Classical Ramsey theory has successfully extended to relational structures, yielding a wealth of results that have profoundly influenced other areas of mathematics. Interestingly, the same development has not occurred in the case of dual Ramsey theory. The main goal of this paper is to advance the dual Ramsey theory for finite relational structures with respect to natural structure-preserving maps. Tools from category theory prove instrumental in this endeavor, as was previously the case for finite algebraic systems where the dual Ramsey property had been established for every class of finite algebras coming from an equationally defined class. One cannot help but feel that dual Ramsey phenomena are deeply connected to categorical strategies.
In this paper we provide explicit dual Ramsey statements for several classes of finite relational structures (such as finite linearly ordered graphs, finite linearly ordered metric spaces and finite posets with a linear extension) and conclude the paper with an explicit dual of the Nešetřil-Rödl Theorem for relational structures. Instead of embeddings which are crucial for "direct" Ramsey results, for each class of structures under consideration we propose a special class of surjective maps and prove a dual Ramsey theorem in such a setting. In contrast to on-going Ramsey classification project…
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, define the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. In this paper, we consider two classes of unicyclic graphs, the star with an extra edge and the path with a triangle at one end. We provide the $2$-color Ramsey numbers for these two classes of graphs and use these to obtain general upper and lower bounds on the Gallai-Ramsey numbers.
Almost any reasonable class of finite relational structures has the Ramsey property or a precompact Ramsey expansion. In contrast to that, the list of classes of finite algebras with the precompact Ramsey expansion is surprisingly short. In this paper we show that any nontrivial variety (that is, equationally defined class of algebras) enjoys various \emph{dual} Ramsey properties. We develop a completely new set of strategies that rely on the fact that left adjoints preserve the dual Ramsey property, and then treat classes of algebras as Eilenberg-Moore categories for a monad. We show that fin…
This is Part II of a two-part series regarding Ramsey properties of Fraisse structures satisfying a property called SDAP+, which strengthens the Disjoint Amalgamation Property. In Part I, we prove that every Fraisse structure in a finite relational language with relation symbols of any finite arity satisfying this property is indivisible. In Part II, we prove that every Fraisse structure in a finite relational language with relation symbols of arity at most two having this property has finite big Ramsey degrees which have a simple characterization. It follows that any such Fraisse structure ad…
We build a collection of topological Ramsey spaces of trees giving rise to universal inverse limit structures, extending Zheng's work for the profinite graph to the setting of Fra\"ıssé classes of finite ordered binary relational structures with the Ramsey property. This work is based on the Halpern-Läuchli theorem, but different from the Milliken space of strong subtrees. Based on these topological Ramsey spaces and the work of Huber-Geschke-Kojman on inverse limits of finite ordered graphs, we prove that for each such Fra\"ıssé class, its universal inverse limit structure has finite big Ramse…
We formulate a property strengthening the Disjoint Amalgamation Property and prove that every Fraisse structure in a finite relational language with relation symbols of arity at most two having this property has finite big Ramsey degrees which have a simple characterization. It follows that any such Fraisse structure admits a big Ramsey structure. Furthermore, we prove indivisibility for every Fraisse structure in an arbitrary finite relational language satisfying this property. This work offers a streamlined and unifying approach to Ramsey theory on some seemingly disparate classes of Fraisse…
The Ramsey number $R_X(p,q)$ for a class of graphs $X$ is the minimum $n$ such that every graph in $X$ with at least $n$ vertices has either a clique of size $p$ or an independent set of size $q$. We say that Ramsey numbers are linear in $X$ if there is a constant $k$ such that $R_{X}(p,q) \leq k(p+q)$ for all $p,q$. In the present paper we conjecture that if $X$ is a hereditary class defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs, then Ramsey numbers are linear in $X$ if and only if $X$ excludes a forest, a disjoint union of cliques and their complements. We prove the "only if" part of …
Given a graph $G$, a $k$-sparse $j$-set is a set of $j$ vertices inducing a subgraph with maximum degree at most $k$. A $k$-dense $i$-set is a set of $i$ vertices that is $k$-sparse in the complement of $G$. As a generalization of Ramsey numbers, the $k$-defective Ramsey number $R_k^{\mathcal{G}}(i,j)$ for the graph class $\mathcal{G}$ is defined as the smallest natural number $n$ such that all graphs on $n$ vertices in the class $\mathcal{G}$ have either a $k$-dense $i$-set or a $k$-sparse $j$-set. In this paper, we examine $R_k^{\mathcal{G}}(i,j)$ where $\mathcal{G}$ represents various graph…
Generalizing and simplifying recent work of Dobrinen, we show that if $\mathcal{L}$ is a finite binary relational language and $\mathcal{F}$ is a finite set of finite irreducible $\mathcal{L}$-structures, then the class $\mathcal{K} = \mathrm{Forb}(\mathcal{F})$ has finite big Ramsey degrees.
