forces and Au-Au atom distances under elongation. We further determine the corresponding evolution of the low-bias conductance as well as the inelastic contributions from vibrations. Our results indicate that the conductance of gold wires is only slightly reduced from the conductance quantum G0=2e^2/h by the presence of a single hydrogen imp…
We consider a system consisting of single electrons moving along a 1D wire in the presence of two magnetic impurities. Such system shows strong analogies with a Fabry - Perot interferometer in which the impurities play the role of two mirrors with a quantum degree of freedom: the spin. We have analysed the electron transmittivity of the wire in the presence of entanglement between the impurity spins. The main result of our analysis is that, for suitable values of the electron momentum, there are two maximally entangled state of the impurity spins the first of which makes the wire transparent w…
We draw motivation from recent experimental studies and present a comprehensive study of magnetothermoelectric transport in a graphene monolayer within the linear response regime. We employ the modified Kubo formalism developed for thermal transport in a magnetic field. Thermopower as well as thermal conductivity as a function of the gate voltage of a graphene monolayer in the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the graphene plane is determined for low magnetic fields (~1 Tesla) as well as high fields (~8 Tesla). We include the effects of screened charged impurities on thermal transp…