Using the Carlson-Simpson theorem, we give a new general condition for a structure in a finite binary relational language to have finite big Ramsey degrees
The class of finite distributive lattices, as many other classes of structures, does not have the Ramsey property. It is quite common, though, that after expanding the structures with appropriately chosen linear orders the resulting class has the Ramsey property. So, one might expect that a similar result holds for the class of all finite distributive lattices. Surprisingly, Kechris and Sokić have proved in 2012 that this is not the case: no expansion of the class of finite distributive lattices by linear orders satisfies the Ramsey property. In this paper we prove that the variety of distribu…
In the parlance of relational structures, the Finite Ramsey Theorem states that the class of all finite chains has the Ramsey property. A classical result of J. Nešetřil and V. Rödl claims that the class of all finite posets with a linear extension has the Ramsey property. In 2010 M. Sokić proved that the class of all finite structures consisting of several linear orders has the Ramsey property. This was followed by a 2017 result of S. Solecki and M. Zhao that the class of all finite posets with several linear extensions has the Ramsey property. Using the categorical reinterpretation of the Ra…
Set multipartite Ramsey numbers were introduced in 2004, ge-neralizing the celebrated Ramsey numbers. Let $C_4$ denote the four cycle and let $K_{1,n}$ denote the star on $n+1$ vertices. In this paper we investigate bounds on $C_4-K_{1,n}$ set multipartite Ramsey numbers. Relationships between these numbers and the classical $C_4-K_{1,n}$ Ramsey numbers are explored. Then several near-optimal or exact classes are derived as applications. As the main goal, polarity graphs from projective planes allow us to find suitable subgraphs which yield some optimal classes too.
This article highlights historical achievements in the partition theory of countable homogeneous relational structures, and presents recent work, current trends, and open problems. Exciting recent developments include new methods involving logic, topological Ramsey spaces, and category theory. The paper concentrates on big Ramsey degrees, presenting their essential structure where known and outlining areas for further development. Cognate areas, including infinite dimensional Ramsey theory of homogeneous structures and partition theory of uncountable structures, are also discussed.
We generalize the notion of relational precompact expansions of Fraïssé classes via functorial means, inspired by the technique outlined by Laflamme, Nguyen Van Thé and Sauer in their paper Partition properties of the dense local order and a colored version of Milliken's theorem arXiv:0710.2885. We also generalize the expansion property and prove that categorical precompact expansions grant upper bounds for Ramsey degrees. Moreover, we show under strict conditions, we can also compute big Ramsey degrees. We also apply our methodology to calculate the big and little Ramsey degrees of the object…
We prove the Ramsey property for classes of ordered structures with closures and given local properties. This generalises earlier results: the Nešetřil-Rödl Theorem, the Ramsey property of partial orders and metric spaces as well as the authors' Ramsey lift of bowtie-free graphs. We use this framework to solve several open problems and give new examples of Ramsey classes. Among others, we find Ramsey lifts of convexly ordered $S$-metric spaces and prove the Ramsey theorem for finite models (i.e. structures with both functions and relations) thus providing the ultimate generalisation of the str…
This is Part I of a two-part series regarding Ramsey properties of Fraisse structures satisfying a property called SDAP+, which strengthens the Disjoint Amalgamation Property. We prove that every Fraisse structure in a finite relational language with relation symbols of any finite arity satisfying this property is indivisible. Novelties include a new formulation of coding trees in terms of 1-types over initial segments of the Fraisse structure, and a direct proof of indivisibility which uses the method of forcing to conduct unbounded searches for finite sets. In Part II, we prove that every Fr…
We prove that the universal homogeneous 3-uniform hypergraph has finite big Ramsey degrees. This is the first case where big Ramsey degrees are known to be finite for structures in a non-binary language. Our proof is based on the vector (or product) form of Milliken's Tree Theorem and demonstrates a general method to carry existing results on structures in binary relational languages to higher arities.
We state the Ramsey property of classes of ordered structures with closures and given local properties. This generalises many old and new results: the Nešetřil-Rödl Theorem, the author's Ramsey lift of bowtie-free graphs as well as the Ramsey Theorem for Finite Models (i.e. structures with both functions and relations) thus providing the ultimate generalisation of Structural Ramsey Theorem. We give here a more concise reformulation of recent authors paper "All those Ramsey classes (Ramsey classes with closures and forbidden homomorphisms)" and the main purpose of this paper is to show several …
Building on previous work of the author, for each finite triangle-free graph $\mathbf{G}$, we determine the equivalence relation on the copies of $\mathbf{G}$ inside the universal homogeneous triangle-free graph, $\mathcal{H}_3$, with the smallest number of equivalence classes so that each one of the classes persists in every isomorphic subcopy of $\mathcal{H}_3$. This characterizes the exact big Ramsey degrees of $\mathcal{H}_3$. It follows that the triangle-free Henson graph is a big Ramsey structure.
In contrast to the abundance of "direct" Ramsey results for classes of finite structures (such as finite ordered graphs, finite ordered metric spaces and finite posets with a linear extension), in only a handful of cases we have a meaningful dual Ramsey result. In this paper we prove a dual Ramsey theorem for finite ordered oriented graphs. Instead of embeddings, which are crucial for "direct" Ramsey results, we consider a special class of surjective homomorphisms between finite ordered oriented graphs. Since the setting we are interested in involves both structures and morphisms, all our resu…
We define a collection of topological Ramsey spaces consisting of equivalence relations on $ω$ with the property that the minimal representatives of the equivalence classes alternate according to a fixed partition of $ω$. To prove the associated pigeonhole principles, we make use of the left-variable Hales-Jewett theorem and its extension to an infinite alphabet. We also show how to transfer the corresponding infinite-dimensional Ramsey results to equivalence relations on countable limit ordinals (up to a necessary restriction on the set of minimal representatives of the equivalence classes) i…
We show that every free amalgamation class of finite structures with relations and (symmetric) partial functions is a Ramsey class when enriched by a free linear ordering of vertices. This is a common strengthening of the Nešetřil-Rödl Theorem and the second and third authors' Ramsey theorem for finite models (that is, structures with both relations and functions). We also find subclasses with the ordering property. For languages with relational symbols and unary functions we also show the extension property for partial automorphisms (EPPA) of free amalgamation classes. These general results s…
We construct a Ramsey class whose objects are Steiner systems. In contrast to the situation with general $r$-uniform hypergraphs, it turns out that simply putting linear orders on their sets of vertices is not enough for this purpose: one also has to strengthen the notion of subobjects used from "induced subsystems" to something we call "strongly induced subsystems". Moreover we study the Ramsey properties of other classes of Steiner systems obtained from this class by either forgetting the order or by working with the usual notion of subsystems. This leads to a perhaps surprising induced Rams…
Ramsey theory looks for regularities in large objects. Model theory studies algebraic structures as models of theories. The structural Ramsey theory combines these two fields and is concerned with Ramsey-type questions about certain model-theoretic structures. In 2005, Nešetřil initiated a systematic study of the so-called Ramsey classes of finite structures. This thesis is a contribution to the programme; we find Ramsey expansions of the primitive 3-constrained classes from Cherlin's catalogue of metrically homogeneous graphs. A key ingradient is an explicit combinatorial algorithm to fill-in…
Given a countably infinite hypergraph $\mathcal R$ and a finite hypergraph $\mathcal A$, the big Ramsey degree of $\mathcal A$ in $\mathcal R$ is the least number $L$ such that, for every finite $k$ and every $k$-colouring of the embeddings of $\mathcal A$ to $\mathcal R$, there exists an embedding $f$ from $\mathcal R$ to $\mathcal R$ such that all the embeddings of $\mathcal A$ to the image $f(\mathcal R)$ have at most $L$ different colours. We describe the big Ramsey degrees of the random countably infinite 3-uniform hypergraph, thereby solving a question of Sauer. We also give a new presen…
We investigate Ramsey expansions, the coherent extension property for partial isometries (EPPA), and the existence of a stationary independence relation for all classes of metrically homogeneous graphs from Cherlin's catalogue. We show that, with the exception of tree-like graphs, all metric spaces in the catalogue have precompact Ramsey expansions (or lifts) with the expansion property. With two exceptions we can also characterise the existence of a stationary independence relation and coherent EPPA. Our results are a contribution to Nešetřil's classification programme of Ramsey classes and c…
In this paper we prove a general theorem showing the extension property for partial automorphisms (EPPA, also called the Hrushovski property) for classes of structures containing relations and unary functions, optionally equipped with a permutation group of the language. The proof is elementary, combinatorial and fully self-contained. Our result is a common strengthening of the Herwig-Lascar theorem on EPPA for relational classes with forbidden homomorphisms, the Hodkinson-Otto theorem on EPPA for relational free amalgamation classes, its strengthening for unary functions by Evans, Hubička and…
